Monday, Moaning & a Movie (GOT)

Game of Thrones

The sun is out, the birds are singing, and the temperature is in the spring category for Texas. I don’t have much to moan about on this glorious Monday morning. My dog threw up last night, but even she is smiling this morning. Don’t let my Marvelous Monday morning keep you from sending me your Monday woes. We’re all in this together and I’m happy to shoulder your venting if your Monday isn’t as fabulous as mine.

As for the movie. OK, this isn’t a movie, but it is Game of Thrones, so I thought I’d put in my two cents about the first episode in the last season of the epic saga of the battles over the Seven Kingdoms.

Alert minor spoilers ahead!

I thought the writers did a good job of setting up what is yet to come. I was rooting for the big ginger Wildling, Tormund, to live through the fall of the wall (because ya know we gingers got to stick together), and sure enough he survived.  I hope he gets a go with the tall, blond, drink of water he desires but it’s yet to be seen if she shares his affections. Lord (of Light) knows there’s not much time left for the two of them to have a romantic dinner.

I was happy to see Littlefinger get what was coming to him last season, but I miss his constant (figurative) moustache twirling.

My list of hopeful deaths includes: Cersei Lannister (of course), the Mountain (Isn’t he dead already?) Bron, (I know he’s the “court jester”, but if he kills Tyrion he’s moved to the top of my list). Euron Greyjoy, the Night King, Qyburn (the annoying hand of Queen Cersei), and maybe Lord Varys (the fat monk has caused enough trouble, but he did help Tyrion, so he’s on the fence).

I’m counting on the romance of John Snow and Daenerys Targaryen to have a HEA on the Iron throne, but that would be too tidy for the GOT fans. I’ll cross my fingers and hope there was a romance reader in the writer’s room.

Scroll down to the bottom and post any comments or woes. My lovely assistant Alex will have to approve them before they go live. Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you!

Have a Happy Monday y’all!

Monday, Moaning & a Movie (Captain Marvel)

Aaaaaah, Mondays. Let’s get on with the moaning.

I purposely schedule my patients in the afternoon on Mondays, not only because I’m not a morning person, but because the weekends tend to be filled to the brim with errands, events, fun, and sometimes laziness. I need Monday morning to dig my writing hat out from under the pile of dirty laundry and get my head back in the game.

For my gripe today I give a furrowed brow to people who accept a job and don’t bother to show up after they were “thrilled” to be offered the position. Go figure…

  Now on with the show

Following Wonder Woman’s lead, Marvel brings on their strong female superhero with Captain Marvel. I wasn’t overly impressed with the casting choice of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel based on the trailers I watched, however after seeing the entire film, she was, in fact, the best choice.

Now y’all know I love a strong, snarky female lead and Captain Marvel is no exception. She fulfills my demand for a solid female protagonist while winning me over with her down to earth demeanor and quick wit. Marvel did an exceptional job of layering in the flashbacks instead of info dumping or dream sequencing these from the get-go. I love the fact this movie was set in 1995, and the music reflected the era.

Here’s the lowdown with a few light spoilers.

Captain Marvel invites us to learn the origin story of Carol Danvers. At first, we meet her as a Kree warrior only known as Vers. She is learning the ropes from her sexy but demanding commander played by Jude Law. Vers is suffering from a case of amnesia and doesn’t remember a thing about her life before arriving on the capital planet Hala.  When a StarForce mission goes awry, Vers is captured by the Skulls led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). They use their technology to replay the memory of Vers, and we learn through a most effective flashback a few insights as to what happened to Carol Danvers.

Filled with action, humor, and lots of visual stimulation the story continues to follow Carol as she becomes Marvel’s most powerful hero when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

We meet a young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), as he helps Vers track down Carol’s best friend Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), who offers Carol further insight into who she was before the accident that found her on Hala. Learning about her past changes what Carol thinks she knows about the war between the Kree and the Skrulls.

Be prepared for supposedly good guys to turn bad and vice-versa. I loved the Stan Lee cameo and the fact the movie had a great message.  My favorite surprise was Goose. An orange tabby cat with a really big secret.

I would grab a tub of popcorn and catch this one on the big screen. It’s worth the moolah.

Monday, Moaning & a Movie-The Favourite

Mondays, Moaning & a Movie.

Lordy, I’ve been a lazy blogger. My only excuse is I’ve been holed up in the eighteenth century with Jennifer Cloud’s great aint Elma Jean. Since wrapping up my work in progress (WIP), I’ve returned to the twenty-first century only to take you back to the eighteenth century with my review of the movie, The Favourite.

Before I dish out my thoughts on the academy award nominated movie, I’ve decided to start each Monday by pushing out the negative thoughts. That’s right, I’m moaning! Getting it all out of my system. This way I can go on about my week feeling a little lighter.

Let’s get started with the moaning.

For today’s moan: I’m officially off the couch, tell me what you want!!

Why can’t my family ask me to get them what they need when I get up?  In fact, I often ask them, can I get you anything while I’m up? Or, Hey, I’m in the pantry, anyone needs a bag of chips, cookies, dog treats? I mean you get the picture, right?

And don’t wait until I’ve dug to the bowels of my purse, fished out the gum, retrieved a piece for myself, and then returned the pack to the bottomless Mary Poppin’s bag, to ask for a piece!

Sooo much better! Please feel free to moan in the comments and get it out of your system. It clears the mind to plan for the week ahead.

The Favourite

A few spoilers here:

As for moaning, Queen Ann had a lot to moan about in The Favourite. I know it was up for a multitude of awards, and I purposely try to avoid these because I’m more Star Wars than Jane Austin, but I caught myself laughing a few times.

The movie takes place in the early 1700s.  Queen Anne’s (Olivia Colman) rein is ending. She suffers horribly from gout, and if someone had told her to quit eating meat and lose weight, she might have ruled another twenty years. But alas, my time travelers weren’t there to lend a hand. Instead, Queen Anne suffers with illness and depression symbolized by 17 rabbits that sadly fill an emotional void for each of her failed pregnancies.

Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), the Queen’s confidant and lover, often persuades the Queen in the political direction most favorable to Churchill’s husband the Duke of Marlborough (Mark Gatiss). Churchill’s role to entertain the outrageously bewigged and painted aristocrats with duck racing and apple dodge ball while keeping the Queen completely satisfied becomes challenged when her penniless cousin, Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, but when the politics of war against the French become time-consuming for Sarah, Abigail sees a chance to take Sarah’s place, not only as the Queen’s companion but a climb up the aristocratic ladder as well.

I found the satirical scheming by both women humorous at times, and their witty dialogue kept me involved in the movie. Who doesn’t love a good power struggle for the Queen’s attention?

The supposedly frail Queen sticks it to them in the end, and I had to give her a standing O for that, which is what she ended up with as well. (Hehe).

Where am I?

Come to see me in Denver!  I’ll be signing books at the Literacy Autographing.
“Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing

Literacy Autographing

At the “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing, hundreds of romance authors meet with and sign books for fans in this two-hour event, with the proceeds from book sales going to literacy organizations.

In 2017, Romance Writers of America raised more than $45,000 to benefit ProLiteracy and the Florida Literacy Coalition. Since 1990, RWA has raised over $1 million for literacy organizations!

According to ProLiteracy, the amount donated from the “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing over the years has helped 40,000 adults learn to read, and in 2017, ProLiteracy recognized this accomplishment by honoring RWA with their President’s Award. Thanks to all who have helped the organization contribute to this worthy cause.

“RWA’s donations to ProLiteracy have helped break the cycle of poverty, elevate workforce skills, and improve the quality of life for adults worldwide,” says Kevin Morgan, president and CEO of ProLiteracy. “ProLiteracy is thankful to the authors, readers, publishers, and literacy partners who have supported us and helped RWA to improve so many lives through literacy.”
