An high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

The Strange Magic of Fiction

My upcoming book just went through several rounds of editing and this last one was based on comments from Beta Readers. I’m not going to lie; it was stressful. As I read through the manuscript with all its margin comments it became quickly obvious that readers all take in different meanings from the same words, the same ideas.

The biggest one was the ending. It was split straight up the middle. Half loved it and couldn’t have wished for a better ending, the other half was disappointed and wanted something different.

13244492625_7a42ca4be5_k

I was very surprised by some of the comments. The peppering of made-up language (mostly specific to an item of clothing or a common expression such as thank you or sorry) apparently confused some of the readers. Here I was, thinking that the meaning was obvious in context but for some the words threw them off the story. As a reader, those words would have pulled me in instead because it gives the world of the story flavor and uniqueness. Then again, I’m a linguist and I am forever fascinated with language.

Another surprising comment was during a love scene. It was my MC’s first time and for reasons I won’t go into right now (no spoilers) I wanted this moment to be magical. Not perfect, just magical in terms of emotional pleasure. A reader thought I should add something about pain, considering it was this girl’s first time. Other betas thought I should keep it the way it was.

6170777424_9894e09cc2_z

Don’t get me wrong. Their comments were very helpful and I did change a few things that hopefully bettered the flow and the content of the story. But it fascinated me how different we all are when we read. Same story, so many different opinions.

That is the magic of fiction, I think. The fact that not two people take away the same from the same book. Every book club session I attend is an exercise in reconciling often totally different feelings about the same event or the same character. One particular book club was divided into extremes. Half of the readers had absolutely loved the story, the other half had almost violently hated it. One character was sweet and loving for some, a loser for others.

magicbook

Fiction is pure magic both for the writer who dreams it and creates it, and the reader who interprets it and believes it.

Reading of a good book is a non-stop dialogue where the book speaks and the soul answers.(unknown)

A familiar poem to many pet lovers describes a place called Rainbow Bridge where pets go when they pass on and where their beloved human eventually joins them.  If you have ever lost a special animal companion and wondered if Rainbow Bridge actually exists and what it’s like, the answer is imagined in “The Path to Rainbow Bridge.”

This story, told from the cats’ point of view, takes place during preparations for an incoming resident – a woman named Kate’s elderly Siamese. The cat’s Kate has bonded with throughout her life also reside on Rainbow Bridge and are happy to welcome the new member of their fur family. However, a big surprise awaits one of them after the new cat arrives.

Time seems to shift and draw her into an imaginary deadline that would rival those of the stories she writes for the student paper. Here’s the blurb for my first Cobble Cove mystery, A STONE’S THROW:

Widowed librarian Alicia Fairmont needs answers…

After her husband is killed in a hit and run accident, Alicia travels upstate to his hometown of Cobble Cove, New York, hoping to locate his estranged family and shed light on his mysterious past. Anticipating staying only a weekend, her visit is extended when she accepts a job at the town’s library.

Secrets stretch decades into the past…

Assisted by handsome newspaper publisher and aspiring novelist, John McKinney, Alicia discovers a connection between her absent in-laws and a secret John’s father has kept for over sixty years. But her investigation is interrupted when she receives word her house has burned and arson is suspected, sending her rushing back to Long Island, accompanied by John.

Back in Cobble Cove, cryptic clues are uncovered…

When Alicia returns, she finds a strange diary, confiscated letters, and a digital audio device containing a recording made the day her husband was killed. Anonymous notes warn Alicia to leave town, but she can’t turn her back on the mystery—or her attraction to John. As the pieces begin to fall into place, evidence points to John’s involvement in her husband’s accident.

The past and present threaten to collide, and Alicia confronts her fears…

Has she fallen in love with her husband’s killer?

Penelope groaned. They’d

slept together again. Why did she insist on torturing herself? Although she was

a teeny bit disappointed she couldn’t remember any of it.
Jack laughed at her and

reached out to take her hand. “I’m just teasing. Nothing happened between us.

You just snored. A lot. If getting a hangover doesn’t stop you from getting

drunk again, then just keep in mind if you plan to go home with a guy, don’t

drink yourself into a stupor beforehand. I thought a bear had sneaked into my

apartment.” He laughed, chucking her chin and turning to the whistling kettle

on the stove.
Penelope couldn’t stop

the heat from taking over. She could just imagine the tomato color her face was

sporting. “Does that mean you didn’t take me out of my clothes?” she managed to

ask.
“I was surprised you were

actually balanced enough to slide that little number off, especially with those

fuck-me heels.” His eyes twinkled from above his mug of coffee.
Penelope wasn’t having

any of it. “Ugh, stop. Just stop it. Be serious for once, please. No more of

these double meanings and sexual innuendos. They’re getting a little annoying

and the only thing I want to do right now is find my dress and get home.”

Jack just looked back at

her, a serious expression on his face. “All right, truce. I’ll shut up for now.

Deal?”

Agent Speed-Dating

This past weekend I attended my first writing workshop as a writer. Since I signed up for it my knowledge and experience with the world of publishing has evolved and deepened, so the actual informational sessions were a bit too basic for my needs (but very interesting). However, I had also signed up for a ten-minute pitch session with two agents. This was a total first for me and I had very little clue as to what exactly I was supposed to say or do.

5304347264_642e1d2c12_z

I prepared a short speech, dressed professionally, and tried to ignore the butterflies dancing around in my stomach. But when the time came to face the first agent I’m not going to lie to you, I froze big time. The agent in question was amazing. She reminded of teachers I know realizing one of their students has frozen out of anxiety. She was kind, patient, offering cues as to what information she wanted to hear and volunteered very good advice. In the end she was also kind enough to ask me to send her a sample of the manuscript even though I had totally botched the “audition”.

buterfliesin-stomach

My second face-to-face session was in the afternoon and I was less nervous and a bit more prepared (thanks to the previous agent’s advice) but still anxious. Again, the agent was very kind, showed interest in the story, asked me all the right questions, gave me great advice, and in the end asked me for a sample of the manuscript as well.

That evening I got sick. My body just couldn’t handle all the pressure and anxiety and I crashed. No worries. I have bounced back, all in one piece.

68608360_31003b2a38_o

In spite of being seriously nerve wrecking it was a very good experience. Even though other people said that it had not been the case with them, I have no complaints. I sounded like a bumbling idiot and those two ladies held my hand and managed to coax a mildly-coherent pitch out of me. I was impressed!

A critique panel was also part of the event and, however brutal it was at times, it was extremely enlightening. We got a rare bird view of what the agents look forward in and what makes an agent stop reading a manuscript.

Now I am heading for the big boys. Pushing myself to make reservations for the RWA in Atlanta next year. What are you up to fellow writers?

Natalina wrote her first romance in collaboration with her best friend at the age of 13. Since then she has ventured into other genres, but romance is first and foremost in almost everything she writes. Her novel, We Will Always Have the Closet, is her first published romance.

After earning a degree in tourism and foreign languages, she worked as a tourist guide in her native Portugal for a short time before moving to the United States. She lived in three continents and a few islands, and her knack for languages and linguistics led her to a master’s degree in education. She lives in Virginia where she has taught English as a Second Language to elementary school children for more years than she cares to admit.

Natalina doesn’t believe you can have too many books or too much coffee. Art and dance make her happy and she is pretty sure she could survive on lobster and bananas alone. When she is not writing or stressing over lesson plans, she shares her life with her husband and two adult sons.

We Will Always Have the Closet
by Natalina Reis

Petra Galatas sees the world through rose-colored glasses…

Petra has always chosen to see the best in people. Even her ex-husband’s extramarital affairs couldn’t destroy her faith in humanity. However, as much as she craves love, she’s not ready to trust another man with her heart.

The last place Petra thought she’d meet a guy was a closet in her ex-husband’s house…

While investigating Jonas Linden for millions of dollars in art fraud, Sam Corra’s clues lead him into the most unlikely of places—Jonas’ closet. Even less likely was meeting a woman there…a beautiful woman with honey skin and big brown eyes. Though neither of them divulge the reason they’re there, there’s an instant mutual attraction. And when Sam pursues her, he discovers the beautiful woman is none other than Jonas Linden’s ex-wife.

He’s on a mission to prove Jonas’ guilt. She’s determined to prove his innocence…

Unwilling to believe she had been stupid enough to marry a criminal, Petra attempts an investigation of her own, and unwittingly puts herself—and Sam—in danger.
