A few of you have asked me about the preorder campaign for THE QUEEN’S RESISTANCE and I wanted to say that yes, I have one planned! ✨ I’ve had it in the works for a few months now, and I spent some time on it this morning, and I think y’all are really going to love what I have planned for you. I’ll be unveiling the campaign next week! ✨ Another thing that I’m very excited about is the virtual signing of TQR2! If you want to purchase a signed and/or personalized copy of THE QUEEN’S RESISTANCE, you can do that now through the amazing @gcreading ! ✨ You can also purchase a signed edition of THE QUEEN’S RISING through them, too, if you’d like to get the set. All preorders made through GoodChoice Reading will be included in my preorder campaign. ✨ So if you’d love a signed edition (and it doesn’t matter where in the world you are) then you should definitely check out @gcreading

Hi! I'm obsessed with TQR, and like many Anon.'s here it has inspired me to start writing my own book! I was wondering, what program do you use to write your books (i.e. Scrivener or Word)? I can't wait for TQR2. Thank you <3

Ahh, thank you so much! That just made my day. I love to hear that my book has inspired others to write!

I use Word. But I have heard of more and more authors using and loving Scrivener, so I’m starting to think that maybe I should check it out…

Hi! I’ve always wondered if authors write their first books with a sequel in mind- for example, when you’re writing the first book, do you plant seeds in it for a sequel, or do you plan your sequel after the first book is already written? Thanks!

I think it could happen both ways. It depends on if the author is a big planner, or if they discover the story as they go.

I write very organically. For that reason, it’s harder for me to plan a sequel when I’m in the middle of writing the first book. I might have a few ideas that bloom while I’m drafting that I want to keep in mind for a follow up. But typically, I draft a book. And then I rewrite a great deal of it in edits. It takes me several rounds of revisions to truly unlock the heart of what I want my book to be, so it’s harder for me to plan a sequel in the process.

BUT…this is all to say I might definitely try to plan out a book and its sequel before hand. It’s always comforting to have a plan together. But then sometimes imagination really just tosses all those plans out the window. ;)

How did you learn to write so well?

Practice. Lots and lots of practice. I wrote A LOT when I was a teenager. And all of those hours were not wasted, even if my stories never went anywhere. Those hours were sharpening me, teaching me how to write and how to find my own voice.

Also, by reading. Reading has deepened my knowledge about how to shape a story, how to craft character arcs, how to write a good first chapter, etc.

Did you always envision yourself as becoming a writer?

Yes. It was always my dream. I wrote my first book in crayons, before I truly knew how to spell.

Who is your favorite author, and what is your favorite book?

ooooh. This is always a hard question to answer because I have SO MANY.

But here are a few authors who have really influenced and delighted me, and the names of their book(s) that I simply love:

Juliet Marillier–Daughter of the Forest; The Shadowfell Trilogy

Melina Marchetta–Jellicoe Road; The Lumatere Chronicles

Alison Croggon–The Books of Pellinor

Holly Black–The Cruel Prince

Have you seen The Vampire Diaries and The Originals? If not, I think you might like them! And maybe they’d be good writing inspiration!

I have not seen them, but I’ve always wanted to! They look amazing. I’ll have to try them out now. Thank you for the rec! :)

For your fans/readers who don’t have Instagram to view your stories, would you consider re-posting the questions on here or your blog? Thanks! :)

Hi! Ah, I really wish I could. But I have a lot of answers on my IG stories and it would take me a long time to transcribe all of them them here. But I will do my best to keep answering questions about craft and books etc here on Tumblr. And I will do better at answering them in a timely manner! :)
