Chapter ElevenGertie sat back in her chair, her eyelids drooping and her body preparing for her afternoon nap. Fredrick hadn’t come back since the toilet incident, and though the man had left his bag, she wondered if he had thought better of it and decided to make his way out of town. Gertie closed her eyes and relaxed. She hadn’t been able to take a nap the entire time that she was on vacation, and she was ready for things to get back to normal, but just as she began to float into her dreams, a loud knock sounded at the front door.
“Really?” Gertie said, getting up out of her chair. She walked to the front door and opened it, expecting to see Fredrick’s face peering back at her, but the sight in front of her made her more than curious.
“Well, hello,” Bonnie said, her arm around Fredrick.
Gertie started to say something, but the other woman didn’t wait for her response. Instead, she just guided herself into the house and plopped down on the couch, Fredrick at her side.
“Oh, Bonnie,” Edna said, coming into the living room and giving the other woman a curious look. “It seems that you’ve met Fredrick.”
“I have indeed,” Bonnie smiled, running her hand along the man’s jawbone. “And what a man! I hear that this is the brother that you went out of town to find.”
“Yes, this is Fredrick,” Edna stated uncomfortably. “How did you two meet?”
“Well,” Fredrick began with a smile. “I was walking along main street, trying to find an open bathroom when this beauty of a woman came to my rescue. She took me to her house and let me use her restroom and then cooked me one of the best lunches that I had ever had.”
“Oh, stop,” Bonnie said, mockingly slapping his arm.
“Not only is she beautiful but modest too,” Fredrick grinned, looking back at Bonnie. “Anyhow, the two of us just hit it off. I think that I’m going to like this town.”
“Fredrick,” Bonnie blushed.
Gertie sat back down in her chair, her mind running wildly. Not only had Fredrick decided to stay in town, but he had started to charm the residents. Maybe, Edna was right. Maybe, they would have to make the man leave on his own regard. Gertie watched as Bonnie and Fredrick flirted, realizing that there was no modesty between them and then looked over at her wife, who sat stunned in her chair.
“Now if Edna hadn’t hung up on me the other night, I would have known that you were in town,” Bonnie commented giving Edna a sideways glance.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that,” Edna said. “I meant to get back to you. I guess that I forgot. There was a lot going on at that time.”
“Well, you could have at least let me know what was going on,” Bonnie replied. “I feel so out of the loop. I didn’t even know that your brother was coming to town.”
“Looking back on it, I kind of wish that I did get back to you,” Edna said looking back and forth between Bonnie and Fredrick.
Gertie knew what her wife meant by this. If Bonnie knew who she was flirting with then she might not be so nice. Unfortunately, the other woman was known as the town flirt, and keeping track of her romantic life was like watching soap opera.
“Well, whether you got back to her or not, I’m glad that I met you,” Fredrick beamed. “Now, I’ve got to get myself comfortable, but if you are still up to it, I would be honored if you would accompany me later tonight.”
“Oh, I’m still interested,” Bonnie said, smiling back at Fredrick. “And you’re right. I better be going. I suppose you’ll call me before you pick me up?”
“Count on it,” Fredrick grinned, escorting Bonnie to the door.
“I can’t believe this,” Edna mouthed as Fredrick disappeared into the entry way.
“I can,” Gertie grinned, shaking her head. Leave it to Bonnie to fall for a con man.
“What are we going to do?” Edna whispered.
“About what?” Fredrick inquired, making his way back into the room.
“Oh,” Gertie replied, trying to keep her countenance. “She was just asking about your sleeping arrangements. As it turns out, we have a contractor coming over to work on the spare bedroom. Like we said before, we didn’t know that you were coming so we were still working on improvements to the house, and one of the areas that needed work was the other bedroom.”
“Oh, I see,” Fredrick said, his smile dropping from his face. “When is the work to be finished?”
“You know, that’s a good question,” Edna said, getting up. “I’ll call the contractor right now. Maybe, he can settle this sooner rather than later.”
“That would be much appreciated,” Fredrick said. “I came here without making arrangements on the simple thought that I would have a place to sleep, and though I hate to impose, I feel that it might be quite difficult to find somewhere else to lay my head this late in the afternoon.”
“No worries,” Edna smiled. “I’ll call Theodore right now.”
