Day 4: Volunteering at Turtle Rescue Sanctuary The Olive Ridley Project
Already four days into Pash’s volunteering experience and she has done and learned so much!
Today it was all about turtle spas, duck dives and surreal lightening!
Day 4Day 4 started with a spa day for Azura and Disco, who is one of the juvenile turtles. At sea, turtle are kept spick and span by pilot fish juvenile fish that accompany the turtles on their epic journeys across oceans. This is a symbiotic relationship. The fish are afforded a safe host and can eat scraps the turtle drops (turt...

Day 3: Volunteering at Turtle Rescue Sanctuary – The Olive Ridley Project
As Pash settled into a routine of cleaning tanks, taking turtles for sea swims for rehabilitation she explains why some black tip reef sharks were taking a keen interest in the group on a rehabilitation sea swim for the turtles!
Day 3Now into a routine, I opened the centre up in the morning with the young Maldivian intern Zein. We cleaned another tank (and had a karaoke session at the same time – the acoustics in the tanks are great!), fed the turtles and showed guests around. After lunch it ...

Day 2: Volunteering at Turtle Rescue Sanctuary – The Olive Ridley Project
Pash is settling in quickly, cleaning, looking after turtles and making ghost net bracelets to sell.
Today Pash helped with a seaplane delivery, a turtle with an amputation and a mysterious egg! Oh, and she also started teaching Dr Minnie to freedive!
Day 2After approximately 1.5 hours of sleep thanks to jetlag, I was up early to meet our new arrival. The ORP have a collaboration with the TMA seaplanes, who will fly turtles to the rescue centre at no cost, which is much needed as boats can ofte...
Day 1: Volunteering at Turtle Rescue Sanctuary – The Olive Ridley Project
Following the amazing rescue of Harry the Hawksbill Turtle during December, Pash (one of our freediving instructors) was awestruck by the Olive Ridley Project and wanted to help.
We are so excited to follow her story, as she is helping in the most wonderful way. She was accepted onto their volunteer programme and is currently in the Maldives for two weeks helping the sanctuary alongside Dr Minnie! Go Pash!
Here is Pash’s Diary:Some backgroundThe Olive Ridley Project (ORP) is a UK registered ch...

Rescuing, Treating and Releasing Harry the Hawksbill Turtle
Go Freediving instructors Emma and Pash found and rescued Harry the Hawksbill Turtle when freediving in the Maldives, but that was only the start of his journey to Dr Minnie at the Olive Ridley Project.
After successfully getting Harry out of the water, into a custom-made crate and onto a boat (his crate was too large for him to be transported via air) Emma and Pash thought the hardest part of the rescue was over.
However, not only could Harry not be taken by air – the quickest method – as his c...

I love the water. Being underwater, playing in the water, I’ve snorkeled all my life, and then I did scuba because I thought it would help me appreciate being under the water more, But scuba diving is just too much of a faff, I can’t stand it! It’s nice being down there but ...
