Introducing the Characters of The Dressmaker’s Secret

Hi there, readers! So I’ve never been one to talk over someone, and I think characters have a right to a voice, too. So instead of introducing my characters … I’m going to let them introduce themselves!

That’s right – today, Claire and Alice will be writing this post (as their TDS selves!), talking about their book, and perhaps even having some special guests join them.

Are you ready for this?

Well, that’s good, because first you have to wade through a bunch of blog tour info! #bigletdown #howannoying #butIgottashareyall

About the Book

If they knew who she was, they’d never accept what she’s become.

Claire will stop at nothing to provide for her daughters. An unwed mother, she does everything possible to raise them whilst avoiding her scandalous past. Some secrets are best kept, even between mother and daughter.

My Top 5 Writing Distractions (and how I avoid them)

I’m not the only easily-distracted writer, am I? It’s so easy to let distractions take away from my writing time, especially since I have not-ADHD-because-we-don’t-want-to-randomly-say-people-have-ADHD-when-they-don’t-but-focus-issues-for-sure.

But these writing distractions are avoidable (ish) … which is why I’m going to take this opportunity to share my top 5 writing distractions and say how I avoid them (ish).

Hopefully this will be a helpful (and fun!) post that will encourage you to minimize distractions and write that novel!

1: The Endless Void of YouTube

Lately, I’ve actually been too busy to watch YouTube (let alone write sometimes!), but that’s not usually an issue for me.

Because I’ll watch YouTube all the time.

It’s easy to do. You just have to catch up on your favorite YouTuber’s most recent movie review … and then you’re down the rabbit hole.

This can be an awful writing distraction for me since I usually watch more creative-ish things that do inspire me to write my own stories … but not in a healthy “stop watching YouTube videos to write” way but in a “creating twenty-five plot bunnies” way.

Good when I lack inspiration — but bad when I want to get something done.

The YouTube Fix

Other than installing blockers or unplugging the internet (the former of which I don’t want to do and the latter of which would defeat the purpose because a lot of my work is online), self-control is my main answer to this issue.

That’s hard to do, but I tell myself that I will watch a Youtube video (“a” meaning “one”) after I do something.

Taking breaks is healthy and productive, so this will be incentivise you and refresh your mind after a hard spell of work.

2: Just scrolling through social media.

I do this most with Facebook, but you all know what social platform it is that causes you to be badly distracted.

I don’t know what about Facebook calls to me. Probably because I hop on every so often to do something actually productive — then get sucked down the wormhole of seeing one more post.

I use Facebook for learning a lot, so it’s pretty easy to get distracted by that and tell myself it’s okay. But it’s not because it’s distracting.

I try to set myself up with set times to do stuff on Facebook for that reason, but oftentimes I find that I don’t need that time since I’m not much of a Facebooker (e.g. I don’t generally have more than a comment or two to respond to) — which leads to more scrolling.

The Social Media Fix

Again, installing site blockers or turning off the internet may work for some. I like to log out or uninstall apps for a certain amount of time if it’s really bothering me.

More than likely, though, simply jotting down whatever it is I want to do on social media and letting it sit until I’m not in the middle of something else is the best fix for me.

3: Wanting to be with my family.

Everyone goes, “Awww!”

But I’m not really that sweet. I don’t want to talk with my family or spend time with them or really even have them near me. I’m a grouchy teen, remember? Almost not a teen anymore, but you know.

No, I just want to “hang” with them. In that I want them to be available for me at any time as I ignore them and they ignore me.

Generally I used to do most of my work on the couch downstairs for this reason — I don’t like being alone and isolated up in my room, and I like having a place where I can sit quietly and observe everyone.

Problem is, this leads to a lot of distractions, from music and games and TV to people wanting me to do things to simply not being able to get in a zone because I’m watching people live their lives around me.

This is a more personal one, so it won’t apply to most people. But that’s my family situation.

Kell’s Super Late New Year’s Goals and Plans and Suchlike

At last it’s come …

The post you’ve been looking for for almost a week …

Okay, I’ve got to stop doing that to y’all. The belief that your life is hanging on my every word is untrue. So let’s dismiss that from our thoughts. Even though I know that y’all can’t stop thinking about–

*stops self*

I need help.

BUT … let’s just focus on the future. The bright and shining 2020 which so far I’m just kinda numb about which is sure to be absolutely amazing!

I decided to try to have 20 goals for 2020. And I tried to set them using SMART goal strategies (those are great guidelines, by the way, if you’re still working on your goals!).

20 Goals for 2020

Set up a great welcome sequence for my main email list.

Far too often ignored, a great welcome sequence can make or break the readership of her email list! So I’m super excited to get started on that!

Organize my email list as is so that everyone is categorized properly, and growth will be more controllable.

Right now it’s kind of a hot mess, but I’m getting there!

Organize my street team and make it private (e.g. no more people getting in).

I’m making some structural changes, and my street team is one of them. I’m tired of recruiting people for every launch, bugging folks all over my social media, etc. Now is time to make that stop!
First I’ll do some recruiting, though, so watch out for that!

Publish Ivy Introspective.

I’m hoping for a July launch, but we shall see.

Prepare to publish At Her Fingertips and Beyond Her Calling.

I’m not quite sure I’ll actually publish either one of these, but I want to at least have them ready to go (e.g. edited to the point where I’m ready to get an editor started on them).

Write at least one original work from start to finish.

By original, I mean not rewriting an Alice and Ivy book. This could be A Prayer Unanswered, one of the McAllen Brothers books, one of my mannnyyy WWII story ideas, etc. Basically, keep writing.
Also, I hope to write more than this, but you know. The first four books in the Alice and Ivy series need to come out first. *sighs* I also have a couple minor Kees & Colliers stories I want to launch some time soon.

Keep learning Spanish.

I wanted to set a more specific goal for this, but then I realized I didn’t have the mental capacity.
So this isn’t a SMART goal, technically, but I can do Spanish lessons almost every day even if it’s just a little ten-minute one.

Have a certain amount of money in my bank account.

I don’t feel that it’s entirely wise to say how much money I want to have in my bank account online, but it is set, and it’s being tracked in a spreadsheet!

Host at least three big writer events online over the year to focus on my backlist.

I have the entire Kees & Colliers series out, and I need to remind people that they exist! And they’re great! And you should read them!

Get to 900 followers on Instagram.

I’m at 650 now, so I feel like that’s fair. It’s a big goal, yes, but I’m going to continue being active and hopefully eventually helpful there and see how it all goes!

Attend an organized writing event in person.

I’m hoping this will be a mini conference I’ve been eyeing lately – it’s in February. If not, I’ll just … head over to my sister’s house for the afternoon and call it good. *shrugs* I don’t know.

Read the Bible twice a day.

I’ve actually gotten to a good start on this! It probably won’t happen every day, but I’m working on it for sure. At the moment my boyfriend and I are going through John together, which is a nice (*whispers* I need the accountability badly).

Pray … a lot.

Frankly, this is another goal I can’t SMART-erize, but I’m not really sure what “a lot” will look like for me yet. Because “pray without ceasing” means … like never ever stopping? So I need to do that.
Honestly, how many Christians REALLY pray without ceasing? I’m sure not a lot. How could they all? But I bet some do, and I want to be in the exclusive “actually pray as much as God said to” group.

Take Paisley on a walk with the girls.

I really don’t care which girls. “The girls.”
But really, the friends. *everyone is still vaguely confused* But anyways, I want to take Paisley on a hike or something this summer and actually cause her to function. So that’ll be fun.

Eat healthily with some regularity.

I’m never gonna be uber healthy (sorry not sorry), at least until I absolutely have to be, but having lots of nice square meals, cutting down on anything junk-food-y except when I don’t want to (ahh, the ambition!), and trying to not be sick all the time.

Exercise sometimes.

I’m still not sure how often I want this to be, or how I want it to be, but if I could exercise maybe 2x a week, that’d be great. I can build it up from there. As it is, I run around a lot, and I’m not necessarily inactive, but you know. A little more would be better.

Live a little.

By this I mean my only focus needs to not be writing. I want to feel like I have a life, like I have friends, like I have the ability to enjoy the simple, fun things in life.
I’m not horrible at this now, but I could definitely get better at it. Much better.

Again, nothing specific/SMART, but a couple books a month would be fantastic at this point. I’ve so gotten bad at that. I used to read all the time!

DON’T DROP THIS BLOG AGAIN!

IT NEEDED TO BE IN CAPS BECAUSE I WANT TO DO THIS SO MUCH.

And don’t force this blog to be something it’s not again.

#thatstheendofthat

Okay, most of those were very DUMB goals (don’t know what the acronym would be – Distasteful, Universally Bad, Measureless … Bratty?), but hey, I tried.

Awesome Stuff Happening in 2020

I don’t for sure know all the things that will be happening in 2020. Honestly, it feels like a kinda uneventful in-between year.

But hopefully, unless something changes, I’ll go on my first date (yeah, no, that hasn’t actually happened because life is a cruel master – well, mostly to me), turn 19 (unless I die “something changing” in this case would be super weird but … who knows? Time travel, mayhap?), raise some puppies (we’ll probably breed Aubrey this summer again unless her health doesn’t allow it), work hard (albeit because I must), and learn a lot (because life does that!).

Remember the blog tour!

Remember that there’s a blog tour and a LOT of other events going on!

You can read all about them here.

TTFN!

~Kell~

P.S.

Tell me … what goals do you have for 2020? Am I the only one still referring to this year as 2019? Are you excited for this year – or just blah? And how’s 2020 been going for you so far? Also, do you like my DUMB goals?

The Dressmaker’s Secret – Introducing the Blog Tour, Giveaway, & Other Festivities

HEY THERE! Long time no see, right?! (I was … busy this Wednesday. Not even kidding – my week has been messyyyy, but I’m here! Will explain later about Wednesday!) How’s everyone? I’m too excited to be legible so here we go!!!

THE DRESSMAKER’S SECRET IS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON! You can buy it there or review it there or just drool over the gorgeous cover by Carpe Librum Book Design!

This story which I have poured so much into, my first heart project, the first in a GIGANTIC (and I ain’t kiddin’, kid) series, is OUT. It’s LIVE! People can read it and love it (or hate it … oops), and … yeah. Sorry. I’m just experiencing so many emotions right now. *fans myself dramatically*

So here I am, typing this post and listening to The Last of the Real Ones to calm down (longgg story), and I had better just let you get on to the info! I promised tours and giveaways and *tears up*

MY BABY IS OUT INTO THE WORLD! The book I love almost as much as my dog, Gidget. Who I loved almost as much as I will probably love my firstborn child. (Not my second-born – sweetie, if you read this someday, you know you’re my favorite.) (*cracks up laughing at my own stupid insensitive joke*)

(Sorry, I’m in a weird mood. If I ever have kids, I will love them equally. And a lot more than a dog or a book. Though dogs are better than books, just so you know. Being … alive and all. #clarificationneeded #becauseImnotasociopath #atleastnotmuchofasociopath)

Well. That couldn’t have gotten any stupider (*whispers* more stupid). Let’s just move on to the blog/Instagram tour, hosted by the lovely and talented Victoria Lynn!

Best of luck!

The Bookstagram Tag

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m running a bookstagram tag with THREE giveaways (one of which is still running today and another of which will be announced TOMORROW AFTERNOON). It’s on my Instagram account now!

Check it out! It’s pretty easy to enter – you just follow the tags! This week we had a writer-themed giveaway going with books by K.M. Weiland of Helping Writers Become Authors, and next week will be a reader-themed giveaway!

This week’s writer-themed giveaway:

(Love those books!)

TODAY & TOMORROW ONLY: Extra Bookstagram Entries! (even if you don’t have Instagram!)

Whether or not you have an Instagram account, you have a way to earn extra entries for the current giveaway on Instagram …

Share about the launch of The Dressmaker’s Secret — anywhere, everywhere. Your stories & feed on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest, etc. Link to Amazon or my website and tell people the book is out!

You can get an extra TWO entries for every social media platform/method you use! (If you post it on your feed and your stories, that’s four entries — if you post it on your Facebook page and your Facebook profile, that’s four entries.)

When you’re done, before 3 PM PST this Sunday, message me on Instagram if you have it OR if you don’t have it, email me (contact@kellynrothauthor.com). Just send a quick message like this:

“Hi Kell! I shared about your book on my feed, stories, and Facebook profile!”

And I’ll try to reply but more than likely I’ll just count it and move on. However, if you did something like that (^^) you would get EIGHT entire entries into last week’s giveaway!

Note that I will not be able to count your entries unless you send them to me BEFORE the deadline. After that, the prizes will be drawn, and there’s really nothing I can do without making it unfair for those who got done in time.

I’m counting on YOU, my writer friends! Make this happen! Giveaway entries are open until 3:00 PM PST on January 12th.

Facebook Party???

I’m still debating … Facebook party? Would y’all come if I did it some weekend during the tour? Would it be fun to have the characters show up and answer questions? Or should I do a live? What do you want?

Let me know in the comments!

We could also do an Instagram live at some point!

Again, up to you all – if you want it, it could happen during these next few weeks. I could answer questions live as well as any questions you want to ask ahead of time.

And a brief explanation of Wednesday:

So I said in my last post that I would share my 2020 goals and plans with you on Wednesday, and that didn’t happen. Why? Well, simply put, I ran out of time, AND I wasn’t sure what my goals/plans would be. Still ain’t.

My personal life? Yeah, sure, hang out with my guy as much as I can this summer and read the Bible and pray and be a faithful employee and yada yada. But in writing? Ehhhh … it’s fuzzy? (DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE SURREALNESS OF THAT.) (I’m READING THE BIBLE WITH MY BOYFRIEND EVERY DAY, and I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO WRITE NEXT!? Am I even Kell? WHO IS POSSESSING MY BODY!?!?!?!)

Still, I will have that out NEXT MONDAY unless I die over the weekend; I mean it’s possible – so be looking for that.

Sorry, ladies and gents. Y’all know I want to give you consistent, good content, but that can’t always happen – well, the consistency. I’m always good. *flips hair* *mostly just gets a lot of hair in my mouth* *spits and combs my hair back into place*

Anyways. Coming this Monday, Kell’s Super Late New Year’s Goals and Plans and Suchlike.

TTFN!

~Kell~

P.S.

ARE YOU AS EXCITED AS I AM??? Are you entering any giveaways? Participating in any fun events? Would you attend a Facebook party? What about an Instagram live? What kinds of things do you find exciting during launches? We definitely need some of the characters to talk soon, right?

Also, how have you been? No, really.

Why I’m Super Excited about the Relaunch of The Dressmaker’s Secret

Hey readers! I’m back, and this time I want to talk about something I’m legitimately excited – nay, even thrilled – about … I am super pumped for the launch of The Dressmaker’s Secret!

And here are my reasons:

Reason #1

It’s a rewritten version, and it’s probably my favorite version I’ve ever rewritten! It’s exactly as I’ve always imagined but been unable to write, been too frightened to publish.

The story touched me in a way I hadn’t known a book I was writing could! Souls Astray was my messy book that helped me process a lot of different emotions, sure, but The Dressmaker’s Secret – the whole Alice and Ivy series, in fact – has always been neater, cleaner.

I was surprised I could do what I did with it. But now that I have, I am so excited!

Reason #2

I think I now have the skills and energy to focus in on the marketing that it takes to introduce a book to a lot of readers! It probably won’t be a #1 bestseller, or even a bestseller, though we don’t know what will happen yet.

Still, I believe I have the ability to reach more readers than ever before, and I’m thrilled that it’s possible more people might read this book which I believe has the potential to both entertain and touch people!

Reason #3

This is my heart series. This is the one I love. This is the one with Alice, Jordy, Ivy, Peter, Nettie … and down the road we have Patrick, Ruby, Colin, Gretchen, Truitt … just beautiful people who I’ve invested so much in!

I feel like I’m finally able to give this series the launch, the beginning, that it deserves. And then I can keep writing, keep pushing, keep growing, and some day, some day, you’ll remember the name. *coughs* Don’t mind my Ed Sheeran obsession that has come far too late in my life.

And I want to take these books with me. Even if they’re obscure earlier works that some people occasionally discover and go, “Wow, she really did the Marvel thing with this series no one remembers,” I still want them to be there – and I feel like I’m bringing them from “they didn’t exist” obscurity into “they kinda existed” obscurity.

How Did 2019 Go, Anyway?

Hey everyone!

This is my first post on my brand new (ish) blog, and I’m super excited! I can’t wait to share more awesome posts with you. But this first post is a boring one just talking about the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE WORLD, THE AMAZING KELLYN ROTH.

Okay, you’ve got me – I’m not really the most important person in the world. But hey, I got you to click on this blog post. *shrugs* That was cool. Don’t know how it happened, but it did.

Now that I’ve got you here, want to hear about my year?

Good, because you have absolutely no choice but to read on because … um … I have something I haven’t told many people about which I shall share more about in this post.

Okay, but seriously, my boyfriend is not clickbait. He’s a human being. Also, you’ve already clicked.

THIS IS WHY I DIDN’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS (& it’s new, too, so I haven’t gotten a single chance to, but you know).

I thought I was going to keep this aspect of my life private (maybe even forever) (well, not literally) (but as years from now I’ll announce I’m pregnant or my husband died or something, and you all would be like, “I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW YOU KNEW A MAN!”) (or alternately nothing would come of it, and I just wouldn’t say anything), but he said it was okay, and I’m already very guilty.

Relationships are serious, especially relationships like this, and people on the internet don’t understand that. *glares at you, expecting you to take this all very seriously even though I have cracked way too many jokes already*

I feel like I’m already developing tone issues, and I’m just 200 words in. Why am I blogging again? I can’t blog. Blogging is hard, and wrapups are hard, and I’ve already told you the only thing about 2019 that wasn’t either ironically dramatic or sadly floppy.

Image result for i'm fine hercules gif

Let’s just talk about 2019.

What did I say I was gonna do in 2019?

It’s best to start with promises I never should have made. (How could you do this, babe?) (man, that was the most obscure reference I could have made.)

I frankly did not do well on my goals! Which is something new for me. I always have done well with my goals – and so it was shocking to pull them up (for my guy, actually) and realize – wow, I didn’t do them.

(Apologies for the blurriness – it’s just screenshots on my phone with text written over them.) (I’m writing this post long after midnight, okay?)

At first this made me sad – well, I had known all along that I didn’t do what I wanted to in 2019 (shocker!), but this was a confirmation.

But when I think about it, at least I know now what I can’t do – and I know that I can weather a storm. Or 50 storms. In fact, y’all are welcome to throw storms at me (please don’t), because I can take ’em as long as God exists! (Which He always will.)

It’s also taught me that I can’t do everything (more on that later) and even when I feel like everything and everyone is against me, and I just want to give up and die already, there is always something to look forward to. (And even if there’s not, there is a God, and He does love us.)

What did I do in 2019?

That was my rough estimate of what I did and didn’t do over the year, but here’s what I did do overall:

Wrote & edited Flowers in Her Heart (35k).

Took waaayyy too long. Like three or four months longer than I intended?

Edited The Lady of the Vineyard (40k).

This actually went well.

Edited Souls Astray (65K).

Okay, this went really well, too.

Wrote & edited From Now ‘Til Forever (10k).

Again took me too long, but yeah.

Wrote Love Once Lost (70k-ish).

Ohhhhh, boy! This first draft is such a hot mess. Not even sure I can stick with the (somewhat daring for Christian fiction) plotline I chose. Eesh.

Wrote A LOT of Alone in Berlin and A Broken Loyalty, and bits of Ivy Introspective, At Her Fingertips (mild rewrite), A Prayer Unanswered, and a bunch of other stories.

Did not finish any of them.

Wrote a bazillion outlines.

I always have ideas. I don’t always finish the ideas, but I do have ideas.
IDEAS A-PLENTY. (I wanted you to read that in an old prospector voice, as in mining for ideas, but as I tried to figure out how to do that, my brain exploded, so pardon me for not making that clearer.)
I need to sit down and write them in the future, though.

Rewrote The Dressmaker’s Secret basically from scratch (70k) & prepared it for publication.

It took too long. Like, literally, how was I working on this for so long?
This was probably the best thing I did all year, and I am immensely pleased. Everything about it makes me smile.

Reveries Is Ceasing to Exist (But I’m Still Blogging)

Hey everyone!

Long time, no post. Frankly, it’s scary how easy it is for me to drop this blog … and that’s kind of concerning, don’t you think?

It’s almost like something isn’t meant to be.

Almost like … almost like the blog is slowly ceasing to exist.

*everyone gasps really loud, pretending they haven’t read the title, and knowing that I’m just being dumb and making a big fuss about changing “Reveries” to like “Thoughts of a Crazy Woman Who Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Write Anything Anyone Reads.”*

Thanks for humoring me, y’all. But I’m actually not changing the name of Reveries to “Thoughts of a Crazy Woman Who Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Write Anything Anyone Reads.”

No, ladies and gents. No, indeed. Instead, I’m changing the name to “Kellyn Roth, Author …’s blog.”

*you all slowly blink at me*

Okay, yes, I will just explain without beating around the bush.

You see, something hasn’t … been right about Reveries lately.

Have you noticed that? I sure have.

Y’all aren’t commenting a lot.

I’m not posting a lot.

My posts aren’t fun to read.

I keep forgetting to write like myself and instead write like a robot. *insert robot noises* *insert me doing a very bad robot dance* *insert me giving up said dancing because I LEGIT CANNOT Y’ALL*

Basically, I decided I was going to write very professional, neat posts – BUT I CAN’T. I can’t dance, AND I can’t write professional posts.

And yeah, I know I could technically write professional posts that were interesting – and when asked, a lot of you have kindly said that my pro posts are interesting – but I … do not find them interesting?

Therefore, being the one who writes them, I am not interested enough to actually get the job done. It’s work now instead of play.

So I’m unionizing. Er, well, I mean, I’m turning my blog back into a fun place for all things random.

Because that’s the me that Reveries – now just “my blog” or “Kell’s blog” – needs. *ahem*

Also, I’m so broke, y’all.

Okay, I’m not really broke. I actually have a sizeable amount of savings.

But here’s the thing. I want to continue saving. I’ll explain more later (if I remember), but basically, I realized I really need to crack down on my budget.

So it makes sense to combine websites to save money, and –

GET TO THE POINT!

Basically, the blog will now be located on my main website:

KELLYNROTHAUTHOR.COM/BLOG

And you can follow me there!

As you can see, all the Reveries posts have already been sent over there, and I’ll be posting my first official post this Saturday on that blog (NOT on this one!).

This blog will be put out of commission and eventually shut down.

So if you want to follow me, please don’t delay! Now is the time – head over to kellynrothauthor.com/blog and sign up (there’s a widget on the side bar).

And tell your friends that Kell is back and bigger and better than ever (er, figuratively … the bigger part, I mean).

God bless y’all, and have the most amazing first week of the year ever! It’s so nuts that it’s 2020, but I’m so very glad it is (and those thoughts will be coming your way this Saturday if you subscribe).

TTFN!

~Kell~

p.s.

*gets all teary* Last time I’ll ask you a question on this blog … WILL YOU SUBSCRIBE ALREADY!? *laughs* Okay, seriously, though, tell me how your 2020 has went, what you’ve loved about Reveries, and what you’d like to see more of! I’m taking requests.
