First of all, I love this cover.
I had been keeping an eye out, since beginning work on this novel, for covers that I thought might match it content-wise.
At first, I searched high and wide for pictures of awesome looking spaceships and art of two female warriors kicking the crap out of each other. Having toyed with those ideas I had a shortlist of about 10 images that I thought were pretty good.
Unfortunately, to each of them, I had the same reaction - “This is aight.”
I like to use my instincts for most things. It stops me from over analyzing decisions and helps me make snappier choices. And most of the time it works out. I recently turned down a very good job offer from a great looking company because when my wife asked me about it, I said “Something wasn’t quite right. I don’t know what. But … something.” She said I sounded unsure, so I shouldn’t take it. That I should trust my instincts. I did. And a month later, I got an even better offer from a great company that I’m delighted to have joined.
So when I saw the current cover art pop up on thebookcoverdesigner.com I hit the purchase button immediately. It wasn’t what I had been looking for in my previous searches and didn’t necessarily tick all the boxes I thought needed to be ticked. But after one long look at it, something jumped out at me and said - THIS IS IT BRO. HIT THAT S**T.
The rest fell into place. My aesthetically talented and reliable wife took care of the lettering and the fonts. And a few hours later. BOOM. The cover was born.
The PULSE lettering is the one you’ll read about being on the uniforms of PULSE soldiers as the series grows.
The planet below - Is it Earth? Is it Raxis? Is it something else? I like that there are questions marks.
And my name - Well I’ve always wanted to have my name written in a futuristic looking font. Mission Complete.
Thanks to my wife Nana - for being awesome with powerpoint and other tools I have no idea how to use. As well as vetoing terrible font choices.
To thebookcoverdesigner.com for providing a huge library of choices for people who want something unique but can’t necessarily accommodate bespoke commissions (Ballin on a budget).
And to Adrijus from http://www.rockingbookcovers.com/ the artist responsible for this particular piece of work.
Thanks for reading!

Hey Ry, what’s your book about bro?
“You wrote a book? You?”

That’s the first question I’ve been repeatedly asked faced by a sceptical frown.
After making a joke about their mother/spouse/favourite pet in retaliation, the next question is usually:
“So what’s it about?”
Here’s my own spoiler free answer
All the men are gone. One day, every male except one… No wait, that’s Y The Last Man. My bad. Let’s talk about PULSE.
All the men are gone. Why? Because the women decided they didn’t need them anymore. Obvs.
How did they get rid of them? They had help. You see women everywhere in the galaxy have decided the same thing. A world without men? How about a whole galaxy. That’s PULSE’s goal. Freedom for women everywhere.
That’s the background of course. This particular story picks up a hundred years or so after Earth has joined the party. Two girls, Faye and Stella, start their own journey to become soldiers and help PULSE expand its reach to more and more planets.
But you see PULSE only needs the best. Women who can endure impossible alien climates, defeat physically superior species and travel to the far reaches of the universe.
And so The Trial was born. A test so brutal only the very best make it out the other side.
And still, I haven’t arrived at what this book is truly about. It’s not about women. It’s not about men. It’s not even about aliens. It’s a tale of friendship. What it means to us. How it effects our decisions. Why it rules our lives.
What would you do to protect a friend? Would you fight for them? Would you die?
More importantly, would you live for them?
Also there are lasers, spaceships, jetpacks and giant worms.
Right. That’s enough. Read it to find out more.
Enjoy!
