Recording of panel discussion on generative AI

Warmest thanks and appreciation to Jacqulyn Ann Williams for sharing a video from our Education City–wide panel discussion on “Generative AI in Teaching and Learning”! This event took place at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar on September 10, 2024. Its success is due to the hard work of many people besides those who got to sit on the stage. Amir Berbić, Samah Gamar and Nour Tarroun gave beautiful introductory words. Jeromie (Joey) De Leon and Marlon Villones lent us twelve portable microphones, while Mirza Ahmed Baig had technological oversight. Mike Gallagher covered this occasion for social media. The recording is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/jEcZV1p5Sk0

Congratulations again to Virginia Commonwealth University’s graduating class of 2024! This year, I was very honored to lead the commencement ceremony of VCUarts Qatar as Grand Marshal. Once more, I extend my appreciation to Amir Berbić and our Commencement Committee for their trust in me. Matthew Wood-Ward and his colleagues of WMP Creative prepared a beautiful stage for us. Raviv Cohen captured the event at Multaqa in Education City on May 6, 2024, in gorgeous photographs. You can read more about this celebration here: https://qatar.vcu.edu/news/vcuarts-qa...

Astrobites Review of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Astronomy

A double thank you to Sahil Hegde and Samantha Wong for reviewing my Springer book “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Astronomy: A Modern History.” Their beautiful and detailed review appeared in Astrobites, a daily astrophysical literature journal supported by the American Astronomical Society. Hegde and Wong, who are at UCLA and McGill University respectively, call my work “an accessible, jargon-free exploration of DEI efforts in astronomy that is told through narratives of the people who helped these efforts develop and continue.” To make it a triple thank you, I give a shout-out to Alison Crisp of Louisiana State University for coordinating this post. Finally, I am indebted to Kateryna Reshetova, Mike Simmons and Noreen Grice for sharing with me the photographs that break up the text.
