Departure
How absurd it is
That you should ask me if I’ve forgotten
The way you made me laugh
The songs you sang to me
The drizzle of sweet nothings
The rhythm of your heartbeat
The terrain of your face
When all I remember
Is the way you left

Ice
Pieces
We set floor upon floor
And as our buildings grow higher
Our heads get stuck in the clouds
We keep on keeping on –
Birthing dreams
Expanding our weights
Doubling our money
As our souls quietly rot
Our hearts go hungry
And our conscience fades
Is the only light left in our generation
The dim glow
Of computer and mobile phone screens?

Places
I see you;
The laughter, the technicolor
The curves and the captions
All of it beauty
All of it joy
Everything you capture
Do they set you free
Or are you in a silent prison
Like a lion in a zoo
Bathing in the gaze of those on the outside
Feeding off the things they carelessly throw at you
I see you
But I want to know you;
Your thoughts un-edited
Your smile un-filtered
The mysterious spaces beyond the confines of an Instagram grid

Debarati Dutta is #GirlRising

Education has definitely helped me grow as an individual and a professional. It has given me an opportunity to build a career, and thrive for more success and improved living.

Rooster
The sun spills out at the cry
Scratching the earth
Making a mark
The ground, a home, a battlefield
And afactory
The sacrifice in hard shells,
then boiled or beaten
All the while, daytimeroiling
Dancing in the sunshine,
Satisfied with the day’s work
Until, the scream is cut in half
With fancy silverware.
As here,feathers lie strewn
The shrill alarm risesfrom elsewhere.

Aswathi Mohan is #Girl Rising
Ever since she was a young girl, her dad always encouraged her to be independent. Back then, she never understood why, when she would have much preferred to count on her daddy at all times.
He always reminded her that he didn’t expect her to be the kind of woman who needed to depend on her father in her earlier years, her husband after her marriage and later on, her son. While it wasn’t that he wouldn’t be around if she needed him, he wanted to raise a woman who was strong, self-sufficient,...

Hiii![image error]
Latelast year, I read about GirlRising, a wonderful campaign to fuel conversation and raise awareness about educating girls. I immediately applied to be a Regional Ambassador and was selected (YAY!). Sincewe women love to talk, let’s talk about this! Let’s tell our stories and use our gifts of observation and insight and empathy to get people thinking and inspire them into action.
Over the next few weeks, I will post experiences and stories of men and womenwho believe that every girl d...
