“Freeze!”
Doyle tapped the brim of his hat to put the music on pause and looked up. About three meters away stood a real-life Annie Oakley. Her dark hair glinted red where the sun hit it, twisted up behind her with chunks flying out around her shoulders. Her shirt was filthy and sweat pulled it tight around her chest, revealing all the curves underneath. Her feet were planted firmly hip width apart, faded brown boots peeking out from beneath the bottoms of what looked like part dress, part pants with two rows of buttons that drew his eyes to her tiny waist and full hips. She pointed the business end of a double barrel shotgun directly at him, and it was obvious she knew how to use it.
Doyle froze obediently, mortified that his jeans probably wouldn’t hide how turned on he was by this dirty, dangerous, and oh so delicious sight before him.
He raised his hands in surrender.
“Stop moving you idiot,” the woman hissed at him.
Doyle complied, but cleared his throat to talk. He couldn’t let her see the TCR or do anything that might alter the timeline. He also couldn’t let her shoot him.
“Shh,” she stopped him before he started.
“Look here,” Doyle began, annoyed that she wouldn’t even let him talk. “I’m not a bad guy.”
The blast of the shotgun exploded around him, making his head buzz and ears ring. Doyle dropped to the ground, sure he’d been hit, but too shocked to feel anything yet. He watched, heart beating awfully heavy for one who was likely losing blood at an alarming rate.
The woman lowered the gun, yet kept a good grip on it as she cautiously approached him. But when she reached him, she stepped right over him.
Doyle tugged at his ears, willing them to clear and rolled over to his other side.
He nearly peed himself when he saw the mountain lion lying on its side in a pool of blood inches behind him.
“Holy shit.”
The woman finally looked up from the beast she’d been examining and scowled at him.
“You are not from around here, are you?” she asked, hand on hip.
“Uh,” Doyle scrambled into a standing position, brushed himself off and stood to face her, only to find the long barrel of the gun in his face. “Please don’t hurt me.”
The woman laughed, and her shoulders shook. Her smile and the way her hazel eyes crinkled in the corners made him relax.
Sure enough, she lifted the gun and slung it over her shoulder. A clear message that he would respect—armed and dangerous, but trusting him for now.
“My name is Doyle,” he said.
“Doyle?” She made a face. “That your first name?”
“My uh, my first name is Walter,” he said, realizing it might be more familiar in this time.
“That’s a nice strong name, Wally. I’m Sadie. Sadie Rogers. This here is my ranch. You’re lucky my husband wasn’t the one to catch you prowling around.”
She was married. For some reason Doyle’s heart sunk, which was ridiculous considering how dangerous it would be for the timeline if he somehow magically seduced this amazing woman. Yeah, she took out a mountain lion that was about to kill me like it happened every Tuesday. Talk about out of his league anyway. She probably had some buff cowboy with rippling muscles and sun-kissed skin, not a tech-head nerd like him, gym or no gym.
“I guess I am lucky. Thank you for saving me.”
Sadie scowled in the direction of the cat. “Damn shame. I hate killing animals. They’re just out here trying to survive like the rest of us.”
Doyle nodded. “I agree for what it’s worth. But I’m still grateful you chose my life over his.”
“Hers,” she said, eyes drawn back to survey Doyle. “Men. Always thinking if it’s tough and capable it can’t be a woman.” She spat on the ground, making him jump.

There’s something inherently marvelous about dragons. They fill that liminal space between the fantastic and the real, a spot that could be magical but doesn’t have to, a creature that just might have existed in the real world but is so easy to picture in a fantasy realm. They’re powerful, greedy, generous, fierce, protective, and overwhelming. Dragons have been imagined with every personality type under the sun, and all of them seem to fit. Dragons can be anything, they can be everything—they can be the ultimate evil or the perfect love interest. And if you’ve read any of my work, I think you know which way I chose to go with dragons, at least this time around.
It's not that I don’t love the Smaugs and the Fáfnirs of mythology, because I totally do. When I was figuring out the Luckless books, though, I decided that in a world full of monsters, I needed some immense and powerful being to be on the side of humanity, and dragons seemed like the perfect choice. Flying, armored, fire-breathing badasses swooping down on their fellow rift-side predators in order to protect the vulnerable inhabitants of their new world…there’s too much to like. I ran with it, and eventually added my own mythological elements to it and crafted a love story that has FATE written all over it in glowing lights.
I love a good love story. That said, I’m not generally into the “fated mates” trope, the sort of thing where two people (or more, I’m happy with more) get together because destiny told them to. It’s really not my jam, and yet I made an exception for this series. Why? I’m not entirely sure. Maybe because in the context of fantasy, fated mates are easier to accept. Maybe because it just seemed right for these characters and their epic story. Maybe because I don’t actually dislike the trope as much as I think I do. Hard to say. But I rolled with it, and made my dragon (who can take a humanoid form, because there’s monsterfucking and then there’s anatomically impossible monsterfucking, maybe I’ll delve into that in a later book) and my human fall hopelessly in love with each other, in that “together forever” kind of way that makes a good romance novel so enjoyable to read.
It's magical. That’s the point. I put these two people in a magical world (it’s a pretty shitty world in a lot of ways, but there are elements of magic that make it compelling) and gave them to each other, to rely on and fight for and adore, and they ran with it. The story is magical, the love is magical…the crap I put them through is hellish, but even that has some magical results! Dragons, magic, and true love all wrapped together in a wordy package—it’s one of my favorite things, and these are some of my favorite stories.
Go and get you some dragons, friends! They don’t have to be mine—just make sure they’re magical.
About the Author: Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, "See ya!" She also started writing, because some things she just thought she could do better. She's still climbing that ladder, but can't stop herself from writing, or from sharing what she creates.
Cari enjoys a wide range of literary genres, from the classics (get em, Ahab) to science fiction and fantasy of all types, to historical fiction and reference materials (no, seriously, there are so many great encyclopedias out there). Olivia perched on the satin coverlet of the carved canopy bed, surveying the impossibly opulent bedroom where she had been installed. The chamber had to be at least thirty feet square, with a gilt-encrusted ceiling that soared ten feet above her head. Tall windows framed in emerald velvet looked out upon a verdant lawn that stretched to the ocean. Distant sails danced upon slate-blue waves and the breeze wafting through the open casements carried a hint of salt. The late afternoon sun sparkled among the crystal tears of the chandelier, casting shards of rainbow upon the polished oak floor. Nearer the bed, a plush Chinese carpet soothed the residual blisters on her bare feet.
She wore one of the delicate silk camisoles Andrew had selected for her as they’d passed through the town. Nothing else. The other garments he’d chosen hung in the rosewood wardrobe, all but the ball gown, which would be delivered, the dressmaker had promised, by Saturday noon.
Cocktails would be served at seven, Andrew had told her, and dinner at eight. In the meantime, he’d instructed her to await him here, in her current state of undress.
She’d never even considered disobeying.
Fingers entwined upon her lap, she breathed deeply in a struggle to calm her racing heart. Her nipples knotted against the silk, aching for stimulation. Her sex was as moist as the humid summer afternoon, her juices perhaps staining the pale green satin beneath her bare bottom. No matter. Andrew MacIntyre could afford to replace it.
