666 Flags Horror Anthology Fundraiser

Fellow writer C Derick Miller lost his job at 6 Flags in Texas earlier this year because of comments made by his fictional character in one of his books. Which was written under a pen name, years prior to this incident. If it can happen to him, it can happen to any of us. Some authors are standing up to fight against cancel culture and have donated stories to this fundraising anthology.

Buy a copy today, direct from this link and 100% of the funds go towards legal defense fund for indie horror creators. https://www.psychotoxin.com/product-page/666-flags-a-fundraising-anthology?fbclid=IwAR2igBH7DGcVCJOp1m9dFPiGt7UZwXA1Qiryk_ymFy5vOgBx7ugcMRh3CNg

OR buy from Amazon where they take a cut, then the remainder goes into the fund.

We live in a dangerous day and age when the overly vocal minority seem to have an unbalanced amount of power. Guilty people want to ban or burn books. People who want to keep the status quo want authors and artist punished for their creative vision. It is my pleasure to light the path and my honor to be associated with these gifted writers. 666 Flags: A Fundraising Anthology will be the first in what I hope to be a yearly fund raiser to create a legal defense fund to help protect indie writers from the censors and hate mongers. Every penny made will be donated to create this fund.

Kae Roscoe’s daughter went missing in the woods sixteen months ago but when she returns, she’s not the same person. There’s definitely something very different about Molly, and her reappearance is making strange things happen to everyone around her.

Let’s change it up and talk to Screenwriter, Director & Producer Jade Stone

Born and raised just outside of Toronto, Jade Stone (born Sasha Alexander) has been a professional screenwriter since 2005 and is a dark comedy writer, producer, and director. A member of WGC (Writer’s Guild of Canada) since 2021, she got her feet wet as a Transmedia writer on Tights and Fights the superhero comedy web series in 2011.

Her directorial debut is her own dark comedy web series LOST JEN focusing on a millennial that lives with her boomer father in a failing economy. It premiered in February 2023. Season 1 will finish airing August 2023 on YouTube, Reel Women’s Network and RireAuCinema.com

Lost Jen (play on the subreddit title “lost generation”) is a 5-minute dark comedy series that follows a millennial, Jen Richards as she tries adulting in a post pandemic world. Click the image to watch 1st episode.

Next up for Jade is a dark comedy film called MARY which has been in pre-production since 2011. It will finally be shooting late 2023. (Click image below for trailer)

MARYA Dark Comedy for the Ages

Mary is an anti-hero you’ll love to hate and hate to love. Her story will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride where you won’t know who to root for; the good guy or the bad guy.

“I’m not a solicitor honey, far far from it…”

– MARY

Coming soon is a web series following four nerdy, yet pretty, best friends in high school as they run the school through the guise of student council, while seeking revenge on everyone that did them wrong. It’s like Revenge of the Nerds, Heathers and Scream Queens combined, but it takes place in Ontario, Canada. Title to be announced soon as it’s still in pre-production.

A Vindication of Monsters-Essays on Mary Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft with Claire Fitzpatrick

Tell us what you enjoy most about writing speculative and non-fiction.

I’m Claire Fitzpatrick, an award-winning author of speculative fiction and non-fiction. What I enjoy most about writing genre fiction is the creative freedom it grants. Writing in the fields of both speculative fiction and non-fiction, including academic non-fiction, has been a wonderful way for me to learn more about the world, and my place in it. Whether it be through horror, science fiction, fantasy, or a combination of all three, speculative fiction allows me to explore multiple ideas with creative freedom.

Describe A Vindication of Monsters in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.

A creative non-fiction anthology about Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley.

What have you found to be most challenging about writing Speculative Fiction?

There are so many facets to the human condition. As the saying goes, there are no new ideas, but new ways to explore and interpret them within speculative fiction. That’s the most challenging aspect! People read widely, and have likely come across similar ideas and tropes. It’s all about providing a unique perspective.

Is there anything you would like people to take away from your book?

Many people dismiss non-fiction as boring or too academic, however, I want people to take away fresh ideas on society, film, literature, feminism, and memoir, and gain a new perspective on the incredible lives of Mary Shelley, her mother Mary Wollstonecraft, and the people, places, and events that inspired them. I also want people to think about the world and the problems we continue to face, especially within women’s rights. It’s insane to think in 2023 women are still fighting for autonomy over their bodies. Mostly, I just want people to think about things they might otherwise overlook.

What has been the toughest criticism you have received as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I am fortunate enough to receive either positive or neutral reviews of my work. However, a few years ago I wrote a science fiction story inspired by how I felt about the passing of my dad from cancer. A reviewer called it the worst in the collection of otherwise perfect stories. The criticism was harsh, and obviously, I took it personally, as it was based on something that directly impacted my life. However, time has passed, and I see it as a learning opportunity. Perhaps it was too early to write about dad? Perhaps I removed myself from my feelings and wasn’t as authentic as I could be? Whatever the reason, I don’t dwell on it anymore.

The best compliment I received was being called ‘Australia’s Queen of Body Horror.’ While I don’t just write body horror, my stories in this genre are probably the most well-received out of anything else I write/have written. I took a little break from body horror and had mostly psychological, paranormal, or science fiction stories published, however, I have recently submitted a new body horror to an anthology. Fingers crossed!

Share some advice for aspiring authors. What advice would you give to your younger self?

I was fortunate to have a relatively successful introduction to writing speculative fiction, as the first horror story I ever wrote was accepted in Midnight Echo, one of the most well-known horror magazines in Australia. It also appeared in their ‘Best Of’ anthology. I have since had one other fiction story and non-fiction published in the magazine. ‘Madeline’ is a body horror story, which I wrote out of my frustration with having epilepsy due to an acquired brain injury in infancy (I was diagnosed when I was 12). I’m 32 this month and still frustrated!). I think authors who are just starting out should use these experiences to their advantage, especially if they identify as having a disability or are marginalised in some other way. I find writing about my real life, and the real challenges I face, allows me to be a more authentic author, which I believe is why I have enjoyed the success I have.

What advice would I give to my younger self? You’re going to face many obstacles. It’ll take much longer than you anticipated to ‘get over’ having epilepsy. And in a way, you won’t – not really. But keep persevering with your writing. You’ll find strength in your anger and isolation eventually, and it will help rather than hinder in the best possible way.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I love to garden and get my hands dirty. There’s something so soothing about gardening. It helps me feel closer to nature and centre myself when I’m having a bad day. I grow a lot of indoor plants as well – my bathroom walls are covered in monstera! It’s relaxing to bring the outside in.

I also like to spend time with my chooks. I have five of them! Sometimes I’ll sit outside, listen to a podcast, and watch them scratch around the yard. Chooks are surprisingly affectionate animals, and very friendly. Just watching them live their chicken lives calms me when I’m feeling stressed. Although they do like to try and steal my toast when I sit out on the veranda for breakfast!

A convoluted trail of clues and misdirection propels this story at a cracking pace. On the way, there is murder, suicide and revenge.
