You Want To Write What? Including The Taboo In Your Stories
Great writing advice from Allison Maruska

How creative are your dreams?
The New Year is well and truly here, and it’s time to get our writing goals in place.
My own goals?
I’m planning on finishing my current novel. It’s a little bit different from my previous writing endeavors – its a contemporary novel set in southern England.
I’m going to keep updating and posting on this blog. I love how we are able to share our thoughts, ideas, and creativity through this medium. Looking forward to posting more here.
I am applying to do a Masters degree in Writing and Literature. I’ve given myself some time to think about this, but as a means of getting feedback on my writing, I think it’ll be both rewarding and inspiring. I’m waiting for acceptance, so will keep you posted on that result….
I also have a second book in the pipeline, that follows on from my Stella Windermere series of mysteries. The books involve a quirky, retired amateur sleuth and her trusty side kick Joe. They are set in my hometown in south Wales. I’m excited to write and publish my next book and to revisit the character of Stella.

So, I’ve been thinking about – where we actually get our creativity? Is it in our dreams? Or our daydreams?
The American Gothic writer Edgar Allen Poe, once said:
“Those who dream by day are cognisant of many things which escape those who dream at night.”
Are our daydreams more powerful than our dreams? Some people delve deep into their daydreams, into their subconscious mind, to make wonderful creative discoveries. Someone once told me that Agatha Christie weaved her plot lines whilst sitting in her bath. Its a means of free thinking, opening your mind to new possibilities, and scenarios in your creativity. The words ‘What if?’ can be an excellent writing tool to allow endless possibilities. Virginia Woolf famously used her dreams to write her ‘stream of conscious’ novels in this way. I like to take my dog out on long walks.
Woolf tells us that:
“It is in our idleness, in our dreams that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.”
I love her nod to the Truth, for that is at the heart of any writer….’Write what you know’ they tell us, and we should. For human emotions, love, hope, faith, revenge, are what connects us all, and should be displayed in our writing.
“And the Truth shall set you free!” – Comedian Jim Carrey has said, and it is very true, for our fictional writing and for our own reality.
What do others think?
Please share!
Have a productive writing week, fellow bloggers!

Lewis Carroll’s Curious Square Poem
Love this poem, have to share!
The following is a curious “square poem” attributed to Lewis Carroll:
I often wondered when I cursed,
Often feared where I would be—
Wondered where she’d yield her love,
When I yield, so will she.
I would her will be pitied!
Cursed be love! She pitied me …

5 Essential Lessons I Learned as an Author in 2017
Great advice here from https://jocelynyoung.com
Pushkin Press Is Open For Children’s Book Submissions For One Day!
For all you budding children’s writers out there!
Pushkin Press, a UK publisher, “was founded in 1997, and publishes novels, essays, memoirs, children’s books—everything from timeless classics to the urgent and contemporary.”
One of their “editors-at-large,” Sarah Odedina, is opening up her email for children’s books submissions for one day, Monday, January 8th.
I couldn’t find what they define as “children’s” books but last years pick was a YA novel, so she must be looking for books, including YA. And Sarah’s bio states that one of the types of books she likes to read is board books. So there you have it. Come to your own conclusions.
So pull that synopsis out, your bio, and send your first 10,000 words of your children’s book along to Odedina, like I am!
Best of luck! And let me know how you fair!

After a few days off, I’m back with a little post!
Stephen King
The New Year is here, and how better to start than a post about Stephen King? Thanks to Erin Waldie Lifestyle blog for this, great post!
Quote Of The Day Facts:
Stephen King- The Shining
Published The Shining in 1977
King wrote The Shining during his stay at a historic hotel located in Colorado, after hearing ghost stories and hauntings he was inspired and put his pen to paper. I thought you might enjoy this interview from BBC NEWS interviewing Stephen King.
THOUGHTS:
A few years ago I took a Pop Literature class and we covered Stephen Kings, The Shining. It was one of those books I read with a flashlight but never really studied it in depth. It’s packed with great stuff and could talk for hours, since this is a quote of the day I’ll keep it on the short side. For those who have never read The Sining, you might be interested in hearing what Stephen King has to say about the horror genre. I always pull this novel…

Happy New Year – Hel Calennig
Happy new year! This blog comes from the sunny Gold Coast, Australia, but I havn’t always lived here. I was born and bred in Wales, a country that is deeply passionate about its ancient customs and rituals, and Christmas and New Year are no exception. Just like Scotland’s Hogmanny, Wales has Hel Calennig, which is celebrated on New Year’s Day.
The ancient custom of Calennig literally means a New Year gift. Children would go from house to house, bearing good wishes, health and prosperity to the household for the New Year. They would bear gifts such as pennies and skewered apples with fruit and raisins smeared over the apple.
I am aware of this Welsh tradition, taken from the Roman festivities of Saturnalia, but as children we were more concerned with trick or treating in my town. The capital city, Cardiff holds annual Calennig celebrations, which includes fairground rides, fireworks displays and ice skating.
I hope everyone has their New Year resolutions in place….mine are to be healthier, to read more, and of course, to write!
I am currently writing my next book, a thriller set in southern England. I’ m also applying to do a Master’s degree in literature and writing, which is very exciting! I will keep you posted on how I go with that.
Happy new year, fellow bloggers – keep posting and writing!
