The Power of What Art Can Do in Everyday Life

Blog post by Heather Sanderson

The full-color version of What Art Can Do updated (from the black and white version that came out a couple of years ago) with new info and 80 images of Janet Morgan’s work. True to the content of the conversation within the pages (which includes the importance of making a mess, stepping into the unknown, and problem-solving through creating art), it’s the first book I’ve ever done all of the layout for in InDesign. I had no clue what I was doing, really. And, through trial and error, best guesses, YouTube tutorials, and some way-back memories of using QuarkXpress for a newspaper job over twenty years ago, it all came together!

I’m laughing as I only just now realize that I do truly walk the walk of everything I share through my writing. It wouldn’t have been in alignment (or possible financially) to hire someone to do this. I like learning. I like thinking through things. I like creating. I like coming out at the other side of a project with a new set of skills. It takes more time. It presents a lot of challenges. It requires patience. And it is all part of the process and learning which Janet shares in the story of her journey with art. She’s done a lot of wild and outrageous things through her work and, I believe, wouldn’t have it any other way. I hope you’ll be inspired through our conversation to take a look at your own creative journey, whatever it may be!

This unique book also includes a plant-spirit reading in a true spirit of collaboration not just with one another and other humans, but with the plant world and has a set of prompts for self-exploration. You can even draw or write in the pages at the back of the book to make it interactive and your own.

I wanted to share a brief excerpt from the conclusion here to help inspire you to consider getting a copy and exploring even more.

From the Conclusion of What Art Can Do:

Success isn’t about acceptance or rejection; there are so many ways to live a life and to find ways to bring your work into the world even when other people say “no,” or “you can’t.” What Janet has shown me is that when you start to put yourself and your work out into the world; to own who you are, your voice, and share yourself with others—that is a big part of what success is. However, it is not the only part. Success, as we tend to see it, is centered on the individual and the ego being satisfied. It’s often measured by money and celebrity. If that is the only definition of success, then most of us are unsuccessful at life. This I do not believe.

Success isn’t centralized, fixed, or measurable. If I were to redefine it right now, based on this conversation, success is about connection. It’s about teaching, sharing, trying something new. It’s encouraging and supporting one another as we all step into the unknown again and again every day. Success is a web, not a mountain. And because of that, true success is often invisible, intangible, and hard to feel or believe in.

Our current views of success also create separation. For example, while seeing pieces of art in museums is valuable, it also brings up many questions—whose art is allowed in those spaces now and historically? What are the barriers of entry to view it? How does it inspire others to create and how does it shut people down? When making and experiencing art is accessible, meaning it doesn’t require money, much time, training, or supplies, then it is available to everyone. Art becomes inclusive and unifying.

Expanded Distribution for Majestic Wisdom Publishing Books

There were a few reasons why I launched my books exclusively with Amazon at first. The top one being budget… Each of the 30+ books that I have published have been written, produced, and distributed on a zero dollar budget. Skill swaps were done for most of the editing and Amazon offered free tools to make an eBook and a cover. I figured out how to then magically turn the eBook file into a print book in their system without any design tools. It wasn’t perfect… but it was perfect enough. And it was challenging and fun!

Other potential publishing partners, like Ingram, had fees that were too high for me, but those have now vanished! And, sticking with just Amazon (even though they are big and have a lot of things, let’s say, not going for them) felt safe. There was a sense of control. It was scary to think of my little books going out further into the world. Now, five years into this publishing journey, it’s no longer scary, it’s exciting! So I have taken the training wheels off and my books are rolling out in more stores around the world (and are even available from your local bookshop if you ask them to order in a copy).

All of the “Dreaming with the Plants,” “The Future is Possible,” poetry, and healing arts paperback books are now available from:

Amazon (worldwide)

BetterWorld Books (US)

Booksamillion (US)

BookShop.org (US)

McNally Robinson (CA)

Waterstones (UK)

And just one title (so far) is available at Powells.

The first four “Dreaming with the Plants” (Dandelion, Violet, Nettle, and Mugwort) and all seven of “The Future is Possible” eBooks are now available from:

Amazon (worldwide)

Apple (worldwide)

Barnes & Noble (US)
Dreaming with the Plants / The Future is Possible

BookTopia (AU)

Indigo (CA)

Kobo (worldwide)

And should be available wherever eBooks are sold… You might even be able to get the eBooks at your local library through Overdrive.

These lists are not exhaustive and if you find my books somewhere else, let me know! And, as always, if you do buy a book (or two) and can leave a review on any of these sites or over on Goodreads, I’d be ever-so grateful.

Excerpt from Dreaming with Mugwort

by Heather Sanderson

Dreaming with Mugwort continues to be the top-selling book from Majestic Wisdom Publishing! It was also one of the first books I wrote in the “Dreaming with the Plants” series of books. As my writing has evolved since then, it was time to revisit Mugwort and give the book a bit of a polish. The English edition is now updated and revised with new information!

I wanted to share an excerpt with you here (and plan to share excerpts from all of my books going forward).

From the Introduction to Dreaming with Mugwort:

The first time I heard about Mugwort, I was skeptical. Everything I read indicated that she could enhance psychic abilities and dreams. Perplexed, my brain grappled with this information and tried to figure out how Mugwort could do this. I scanned photos of the plant and wondered if a part of her would pop open to show me the answer. Would her green and silver feathery leaves tell me? Maybe her stem would open and psychic, dream-inducing constituents would walk out and identify themselves. When that didn’t happen, I convinced myself that it wasn’t true.

In denial of my own psychic abilities and gifts, I doubted hers. Envious, I yearned for what she had to offer while simultaneously discounting it. While my eyes squinted, nose turned up with dismissal, my heart ripped open grasping for her magic. I’m not one who usually needs scientific proof, and in this case, my doubt gave me everything I needed.

Since Mugwort has such a strong association with the moon, feminine energy, and the dream world, one of the first things I made was a dream pillow. The instructions indicated that if you are sensitive, avoid putting too much of the plant in the little sachet. Already cloaked in an armor of rational skepticism and doubt, I disregarded this suggestion, took a fistful of her leaves and flowers and tied up my bundle. That night I tucked it under my pillow, closed my eyes, lay my head down, and immediately felt a response.

A pool of energy flooded the back of my neck. My eyes widened as if keeping them open would help me understand what was happening. The tingling sensation moved like wet sand up through the back of my skull, filtered across my crown, and settled in my third eye. The energy was active and activating. My third eye vibrated, expanding and contracting as if on its own. Underused, it felt sludgy and resistant to this sudden nudge, but it was too late to turn back.

Top 25 Majestic Wisdom Books of 2024

My favorite New Year’s Day tradition is to see which books sold the most copies in the past year (or as I like to think of it, who made their way out into the world?).

The same three books are the top three as last year! I’ve put an asterisk beside any books that weren’t in the top 25 of 2023 but made it in 2024. Fun!

Three book projects have been in development in 2024 and will launch (with any luck and support) in 2025! If you’d like to be notified when these are available, follow me on Amazon or sign up for my newsletter (or both!).

Thanks for your continued readership and support (they mean the world to me).

The most popular books in 2024 were:

Dreaming with Mugwort Building the Future Now Through Reiki: A Conversation with Nathalie Biermanns Dreaming with Nettle Dreaming with Elder Dreaming with Rosemary Holding Space to Heal: A Conversation with Holly Ramey Dreaming with Dandelion Dreaming with Violet Sister,: a collection of poems Dreaming with Oak Soñando con romero * Dreaming with Birch Dreaming with Lavender Dreaming with Redwood Dreaming with Willow Building the Future Now Through Yoga: A Conversation with Deanna Green Dreaming with Goldenrod * Dreaming with Hawthorn Dreaming with Heather Dreaming with Sunflower * Loving Kindness for Everyday Life Dreaming with Holly * Dreaming with Red Clover Dreaming with Sumac * Dreaming with Trillium *

2024 also saw the launch of Fortunes Told, a new flash fiction audio book!

If you have any of my books and can leave a review on Amazon, that would be extra awesome. To see a bunch of positive reviews you can look here too!

Thank you for reading and dreaming with the plants and The Future is Possible series. For a list of all available titles, click here.
