Book Spotlight - The Pirate Lord #amreading @Vanda_Vadas

Regency Romance author, Vanda Vadas, is on the blog today to tell us about her latest book.
The Pirate Lord

Can love for his beautiful, aristocratic captive rescue Miles from his lust for revenge?

A family tragedy steeped in deceit and betrayal saw Lady Eloise Blakely vow never to fall victim to a man's charms, let alone invite him into her bed. Until fate swept her aboard a pirate's ship and into its captain's embrace.

Yet when he reveals a dark secret, her lover becomes her enemy...

Ten years ago, Miles Zachary Fenton was framed for murder. For so long he has fought to clear his name and reclaim his dukedom. Now, when both appear to be just within reach, he is forced to abduct a meddling beauty, one who wreaks havoc with his emotions and complicates his plans...
***
Let's take a look inside the book...
Stubborn woman! She’d disobeyed him.
He opened the cabin door and spied her sitting by the galley window. She whipped her head around and shot to her feet at the sight of him. She was mistaken if she thought that drawing the blanket tightly around her would somehow ward off his reprimand.
He shoved the door closed and secured the latch.
She swallowed. ‘Zach, I –’
‘Do you have any idea what your act of defiance might have cost?’
Her gaze fell to her feet. ‘Your life.’
‘And Seth’s!’
She flopped back down on the chair, guilty as charged, with her chin on her chest.
Seething, Zach stepped towards her. ‘And the third life you endangered?’
Her head snapped up. ‘There was another?’
Remorse-filled eyes did nothing to calm the thunder in his veins. ‘It could have been you who’d been swept out to sea! I wouldn’t have known a thing about it. Life and death was at the whim of Mother Nature.’
‘She let me live,’ Eloise muttered.
‘That’s no excuse for you to disobey my order to stay in this cabin!’
In his mind’s eye he saw Eloise tossed overboard and swallowed up by the sea, the only mistress he’d learned to predict. Like a crazed, jealous lover it sucked her under and denied her the breath of life.
Denying him the possibility of a wife and ch–
The unbidden thought left him reeling. Think. Recover.
He spun on his heels and retreated to the opposite side of the cabin lest he speak the delusional sentiment aloud.
She blurted out an earnest-sounding apology. ‘I’m sorry! I heard someone yell man overboard. I had to be sure it wasn’t you because . . . if anything were to happen to you . . .’
Ridiculous to think she genuinely cared for him. ‘You need not fear, Eloise. Should anything befall me, then by chain of command you’ll be safely returned to England. You have my word on this.’
He strode back, his large frame looming over her. ‘I want your word that in future you’ll do exactly as I instruct. You’ll obey orders just as my crew must. You’re my responsibility as much as them.
‘I cannot be your guard or chaperone every minute of the day and night. When I ask you to do something, it’s for a reason and with purpose. You might successfully navigate your way around the mores of society and ballrooms, but do not presume to know or understand the perils and pitfalls of life at sea or aboard my ship. Is that clear?’
Her eyes brimmed with tears, making the green irises all the more brighter. Dark shadows beneath her lower lashes lent a haunting look to her pallid skin. ‘I deserve your censure, but if your life was threatened I would again seek to do everything possible to assist you.’
He seized her shoulders and hauled her to her feet. ‘I forbid it!’
Courage returned in the upward tilt of her chin. ‘Then punish me as you would punish any man who disobeys you.’
Stunned, his hands fell away from her shoulders. ‘Punish you?’
Her eyes softened and she tentatively raised a hand to his cheek. ‘I couldn’t bear to lose –’ Her hand retracted and covered her mouth to stifle a sob. Her lids closed, squeezing the tears from her eyes.
It suddenly hit him. She’d left the cabin in search of him. Not to deliberately flout his authority, but driven by the same fear as his.
The fear of loss.
Good God! He couldn’t possibly mean anything of consequence to her. He tried hard to ignore welling emotion; told himself to walk away, deny the need to take her in his arms and hold her close. He tried to drive from his mind the compulsion to never let her go. Futile!
He couldn’t bear to see her upset. With a curse he took her face in his hands, pressed his lips to her forehead and stroked her still-damp hair. ‘Don’t cry, Eloise.’
She clasped her arms about his waist. The intimate contact proved his undoing. ‘I thought I’d lost you.’ The breath of his hoarse whisper feathered her lips. He inhaled her breath as if it were his own. ‘Don’t ever risk your life for me. Swear it!’
‘No.’ She shook her head, the movement sweeping her mouth over his.
‘You will do as I say.’ He pressed his lips to hers and gave no quarter for her to refuse the command.
She moaned, surrendering her response.

Relaunch Tour - King Arthur's Sister in Washington Court @KimHeadlee

by

Mark Twain as channeled by Kim Iverson Headlee
Official genre of book: Science Fiction - Fantasy crossover

KINDLE COVER BY Natasha Brown

WINNER 2016 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal for Science Fiction & Fantasy.
Morgan le Fay, sixth-century Queen of Gore and the only major character not killed off by Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, vows revenge upon the Yankee Hank Morgan. She casts a spell to take her to 1879 Connecticut so she may waylay Sir Boss before he can travel back in time to destroy her world. But the spell misses by 300 miles and 200 years, landing her in the Washington, D.C., of 2079, replete with flying limousines, hovering office buildings, virtual-reality television, and sundry other technological marvels.
Whatever is a time-displaced queen of magic and minions to do? Why, rebuild her kingdom, of course—two kingdoms, in fact: as Campaign Boss for the reelection of American President Malory Beckham Hinton, and as owner of the London Knights world-champion baseball franchise.
Written as though by the old master himself, King Arthur’s Sister in Washington’s Court by Mark Twain as channeled by Kim Iverson Headlee offers laughs, love, and a candid look at American society, popular culture, politics, baseball... and the human heart.

The wench’s smile looked indulgent, if a bit saddened. “Queen Morgan, may I offer an observation?”

“Pray, proceed, Darla, as I seem to have paid for it.”

“This is about a man—the dishy one you’re always coming in here with.”

“Brilliant. Yes, the dishy one. Dishy, and treacherous.” I took a long pull of bitters.

“Lor’ love ye, madame; but all men are treacherous! If you’re lucky, that’s all he is.”

I reflected, through another draught, upon this spot of rough wisdom. Of all the men I had ever known, biblically or not, in this century or any other, the only man I could not label as “treacherous” was Sir Galahad, and we all know what happened to him. For the couple of you who might not be privy to the story: in brief, Sir Galahad drank from the Holy Grail and fell down dead, reportedly because his soul was so pure that Our Lord God bustled him straightaway to heaven. The fact that Sir Galahad had always acted so damned self-righteous that his Grail-hunting companions had wearied of his holier-than-thou ways probably had nothing whatever to do with his demise. I said:

“I have treachery aplenty in my life, Darla.” Free agents, not-free agents, other players, managers, coaches…the list seemed endless. “I do not need more from Sandy Carter.”

“But you do need his love.”

I shook my head. “With love like that…”

She was not listening, but had looked toward the line of tall windows fronting the street, across which arched the words “nnI dleiftuO” and, in a revolving pattern of white, blue, and red tube-lights, “NEPO.” I would have taken umbrage at the offense—the server’s, not the fact that the words in the windows appeared backward to my vantage—but I had imbibed too much beer to care.

Darla said, “You need his love…and he needs yours. Look.”

A most unusual interview - Mary Anne Yarde @Its_CCHogan

 Just a quick post today.

I was kindly invited to appear on author, C.C. Hogan's, blog.  But, there was a catch.  You see, C.C Hogan does things a little bit differently on his blog and he gives a whole new meaning to what an author interview is!

This was the mandate he set before me.

"Stripped Bare is an occasional column where authors and other creatives are given the chance to expose themselves to the world in unusual and creative ways."

It had to be creative. So, after staring vacantly at a wall for over an hour, I suddenly had a light bulb moment.

I would transport myself into the pages of The Du Lac Chronicles and have an audience with Alden du Lac - the hero of my story.

Click on the link below and check out this very, tongue-in-cheek, short-story!

Gavin’s gaze was drawn back to the castle’s battle-scarred walls and the heavily armed guards. The evil emanating from the structure surrounded and held him captive, like a lone deer surrounded by hungry wolves in the dead of winter, unable to move, its eyes glassy with fear, its limbs frozen by the hypnotic gleam of the wolves’ yellow eyes. Even knowing its life was ending, the deer wouldn’t break and run. So Gavin sat frozen in front of the castle.
The enormity of his quest enveloped Gavin and he sighed. Continuing on meant he might save the Wild Man, but he might put himself in danger as well. King Edward was his father’s enemy and possibly responsible for Aldred’s murder. If Gavin were caught, Edward wouldn’t treat him kindly. The young prince summoned his courage and focused on the Wild Man. It had seemed so simple last night in the company of Bryan and Philip.
Philip
“I’ll be lucky if I ever get to the top. I need another lightning strike,” he muttered. He pushed himself upward. It took several more minutes and more backward progress before his wish for lightning was fulfilled. With the few seconds of illumination it provided, Philip spied a trail to the left leading to the top. He made his way over and was rewarded with firmer footing provided by the rocks imbedded in the dirt. He made it to the top in half the time it had taken him to get to the trail.
At the peak, the relentless wind nearly toppled him. But Philip had too much at stake to be defeated. He hauled himself into the full brunt of the storm. Out to sea, the whitecaps rose and fell like his chest. His breathing, like the waves, was choppy and erratic. Philip stepped back from the cliff’s edge and looked around. A blast of white light flashed across the sky, revealing a small cave to the right. There was no sign of Dunham. For a moment, Philip gave into panic. Maybe the murderer had already been here, contacted the ship, and gone.
Bryan
He rode hard, not sparing his horse. It was in his hands now. His failure would mean the Wild Man would die along with his dream of becoming a knight. After crossing the Western Cleddan River twice and using the main roads, he avoided the mayhem left by the storm, and rode into the quiet village of Fishguard early that evening. The fishermen were likely already asleep. They would be up before dawn and the work of hauling in loaded nets was grueling. Only the tavern where he stopped to purchase cheese and bread showed any activity. On his way to Strumble Head, he ate and washed it down with the water he had packed.
He reached the Head at around eleven o’clock as the night was at its darkest. Only a sliver of moonlight forced its way through the clouds. It provided minimal light, but it was enough. He tied the grey in a stand of scrub well away from the trail, grabbed his sword, and walked to the point of the Head. The beach was deserted. His gaze swept the sea. Nothing.

Threaten To Undo Us by Rose Seiler Scott has a new cover! I reviewed this book, not so long ago and I have to admit, it blew me away. Fantastic read. So when Rose said the cover was having a make-over I just had to share it with you.  If you would like to read my review of Threaten To Undo Us, you can do so...here!

Let's take a look at the new cover.

“Allied forces are advancing. You are no longer under the protection of the German army. All German citizens of the Third Reich are to evacuate.”
At these words, Liesel and her young children are forced to flee their home. But losing the only home she has ever known is only the beginning. The brutal advance of Stalin’s forces into Poland results in a regime of terror and uncertainty, threatening to destroy Liesel’s family at every turn. Interrogated and imprisoned in a labour camp, her dream to re-unite with her husband and children seems impossible. Her only hope?  A dangerous gamble, buoyed by a sliver of faith.
Based on a true story, Threaten to Undo Usexposes shocking history in the shadow of World War Two.

Tintagel Castle and Arthurian Legend

"...it is right by the sea, and surrounded by the sea on all sides; and there is no other way into it, except that provided by a narrow rocky passage—and there, three armed warriors could forbid all entry, even if you took up your stand with the whole of Britain behind you..." Geoffrey of Monmouth

This is quite an achievement. I have spent the last 6 months blogging about Arthur and his Knights, but I have failed to mention Tintagel Castle. Why? I hear you ask...Truefully, I just haven't got around to it until now. I know, poor excuse, but hey, I am on it!Tintagle Castle is located on the peninsula of Tintagel Island in Cornwall. It is a medieval fortification, built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall in the 13th Century. The castle became a tourist attraction in the 19th Century when archeologist started to excavate the site. In the 1930's a team of archeologists discovered a much earlier high status building. But what does this have to do with King Arthur and his Knights?
Well...a certain Welshman wrote a certain book, you may have heard of it...It goes by the name, The History of the Kings of Britain. Yes, that's right, I am talking about Monmouth yet again!!Can you remember the story about Uther Pendragon falling madly in love with the Duke of Cornwall's wife? No?  Okay, quick recap...***King Uther Pendragon holds court, and there he meets Igrain, the wife of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall. Uther is driven almost out of his mind with lust for Igrain. He cannot help but make his attraction known. But Igrain loves her husband and tells him of Uther's pursuit. Gorlois whisks his wife away from court and they head back home to the safety of Tintagle Castle.

So great is Uther's lust that he follows her home, and while Gorlois is out fighting in a noble battle, Uther asks the great sorcerer, Merlin, to disguise him as Gorlois. Thinking Uther is Gorlois, Igrain makes love to him. That very night, Gorlois dies.***
So, if we believe Monmouth's versions of events ( and there is not reason not to...he did, after all, have that ancient manuscript that he conveniently lost ) Arthur was conceived at Tintagel. Monmouth never suggested that Arthur was born at Tintagel, neither did he mention Arthur ever visiting the place..but you know what it's like when poets get hold of a story! As the years passed, Tintagel became embroidered into the delicate tapestry which is Arthurian Legend.

But still, there are those who want proof - something that they can see, that they can touch. If Arthur was at Tintagle then surly there would be evidence?

Ralegh Radford (1900 -1999) an English archaeologist whose interest was in Dark Age Britain, had this to say about Tintagle and Arthurian legend in 1935.
"...no concrete evidence whatsoever has yet been found to support the legendary connection of the  (Tintagel) Castle with King Arthur..."
Charles Thomas - a well respected historian and archeologist stated;
"...there simply is no independently attested connection in early Cornish folklore locating Arthur, at any age or in any capacity, at Tintagel..."
But how does this explain the Artognou stone?
"patern coli avi ficit artognou""Artognou, father of a descendant of Coll, has had this constucted"
The stone's discovery in 1998, met with much media excitement. Had evidence of Arthur been found at last? Did the name Artognou really translate as Arthur? The stone is of the right age and, if Monmouth is to believed, then Arthur was conceived at Tintagle - at last, here is the proof.
Of course there were plenty of people to discredit such a notion - including many historians. I guess, like with everything else when it comes to Arthur and his knights, it depends on what you believe. And thats why Arthur and his world drew me in in the first place...the endless possibilities.
