so i feel like i have no choice but to rent an ATV and circle the island, right? #makesperfectsense #
turns out riding an ATV through the hills of mykonos is one of the best ever times a man can find. farmer's tan and all. #
food in mykonos has been so far about double the price of athens and half the deliciousness. but i'm having a blast. #
. @tomfowlerbug ha- no, the giant pelican was sleeping last night when i saw it. and being eyed by a cat. http://t.co/zXsj2z1 #

kristyn does not appreciate kanye's rhyme of "supportive" with "borders". #
you guys should all follow @EricSkillman, excellent gentleman of lovely times & designer of every great @Criterion cover you've ever loved #
is it me or is the mac twitter app suddenly a lot harder to follow in the conversation screen? #
i am four minutes away from sharing my directorial debut. i can't speak for my filmmaking, but the subject is glorious. #

twitter recap 2011-06-17

HELLO MYKONOS. goodbye, athens. despite the complications and potential to be teargassed, i had a lot of fun. #
let me tell you: lying on the beach is way better than being in a rioting city where everyone's on strike. #
"if someone brought me that cover at a portfolio review i would push that person down the stairs" #
ps @jasonaaron and @kierongillen the greek government beat you to this whole schism business. back to the drawing board. #
sometimes twitter is that mythical tree you whisper your secrets into. #
belated london: http://ivanbrandon.com/belated-london/ #
(sorta) HAPPY BIRTHDAY @seanovanaman #
HOLY SHIT, Y'ALL BLACK METAL 2 IS ALIVE & FINISHED & WILL BE PREVIEWED IN DECIBEL MAGAZINE bit.ly/myr5GI #
also, while we're at it… i dunno if i'm supposed to say this but i've been drinking & i have seen TONS of LAST CALL 2 pages recently #alot #
if i owe you an interview, you'll hopefully get it today or tomorrow. thanks for your patience. #weirdweek #
this is my favorite pic for today http://t.co/2gytiVN #

twitter recap 2011-06-16

lots of chanting & yelling outside. hard to tell yet if it's a demonstration or a riot. or if the one will lead to the other. #athens #
alright, i can't PROMISE this but: sounds like the protest has moved out of the neighborhood. gonna work in the hotel for a while anyway. #
"i'm holding out for a gyro." #
i dunno if it's the threat outside or the fried dough or all the pork gyros, but this city's made the script pages fly out of me. #
so: there WAS a riot, thankfully not in this neighborhood (although not all that far from it) (1 of 2) #
(2 of 2) pictures of folks being gassed about 10 blocks from here in a place we've been every day but today http://t.co/iWTwEgr #
here's a picture of 3 blocks from here, where they set up flaming barricades to keep police out of exarchia http://t.co/YMFJTih #
with any luck in like 4 hrs i'll be able to get on a boat & leave athens, lose all the riots but keep the same # of gyros in my life #

belated london

london

headed to london from paris, spent the better part of the day in an airport for a one hour plane that'd been delayed due to 2 nights of lightning that had damage the airline's fleet. plans got broken, 1 of 2 nights to go out and drink with my friends disappeared. all the while i considered heading back into paris and calling it defeat. lost my ticket at the gate. back out to the airline counter, there's a man with a very big gun. i don't understand the words he uses in french but the intent is clear: he wants me to turn around.

it is explained to me elsewhere that there is a bomb scare at terminal 2. we're off to a great start on this adventure.

when i finally land in london, pulling out my phone to text jamie mckelvie and tell him i'm on my way, it falls face down and shatters like a web of glass. it is midnight. i'm dragging 30 lbs in a backpack. surprisingly the phone still works and without the sun i can even read through the screen.

luton airport really loved my phone

i get to st pancras station and with jamie i board a giant ridiculous bus to hackney where he lives. i have never been here before. i've seen people drive on either side of the street but what's surprising is the clarity of location… the visual cues, the verbal announcements of each stop. in new york, the buses aren't very local-friendly, much less navigable by tourists. on the way, we talk about "english" as a regional distinction and how i haven't heard it used in years.

mckelvie

jamie's apartment is great. huge. i sleep well until 7am when it becomes clear his walls are made of pantyhose and noise.

jamie takes me for a giant english breakfast. we drink australian coffee. i buy a commemorative wedding oyster card with 10 quid on it and we take another giant bus to bloomsbury to one of the smartest comic shops i've ever seen.

i will commemorate forever

first meal in london

we split up and i do my rounds. i'm a speed-tourist… i walk through cities like i walk through museums. fast, shooting hundreds of pictures at angles that mostly don't work.

i head through oxford circus and picadilly circus and through the park to buckingham palace by way of birds with dinosaur feet. it starts to rain but i've got no time for it.

birds with dinosaur feet

i walk out to the houses of parliament, take the metro over to the tower bridge and in a shitty tourist stand, an old polish woman hands me the best fish and chips i've ever eaten.

i find my way to an excellent dinner all by myself. jamie's there and kieron gillen and for the first time i meet tom muller in person. tom's responsible for any design you've liked on any of my recent books. an integral part of the VIKING team. we eat meat and drink wine and get excited about creating things. not about WORK. about telling stories.

me, gillen, mckelvie, muller DUCK FAT CHIPS w/ volpala vinegar, salt

we head to hackney, to an ancient bar full of old men and old music. it's the sort of place you'd go as the cast of a british gangster movie after a funeral. we head to camden and kieron and jamie give me the PHONOGRAM tour. it's an exceptional night. we meet pete and pete adds a lot of fun. and he subtracts the damage to my phone.

the wenlock

hackney

camden

i am back in paris 30 hours later. after a rough beginning, i think i'm ahead.

cream of meat #
so: the day we're supposed to go to mykonos: all of athens goes on strike. so i guess we're here another day. #
in other news i am writing some raps. conveniently: akropolis rhymes with george popadopolis. #
yeah so apparently i may be in an ugly part of town to be in when the strikes happen. tomorrow may just be all day a work day. #athens #
happy birthday to @davidalapham, who is old. #
"the only thing to worry about is the tear gas, because it is the new israeli teargas" -@vasilislolos #
hotel's basically sitting dead center of where any impending riots would happen tomorrow. the good news is, we found a great cheese place. #

posted in order of importance: 1: gonna open up a german-greek restaurant, call it auf PITAsen #
2: just passed a guy outside cooking up his works on tinfoil while walking. on a street with at least 50 people on it. #athens #
happy birthday @mattsloan #
somehow i took 1900 pictures in the last 30 hrs. #
a peek at some, here in the early morning before anyone's awake: http://t.co/7z18AZi #
no, i wasn't kidding about the guy walking and lighting up his works 30 feet from my hotel. #
fun fact about exarchia: the police don't enter as their presence inspires riots. #buttherearegreatbars #
exarchia, athens, where a man can get a great gyro or some cheese from crete and also some crack http://t.co/ugFx4ig #
seriously, if you are multi-billion dollar company you shouldn't be allowed to have design like that. #

twitter recap 2011-06-13

HELLO ATHENS. it is way warmer here. also i am starving. #
alright, i feel like central market's a nice way to go for the first food in athens, right? food markets are always a good time. #
athens: you are the bensonhurst of europe. and i mean that as a compliment. #
seriously you can buy pigeons in athens http://t.co/AKBN5jp #
a quick google search of where @vasilislolos wants me to meet him tonight makes it clear he's trying to get me murdered #
i have seen pages that've lead me to believe maybe @DeanWhiteColor is the best color guy working right now. he's on a whole different level. #
greece: it totally isn't paris. also? it totally isn't greece. somehow it's got a name i've never even heard? ellada, "eh-LAH-dah". #

boarded 6 planes in the last month. tomorrow: lucky #7 #
hey, so: if your only driving purpose for making a graphic novel is "i hate the 22 page format", that's prolly not gonna carry you far. #
those of you who discovered party down too late now have a chance to get ahead of the game w/ following @KenMarino on twitter. #
last day in paris. leave at the crack of dawn. even though it's been a month i'm kinda sad to leave. #
packing for 30 days much easier than packing FROM 30 days. the former, you can get all the stuff you forgot when you get home. #
also it is possible tomorrow i will see @vasilislolos for the first time in a long while. #
seriously, whoever came up with the word "DCnU", that is the worst thing you've ever done as a person. even if you've been to prison. #
local bakery was closed today for my last baguette. had to go elsewhere & eat slightly different bread. all my previous bread is invalidated #
last paris meal: potato stuffed w/ pigs feet http://t.co/VpkCIke langoustine ravioli http://t.co/m64N57F cream of mushrm http://t.co/Um1RTQN #
last paris meal: potato stuffed w/ pigs feet http://t.co/VpkCIke langoustine ravioli http://t.co/Yq6zByT cream of mushrm http://t.co/AVm1PLv #
the other thing is: though we're both in paris, kristyn and i had dinner together for the first time in almost a month tonight. #work #
dear me: anytime you think you should work without a beat sheet? you are wrong. #iamastubbornasshole #
OWEN DOESN'T HAVE ANY FRIENDS #
i think 4am is an entirely unreasonable time to leave for the airport. #
alright, goodbye paris. you were really good to me. #
i hope the greeks have some serious coffee #
