The Fallen Chronicles: Dark Angel

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wondered what makes the bad guy bad. I’m also interested in cause and effect, how our actions ripple out and change the world we live in. So, when I decided to write Dark Angel I wanted to fall in love with an anti-hero. Angels are generally portrayed as perfect beacons of goodness and hope – so why not tell a story about the ultimate angel of darkness – Lucifer Morningstar.
When you look at why Luc fell his reasoning is pretty relatable (in my version at any rate!) – jealousy, hubris, and immaturity…I think we’ve all been there at some point…minus the world changing apocalyptic effects! Given the right motivation and circumstance, can he grab what’s left of the light inside him and make the right choice?
I love flawed characters – where you can really see two sides of the same coin. Lucifer was an easy choice for me – his dual nature is even present in his name – Morningstar. Here we have the darkest fallen angel paired with the brightest of stars in the sky (well, brightest planet I guess). Darkness and light existing in the same space. At the end of the day I wanted to find out if it was possible to hate the things Luc had done without hating the man.
Throughout the course of this series we will definitely see some traditionally pure angels, and some avenging angels, but they all have a story to tell. Love is a powerful force that has the ability to both motivate and destroy. This little crew of fallen angels have gone through the ringer (Bataryal’s story is up next in Broken Angel) and everyone will have to face their past and come to terms with who and what they’re becoming.
In everyone’s life change is inevitable, and there are always opportunities to make different choices. In the end is there really pure goodness or pure evil, or are we all just operating in shades of gray?
