BOOK REVIEW: "Moon Over Manifest" by Clare Vanderpool

MOON OVER MANIFEST is a story with many layers. Past and present are carefully and skillfully weaved into one tale as readers get a front-row seat into the glory days of Manifest, Kansas, as well of the days when the town falls out of grace.
Abilene Tucker, our heroine, is trying to piece her own life together the summer her father sends her out of harms way during the Great Depression. Disappointed in the washed-up town said to be her father’s beloved childhood home, Abilene is determined to where she, and her father, fit in as she gets acquainted to motley residents of present-day Manifest, and learns more about the roles each played in the past.
This novel is an excellent piece of historical fiction with lovely themes of community and finding your place in an unfamiliar world. I give my recommendation of this book for readers 10 and older.

Book Review: "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry
Number the Stars by Lois LowryMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
NUMBER THE STARS is an amazing, fast-paced fictional account one girl's role in delivering a group of Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Denmark to the safe shores of Sweden, and the events leading up to it.
I spent my entire Saturday afternoon reading this story of friendship, bravery, and love, and I don't regret a single minute. Lois Lowry is an extremely talented writer; my heart raced with her characters, felt the same sorrow as they did, and rejoiced with them on the day WWII finally ended, delivering their compassionate nation from oppression.
This short, inspiring tale will keep you on your toes while teaching you a valuable lesson on true courage. Recommended to all ages by yours truly.

Sorry for the lack of activity here on GR! Life/a new personal project has had me swamped. My upcoming book, The Shepherd and the Sower has been taking longer to release than expected.
I'm working hard on formatting and hoping to have the paperback edition available before this month is over!

TEACHING KINDNESS: 12-YEAR-OLD SELF-PUBLISHES FIRST PICTURE BOOK TO COMBAT SCHOOL BULLYING.
BOCA RATON, FL— Bullying is a hot topic and major problem in our society today. In 2013, a large study showed that about 49% of children in grades 4–12 reported being bullied by other students at school at least once during the past month, whereas 30.8% reported bullying others during that time.1
The best way to approach this problem is to teach compassion to our children as early as possible. Samuel E. Pierre, 12, a South Florida native, wrote a short story teaching children what to do if someone is being unkind to them. “The Panda that Learned to Ignore” stars Cuddles, a young panda who struggles with being bullied by a student at his new school. Cuddles later learns the art of “ignoring” from his father (not to be confused with the act of refusing to take notice of or acknowledge what is happening to you). In the end, Cuddles stands up to the bully and in the process, makes a new friend.
Samuel says, “I was really excited to see my name on a book. I hope it can help kids be kinder to each other.”
The book was illustrated by his sister, Lauren, 18, who is also a children’s book author. Last September, she released her second picture book, “Tip & Lulu: A tale of two friends”, which also teaches empathy to a young audience. About her brother’s book, Lauren says, “I think the hardest part of illustrating this book was working with someone other than me. It was frustrating sometimes, when my vision and his [Samuel’s] vision were different, but at the end of the day, it was his story; I’m glad I was able to do this for him.” Lauren is in the process of publishing her third book, the first in a new series of biblically-based children’s comics titled “Parables in Pictures,” coming in October.
