being off

This time of year there is much talk of Seasons and Greetings and Winter and Weather.  Especially if your T.V. only gets The Weather Channel.  And you leave it on day and night.  You will probably dream about the weather.  In which case, you should turn it off.  Weather dreams can leave you soggy or windswept or baked like a loaf of bread.

the little things

We have all heard it said that "the little things" mean a lot, "the little things" are most important, and when we are in a thankful mood we should appreciate "the little things".  But there are people in this world who are terrified of "little things".  I would therefore here and now like to be a voice for them.  I am certain that while others gather with loved ones around a feast and pause to be grateful for all they have — the little things included — whether daily or but once per year, those poor nervous souls are quivering somewhere in a corner, scared

chocolate-covered eyes

When presented a box of bonbons, has it ever crossed your mind that the center might not be what you expect?  Of course, it's anybody's guess what hides inside a mixed assortment of chocolates!  Who hasn't been afraid?  An innocent-seeming sampler could harbor unspeakable terrors!  But isn't the soul-shuddering suspense worth the quaking fear?  And isn't that blood rush, the jolt of adrenaline we experience in fear better than a piece of chocolate?

I happen to think it is.

serendipitous

What if you are minding your own business and a curious stranger passes you by, carrying a sack that wafts a fragrance that strikes a chord — reminiscent of an intangible emotion; something distant, lost, perhaps never quite found.  A mere aspiration.  As evocative, perhaps, as a foreign market teeming with spices and intrigue.  Would you be drawn out of your corner, that staid familiar spot you inhabit upon this globe, to chase an inexplicable aroma which has dazzled your olfactory senses?  Might it compel you to pursue this cloaked mysterioso away fr

blue moon

A moonlit night is oft described as silvery, defined by a pale sickle or floating saucer illumining the blue-black sky.  It can represent a comforting presence against dark uncertainties; a radiant yet cooler liquid shine than the gilded sunbeams that saturate our uncloudiest of days.  As if cooked up in a steep homemade mountain still by a hillbilly brewmeister, spilled down upon the lands like the stuff of myth and fantasy, this lunar essence almost seems of magic origin.  Rationally, scientifically, we know better.  It is, however, fun to romanticiz

imperfect

Let me state unequivocally that if you were hoping to read something perfect, sorry, not gonna happen.  I write to my own beat, an irregular rhythm that doesn't follow rules, it simply flows and pulses and is.  That doesn't excuse accidental mistakes of spelling, punctuation or grammar.  But my perception of those things may differ from yours too and besides that, nothing is perfect.  Ever.  So the sooner you accept it, the sooner you can stop expecting it and being disappointed by life and the people in yours.  Whether friends, relatives, si

reverie

Have you ever dreamed while standing up?  How about while standing down?  And how do you know that you aren't dreaming this very instant?  You could just think you're reading this.  Or I might think you're reading it because that happens to be the dream of any writer, to be read.  Maybe you are actually a hopeful figment of my dream.  And what if, simultaneously, I were a wishful part of yours?  Have you ever dreamed that you were dreaming?  And in that dream you had a dream?  What if all this talk of dreams causes you to fall

Nothing!

That is the answer.  So what is the question?  What's on my mind?  I think not.  There is generally some absurd notion or other ping-ponging in my head, bouncing off the inside of my skull.  What's up?  More preposterous still, for there is so very much up, so very much out there, whether going on around us or dangling suspended above us in the cosmos.  Is it what you'd reply prior to taking a backseat daredevil spin down a mountainside in a motorless go-cart if somebody asks, "What do you hope to gain?"  We all do

thoughtlessness

Have you ever had to walk around without a thought in your skull?  How about an absent mind?  It occurs to me.  I can be a very thoughtless person.  I'm kind of used to it, in fact . . . . . . . . . . . .

happy endings

Reality check:  Life is not a fairytale in case you weren't aware, and it isn't always fair.  Sometimes it ends badly.  Sometimes it begins badly.  Sometimes the middle goes from bad to worse.  Which is not quite as bad as from worse to dismal, and certainly not as bad as from dismal to abysmal.  So cheer up if things get worse.  They're usually not as bad as they might be if they were even worse than worse!

Just trying to be positive.
