Author’s Inspiration ~ Stephanie Churchill #historicalfantasy @WriterChurchill

Please give a warm welcome to Historical Fantasy author, Stephanie Churchill. Stephanie is going to share with us her inspirations behind her fabulous new book…

The King’s Daughter

In this gripping sequel to The Scribe's Daughter, a young woman finds herself unwittingly caught up in a maelstrom of power, intrigue, and shifting perceptions, where the line between ally and enemy is subtle, and the fragile facade of reality is easily broken.
Irisa's parents are dead and her younger sister Kassia is away on a journey when the sisters’ mysterious customer returns, urging Irisa to leave with him before disaster strikes. Can she trust him to keep her safe? How much does he know about the fate of her father? Only a voyage across the Eastmor Ocean to the land of her ancestors will reveal the truth about her family’s disturbing past. Once there, Irisa steps into a future she has unknowingly been prepared for since childhood, but what she discovers is far more sinister than she could have ever imagined. Will she have the courage to claim her inheritance for her own?
Author's Inspiration
“Every story can be broken down into three parts: the beginning, the middle, and the twist.” R.L. Stine
Remember the movie The Sixth Sense, the 1999 ghost story?  In this chilling psychological thriller, eight-year-old Cole Sear is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. He is terrified and confused, too young to understand and too terrified to tell anyone about his torment, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the ominous truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the uncovered consequence is a jolt that awakens them both, including pretty much every movie-goer.
Like most people, I was dumbstruck by the ending. The solution to many of the film's conundrums had been in plain view the whole time, but the very boldness of the storytelling whisked viewers past all the crucial hints, right through to the end of the film, where everything came to a stomach lurching conclusion that no one saw coming.  Well played, M. Night Shyamalan.
Another film that stands out to me for similar reasons is Memento, the 2000 film starring Guy Pearce.  Pearce plays a man who, as a result of a past trauma, suffers from an inability to form new memories resulting in short-term memory loss that resets about every five minutes.  Throughout the film he searches for the people who attacked him and killed his wife by using a system of Polaroid photographs, notes, and tattoos to keep track of information he can’t remember. The movie progresses along two different sequences of scenes throughout the film: one in black-and-white, shown chronologically, and one in color, shown in reverse order. The two narratives connect at the end of the film to produce one complete and cohesive story.  And just like The Sixth Sense, Memento ends with a jaw-dropping conclusion.
While each of these stories is a film rather than a book, they share a type of storytelling that attracts me over and over: twists which mercilessly take advantage of viewers’ assumptions by choosing a sudden and unexpected route rather than meander along a well-established and predictable line.  What you think you know is supposed turn left, but it actually turns right, shaking the very foundations of what is supposed to be.
When I sat down to write my first book, The Scribe’s Daughter, I wanted to echo this type of plot device in literary form.  Even if I couldn’t pull off something as dramatic as either of those movies, I still wanted to find ways to lull readers into a series of safe places through the narrative, easing them into the basic belief that matters would end predictably, that everything would wrap up nicely like a good Walt Disney fairy tale - familiar and comfortable.  So it was with mischievous glee that I dropped in a few plot twists, adding enough red herrings to magnify the twists.  Safe assumptions were turned on their heads, disrupted in a way only safe things can be disrupted.  It was only at the conclusion of the book that readers could finally rest, satisfied in the knowledge that matters finally did settle, coalescing into known, comfortable truths.
Or could they?
Not wanting anyone to become too relaxed, it was time to write the next book, The King’s Daughter.  Tenting my fingers in my best impersonation of a mad scientist, I decided it was time stir the pot again.  If readers thought matters were settled at the end of the last book, why not flip the known things on their heads one more time?
Inspired by storytellers who expertly smash through expectations of what is supposed to be, The Scribe’s Daughter and The King’s Daughter explore the heart of perspective by telling the individual stories of two sisters, each of whom fights to find herself amidst the turmoil of her family’s past.  Set against the backdrop of dirty city streets, mountain vistas, and glistening palaces, each sister discovers a reality of truth that will by turns revolutionize then taint her opinion of the past, thrusting her into a future far more complex and more sinister than either could ever have imagined.  Facing the shifting realities and fragile facade of these new truths will require an inner strength that neither one recognized in herself before.
While readers may not get whip lash from similarly-sized gravitational plot shifts that exist in The Sixth Sense, my hope in the telling of these stories is that readers will find surprises aplenty, cultivating feelings of unpredictability as they journey along with Kassia and Irisa on their adventurous tale of discovery.

About the author
Stephanie Churchill grew up in the American Midwest, and after school moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a paralegal, moving to the Minneapolis metro area when she married.  She says, 'One day while on my lunch break from work, I visited a nearby bookstore and happened upon a book by author Sharon Kay Penman.  I’d never heard of her before, but the book looked interesting, so I bought it.  Immediately I become a rabid fan of her work. I discovered that Ms. Penman had fan club and that she happened to interact there frequently.  As a result of a casual comment she made about how writers generally don’t get detailed feedback from readers, I wrote her an embarrassingly long review of her latest book, Lionheart.  As a result of that review, she asked me what would become the most life-changing question: “Have you ever thought about writing?”  And The Scribe’s Daughter was born.'

The Land of King Arthur ~ St Nectan's Kieve #Arthurian #legend #Cornwall.

Is there anything more beautiful than a waterfall?
Waterfall in St Nectan's Glen, Trethevy, Cornwall ~ Wikipedia
St Nectan Kieve and St Nectan
The Holy Martyr Nectan ~ Wikipedia
It is said that Saint Nectan built a hermitage above this waterfall in the 6th century. Legend has it that he would ring a silver bell during storms and high seas to warn passing ships to watch out for the rocks at the mouth of the Rockey Valley.
St Nectan's Glen, Trethevy, Cornwall ~ Wikipedia
Unfortunately, there is no evidence that Saint Nectan ever had a hermitage here, but it is a good story. Sadly, Saint Nectan lost his head when he confronted the two robbers who had stolen his cows. The story goes that after the robbers had separated Saint Nectan from his head, Nectan got up, picked up his head walked back to his well where he promptly collapsed and died. One robber lost his mind when he witnessed this, the other buried Nectan, from then on in, miracles occurred at the sight of Nectan's grave.
St Nectan's Kieve and King Arthur
The Trevillet River in Saint Nectan's Glen ~ Wikipeidia

Another story tells of how the bravest and the most noblest knights of King Arthur once came to this spot. With heads bowed at the foot of the waterfall, they prayed to God before they set off on the ultimate quest to search for the Holy Grail.
Is there any truth in the story of Arthur's knights?

I very much doubt it, but St Nectan's Kieve is certainly beautiful enough to lend itself to such legends.

#bookreview ~ Remedy (The Forgotten Legacies Series Book 3) #fantasy @SimmillKj

Remedy(The Forgotten Legacies Series Book 3)
By K.J.Simmill

Before there were legends there was war.
Before fables came twisted truth and distorted tales.
Things deemed too dangerous were sealed, and bound for all eternity.
Or so it was believed.

Whispers from an ancient realm threaten the peace, drawing a lone adventurer into The Depths of Acheron.
He seeks something from within this sealed domain, and those banished want something in return.
Something belonging to them.

There was a prophecy forged of rebirth and death.
But knowing what is to come can change what will be.
And there is one who seeks to do just that.
He intends to use every tool at his disposal, every distraction and manipulation, to ensure the future will be his.

The time has come for the forgotten to be unveiled, and for the sealed to be unbound. Only then will the world know true fear.

What did I think of the book?

What if everything you thought you knew, everything you had been led to believe, was a lie?
Taya has suffered from terrible hallucinations all her life. Abandoned as a baby, if it was not for the care and diligence of Sunniva, then she did not dare think where she would be. Sunniva had warned that one day Taya's illness, her madness, would consume her, but what if the madness wasn't madness at all. What if her illness was caused by the woman who had so-called sworn to protect her?
Oh. My. Days! Buckle up and get ready for one hell of a ride. Remedy (The Forgotten Legacies Series Book 3) by K.J. Simmill is one of the most compelling and page-turning mythological fantasies that I have ever read.
There is a huge cast of characters in this book, they all have back stories, and no one is as they seem — what on earth was going on with Bray? I wasn’t expecting that! I loved the portrayal of Taya, and I really felt for her. Several times, in fact, I was actually in tears because of what she had to endure. Rob, was also one of my favourite characters although sometimes I just wanted to shake him. He could be so self-centred and driven to achieve his own desire that sometimes he came across as very callous, but underneath it all, he does have a very caring heart.
K.J.Simmill certainly has a way with words and her vivid descriptions really made this world come to life. Her word building was very elegant and a real joy to read. Remedy (The Forgotten Legacies Series Book 3) does work very well as a standalone but I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you started with book 3. If you are looking for epic fantasy, then look no further than The Forgotten Legacies Series.
I Highly Recommend.

Author’s Inspiration ~ Tracy Miller #Historical #Romance @tracyamiller1

Please give a warm Coffee Pot welcome to Historical Romance author, Tracy Miller. Tracy is going to share with us her inspirations behind her fabulous book… Loveweaver

The year is 895. Slayde's job as an top military leader of Kent is to rid England of the last of the Viking raiders. But Llyrica is no ordinary Viking. She's a beauty with a mysterious past ... and a talent for weaving song spells. Even as Slayde saves her from drowning, he knows Llyrica will be a dangerous distraction.
Llyrica is now a stranger in a strange land on a mission to fulfill a deathbed promise. But she must also find her missing brother. This man, Slayde, known as The StoneHeart in his country, seems determined to block her at every turn. And yet she can't help but be drawn to the affectionate, loving side of him that awakens when he sleeps - The sleepwalker.
Unknown to both Llyrica and Slayde, each will use the other to accomplish their quests. Both will also fall under the song spell that she wove into the braid of his tunic.
Will her Lovespell ensure a happily ever after for them? Or condemn them to a love that was never meant to be?

Author’s Inspiration
As a former dressmaker and current crafter/DIYer, I have always been fascinated by the art of weaving. So when, during my Viking research, I discovered tablet weaving, I knew it would somehow make its way into a book.
Soon after, I learned that Viking women sang blessings and prayers as they worked at their looms. Viola! My character Llyrica was conceived. She would be highly skilled at tablet weaving, and sing blessings into her decorative braids. She would even weave a lovespell. She would come to be know as the Loveweaver.
Among the details I learned about tablet weaving was that a partial loom was found among the artifacts at a burial site in Norway on the Viking ship, the Oseberg. It dates to around 850 AD. Tablet weaving likely dates back to ancient Egypt.

With the purchase of book on tablet weaving, also known as “card weaving” I soon understood the basics enough to build my own loom, and create my own “tablets” or “cards.”

The most time consuming part of any type of weaving is the cutting of the warp yarns and the warping (threading) of the loom. With tablet weaving, the yarns must pass through the holes in the cards in right color combinations, and direction.
The design you see on my loom is the same that Llyrica wove for Slayde’s tunic. I chose this pattern because it goes quickly, especially for an experienced weaver.

With tablet weaving, as long as you have the tablets and yarn, you can basically set it up and do it anywhere. Llyrica did this many times.
You’ll see a lot of irregularities in the close up of my finished braid. Llyrica’s braid is perfect.

To see tablet weaving in action, watch this YouTube video:

Learning tablet weaving connected me creatively to Llyrica, and it helped me understand what could and could not be achieved as a weaver. They say write what you know, or know what you write, and for me knowing how to weave added something special to my non-writing life.
I so enjoy a heroine in historical romance who has an awesome skill that she uses as a kind of power in the world. It might be healing, rune-reading, baking, archery, singing, dancing or you-name-it. This “power” will also influence the hero in a way that is almost magic. But is it magic? Maybe it’s the magic of love.

The Land fo King Arthur ~ King Arthur's Bed #Arthurian #myths #Cornwall

"...A grave for March, a grave for Gwythur,A grave for Gwgawn of the ruddy Sword,No wise the thought a grave for Arthur..."
Le Morte D'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory

Nestles along a ridge of rocky outcrops on the beautiful Bodmin Moor lies King Arthur's bed.
King Arthur's Bed

It is said that this bed was hollowed out especially for Arthur, although whether it was his bed or his coffin is up for debate.

Cornwall has a long association with Arthurian legends, so it seems only fitting that Arthur had a tomb made there. Arthur's Bed is very close to Trewortha Tor and Hawk's Tor, both of which are worth checking out if you ever find yourself in the area!

Reviewed By Ray Simmons for Readers' Favorite
I like what Arthur and his knights represent for western civilization. The Du Lac Princess by Mary Anne Yarde is a unique perspective. This novel is book three in a series called The Du Lac Chronicles. Based on Arthurian legend, it is categorized as epic fantasy, but I feel this version of post-Arthurian Britain is more historically based than most, even though this period in history is notoriously difficult to find facts about. All in all, I enjoyed it tremendously. The emphasis on the family of Lancelot is fascinating, and the ties to Celtic mythology were greatly appreciated. The emphasis on the dual nature of the Church was done very well and added depth to the overall feeling of historical legitimacy. A story rich in depth and emotion, I recommend The Du Lac Princess to anyone interested in British history and Arthurian legend.

I enjoyed the portrayal of Amandine Du Lac. She is a strong woman in a very precarious situation. But no matter what the Church or others want her to believe, she knows what is true in her heart. The other characters are equally driven and complex. Some of them, like Sampson, are taken out of the pages of history, or like Mordred, from the annals of legend. The plot is good, based on house and family politics. The writing is great, aided by a lot of interesting, complicated, and colorful characters. I look forward to going back and reading the two previous books in this series. I think Mary Anne Yarde loves history and Arthurian legend as much as I do.

#BookReview ~ Love’s Sunrise: An American Historical Romance #HistFic #Romance @WileyDorothy

Love’s Sunrise: An American Historical Romance (Wilderness Hearts Historical Romances Book 2)
By Dorothy Wiley

Gabe McGrath has secured the title to his land among the blue-green pastures and rolling hills of 1806 frontier Kentucky. During a violent storm—the second worst night of his life—Gabe seeks shelter at the home of a nearby cattleman and meets the man’s stunning, strong-willed daughter, Martha Wyllie.

Burdens of grief and a desire for justice stand in the way of Gabe’s happiness. And Martha holds a sacred, secret promise deep in her heart that makes her deny her attraction to the handsome neighbor. While Gabe heroically confronts both the haunting tragedies of the past and the ruthless and wide-ranging violence of a brutal gang, Martha must make a heartrending choice between keeping her word and following her heart.

LOVE’S SUNRISE is a riveting historical romance teeming with action and brimming with emotional realism. Dorothy Wiley, an Amazon bestselling and award-winning author, has artfully written a memorable story that will touch your heart.

What did I think of the book?

Gabe McGrath has had more than his share of grief in his life, but he has finally secured the title to his land. If only he could see the men who murdered his parents brought to justice then maybe he would, at last, find peace.
Martha Wyllie made a promise to her dying mother many years ago, and she is determined to never go back on her word. Even if it means sacrificing her own happiness.
When Martha meets Gabe, she realizes that this is a man whom she could spend the rest of her life with, but if she declared her love, then she would break her promise and that she would not do.
Rich with historical detail, realistic characters and a memorable plot, Love's Sunrise: An American Historical Romance by Dorothy Wiley is a sit-down and finish book.
Ms. Wiley had brought 19th Century Kentucky back to life with her descriptive language and beautiful prose. I simply could not put this story down.
I adored the characterisation of both Gabe and Martha, they were very real in the telling, and they were very believable characters, each with their own set of problems but drawn together because of love.
If you are looking for a good historical romance, full of detail and filled with page-turning action then Love's Sunrise: An American Historical Romance is the book for you.
I Highly Recommend.
