On the subject of smoke and lazers — if you have a chance to see Fever Ray perform live you should do it, I think. Especially if the tickets come free of charge thanks to someone pretending to be someone else. On stage they're costumed and there is so much smoke, and the lazers are amazingly programmed. And oh jesus how did I forget, the stage is crowded with these old timey lamps with decorative bell- or pear-shaped lampshades, and they're all timed, like the lazers, run by some computer...

"Xanadu" (abbreviated)

Before tonight, the best three-piece live performance i had seen happened on 7 November, 1991. And it was Rush, so three heroic Canadians so long as we're not counting the CG skeleton that mouthed the "Jack, relax…" portions on the jumboscreen during the title track. Or the fucking lazers and smoke. Or Geddy Lee's thousand toms. Three men and six million Missourians at least, plus all of our cars.

But then tonight i go and see Death perform at the Bottle, and when they were three they were...

Streamer

Swallowing eggs and farmer's' market overpriced bread (I swear not only did the price go up but the loaf got smaller) as we speak, preparing to hope into the car and drive to Iowa City. Very very grateful to have a chance to read at the beloved Prairie Lights Books tonight at 7:00. Anyone interested is invited to stream the reading live, either by navigating through the previous link and its advice, or (I think?) by going directly here, but only when the hour comes. So, not before. Too long a...

Logan Square

Evening.

You know, I don't mean to be rude.

It's okay. That happens to me all the time.

Yeah I think they probably put the fence there because they don't want your dog peeing on the grass.

If that's what they want they should get a much taller fence. The dog stepped right over it.

That's why it's rude. What you're doing is rude.

What I'm doing? Standing here? I was standing here and said hello and you said you didn't want to be rude.

You're letting him pee.

She's done now. All done.

Have a little...

Captain Booyah

And so, the Beauty and the Beast episodes of Epicly Later'd come to an end, the SAIC school year comes to a start. I've completely forgotten how to ride a skateboard but remembered how to ride my bike. Call it a draw.

But! Happy to share my participation in two very different but coincidentally great goings on. First is the Texas Book Festival, where my little name finds itself (quiet and big-eyed) among an outrageous list of known important impressive names. It's going to be an Austin...

Twaddling and Bloggery

Mighty pleased to be part of September's Hobart, for which Jensen Whelan read my little book then emailed me questions. To introduce the interview, Jensen says:

The Slide is the kind of first novel that makes you happy for the presence of books in the world. It's weird and wild and hilarious and touching all at once.

It's a hell of a nice discussion about  Zelda, fractals, THE INTERNET, satire, sadness, the loaded and self-serving way some people speak of traditional vs. experimental narratives, a

Apology for Idling

I've a couple promising readings lined up this month. The first aligns me yet again with a featherproofy bunch of good people, including Brian Costello himself, who'll be hosting his Second City, Third Person reading on Saturday September 12 at The Book Cellar. I'll read a new short story. Completing the four-cornered ass kick word robot attack robot killing machine are Zach Dodson / Plague and Alexis Thomas. The night starts at 7:00 and it will slay.

Then, on September 21, I'm stupidly honored t

Standing and Clapping

Following yesterday's panel discussion on the branding and promise of the St. Louis region, today's St. Louis Beacon delivers this excellent Bob Duffy article framing the issue in terms of St. Louis Hooray!

I'm frankly flattered. I'm honored to have my little work even mentioned in reference to the three panelists: Roger Beachy of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center (pops), Bill DeWitt, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Fred Bronstein, president of the St. Louis Symphony Society.

Urbane Outfit

By my calculations, exactly two good things have ever been sold at Urban Outfitters, and neither are made by Altamont. The first is Penguin's collected deluxe tales of Hans Christian Andersen, with cover art by Anders Nilsen. The second is this anime-themed pillow that doubles as a shower curtain and triples as a plug-and-play Arcanoid machine for your black leggings. No! Actually! It's that Banksy book everyone either owns or has given as a gift.

Today, my first day of life as a thirty-one year
