Who’s on my pinterest? Ileana Hunter Art, that’s who!

Ileana Hunter ArtThis is done by Ileana Hunter, a self-taught graphite artist. Her style mesmerizes me. You’ll be seeing a lot of her here on the blog, as I love to look at her work. Can you guess the actress?

Regular readers of this blog or those of you who have ploughed your way through all 120,000 words of Self-Printed will know that I'm a big fan of The Book Designer and the man behind it, Joel Friedlander (@JFBookman on Twitter). It's a fantastic resource for self-publishers and it always makes for interesting reading too. Joel also runs monthly e-book design awards, which offer a sometimes wonderful, sometimes...

Fabulous info here on book formatting. I'm going to be giving this a go for Milo!

Inside the Novel #2

project miloIn Quest for Milo, the main characters travel all over the countryside of their native home, looking for key ingredients to a potion. One of the ingredients is a flower that only blooms during the full moon. There are plenty of plants and trees that do bloom at night. The one that I used as a reference to create my own was the selenicereus grandiflorus or sometimes referred to as Queen of the Night. It’s a cactus-like plant that only blooms once a year and withers within hours. I made my moonflower very stubborn about when it blooms: only during the full moon, which means mine blooms more frequently, but it worked out well as Toad and Melena are on a deadline and can’t wait for the next moon cycle.

Guest Writer and Photographer Eydie Aarhus

Hi Bob. Hi Bill by Eydie AarhusThank you, Eydie Aarhus for being my guest! Eydie hasn’t published … yet, but judging from her humorous blog posts, she’s got potential. She’s also a fabulous photographer. This is one of my favorites. I highly recommend you check out her blog.

1) What’s your name? Where can we find you? Blog? Twitter? Facebook?

Eydie Aarhus.

http://eaarhus.wordpress.com/

https://twitter.com/EydieAarhus

https://www.facebook.com/eydie.aarhus

2) Where do you live?

San Antonio, Texas

3) How long have you been writing? How many books have you written? They can be published or not published.

Off and on for years.  1 book, in the works, and not sure I have faith in it to publish. I do hope to write a book on my photography.

I love to Blog.  I am not sure I fit into these questions and your purpose here, but the baby is napping and I am ignoring my kitchen and the mountain of laundry.

4) What genre do you like writing the most? What challenges do you face in this genre?

Tragic love stories.  but more blog writing now.

5) Tell me a little about your current WIP.

Sorry, but what is an WIP? Again, I’m more photography based.

Melissa interjecting: Sorry, Eydie. WIP is short for “Work in Progress”. It usually relates to the story/art/etc that is absorbing most of your attention and focus.

6) How do you typically begin your project? Do you create outlines and character profiles or jump in head first with the initial idea?

Jump in, then rewrite, then erase, then jump back in, then I’m moving right along.

7) What aspect of your writing do you consider your strength? Your weakness?

Love to blog, tell my stories.  Use any form of comedy. My weakness is grammar.  Sometimes you would think I never attended school.

8) Do you focus on one project or do you work on multiple manuscripts at once?

Still on 1 book, been a few years in the making.  Plus blogging.

9) Probably the editing process is our most challenging. How do you go about editing your work? Do you have any tips you’d like to share?

I have my husband go over things sometimes.  Sometimes I just go with it.

10) Now choose just one of your books and add a link to it.

The only thing I have out there with my writing is my blog.  Link is above.

Thank you again, Eydie!

Mally Biddle — Framed

I loved my latest cover of The Unicorn Girl by Ileana Hunter so much that I immediately asked how she felt about doing another. Lucky for me, she said ‘yes’.

But Ileana isn’t the only individual that deserves credit. When I began the search for the perfect reference photo that embodied my Mally, I admit, I was a little worried. It took time, longer than it took to find my Leah, but find her I did! This is the reference photo that Ileana used to create Mally. It was done by Sergiu Cioban and is titled, ‘Freckles II’.

Here’s the original piece from Ileana that is now the cover for my second novel, The Tale of Mally Biddle.

Top Five Nemesis Words

snidely-whiplash-evil-genius

While writing last night on Quest for Milo, I once again stumbled into the grasp of my number one Nemesis Word. Perhaps I should explain what a Nemesis Word is. A Nemesis Word is a word that you always, no matter how many times you write it down, misspell. (Note: this definition and creation of ‘nemesis word’ is entirely fictional, simply created for the amusement of myself…)

Anyway, I asked my mates on FB what their Nemesis Word was and it was so much fun to bat them around and I realized that I don’t have just one Nemesis Word as many of theirs give me trouble, too. So I figured why not a top ten (or in this case, top five) list to showcase the foes that lay in wait in the corners of my keyboard.

1. Immediately. It never fails. Even when I think really, really hard of how to spell it, I misspell it.

2. Parallel. I misspell this one SO badly that spell check is utterly bamboozled.

3. Nemesis. Oddly enough.

4. Restaurant. It’s a good thing I don’t have to write ‘restaurant’ very often in my medieval-ish time period. Good ol’ pubs and inns.

5. Medieval. Yep. It snagged me pretty good at number 4.

There are more, but why showcase my lack of spelling skill? What are your Nemesis Words? Or are you one of those Word Conquerors who never misspells anything? I envy you, my friend. I envy you.
