Top 10 Pieces of Advice for New Authors

It’s been almost a year since I published my first book. In that time, I’ve published three more and helped several other indie authors get their first books out. I don’t think that qualifies me for expert status yet. It does, however, provide me with some unique insight.I look back all the time and think about all the writing advice I was given when I first started out. It was hard to sort through it and decide what was worth listening to. In the end, I wound up tossing most of it. No one ca...

Our Time is Precious

Writing is very hard, time consuming work. It’s not as hard as rocket science, but it takes a lot of brain power. Once you get warmed up and the words finally start to flow, it feels like that’s when everything around you falls apart. The phone rings. You get that important e-mail you’ve been waiting on. Twenty people on Facebook decide to send you private messages and that cute guy from down the hall is finally knocking on your door in nothing but a towel because he locked himself out and ne...

Author Spotlight: Kayla Hoyet

Today's Author Spotlight is on Kayla Hoyet, another dystopan author and writer of The Spheres Cycle.Q) Hi there and thanks for joining me today! First off, tell us about yourself. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?A) Thank you for inviting me!I think I'm a little boring when I'm not writing, to be honest. Today's Friday Feature is a romance novel by author Mary Crawford titled Tough.Savannah Lyons has her secrets. She buried them in the past long ago, and she’d like to leave them there. She never talks about her past with anyone—especially wickedly handsome restaurant owners like the guy next door.Casey Moore has met women with moves and instincts like hers before but not since h...

The Power of Support

In July of 2015, I quit my job to write full time. I hadn’t published any books, nor had I gotten any kind of advance or windfall inheritance that allowed me to do so. In fact, we were arguably the most broke we’d ever been. We lived in a dump of a rental with two pots, a pan, a washer and dryer, a couple of camping chairs and two air mattresses. Aside from the clothes we’d managed to salvage from a recent bedbug infestation (thanks to slum lord landlords, such was our situation), that was al...
