The Complexity Within
So, you know that ABC show Once Upon a Time, where the fairy tale world collides with the real world, and heroes and villains perpetually do battle? The show is in its sixth season, but I watch it on Netflix so I just finished out the fifth. I enjoy the series even though it makes me groan sometimes. It’s amazing how the writers keep coming up with fresh story lines. Well, sort of fresh. Actually, the major themes are repeated over and over, but that doesn’t necessarily detract from the show...

Girl Power: My Top Ten Kickass Fictional Females
by Jennifer David Hesse
Well, it certainly is an interesting time to be alive, isn’t it? The next four years in the USA will be nothing if not interesting.
This isn’t a political blog, so I’m not going to comment on the presidential election…except for one thing. I have to acknowledge the incredible significance of our country’s having its first female major party candidate. Say what you will about Hillary Rodham Clinton (actually, don’t say it here. You can say it elsewhere)… but she did ove...

Why I still blog
By Jennifer David Hesse
Remember how last week I wrote that we should all pause to acknowledge our accomplishments before rushing on to the next items on our to-do list? Well, little did I know, I had just missed another one of my own personal milestones. I had my first “blogiversary” a few weeks ago! One year ago, on October 8th, I posted my first entry on this blog… and I haven’t missed a week since.
I’m kind of proud of myself for that. There were weeks when I didn’t feel like blogging and...

A reason to celebrate
By Jennifer David Hesse
First off, this post is not about the Cubs going to the World Series. As exciting as that is! (For Chicagoans, anyway.) No, I'm talking about personal reasons to celebrate. Even small reasons. . . .
I finished writing Book #3 last weekend! Woo hoo! Pop the cork, toss the confetti, drop the mic. Stick a toothpick in me and call me DONE.
Right? Well... not quite. The manuscript is due to my editor next week, so I have a few more days to tweak, edit, tinker, and stew. THE...

Halloween is in the Air!
By Jennifer David Hesse
Last weekend’s weather may have been unseasonably warm, but the weekend itself was perfectly in tune with the Halloween season. We had a gorgeous full moon, beautiful fall colors with their heavenly, earthy dried-leaf smell, and plenty of witch-themed activities.
First, on the topic of witches, there was my book series, of course. In the Wiccan Wheel Mysteries, Keli doesn’t ride on a broom or twitch her nose, but she does cast spells and make magic—the practical, natu...

There’s a chill in the air…time to break out the comfort movies
By Jennifer David Hesse
I don't know about you, but chilly weather makes me want to curl up on the couch with comfort food and a comfort movie. What’s a comfort movie? It’s one you've seen before—probably many times before. It’s a movie that has become more than its plot lines. Comfort movies evoke a feeling of nostalgia. Watching one is like sitting down with an old friend or snuggling up with a loved one, whether human, canine, or feline. It’s familiar. It’s relaxing. Oh, and it might be...

Why I love Facebook… and How I Keep it from Making Me Crazy
ByJennifer David Hesse
My current FB profile pic What an amazing time we live in. I know this is a sign of my age, but every now and then I stop to marvel at the incredible technologies that have cropped up in my lifetime. They are such an integral part of our lives that they’re easy to take for granted, but I remember when they didn’t exist. Cell phones, computers, Google... How did we ever live without them? (LOL)
Another of these amazing tools I’ve been thinking about lately is Facebook.

A Writer’s Life: Deadlines, Juggling Acts, and Keeping it Real
ByJennifer David Hesse
Hot off the presses: Advance Reader Copies of Bell, Book & Candlemas! This week’s peek “Through the Keyhole” will be brief. My next publishing due date is looming in the near future, so all my writing hours need to be laser-focused on meeting my deadline. In fact, I almost decided to skip this week’s blog post. Then I thought better of it. This weekly check-in is a good habit, and one I’d like to keep.
So much of our lives are spent juggling priorities, aren’t they? That...
