When you hit rock bottom

With the recent Miss Universe (oh yes I follow that), one part that struck me was the final question. During the top three between Miss Haiti, France, and Colombia, they were asked to answer:

Name something from the course of your life that you failed at, and tell us what you learned from that experience.

It got me thinking, what would I have answered if I was in their shoes?

In the course of my life (so far), I've fallen down a bunch of times, probably countless of times I've been hurt. There is however one lesson that always keeps of being reinforced in my experiences. That is to never give up. When you fall down, get back up and fight harder. The goal is much more worth it when you achieve what you want.

When you're rock bottom, there's no other way but up.

I want what they want.

I thought today should be something different.

This year’s women’s march has had quite the impact for me. It was quite surreal looking through the pictures in the internet and seeing the thousands of women (and men) march for gender equality and protest for their rights.

It made me realize that, even though we have made progress, our world still needs a lot more work. Ultimately, I can see that people are protesting, marching, and voicing out, not only for themselves, but also for the future generation. They want the next generation of people to live in a world where everyone, regardless of gender, gets equal opportunity to pursue their dreams. They want the future generation to not fear for their lives whenever a police car comes by. They want the future generation to live in a world where the only prejudices that exist are those that lift a person up and encourage them to be the best they can be not cage them in a box.

I also want what they want.

As a children’s writer, I have to start taking my responsibility of influencing the future generation in a way that they can relate. I hope that the lessons that they will learn in my books inspire them to become better people in society.
