Come One, Come All! Books on Parade Sign Up
Promoting our work is a very difficult task, indeed. It’s quite hard to know whether a promotion helped, which is why we authors become very tight with our wallets — we’ve all been stung. And I really want to help. And I’m doing it for free. I have just as much foresight (as in none) as you do when it comes to knowing whether this little promotion will reach future readers, but it’s something. And, I think, that’s worth it.
To try to help, I’ve created Books on Parade, a feature for showcasing books in all their glory. I post here, twitter, facebook and pinterest. If you’re an author and would like your current book, past book, or future book featured, just pop on over to Books on Parade for the details and send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you!

News: One Drunk Manuscript
Good afternoon!
~The Unicorn Girl was featured on fellow fantasy author Tara Maya’s blog a few weeks ago. Thank you, thank you, Tara! If you missed it, you can find it here. Tara’s book Initiate was also featured on Books on Parade.
~Congratulations to Belinda Mellor, Lisa Cox, and The Literary Panda. They each got an e-copy of The Unicorn Girl. I periodically do giveaways on my facebook page, so if you want to get in the loop, just like the page.
~The Orphan and the Thief is still in Revise Mode, but I am very, very close to the end. I’ve got just a few more chapters to revise before I pass the newest draft back to the editor. The final few chapters are the ones that need massive rewriting (the current ending is shamefully disappointing), so they will take a bit longer to finish. And since we’re talking about writing, I found this great article today from The New York Times that I think my writer friends (and those who live with them) will appreciate: Don’t Ask What I’m Writing.
(Here’s a photo of the manuscript of Orphan and Thief after it had a run in with a bottle of wine. Luckily I had already put in the corrections.)
~I’ve begun playing around with covers for Orphan and Thief. So far I’ve got four different versions, but I think I’m going to try out a few more.
~Don’t forget, you can get a taste of The Orphan and the Thief through pictures on Pinterest.
~Other than Pinterest, you can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and Shelfari. You can also sign up for an email alert through Amazon when The Orphan and the Thief is finally published.
Cheers!
Melissa

Books on Parade ~ The Grimm Report by Eric Wilder
Featuring books that have caught my eye — welcome to Books On Parade! If you are an author and would like your novel featured in Books On Parade, click here to find out how.
Today’s Books on Parade is a little different, but I think you’ll enjoy it just as much. Eric Wilder from The Grimm Report has stopped by to share one of his reports on the happenings of Ever After. His blog is a riot of good old-fashioned fun. So without further ado, The Grimm Report!
News based on Folklore and Fairytales
Celebrating the absurd with mock-tabloid satire, GrimmReport.com marries the reality of everyday life with popular elements from fairytales, folklore, and nursery rhymes. Rejoice with the Beast as Belle grants him permission to convert the den into a man-cave. Learn why the third little pig grows weary of his live-in brothers. Follow the courtroom drama of Rumpelstiltskin’s indictment in the Straw-To-Gold Scandal. GrimmReport.com covers all of these stories and more.
Excerpt
NEVERLAND–A recent study of census data has revealed that there is a large population of former teen idols living among the Lost Boys of Neverland. Many of those residing in the community were formally employed as either boy-band member, child actor, or product posterchild. They have all followed the second star to the right with the same happy thought, to never have to endure the fate of growing pains.
Cultural nostalgia permeates the fabric of the Lost Boy community. A who’s who of Tiger Beat cover alumni move about their day to a synchronized step. All culinary concoctions are personally taste tested by a boy named Mikey, before they are served to the general populous. The dialect is comprised of old slang and out of date catch phrases. “What you talkin’ ’bout, Hook?” has even replaced the old battle cry of a rooster crow.
“Whether working in show-business, or battling the pirates of Neverland, there’s one thing that concerns us all. Getting the hook!” said long-time lad, and rumored founding member of Menudo, Peter Pan. “Neverland is a place that keeps us all young, and our appeal fresh. Since I never completed high school, I’m not sure how it works. It could be something in the water we drink, the air we breathe, or the pixie dust we ingest. I guess you could say Neverland’s got the right stuff.”

Spotlight on the Review #4

Emily’s full review:
I like a book with some combination of unicorns, horses, and a heroine with powers that set her apart. The Unicorn Girl has all three–it’s page-turning fantasy with the works, only better. What makes this book so different and so very, very good is the haunting story of how the heroine grows irreversibly into her powers. Leah’s illness and her transformation through it into a strange, adult beauty change everything, even her place in her own family. Deeply intelligent, moving–and I couldn’t put it down.
The Unicorn Girl is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
