Carnival Masks

.

The text reads: In Carnival, all the masks come off

Annotated: Since Cat has the stone, the only mask that matters is her own

And: The lips of carnival masks are cruel, deliberately so

To one side of the collage it reads: The Empty Woman

And below it: all surface

At this point, I was working up the Plague Carnival chapter of the novel. I obviously hadn't started writing it, though, because I hadn't come up with the name yet. The masks turned out to be an important element of the carnival, as foreseen.

Above: For those who came in late, as a way of drawing attention to my newly-published novel, I've been serializing the Image Book I put together as a way of helping me to visualize Faerie and its inhabitants. There are about two weeks' worth of images yet to go.*

Public Appearances!

.

It's that time of year when I make one or two of my rare public appearances. This month they are...

July 12-14th, Readercon.

If you're going, you know all about Readercon. If not, you won't be there. But I will. I'll be very publicly wandering about and happy to chat with you and maybe even sign a copy of The Iron Dragon's Mother.

July 17,  7:00 p. m. Charm City Spec at:

          Bird in Hand           11 E. 33rd Street
          Baltimore, MD 21218
This will be my first time there, but everyone who's attended tells me it's a great event. In addition to me, Leslye Penelope, the award-winning author of fantasy and paranormal romance,  be reading from Song of Blood & Stone: Special Earthsinger Edition,  andT. Eric Bakutis, the award-winning author and game designer, will be reading from an unspecified book. So it looks to be a pretty darned good night.

I'm looking forward to it, anyway.

And on the above picture from the Image Book . . .

I wrote: The Crow Goddess, blind in one eye, wise but not kind

Then, below the doctored picture, I wrote No! It's Saoirse

Saoirse is a major character in The Iron Dragon's Mother. But to find out more, you'll have to read the book. Or, you know, hang out with that friend of yours who insists on telling you the entire plot of books you haven't gotten around to reading yet.

Above: For those who came in late, as a way of drawing attention to my newly-published novel, I've been serializing the Image Book I put together as a way of helping me to visualize Faerie and its inhabitants. There are something like seventeen more to go.

Happy Fourth of July!

.

It's the Fourth of July, the one day set aside for Americans to celebrate this wonderful, flawed, mad, and beautiful country. We mark the occasion with hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, and potato chips. Also parades. The parade here in Roxborough is something like 170 years old and is organized by the Sunday schools of the local churches. It is so home-town small and kitschy as to make the heart sing.

One year, I marched with Roxborough Baptist Church because they could use the extra body. For the occasion, I wore a red jacket, white slacks, and blue shirt, with an American flag tie and one of those cloth red-white-and-blue top hats.  Pastor Marcia looked at me and said, aren't you hot?" Because it was, of course in the high eighties as it always is here on the Fourth.

Drawing myself up, I quoted Billy Crystal quoting Fernando Lamas, saying, "I believe it is better to to look good than to feel good."

"Boy," Pastor Marcia said, "are you in the wrong century!"

And from the Image Book . . .

Above is a postcard of a female mummy blowing a kiss. Also the entry: 11/29/19 (by which I surely meant 18) The last proof has been done &, please God, the quote from Sylvia Plath's notebooks I decided was too expensive, has been removed.

That was, I think, the second time I tried to remove the quote, replacing it with something in the public domain. Permission to quote Plath is quite pricey and the snipped I wanted, while apt, wasn't irreplaceable.

This is a part of being a writer that they don't teach you at Clarion.

A Dragon-Hoard of Words

.

A Dragon-Hoard of Words
Places, Races, Entities, and Objects of Industrialized Faerie

This list was assembled from lists I put together for the proofreaders of each book as it was published. I suspect that the lists were not always passed along to the proofreaders, but I felt it was important to make the effort anyway. Those guys work hard and get very little in the way of thanks for it.
So to everyone who ever had the rather difficult chore of proofing one of my novels... Thanks. I really do appreciate it.

Above: Yes, that's Goya's "The Colossus." It's amazing how well many of his images fit in my world. "A Duel With Cudgels" was used directly in The Dragons of Babel, translated into a fight between two giants.

The Eagle Has Landed

.

Look what just came in! Neil Clarke, who has a solid reputation for doing interesting things with Clarkesworld, has assembled an anthology of Lunar science fiction written since human beings first set foot on the Moon. The Eagle Has Landed: 50 Years of Lunar Science Fiction is a very cool project and I'm glad to be a part of it.
Here's the interesting thing, though. In his introduction, Neil notes that "one of the big consequences of landing on the Moon would be that science fiction would run away from it... The Moon was considered too close to the news and no longer fertile science fiction territory.
With a few rare exceptions, it would be twenty years before SF writers felt comfortable again setting stories on the Moon.

(When I read that, I thought surely my novella "Griffin's Egg," included in the anthology had been written within that two-decade dead zone. But checking the copyright, I see that, nope, it was published in 1991, 22 years after.)

Science fiction has had a long and tangled relationship with scientific discovery. Somebody should write an article tracing its broad outlines. Not me, however. I'm overcommitted.

And meanwhile, in the Image Book . . .

This rather lovely outline of a woman's face was not drawn but created by cutting away all the rest of the face from a magazine illo, almost certainly an advertisement for makeup or jewelry or such.

But I like the quiet quality of it, the near serenity, and the touch of mystery.

And tomorrow . . .

I've put together a list of all the characters, place names, races, and odd words in the Iron Dragon books. There are, it turns out, rather a lot of them. Tune in tomorrow and see.

Above: For those who came in late, as a way of drawing attention to my newly-published novel, I've been serializing the Image Book I put together as a way of helping me to visualize Faerie and its inhabitants.

Dragons of Babel E-Book Sale! Soon!L

*

Tor, which is, you will remember, my publisher, will be running  an eBook special of $2.99 on The Dragons of Babel L in order to help promote my less-than-a-week-old novel The Iron Dragon's Mother
This  special deal will run the week of July 8th- July 14th as part of the Dragon Week Goldbox for Kindle.
(I have no idea what that last part means, but I'm guessing that mine is not the only dragon novel you'll be able to scarf up at bargain rates. So if you've got a friend who has a thing for dragons, it would be a mitzvah to share this info.

Meanwhile, back at the Image Book . . .

Another image created by folding a picture in upon itself. It's amazing how little alteration it takes to move a human face deep into the uncanny valley.

I am still promoting the heck out of my just-published novel. Don't worry, though. This blog will back to the normal variety and silliness soon.

I've tried to play fair with this, but inevitably some characters will appear under more than one name, one or two are only referred to (only the most important, though, I've weeded the list of a lot of off-stage names), and I may have shorted one or two characters who are referred to only by their titles. This should give you an idea of the cast of characters, though.
This was culled from a much longer list of proper names and odd words which I assembled for the proofreader. I'm considering combining that list with the lists for the other two Dragon novels and posting the results here.

And Speaking of the Image Book . . .

The caption on the left-hand page reads Not this novel but the next. Which means I hadn't discovered the bridges yet. There are bridges in the novel and they matter.

The lower right hand image on the photo above comes from the New York Times, of all places, and shows dancers at the Folies Bergère, of all places. Or it might be the Moulin Rouge. It hardly matters which. All that matters is the Dance of Life and the Goddess, unnoticed, behind and beneath it all.

Dahut merc'h Gradlon

.

This one is a genuine discovery. It's a first glimpse of Dahut merc'h Gradlon, who plays a significant role in The Iron Dragon's Daughter . The picture captures a lot of her personality, I think. She's everything a tragic heroine should be--beautiful, willful, and absolutely unreasonable. Also, ultimately and unexpectedly, noble.

Should I have said spoiler alert?

The page opposite her was left blank because, well, who could stand up to Dahut?

Above: The Iron Dragon's Daughter is on the stands. But I'm going to keep posting the Image Book until it reaches the end.
