Virtue Fall by Kashmira Majumdar
Jonah Shapiro is no model student, even by the lax standards of his preppy New England boarding school. His penchant for rule-breaking and leather makes him the bête noire of his teachers—except the earnest, tea-drinking, cardigan-wearing Mr. Donovan, who’s determined to not give up on Jonah. Life used to be simpler five years ago when Mr. Donovan was just Head Boy Nick and Jonah’s best friend. Easier, too, for Jonah to kiss him when it was dark and no one was watching. Now the rules of the game have changed, and so have the consequences for flouting them…
Striking Gold by S.A. James
The day Daniel met Silver shone brightly for a number of reasons. It was the last day of high school, but it was also the day he realized he could never leave home. Being the son of an alcoholic mom didn’t leave many choices for Daniel. He could only hope that life and love would treat him kindly.
Full Marks by Asta Idonea
Jacob Corby decides to attend his university reunion for one reason only: Professor Hobbs. Arthur Hobbs is surprised to see loner Jacob’s name on the attendance list, but it is enough to make him change his mind about going to the event. After all, he’s always harboured forbidden feelings for his favourite student.
Lessons for a Lifetime by Hudson Lin
When high school English teacher Patrick signs on to teach an adult ESL course on the weekends, he doesn’t know his life is about to change. Into the makeshift community center classroom walks Salim—tall, soulful, a refugee from Ethiopia with a heart for storytelling and a talent for music.
A midwinter offer to drive Salim home after class one week leads to the breakdown of the student-teacher boundary. As their relationship grows, the prospect of moving in together brings out both their insecurities about commitment and money. But working through differences makes them stronger and Patrick soon realizes that perhaps he had been the student all along.
Welcome to Ms Skinner’s Freshman Composition by Aila Alvina Boyd
After auditioning for a college production, a first year professor finds herself being cast as the romantic lead opposite her least favorite student. Just as it appears as though the production is going to be an utter failure, something clicks. From there on out, chemistry between the two of them no longer needs to be faked.
Piece of Cake by Valentine Wheeler
Richard’s daughters are worried about him, alone in his house after retirement, so they sign him up for a cooking class at the local community center. But what he ends up finding is more than just baked goods.
Professor Ghost by Damian Serbu
Antonio arrives on campus for his first day of college a little overwhelmed from the experience of moving from a rural area to the big city, not to mention that he firmly planted himself in the closet and intends to stay there. When a ghost appears before him on the first night, his terror gradually gives way to curiosity, as this hot specter promises to mentor him toward a better, and out, life at college.
Bare by Jack Harbon
Before his best friend went away for vacation, Levi Singh promised her that he would take life by the balls and live on the edge. So, when the nude model for his art class doesn’t show, Levi takes it upon himself to volunteer. To his surprise, no one seems to be staring too long at him. No one, that is, except for his professor.
When Noah Rose suggests working with him on an assignment after class, Levi suspects he might be looking for something else. Something Levi will happily give him.
The Botanist’s Apprentice by Arden Powell
Graduate student Eli Katz approaches the accomplished botanist, Robert Lord-Harding, to request access to his greenhouse of magical flora. Though Lord-Harding is reluctant to take on a new apprentice after the scandal of his last one, he is intrigued by Eli’s academic work, and agrees.
Eli is primarily interested in the violet man-eater, a carnivorous plant that preys on men by emitting a certain pheromone, luring them in close and then devouring them. Eli wants to return the man-eater to its classic status as a sexual performance enhancer, and spends his days studying the plant. But is it as safely secured in Lord-Harding’s greenhouse as they both believe, or will its pheromones wreak havoc with their new apprenticeship?

Golden Afternoons
I got sick the summer of 2010. At first, it was slow. A little fatigue here, a little light-headedness there, but by the time the scorching heat of July settled in over the little town of Echola, Alabama, I was having one or two fainting spells a day. My mother, bless her heart, was always trying to cure what ailed me, though it never quite worked. She was the best cardiothoracic surgeon this side of the Mason-Dixon Line. She was known for the occasional sarcastic quip, wearing braids down to her belly, and a nearly unscathed OR record. They called her the Queen of Hearts.
But, no matter how sick I got, my mother always expected me outside right at seven o’clock, ready to tend the garden. The day I met the witches was no different. We were up and outside a good five minutes early, trying to beat the already record-breaking heat. Barely past six a.m. and we were already pushing ninety. I joined her in the rose bushes, pruning and picking as we talked about our plans for the day.
“And I want you to go over The Odyssey one more time. I don’t feel you got the Cyclops as well as you should have.” Ma was sweating more than a tall glass of tea as she worked those beds.
“I think I got it just fine,” I answered her. “I just didn’t like it.” I worked my dark hands deep into the soil and pulled out an overgrown dandelion. It seemed like no matter how many I plucked, five would grow back in its place by the next morning.
Ma turned to me, her brow finely arched and her lips spread in a smirk. “Give it another read. You’ll appreciate it more the second time ‘round.”
“Why don’t I just read Midsummer again?” I asked, sheepishly avoiding her gaze as I busied myself in the roses. “I mean, it is midsummer.”
“Because you’ve already read that one five times.”
“So?” I kept my expression genial, not wanting to risk my mother thinking I was taking a tone with her.
“It’s important you expand your library.”
“That’s it?” I raised my gloved hands to the sky and pretended to plead with a higher power in hopes of a better reading assignment.
“Well then, fine.” She let out a low hmph and brushed the dirt from her hands. “Let’s just say it’s because I told you to, Al.”
“You’ve always said that’s a lazy reason to give.”
My mother rolled her eyes to the clouds in the sky. “Lord help me.” She huffed. “Fine, don’t read it. When your teachers give you trouble, don’t you come cryin’ to me, ’cause I did all I could to help you.”
Anything sounded better than suffering through Homer again. “Just twenty pages or so then?”
“Twenty.” My mother tsk’d. “Arright, arright. Twenty it is, but don’t go runnin’ off today. We’ve got a lot of work to do when I get home. Your auntie is droppin’ in this weekend and I want the place sparklin’, foyer to the chimney. Collect some of the collard greens from the vegetable patch today, would ya? I’m thinkin’ we’ll make a casserole.”
I assured her I understood and then turned back to uprooting an especially stubborn creeping vine. She’d just brought over a big old tin water can when a little compact car drove up on our gravel drive.
“Guess that’s me.” My mother turned her attention to Jackson. He was a tall man who always looked just a little too big for his ride. He usually struggled to get out of the car in time to get Ma’s door for her. “I’ll be home ‘round supper.”
I wiped my palms on my pants before wrapping her into a hug. The smell of her morning coffee still clung to her blouse.
“And don’t forget to water out back,” she called to me as they were pulling off. “Those river birches need it!”
The car backed out of the driveway, and I waved to them as they left. As soon as she was gone, I tightened my headwrap and turned to my watering duties. I tended to each bush with care and pulled a few stray weeds along the way. Kudzu was coming closer and closer to our little haven, and even if gardening was more Ma’s hobby than mine, I didn’t want to risk losing all our hard work to that tangled-vine devil. After finishing the roses, I went back inside to cool off in front of the fan. I sat there for a little while and let the breeze hit my face.
I still had the back bushes to do, but I decided to treat myself to a couple of speckled eggs and toast before hiking it all the way back to the orchard. If Ma had been there to ask, I’d say I wanted a break from the sun so I wouldn’t burn to a crisp before noon. But on the inside, I knew I was only eating because I wanted to have a full stomach and energy to burn. There was something I loved about that thick brush. The hum of cicadas and june bugs, the lush green forestry, and the shade from the hundred-year-old oaks. I’d go to water the trees, but I’d stay for a chance to roam the land. Times where I could just wander were few and far between since I’d gotten sick. The chance of being out in the woods and having a bad fainting spell was too risky. You could end up seizing if you didn’t fall just right. Luckily, the orchard wasn’t too far, but getting there was always a trip that you had to respect. It was dangerous terrain. Since the spells started, Ma hadn’t wanted me going that far out, but this was day four in a streak of no fainting attacks. She must have had some kind of hope, or she would have told me to wait for her to come home so we could go water them together.
The last trip I took to the river birch, I snuck out our camera to take pictures of the flora and fauna. Between the most beautiful flowers you could find the deadliest of things. Last week, it was a rattler perched in a patch of lilies.
Before leaving, I skimmed through The Odyssey. I know Ma said I didn’t have to keep reading it, but her words got me wondering. Of course, she’d been right. I did appreciate the cyclopes more this time. Ma was always right. It drove me a little crazy but made for some sound advice.
After finishing my reading for the day, I descended, a bulk of water canteens slung around my arms. Eight jugs for the trees. One for me. The path to the orchard was long, twisty, and confusing if you didn’t know the property. But, we’d been living there our whole lives. Same as my mama’s ma, and her ma before her. For me, it was nothing. This was the air I grew up breathing. The trees I grew up climbing. The tilted rocks that I scraped my knees on and the river I’d caught my first crawdaddy in. So for me, this Southern jungle was nothing.

Author Highlight: Interview With Charlie Cochet
OMG! I’ve always wanted to interview Charlie Cochet. And I did!
A.O. Chika: Congrats on the Success of THIRDS series, I read a fanfic of it on A03 and decided to get the first two books in the series. Congrats again, on the release of your audiobooks and translations… You’re one of the first authors I know that has a Korean light novel.
As an aspiring author, I look up to you and hope to one day be as successful as you are.
The interview will cover two parts: the business part which focuses on you as an author and a businesswoman, and the LGBT part which focuses on your thoughts concerning issues the LGBT community is facing.

BUSINESS
Q: You write exclusively gay romance, what made you choose that category instead of mainstream romance?
I have been reading and writing romance since I can remember, but it was only until a few years ago that I decided I wanted to do more, and began writing with the intention of getting published. I started out writing mainstream romance and still hope to one day publish that book that started it all, but as I was writing that book, I had an LGBT character that slowly started taking over the book, and I had to take a step back and figure out why. I started to do some research, and that’s when I realized there was a whole genre of gay romance I hadn’t even known existed. The more I read, the more I fell in love with the stories. I connected with them on so many levels, and that’s when I started to write my first gay romance The Auspicious Troubles of Chance.
Q: THIRDS is a large series, the Worldbuilding and characters are massive and diverse. How did you create such an Immersive series? What gave you the idea and motivated you to keep at it?
When I was first published, I wrote mainly historical romance in the twenties and thirties, my favorite eras, but then I wrote a shifter story for the M/M romance Group’s Don’t Read in the Closet event. I had so much fun with that story that not only did it become a series, but I decided I wanted to write another shifter series. But I wanted it to be different from what was out there. I’m a big movie nerd, and I love action and suspense. I decided to write the kind of series I wanted to read, a kind of big nerdy action-packed movie/TV series with lots of characters who readers could fall in love with and have their favorites. I wanted it to be fun, a huge world that readers could get lost in for a while.
At the time there’s been a lot of wolf shifters, but not a whole lot of big cat shifters. I then thought about the world these shifters would live in and asked myself “What would happen if shifters were a part of society? How would the world change?” Those questions had a snowball effect, and it lead to the creation of the THIRDS world. I knew I wanted the series to have a foundation of the real world with one twist: shifters and humans coexisting.
What kept me motivated was the characters and the world. I was having so much fun. Dex was unlike any character I had written, and I just had to see what he’d do next.
Q: This is a cliché question, but I have to ask, Who is your favorite author? What’s your favorite book(s)? Mine is Nora Sakavic’s All for the Game Trilogy
That’s a very difficult question. I have lots of favorite authors and books across many genres, and sub genres. I love talking books, and am always happy to share my favorites. There are many.
Q: What book or series was the toughest to write?
Each book in the THIRDS series has been tough to write. With a series this long, there’s always the danger and fear that it will fizzle, and no one wants that for their series. I certainly didn’t want that for my boys. I wanted each book to be better than the one before it. I wanted to end the series with a bang. It’s especially hard when it’s a much anticipated pairing because there’s a lot of pressure, and you know you won’t be able to please anyone, so all you can do is write the best book you can. Some of the more emotional books to write were Smoke & Mirrors, Darkest Hour Before Dawn, and the final book in the series, Tried & True.
Q: How do you handle negative reviews?
I’d be lying if I said negative reviews aren’t tough, because so much of yourself goes into your books, but I’ve learned to separate the personal opinions from the constructive criticism. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, and you’ll never be able to please everyone. Sometimes you have people who don’t care about hurting others, but I’ve learned to look past all that. I love hearing when readers enjoy a book, but I also pay attention to the constructive criticism, because if the same point keeps coming up in several reviews, then you know something is wrong, and then you can learn from that and improve on it. Writing is a craft you need to keep working at, and as an author I want to continue to grow and improve.
Q: You’d probably answer that all of your books are your favorite, but which of your books would you say is your favorite and why?
I’ll probably go with Hell & High Water because that’s the book that started it all. It was the beginning of an incredible journey for me, and thanks to that book I’ve met so many amazing folks, many of who are now some of my closest friends.
Q: You’ve written a lot of books, I’m SOOOO envious. How did you get into writing and publishing your books? What motivates you to continue writing?
I’ve been writing since I was very young. When I was a kid I used to make up my own stories and draw pictures to go with them. I wrote my first novel in high school, and continued wanting to tell stories. I’ve been reading romance since I was very young. I always loved writing, I just never imagined it was something I could do for a living. What motivates me is the characters and the stories. I start to develop these characters and lives, and it’s so exciting! I love being able to create these worlds.
Q: So, this is probably a weird question, but where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully, I will have grown even more as an author. I would love to make the New York Times Best Sellers List with one of my gay romances. That would be amazing. Really though, I just see myself writing, hopefully growing my audience, and continuing to tell new and exciting stories.
Q: What’s a day in the life of a successful author like? Lemme guess, weekly books and coffee parties

Author Highlight: Interview With Hildred Billings
[image error]
Q: Hi Hildred, I just want to say that I loved Kiss and Tell. What gave you the idea for the book?
Hi! Thanks for having me and saying how much you loved that particular book. I honestly don’t remember what gave me the idea for even most of the books I’ve written. I’m one of those obnoxious writers who will pick up groceries from the store and have a brand new story plotted out by the time she makes it through the check stand.
But one thing I have been challenging myself with is taking old and true tropes from typical M/F romances and seeing how they translate in the lesbian romance world. The whole “hire a fake girlfriend for a function! Whoops! They’re actually in love!” trope is one of my favorites. I mostly love enemies/friends to lovers and forced proximity tropes the most, although I don’t always write them.
Q: You write a lot of books with Cynthia Dane, I was surprised when you mentioned that you and Cynthia are the same. What made you choose to write with a pen name (or two?)
Yes, most people don’t know that Cynthia is me and I am Cynthia. But it’s not a secret. It always makes me laugh to have readers ask me how we work together so well. I mostly just reply, “We spend a lot of time together.”
People also always ask how this whole co-authoring with myself thing began, but it’s not that uncommon in the writing world. Lots of us have multiple pen names for different reasons. The most common explanation is that sometimes we want to write completely different things while keeping branding integrity intact.
I started publishing under my own name five years ago. Hildred (here I am, talking in the third person!) mostly writes lesbian romances but also fantasy. I’ve decided that my main brand under Hildred going forward will be main female characters who happen to be LGBT. However, especially five years ago, there was little money to be made in F/F fiction, and I needed this to be my day job. So in 2014, I launched Cynthia Dane as an M/F billionaire romance author, and “she” made me enough money to allow me to keep publishing lesbian romances on the side under Hildred!
Flash forward two years, and I can’t help being myself. Throughout Cynthia’s stories were these characters Eva and Nadia, and they were having massive lesbian drama in the background. I actually had some readers ask me if they were going to get a resolution to their cat and mouse games! I decided to write their story, but wanted some way to differentiate a lesbian romance from my usual M/F romances that I had hinged my brand on. So, I brought in Hildred, the lesbian romance brand.
Long story short (too late,) Hard to Get took off and paid my bills for months. I decided to write more under that partnership, and now the co-authorship is the crux of my marketing plan, if you can believe it!
(Fun fact: Cynthia wasn’t my first pen name. I have another, now defunct, lesbian erotica pen name that lasted from 2013-2016.)
Q: As a successful author and businesswoman would you say writing in the LGBT category was a good decision or are there any negatives to writing in two different categories?
I don’t think there are any negatives to writing in two categories. Lots of authors spread themselves around like butter in the writing world, because after a while you get bored of writing Yet Another Billionaire Romance (no matter how much you shake them up) or, dare I say, Yet Another Lesbian Angst-Fest. It’s good to have different genres to go between to keep creativity as fresh as possible.
I do think, however, it’s important to separate “LGBT” when talking about book marketing and profitability. The F/F world is extremely different from M/M. Gay Romance is a world I’m not familiar with other than “It can make you pretty good money.” F/F, on the other hand, has a cynical history of being the stepchild in that it doesn’t make hardly any money unless you got at it “hard.” This has definitely changed in the past few years. 3-5 years ago, I didn’t have a hope in hell of making enough money to pay my bills writing F/F. Now, however, the audience is slowly growing and I think that if you have a love for the genre, then it’s not a bad time to try it out. However, it’s definitely not a “get rich quick” genre, and I think most of its readers are happy about that.
The one thing I will say about the lovely F/F readers is that they are loyal. I tell fledgling F/F authors that if they can grow their loyal audience, then they’ll be okay. Because lesbian romance readers will follow you wherever you go, if possible, and that is NOT something I could say about other genres I’ve written in.
Q: What made you decide to create your own publishing company – Barachou Press?
This was my full-time job from the beginning, even when I barely made enough money to pay for stock photo costs, let alone the $50 needed to get a DBA in my state. (My DBA is Barachou Press.)
When I came back from teaching English in Japan, I couldn’t get a job here in the States, but my student loans were about to come knocking on my door. Around that time I heard about KDP and decided what the hell? What do I have to lose? It’s always been my dream job to be a full-time author, and being indie means I get to make all the decisions, both good and bad. The kind of books I love to write is not the kind publishers salivate to have.
Another fun fact: Barachou is a portmanteau of two Japanese words, bara (rose) and chou (butterfly.) They represent the two major symbols used throughout my fantasy series, because at the time I thought I would debut as a fantasy writer. Whoops. I’m only getting around to that now.
Q: This is a cliche question, but I have to ask, Who is your favorite author? What’s your favorite book(s)? Mine is Nora Sakavic’s All for the Game Trilogy
I don’t really have a single favorite author, and I don’t have a favorite book. It all changes from month to month. But the authors I keep going back to are Amy Tan, Jacqueline Carey, and Sylvia Day. Right now I’m really big on Kevin Kwan and his Crazy Rich Asians series. (The second book is better (cough))
Q: What book or series was the toughest to write?
Out of my coauthored books, Hard to Get seriously had me pulling my hair out at times. I had to take actual passages and quotes from other Cynthia Dane books to recreate their timeline. It was fun at first, but by the end, I was happy to just publish it and forget about it forever! (Uh oh, it took off in success. Whoops. That’s how it goes every time.)
Q: How do you handle negative reviews?
I don’t read them. Seriously. I glance through a new release’s reviews on Amazon for the first couple of weeks to get a feel for the general reaction of my biggest fans, and by then I’ve moved on to my next writing project. Sometimes I have to go to the page and see I’ve been dinged (especially after a big promotion) but I don’t read them at that point. I feel that the reviews are more for the readers and helping them find things they want to read. I take everything with a grain of salt.
Q: You’d probably answer that all of your books are your favorite, but which of your books would you say is your favorite and why?
Honestly, by the end of most of the books I write, I’m content to ship them off to boarding school and only see them at Christmas for the rest of my life. I have a very mama bird investment in that I’ll sit on them for a few weeks and then kick them out of the nest forever. Bye! You have to get brutal with your books when you write like I do.
But I do have my absolute favorite books, yes. I think the best book I’ve written yet is Love, Yumi under Hildred. Under Cynthia, it would be Dom Vs. Domme. I did very different things style and plotwise with both, and I was so into writing them that I recall it being like a fever dream. (Sidenote for Cynthia fans: Kathryn and Ian will finally be getting married in 2018! I, uh, hope?)
Q: You’ve written a lot of books, I’m SOOOO envious, How did you get into writing and publishing your books?
I’ve been writing since I was a little kid. I wrote my first full-length novel at 11. It wasn’t good, of course, but I spent most of my teen years hashing out my style, voice, and “getting the crap out” as I put it. I started doing NaNoWriMo in college and it really helped to build up my writer’s muscle.
I’m meant to be an author. I knew my calling in life when I was a kid, and while my parents and teachers encouraged me to explore writing, they made it clear it was not a full-time career and I needed a backup plan. Well, I never did have a backup plan. So, here I am! Making it work! (Take that, student adviser!)
Q: What is your writing process like?
I write and publish quickly, both because I can and because it’s a requirement of making it in this business. I’m lucky that I don’t need outlines (I always go off-grid anyway when I try to use them) and I can write about 5,000-10,000 words a day, depending. Like I said, once you flex your writer’s muscle, you can get a lot done!
I start with a loose idea of where I want the plot to go and what kind of characters I’m working with. Usually about halfway through I know exactly where we’re going and follow through to the end. Then we edit. Somewhere in there, my designer gets my cover to me (or I already had it) and we publish. I don’t know when I’m going to announce my release date until we start the final proofread, and then it’s about a week away – so my readers get a nice surprise, and my ARC readers start juggling their schedules

Review:
This was an... interesting book. I thought the ending was abrupt but it was pretty interesting.
So here's the gist of it:
Danton is a vampire with a shitty past, like for real his tragic backstory. You know those memes that say "You need to be a level 30 to unlock my backstory" Danton's backstory is one no one should ever unlock.
Not only did his first lover die from HIV, and he had to mercy kill him. He was captured and tortured by the church. When I saw torture, I mean 'silver in the eye to prevent him from healing' torture. So now he's a blind vampire, who write gay romance novel.
What sucked (and is simultaneously funny) is that he has not had sex or experienced any kind of passion for years, and his gay romance novel reads like a biology textbook. His romance reads like the note of a student cramming for a practical biology exam. It was so clinical!
His agent decides to hire someone to bring some passion into his life, he does several interviews until he finds Kevin. Their interview starts out awkward and Danton tells Kevin a bit of his tragic as hell backstory. Kevin doesn't believe because well... blind vampires. Which is totally understandable.
I loved how Danton was a bit bitter, it wasn't very obvious but the way he viewed humans was a bit sad. He was so joyless until Kevin took him to the gay club. I love how the author - Mark Lesney put a spin on the whole newly turned vampire biting a human without making them bleed out. Because think about it- if you suddenly needed to drink blood to survive, would you know where to bite, what vein to aim for etc. I also liked how the whole licking the bitten area, to mysteriously heal it was debunked. I love the realism the story contained.
What I didn't like was the LOOOOONG backstory, I would have done without the 2-3 page detail on what was done to Danton, Like seriously that shit was messed up and sad. I enjoy angst but this was way outta my comfort zone.
Back to Danton and Kevin. I loved how after Kevin suspended his doubt about Danton, he relaxed a bit and took Danton on a night he would never forget. Like seriously neither of them would ever forget that night. Who would forget a vampire using your body to see (It sounds freaky and believe me it is, I just don't know how to explain it)
Kevin wasn't perfect, he had his own flaws, but I liked the chemistry they had.
I still think the ending was rushed though.

Damn Danson writes gay sex scenes like a biology textbook
Interesting spin on Vampire x Human romance. I loved how the author tried to make vampires a bit more realistic. none of that burning in the sun business.

Book Review: Love By Number by D.J. Jamison
Blurb:
Aidan doesn’t have the best record with relationships, but he’s had a lifelong love affair with baseball. Player stats and computer simulations make sense. People don’t. But when he needs a ride to the World Series, he must rely on another person: a sexy artist who is as spontaneous as Aidan is predictable.
Jesse doesn’t care about baseball. As an artist, he’d rather paint a player than watch him at bat. But his grandpa loves the Kansas City Royals, so he takes him to every home game. He has no idea a fender bender in the parking lot is about to deliver new inspiration in the shape of a man with a whole bag of quirks.
Despite their differences, Jesse and Aidan hit it off, and their sexual chemistry is fantastic. But when Aidan’s numbers betray him, Jesse isn’t prepared for the fall-out. If Aidan continues to put his passion for baseball stats above everything else, he could miss out on the most important numbers in life: the number of smiles, kisses and laughs they could share in a journey of a lifetime.

Review:
I read the blurb and expected an opposite attract romance, I got the opposite attract bit, but the "romance" bit had me thinking meh. I loved Jesse, he was a completely relatable character. Aiden, on the other hand, had me raising my eyebrows.
The author pointed out MANY times, that Aiden was different, I got it because yeah he is a bit different and his past experiences, especially with love, has been shitty. That still didn't give him the right to be a shitty block of ice to Jesse, like seriously dude please stop using your difference as an excuse to be a douche canoe. Like for real, halfway through the book, I was like "Lord gimme strength, else I smack this child"
I was happy when Aiden began to see my point and tried to make things better.
Jesse wasn't perfect either, he is a relatable character so it was easy to pick apart his flaws, for one he gives up too easily, he is one of those "bang em and leave em" types who only sleeps with a person twice, I swear those types think sleeping with someone twice must mean that person is the one (Sadly I have friends like this to back up this claim... I need to reevaluate my life choices).
So yeah I rolled my eyes so hard when Jesse said he thought Aiden was special.
My character critic aside, I didn't feel any deep emotional connection between them, I felt like I was told they had feelings for each other bit never actually felt it. Nevertheless, I was happy when they finally talked things out.
The ending felt a bit rushed though. I give this 3 stars

Book Review: Speak with the Dead by Jacqueline Rohrbach
Blurb:
Clarence and Bryant thought an all expense trip to visit family in Wisconsin would offer a pleasant break from the doldrums of Arizona life. There was, however, a catch: Bryant’s sister bought a room where you could supposedly see and speak to the dead. Assuming the entire thing is a hoax—sea monkeys for rich people—Bryant and Clarence travel east on their family’s dime.
A surprise awaits them. The room works as advertised, allowing the human eye access to the spirit world, and the ghost inside has a thing or two to teach them about the afterlife.

Review:
The story premise is that rich people can buy and "install" ghosts in their house to show off. These ghosts can be harmless... until things begin to get funky and they're after your life.
The story starts with Betty Anne and her shitty ass husband - Mark, buying a ghost. The seller gives them clear instructions on what to do when the "harmless" ghost begin to show signs of being something else. Of course, this shitty couple ignores the advice because a dangerous ghost would make for a great story and would make their neighbors envious of them. Like seriously I've never met a couple so pretentious and irritating like this assholes. They have the survival instinct of a wet sponge!
Betty Anne invite's her brother Byrant and his husband Clarence to show off every expensive item they own including the ghost and badly cooked food. I'm going to pause here to add this "It doesn't matter how expensive a steak is, burnt undercooked and semi-raw steak is garbage."
I'm still trying to think of words to describe Betty Anne and Mark are so here's a from quote Attack Helicopter's Review
Betty Anne is a character you can easily love to hate. She has no spine, no interesting factors about herself or her life, and seems to think her life is better than everyone else's because she can afford more things. Unhappily married to Mark, one of the biggest dicks in the universe, they live happily with the ghost they bought - a young girl who died of cancer. Because who doesn't like seeing a dead child when eating dinner?
Bryant and Clarence aren't fond of this side of the family - not only for the homophobia they show towards the couple, but also because of all the cruel things they do to other people and even animals. Like I said, they were easy to hate!
I was so happy when Mark died, because God that asshole shouldn't have lived this long, he was a sexist, homophobic asshole with serious issues. I pictured him as a soggy bag of flour.
I was rooting for Byrant and Clarence the entire time and OMG Clarence grandma -Gammy is so badass. She is sweet, caring and protective of her family.
You can probably tell that I loved this book, it kept me hooked from the first page. God, I'm so happy those shitty assholes got what they deserved, I'm also sad that Byrant had such a terrible family, on the plus side he has Gammy ( ˘⌣˘)♡(˘⌣˘ )

Review:
I'm not the biggest fan of books with lots of sex scenes, so I was pretty surprised when I received an ARC. This is my third book by Annabeth and while I didn't finish reading it, it wasn't because the story wasn't compelling, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

There was so much sex going on, which makes sense because it's a BDSM erotica, I wish I knew that before requesting the book. Since I didn't finish reading it, I'll base my review on what I did read.
I loved Logan from the start, he was sweet, I loved how Annabeth didn't do with the usual big buff Dom and Small cute Sub stereotype. I was all for Dom Logan. Curtis, on the other hand, tested my patience. Damn this dude needs to calm his shit. I mean, I understand his grief, I could relate to him not wanting to get close to anyone after the death of his lover, but his grief and emotions were all over the place. One minute he was withdrawn, the next he was giving Logan mixed signals.
I loved how overprotective Logan's parents were, anyone with overprotective parents can relate to how embarrassing and somewhat irritating it is having parents who think you don't know what you want.
My main problem with books with so much sex scenes is not the sex, but the fact that it takes up the space for plot and such the emotional connection is compromised and paper thin.
I couldn't feel any emotional connection between Logan and Curtis other than lust, this made it hard for me to read the sex scenes and I ended up skipping pages until I couldn't follow the storyline. I stopped after Curtis hurt his leg and Logan had to help him with his word carving competition thingy.

Summary
If you're into BDSM erotica books you'd love this. I'll only read this sort of book if the chemistry between the characters is more than just about sex. I need to feel the emotional connection between them. I didn't find that so I stopped reading half way.

Review:
I LOVED THIS BOOK! so much I contacted Hildred Billings for an exclusive interview \( ̄▽ ̄)/
Victoria's girlfriend of five years Anna, leaves her for a woman in an RV just weeks to Victoria's book tour promoting her book on how to maintain a healthy long-term relationship... talk about irony.
I was a bit unhappy that Anna, planned on leaving without saying anything to Vic, like Vic only realized Anna was leaving her when she came home early to find Anna and her new girlfriend moving her stuff. That was so mean!
Since half the reason Vic's book sold out was that people wanted to meet her long-term girlfriend, Vic needs someone to pretend to be her girlfriend hence hiring an escort.
After Madison's client cancels their arrangement to move to who knows where, Madison needs money to maintain her lifestyle and get IRS off her case. She needs a client... any client.
So when she gets a call from her "boss" telling her she has a client -Victor Nicholson- and all she has to do is pretend to be Victor's girlfriend for a book tour, one that'll let her travel to Paris in a private plane, she agrees!
The problem is Victor makes it clear sex is not on the table, which doesn't help Madison because she needs cash and if she can just get him to pay for some "extras" then she can make some money to maintain her lifesyle and maybe get IRS to give her some breathing space. So she decides to seduce the hell out of this guy, it shouldn't be so difficult as most men would kill to have her in their beds.
Imagine her shock when she discovers that Victor Nicholson is Victoria Nicholson.
I laughed at this, OMG she came prepared to seduce a guy and now she has no idea what to do. I mean sure she tries but Vic keeps rebuffing her attempts. Which frustrates her because she knows Vic is attracted to her.
As the story progresses, they get close and Madison's seduction finally pays off, except this time, her heart goes with her and sex with Vic isn't just sex.
The sex scenes were steamy, I'm asexual but damn it got me wondering what it was like to go down on a woman. I was angry when Anna came back because What the heck! you don't get to leave after a 5-year relationship without saying anything, and then you come back and try to push the blame on your partner. If she wasn't comfortable or she wanted more, all she had to do was talk not try to run away with another woman!
Anyway, buy this book, you'll love it!

How to Domesticate a Russian bear
(A Russian Bear III)
CB Conwy
So, all Mischa really wanted was sex. Hot, kinky sex, and preferably lots of it.
But then he got a sub, and then the sub turned into a fiancé, and now apparently Mischa is supposed to settle down and be all domesticated. However, Mischa does not do tame.
Well, at least he didn’t use to. Now he’s beginning to think that yes, he does indeed do tame. Unfortunately, his sub doesn’t seem to get that.
Tom knew that Mischa was a handful. Hell, that’s basically what made Tom fall head over heals for him. But figuring out how to handle his postgraduate studies combined with a long-distance relationship is driving him nuts. And not in the great, Mischa-is-torturing-me-with-kinky-sex-toys way (even though that happens, too. A lot). More like in the this-is-killing-me-slowly-and-I-don’t-know-what-to-do-about-it way. Unfortunately, Mischa finds out and puts his foot down, and then suddenly Tom has some very hard choices to make.
Then there’s Mischa’s busybody bridezilla friend, karate practice with people who actually hit back, and the arrival of the in-laws. Because just what do you do with the finest privately owned dungeon in North America when your family turns up?
That’s when Tom realizes that domesticating a Russian bear may take more work than even he realized.
Warning: An unrepentantly grumpy Dom with an unrepentantly pain-loving sub, kink so hot that the reader will be in imminent danger of blushing, and two characters who do their very best to turn a perfectly nice romance into a porn movie every chance they get.
Excerpt
Tom was using all his willpower to keep his steps calm and measured as the cab drove off behind him; desperation was never a pretty sight, even though he most of all wanted to sprint up the driveway stretching in front of him.
Finally, he stood in front of the door. He took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, and reached up to knock at the door.
Before his hand made contact with the dark wood, the door was flung open and he was pulled into an embrace so tight that he couldn’t breathe. For a moment, he was shocked; then his brain registered the scent of Mischa, and Mischa’s arms around him, and he gave up on any pretense of being stoic and mature and simply clung, breathing in deeply and finally, finally indulging in the feeling of being back in Mischa’s arms.
He’d envisioned this meeting pretty much every single day since they’d parted. He’d pictured Mischa kissing him, Mischa having kinky plans that started right on the doorstep, Mischa bossing him around.
He hadn’t imagined this desperate clinging. Mischa held on so tightly that it felt like Mischa’s arms and Mischa’s body were his entire world.
He hadn’t imagined, either, the way Mischa was hiding his head against Tom’s shoulder, and he certainly hadn’t imagined the labored breaths that sounded suspiciously moist. Tom gently let one hand slide through Mischa’s dark hair, rubbing softly, comforting.
“Hey, hey,” he whispered. “It’s okay. We’re okay now.”
Then he realized why he was whispering and pulled a little harder on Mischa’s hair. “But you could consider letting me breathe sometime soon. It would probably be good for my health.”
Mischa mumbled something, and his arms loosened slightly.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that?” Tom said, gently massaging Mischa’s neck.
Mischa finally lifted his head. His eyes were somewhat shiny, and Tom would bet that his shirt would be slightly damp where Mischa’s face had been. “I said, ‘you sarcastic little shit’.”
Tom barked out a laugh. “Jesus, Mischa, you’re such an asshole. I had completely forgotten…” But then Mischa’s lips were on his, and any coherent thought promptly left his head.
He had imagined this meeting over and over. How kinky it would be. How forceful Mischa would be. However, Tom couldn’t, not in any way, have imagined this kiss.
Mischa’s lips were soft, almost searching at the beginning, the tip of his tongue gliding gently over Tom’s lower lip. Then, when Tom eagerly opened up – it was Mischa! – he embraced Tom tightly and took his mouth so thoroughly that Tom could do nothing but surrender to the feeling of finally, finally being this close to Mischa again.
He might have made a needy sound. He did know that he wasn’t just clinging anymore, he was crawling up Mischa until his legs were around Mischa’s body and Mischa was holding him tightly. They were moving, he thought, but he was tasting Mischa, surrendering to his tongue, opening his mouth to let Mischa plunder it, however, Mischa wanted to take him.
Then they were sitting somewhere, on a couch, Tom thought, and Mischa pulled back slightly, gently holding Tom’s head in his hands. “I’ve missed you,” he said, his voice sounding slightly gruff.
“I’ve missed you, too. God, Mischa, what were we thinking with the whole ‘Tom’s got to settle in so Mischa can’t visit’ thing? That was really, really stupid!”
Mischa nodded sagely. “It was stupid. Very.” Then he bent forward and kissed Tom again. Their lips met, and their tongues slowly explored what they hadn’t had for so long: The intimacy of two bodies being close, two breaths mingling and getting heavier, then slowing down when one of them pulled back. Mischa gently kissed Tom’s forehead at one point, and Tom closed his eyes, suddenly overwhelmed with the feeling of being cherished like this. Then Mischa’s lips were on his again, gently teasing the tender flesh, and Tom shuddered as his body responded to the slight soreness of his bitten and overused lips. He briefly registered Mischa’s grin; then he was being lowered onto the couch, and finally they were lying next to each other, stretched out and able to let their hands rove as much as they wanted.
In the beginning, it was light, almost like exploring someone you didn’t know for the first time. Then their bodies seemed to recognize the feeling of each other, and impatience took over. Mischa none too gently opened Tom’s pants, and then his hands were finally on Tom.
Tom gasped into their kiss, and he could sense Mischa’s breathing quickening as well as the grip on Tom’s dick tightening. Whimpering, Tom fumbled with the opening of Mischa’s slacks, determined to have Mischa right there with him. It seemed to take forever, maybe because Mischa’s lips never left his, but then he finally held Mischa’s cock in his hand.
Mischa rewarded him with a groan and a firm stroke all the way from the root of his dick to the tip, the precome making everything slick.
It was so easy after that. Their lips met where they breathed each other in, Tom whimpering every time Mischa rubbed the sensitive head of his dick, Mischa growling when Tom sped up, demanding that Mischa be right next to him in his pleasure.
It was impossible to say how long it lasted, but the wave came inexorably, pulling them with it and crashing over them, making Tom shout in pleasure and joy and Mischa groaning, sounding almost pained, his teeth deep in Tom’s shoulder as they came together.
***
“Did you actually bite me?” Tom’s voice was surprisingly mellow for someone asking that question. Mischa only grumbled and pulled him closer. He had managed to locate a blanket on the back of the couch, and now they were snug and warm and, most importantly, as close to each other as they could possibly get. He had no intention of moving for the foreseeable future.
Maybe forever, really. He stretched languidly, keeping a firm hold of Tom while doing so.
He felt more than heard the drowsy chuckle against his chest. “You’re not going to let me go anytime soon, are you?” Tom didn’t sound terribly upset about that fact.
“I will if you keep up that racket,” Mischa muttered. God, he felt good. He had completely forgotten how it felt being like this, all fucked out with a sweet boy in his arms. He stubbornly ignored the fact that it had been a very long time since he had had any boy but Tom, and that he’d never really bothered to hold those boys, sweet or not. If being a badass Dom took a bit of self-delusion, he was all for it. Reputations had to be upheld, if only in your mind. He smirked.
“Are you making plans to take over the world again?” Tom raised his head and looked down at Mischa, expression half suspicious, half blissfully satisfied. He had a tuft of hair sticking up in front, and the general impression was one of a mussed and very happy man. Thoroughly mauled, in other words.
Okay, not as thoroughly mauled as he would be later, but still, Mischa considered it a job very well done.
“You are, aren’t you? You’re not listening at all.”
“I most certainly am making plans,” Mischa answered haughtily. Or, well, he aimed for haughty. His yawn might have ruined the impression somewhat.
At least it must have to Tom. He got this soft expression on his face, reaching down and gently moving a lock of Mischa’s hair away from his forehead.
“What do you say we postpone the ‘hanging Tom from the ceiling and torturing him’ scene and spend the evening on the couch? We could get some take-out.”
“I don’t hang you from the ceiling,” Mischa said, letting his hand slide lightly on Tom’s side.
“No, because you think that ropes are boring. Hey, should I worry about the fact that neither of us is protesting the torture part?”
“No, because I’m very good at torturing you,” Mischa said. In his opinion, a pretty good comeback. Unfortunately, his stomach chose that moment to make known that he had only had two bites of a decidedly sad airplane sandwich since this morning, and rumbled loudly.
“That settles it. There’s no way I’m having you starve to death before you torture me. After, sure, but I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for ages. Besides, bodies would be really hard to hide in this neighborhood.”
Mischa did try to smack his butt, but Tom was surprisingly quick for somebody being all mellowed out from sex. Or maybe Mischa didn’t try too hard.
Which was fully rewarded for the rest of the evening. They put on a film that they watched pretty much nothing of, stuffed themselves with Chinese food, and did something that was questionably close to snuggling for Mischa’s taste. Just to make up for it, he did make Tom scream before they went to bed. That boy really liked a blowjob.

Meet the Author
Doing relatively sane and responsible things during the day, I’m always looking forward to coming home to see what my characters have been up to. It’s only very rarely what I want them to do, but there you go. I have no problems whatsoever reading both Flaubert and smut (although not at the same time), and the only thing I like more than chocolate is a good comfort read. To me, the best thing about writing is the rush; it’s almost a physical high when you’re writing and it’s going well. As for the worst part: Nobody ever told me that fictional characters do exactly as they please! All that talk about ‘the author’s intention’? This author is running around, desperately trying to figure out what my heroes want to do and then coaxing everybody into something vaguely resembling a consistent plot. Sigh.
