More from Sandra

In A Spring at The Greenbrier, Book 7 in Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts Series, Marilla, our heroine, is as desperate as her mother to find healing for her younger sister’s polio. When the doctor recommends daily bathing in the sulphur springs, her family cannot afford the cost. Marilla transfers to the bath wing at The Greenbrier where her new boss allows her to bring her sister at the end of each day after the guests have finished their bathing sessions. It makes for a long day yet the sacrifice is worth her exhaustion if the springs can help her ten-year-old sister.

The Greenbrier, a beautiful and elegant resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, first received its fame from healthy benefits of drinking the sulphur springs and bathing in its waters.

Both the hero and heroine in A Spring at The Greenbrier have younger sisters who can benefit from heated spring baths.

The bulk of my research for this story was for the springs and what illnesses benefit from them. I had to discover the illnesses for which doctors recommended the baths historically.

Soothing soaks in hot springs are recommended even today. They can boost blood circulation, reduce pain, improve skin conditions, reduce stress, decrease inflammation in joints, and detoxify the body.

Most resort guests in the early days drank tumblers of the water before each meal. A resort doctor in the 1800s cautioned taking a maximum of 12 glasses daily. Health benefits for the bowels, liver, kidneys, and skin most often appeared between three to six weeks. The resort began to sell it in bottles at drug stores. It was labelled as A Natural Laxative.

Major renovations were done by new owners for a grand reopening in September of 1913. Marilla, our heroine, begins working at the Women’s Department of the new bath wing. Female guests enjoyed heated sulphur spring baths in bathing rooms. Doctors sent their wealthy patients to the springs with a recommended regimen of bathing that might also include drinking the spring water. The temperature of the water, the frequency, and the length of the baths were set by their doctor.

Folks suffering from a variety of ailments sought benefits from the spring waters, including gout, rheumatism, arthritis, neuritis, dyspepsia, jaundice, scurvy, hay fever, malaria, bronchitis, asthma, and chronic diseases of the skin, stomach, bowels, and liver.

Mineral waters can harm people with aneurisms in the heart and large arteries, cancer, tubercular consumption, and some brain complaints.

The springs were of great benefit for folks suffering from chronic complaints. These benefits happened so gradually that patients started to feel better “without being able to account for it.”

So there were a lot of conditions to choose from for my two ailing girls in my story.

A Spring at The Greenbrier is a nostalgic story set in 1914. I invite you to read the whole series!

MY REVIEW

The story is a sweet romance with a historically enriched background that made me feel like I was there. The descriptions of the various towns and countryside, plus Marilla's devotion and care for her crippled sister kept me engaged in the story. All the main characters were well-developed and I felt a connection right away. They had struggles that challenged them daily.

I was inspired by Marilla's crippled sister, Katie. Despite her being crippled, she never gave up. Neither did Marilla or her mother. They had hope, love, and faith.

The ending wrapped things up nicely, even with a welcomed surprise that you won't see coming. I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley, and voluntarily chose to review it.

My Review

The story takes place in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Perry Quinn is a rancher and a widower, who isn't ready to move on from his past. Rebecca Elliot, a widow with a young son, travels to live with her brother in Prescott. The main characters captured my attention from the beginning. Especially, Rebecca's son, Josiah.

The story is a journey of great loss, heartache, and finally, joy in second chances and new beginnings. The descriptions of the freighting business were interesting but also showed the dangers of the job. The story has a sweet ending and wraps everything up nicely.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. A positive review is not required, and all opinions are my own.

Review of New Release- Paradise on the Pike by Sarah Angleton

For fans of Water for Elephants and Devil in the White City, a mystery set in the enchanting world of Hagenbeck's Zoological Paradise on the grounds of the 1904 World's Fair.

1903

Twenty-year-old Max Eyer is still reeling from his father’s recent death when a mysterious stranger’s offer to buy the family farm outside of Hamburg, Germany presents to him and his mother an unexpected opportunity to make a fresh start in America.

Welcomed by his uncle’s bustling family in St. Louis Max finds employment on the grounds of the upcoming 1904 World’s Fair, where he is hired as a zookeeper at Hagenbeck’s Animal Paradise on the Pike. Max’s enchantment with the trained animal shows, ostrich rides, and water sliding elephants is rivaled only by his fascination with Shehani, a beautiful Sinhalese woman who captivates the crowds of fairgoers by dancing among the lions.

However Max’s paradise unravels when a grisly discovery leads to an accusation of murder against the woman he loves. His efforts to uncover the truth may save her, but in this fantasy land of the fair where palaces are temporary, animals roam free, and people are on exhibit, will his own dreams be shattered by an ugly reality?

My Review
Max and his mother leave Germany after selling their potato farm. Their past haunts them so they leave for America to live with family in St. Louis, Missouri. In America his mother fits right in, but not so for Max. The storyline mixes history and fiction during the 1904 World's Fair.

Max works for the Animal Paradise at the Fair. The story is interesting and Max's character is complicated. Lots of suspense, and mystery, which kept me guessing. The description of the Animal Paradise and the Fair made me feel like I was there. There were intense moments but then some humorous ones.

I received an ARC from the author and voluntarily chose to review it.

Review of Power Moves: Ignite Your Confidence and Become a Force by Sarah Jakes Roberts

Unleash the superpower of being yourself. Sarah Jakes Roberts, bestselling author of Woman Evolve, will help you craft a language toward your issues with intentionality.

Stripping our minds of the expectations that inundate our world has never been more difficult. One quick scroll of our phones and we're consumed by other people's projections of how we should be feeling or responding.

The ability to determine your truth without judgment is the beginning of harnessing authentic power in Christ. When we do the work of embracing where we are, we create space for God's love to meet us in our most raw form and then polish us to shine like never before. Power does not lie in success, achievement, or performance. Power rests in humility, honesty, and the commitment to continuous growth.

Power Moves will help you to qualify whether you're living life authentically or if you've found a way to maintain status quo. It will reveal the principles required to tap into the most powerful version of who you are, then lead you in how to introduce your authentic self to the world around you. Sarah will help you

give language to your changing needs, acknowledge and applaud your growth, refuse to bear the weight all at once or all alone, andrelease your power.

Open your eyes to the way that God sees you and awaken your boldness to effect change in the world by living out the truth of who God says you are with confidence.

Power Moves is not a typical self-help guide. It’s a transformative journey toward authenticity, courage, and unapologetic self-expression. Sarah Jakes Roberts, bestselling author of “Woman Evolve,” has crafted a powerful narrative that invites readers to strip away societal expectations, embrace vulnerability, and step into their true power.

My Review

Power Moves is a very in-depth read concerning how to control the power God placed inside of you.

It contains examples from Sarah's life and the things she learned. There are insights from scripture to solidify your journey. Her application at the end of each chapter has marinate, active, and prayer sections.

This book when applied, could allow God to work a positive change in your life.

About the Author

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She is the Christy Award-winning author of historical romances: A Tale of Two Hearts, The Captured Bride, The Innkeeper’s Daughter, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor, The Captive Heart, Brentwood’s Ward, A Heart Deceived, and Gallimore, but also leaped the historical fence into the realm of contemporary with the zany romantic mystery Out of the Frying Pan.

More from Michelle

Oh Inspiration…Wherefore Art Thou?

There are several questions I am asked frequently as an author.

“Hey, how much money do you make?”

“Can you help me get my book published?”

“How come it takes you so long to finish a story?”

But probably the most common query is this: what sorts of things inspire you? Now that is a question I can go on and on about! Don’t panic, though. I’ll be brief.

Story ideas come from every place imaginable. I’ve had plot thoughts from watching kids’ movies or even from eavesdropping at a coffee shop (note: beware what you say in public). TV series are also a favorite of mine, so much so that my latest release, The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane, is loosely based on one of my all-time favorite PBS series.

Have you seen this show? If not, do yourself a favor and ride that pony. If you have, then you know what I’m talking about. Either way, you should know that, the main character, is a detective in Victorian London—a very sassy yet classy lady. And that’s what struck me light a lightning bolt.

This woman is Kit, the heroine in my Blackfriars series, like right there on the big screen.

So, for book III, I decided I’d let ol’ Kit open her own private investigation agency with the help of her father, a recently retired police sergeant. Of course much intrigue and chaos ensues, just like in my all-time favorite PBS series, bringing the Blackfriars series to a satisfying end.

Inspiration honestly comes from anywhere, so next time you’re rubbing elbows with an author, beware. You just might end up as a character in their next book.

My Review

The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane is a fast-paced story of Kit and Jackson's attempt to take down a smuggler. The chase becomes messy as dead bodies add up. Kit now a mother, finds continuing in her investigative duties more difficult.

Descriptions of underground London and characters kept me turning the pages. The story is full of emotion, danger, and various desirable and undesirable characters that keep you guessing. Will hope, love, and justice endure to the end? You'll have to read it to find out. A great conclusion to a well-written series.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

MY REVIEW

Yukon Wilderness Evidence is non-stop action from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. The suspense kept me engaged and at times guessing what would happen next. A twist occurred when I thought I knew, leaving me without a clue.

Keeley was strong, career-driven, and a protective mother. Her son, MJ was adorable. Keeley and Brett are carrying baggage from their past, trying to find their way back to God. I loved the spiritual content of the story, the well-developed characters with lots of layers, and the setting of Carimoose Bay & Yukon Elemac Forest is amazingly well described. I felt like I was there. The ending was surprising and wrapped everything up nicely.

It's another amazing read. Highly recommended. I received an ARC from the publisher and willingly chose to review it. All opinions are my own.

Review of Streams of Courage by Sandra Merville Hart

About the Book

Book: Streams of Courage

Author: Sandra Merville Hart

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: March 26, 2024

In a world turned upside down by war and betrayal…will his role as a spy bring them closer…or tear their future apart?

The war that Julia Dodd prayed to avoid is now reality, and with it, her world has been turned on its head. Her fellow citizens, who stood with her in their support of the union, have crossed firmly to the side of the south. And her mother, lost in her grief over the loss of her husband and children, can think of nothing but protecting Julia’s brother’s inheritance. She insists that her daughter seek a wealthier husband than Ashburn Mitchell.

Ash knows what his fellow citizens think of him when he refuses to fight for the Confederacy. Shouldering the accusation of being a coward and refusing to hide behind his limp, Ash remains in Vicksburg to support his family as a saddler while his two best friends join the fight. Struggling to increase his business so he can marry the woman he loves, Ash becomes a spy in support of the Union. He can’t fight for the South but won’t raise a musket against them.

As tragedy instigates Ash to risk greater danger to speed the end of the war, Julia can only pray it won’t cost them everything. She’s already lost her father and two siblings. Must she lose the man she loves too?

About the Author

Sandra Merville Hart, award-winning and Amazon bestselling author of inspirational historical romances, loves to discover little-known yet fascinating facts from American history to include in her stories. Her desire is to transport her readers back in time. She is also a blogger, speaker, and conference teacher.

More from Sandra

In Streams of Courage, Book 4 in my Spies of the Civil War Series, Julia, our heroine, has suffered several significant losses in her life, including her father and two siblings. Her mother’s insistence that Julia stop courting Ash, a saddler, and find instead a rich suitor makes no sense. Surely her father had provided for her.

Then she discovers that her parents have only provided for her younger brother, whom her mother had always adored. Julia will be penniless when her mother dies. The knowledge crushes her.

Ash is already supporting his mother and siblings. As Mama points out, adding a wife and children will stretch his income to the limits. Mama will not give her blessing should Ash propose. Julia, who had been raised in comfort, must find some means of support.

As I considered how Julia could make money in a war-time economy, it was clear her mother, as the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, would never condone her working in a shop. What can she do?

Tatting lace.

Her lace patterns have received compliments in the past. With fewer ships bringing goods into the city, lace is in short supply. Granted, the demand for lace has diminished because even dress fabric isn’t as available as before the war.

I enjoyed researching this skill that was once so prevalent among young ladies in society. I watched videos on making lace with a special needle called a tatting needle.

The most basic stitch is the double-stitch. There is a special way to hold the needle and thread so that the first stitch grabs thread from under the thumb and the second stitch grabs it from over the thumb. There is a rhythm to the stitching in the hands of a skilled lacemaker.

I watched videos that demonstrated making rings with picot trim. There is a variety of stitching. The variations create beautiful patterns. The lace is then rolled for storage.

Fascinating. It’s mesmerizing to watch the different patterns emerge.

Tatting is a small yet interesting aspect in the adventurous story. Ash has become a Union spy. For her and her family’s safety, he keeps his dangerous activities a secret from Julia.

Part of my research for this novel and the next two novels included a trip to Vicksburg, Mississippi. I toured the museums and walked the streets of the historic city. Though I wasn’t certain of my story at the time of my visit, I was inspired by the history.

Avenue of Betrayal, Book 1, is set in the Union capital of Washington City (Washington DC) in 1861, where a surprising number of Confederate sympathizers and spies lived. Boulevard of Confusion and Byway to Danger are set in Richmond, the Confederate capital in 1862. Actual historical spies touch the lives of our fictional family.

Through both real and fictional characters, this series highlights activities spies were involved in and some of the motives behind their decisions.

I invite you to read the whole “Spies of the Civil War” series!

MY REVIEW

The historical details in the story are well-researched giving the story its authenticity and creating a sense of being there. Part of the story is heartbreaking while other parts show courage and inspiration. The character of Ash is one such person.

I loved the budding romance between Ash and Julia. Julia is steadfast in her faith and love of family as well as Ash. The story shows the hardship the people of Vicksburg endured, but also their ability to overcome. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and willingly chose to review it. All opinions are my own

Review of The Vanished by Cara Putman

The Vanished JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for The Vanished by Cara Putman hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book The Vanished Title: The Vanished Series: Secrets to Keep #1 Author: Cara Putman Publisher: Kregel Publications Release Date: April 16, 2024 Genre: Christian Mystery & Suspense

Janae Simmons left the small town of Kedgewick, Virginia, ten years ago to pursue her legal career and never looked back--until a professional mistake leads her to her grandmother's historic carriage house and to the town where her past threatens to find her. The quiet streets echo with her grandfather's sterling reputation, one that conflicts with fresh questions that claw at Janae, launching her on a reluctant journey to unearth his secrets. When her new job at a local law firm doesn't live up to expectations, she wonders if coming home was the right decision.

Carter Montgomery starts his art preservation career with the only job he can get--director at the Elliott Museum of Art. At least Kedgewick is a nice enough town to provide him and his nephew with a safe place to grieve the loss of Carter's sister. But Carter's calm days disappear when an elderly woman claims two paintings in the museum's collection were stolen from her family during World War II.
Carter enlists Janae's help to unravel the legal labyrinth of art ownership, and the peaceful facade of Kedgewick morphs into a hot bed of secrets. When an attorney turns up dead and Janae uncovers another painting, what began as a simple legal issue spirals into a race against time. As the web of intrigue tightens, the duo must confront a looming question: What dark truths lie beneath the surface, waiting to be exposed?
"Putman's legal expertise shines in this compelling and intricately plotted romantic suspense. Highly recommended!"--Colleen Coble, USA Today best-selling author
"Cara Putman has once again created an exciting cast of characters. I was immediately drawn in by Janae and Carter's unique chemistry. This is one story you don't want to miss."--Rebecca Hemlock, award-winning author of Fury in the Shadows

MY REVIEW

I was drawn into the story from the beginning. The main characters of Janae & Carter are well-developed with lots of layers. Each character has their own set of challenges, but along the way, they find themselves together fighting for change. I found myself drawn to them from the beginning.

It's a tale of stolen and lost art from WWII combined with deceit, danger, and lots of twists that I didn't see coming. The historical details interwoven with the legal aspects were well-interspersed throughout the story. A budding romance completes the story with everything you would want. It is highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.

New Release- A Love Restored by Dora Hiers

At fifty years old, a person should already know what they wanted to do with their life, right? Trouble was, Brock Lewiston knew. It just wasn't what his father expected of him after grooming Brock from birth to take over the helm of Lewiston Vacation Rentals. Now that Brock's son has assumed responsibility for the family business, Brock can finally focus on building his own company, designing and creating metal pieces of art. He just wished he'd told his father how he really felt years ago. Maybe then he'd still be married to the love of his life…

The toughest decision Macy Grove ever made was to leave her husband. Oh, how she loved that man! But her ex put his job over his dreams and their own little family. Living with the constant demands of a company that catered to wealthy vacationers, they never had an opportunity to take a vacation of their own! She couldn't stand by and watch him self-destruct. Besides, she wanted a husband who shared her faith and loved her unconditionally. A partner who chased his dreams, and who was happy doing it. Not…unfulfilled and bitter because he was too busy doing for everyone else and allowing them to control their lives.

When their son's wedding draws Macy back to Butterfly Bend, will she see the difference in her ex-husband? With Brock finally living out his purpose and his faith, can their love be restored, or will Macy leave him a second time?

My Review

A Love Restored is a wonderful, heartwarming story about second chances. I loved Brock's spiritual growth and the relationship of Brock & Macy, even after ten years. Brock has become a strong and honorable man since his dedication to Christ.

The theme of the story was even more centered on God and redemption. My heart was moved by the love, reconciliation, and what happens when people put God first in their lives which came through the storyline well. I feel this is the best book in the series and brought forth lots of emotions as I followed along on their journey.  Highly recommended.

I was given a complimentary ARC and a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
