'When The Levee Breaks'

Good Morning,

Fellow Readers and Authors, from Arundel, West Sussex. I hope you have all had a great week wherever you happen to be in this world.

It has been another eventful week travelling, writing, and delivering more digital designs, with an odd moment or two to plan the rest of the year.

More on that subject later in this blog.

Saying goodbye to Scotland once again last Sunday evening, we left Alexandria at 19.30 hrs, and set a course for West Sussex, 497 miles due south.

The journey was broken down, with two stops to grab a coffee, and a sandwich as we drove on through the night.

We were blessed with quiet roads throughout the night, apart from skirting major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham.

It was as we neared the end of the M40 the drizzle started, and by the time we entered the infamous M25 the rain came down with a vengeance.

Despite the above we finally parked up at 5.00 am on the dot.

After a few hours sleep, it was up and away again, closing out jobs and errands, before visiting my youngest son, to catch a glimpse of his van conversion.

He has certainly been busy in my absence, that's obvious. Now I am back, I will no doubt have my weekend planned for me.

Most of this week, I have been staying in Arundel once again. This has become something of a favourite, and both myself and 'Vera2' are becoming quite well known.

It was yesterday, Ricky the car park attendant alerted me to the issue with the Arun River.

With the motorhome parked with the rear facing Britain’s second fastest flowing river, I was oblivious to the exceptionally high tide. By half past midday, the river had overflowed into the café adjacent to the carpark area.

Fortunately, the incoming tide abated at the crucial moment, and several dozen cars, coaches, and 'Vera2' of course, were saved from a possible disaster.

There is a link below where I share a selection of photographs of the river at its highest point.

Please take a look and see for yourselves.

Not a typical week you might say, but full of excitement, nevertheless.

Lastly, my comment at the beginning of this narrative, regarding the rest of the year.

Well frankly it would be easier throwing a dart at a map, and letting it decide where we head off to next.

My ‘Writer on the Roam’ lifestyle has given me the good fortune to meet so many different people on my travels, it leaves me in awe.

There are a host of offers ranging from staying on a sheep farm in Somerset, to mooring up in picture postcard village in Oxfordshire.

In the meantime, while I am throwing darts at maps of the British Isles, may I offer our sincere thanks as always, to those of you adding one of the ‘Our Blue Orange’ series to your bookshelves over the week.

Thank you, it is much appreciated.

Enjoy your weekend ahead. Stay safe, and keep reading and writing 😊

Best Wishes

'Back in Scotland'

Good Evening,

Fellow Readers and Authors, from Scotland. I hope you have all had a great day wherever you are.

Yes, the duo left our homebase Wednesday night at 20.00 hrs, and set a course for Scotland once again.

As I detest driving on British roads during daylight hours, due to the congestion caused by unmanned roadworks, we drove through the night.

The following morning at 06.30 hrs, we arrived tired but happy our journey had been uneventful.

My reference to unmanned roadworks is directed at the road authorities who seem to employ invisible contractors.

Lorries arrive, planting endless lines of cones, then disappear never to be seen again, or so it seems. Only twice on route did we notice construction work being undertaken.

Shame on these authorities for the necessary congestion and pollution they cause, protracting these works across our road network.

With two pitstops for a coffee, and a sandwich, every three hours or so, it helped to break up the journey and provide that all important caffeine intake.

It’s been a while since we ventured this far north, and to our surprise most of the 24 hour Motorway fast food facilities were closed.

I imagine that their overheads pro-rata to the lack of night clientele has made it pointless in staying open during the small hours.

The price of a coffee and a sandwich these day’s in roadside services is another matter.

Frankly they are ludicrous. In fact I thought ‘Vera2’ would need to be re-mortgaged if we had stopped a third time.

The morning of our arrival, some much needed sleep occurred after a piping hot shower, and later that afternoon it was time to explore.

Having spent a large part of last summer in Argyle, I soon noticed the difference in the terrain.
There appears to be fewer conifers here in Dunbartonshire, and far more deciduous trees. Needless to say it didn’t detract from the beauty of Scotland.

Nothing will ever do that.

The following morning a trip to Loch Lomond was in order, and worthy of each and every mile we travelled to see it.

There are two a links below where I share photographs of this beautiful loch and surrounding landscape. Please take a look and see for yourself.

I will keep this narrative short this evening, as we are visiting family, and tomorrow promises an excursion to another venue close by.

In the meantime therefore, I offer our sincere thanks as always, to those of you adding one of the ‘Our Blue Orange’ series to your bookshelves over the week.

Thank you, it is much appreciated.

Enjoy your weekend ahead. Stay safe, and keep reading and writing 😊

Best Wishes

'The Final Chapter'

Good Morning,

Fellow Readers and Authors, I hope you have all had a great day wherever you are.

Last night I found myself tinkering with one of my AI art programs, producing an array of various designs.

Nothing unusual you may think, and neither did I, until a thought occurred to me.

My life as an engineer centred on the construction of those wonderfully lifeless edifices called Data Centres. I say lifeless, as in reality that is what they.

Normally they are manned by a handful of souls purposed at ensuring the continuity of the facilities services.

The fact is they are overseeing the ‘Great Machine’, which seldom, if ever requires the human touch once it is operational thanks to technology.

Whilst I was absorbed in one particular design, the thought occurred to me, how far removed we are as a species from that glorious publication that rocked the world in 1859.

Yes, you’ve got it! ‘On the Origin of Species.’

Poor Charles Darwin would have a coronary if he could see the evolution that has taken place since his departure.

I am referring of course to the core subject of my novels, that irritating itch on the cranium of humanity – Artificial Intelligence.

Darwin’s ability to unravel the history of evolution, and present it to the world in such a fashion caused a sensation amongst the scientific community. The church were no less unimpressed either.

Fast forward to our current timeline, and what do we now have? Our world has been bombarded with technology at a prolific rate since the end of the Second World War.

Our children have, and or are as the case maybe, growing up in a society where the acceptance of artificial intelligence is the norm.

We have fed their imagination, with countless films portraying the normality of humanoid machines imbedded in our society.

And one day very soon it will be a reality.

If only Darwin were alive today. He would bear witness to the final chapter of his work, rewritten of course to embody that final part of our species evolution.

Please take a look at this link. The quotation sums up the situation perfectly.

'Coffee Invitation'

Good Afternoon,

Fellow Readers and Authors, I hope your week is going well wherever you are.

It’s Thursday already, and I am convinced time is on downhill path, and gathering momentum. Yes, another week has almost evaporated on all of us once again.

I really do have to descend upon RadioShack with a shopping list, and set to creating that infernal Time Machine, our Godfrey Davis has in my novels.

Setting the ‘standstill mode’ would be my first option.

Back to reality now. This week I found myself indulging in the usual assortment of creative pastimes, writing and producing more designs to share with our followers on Linkedin, and the Facebook ‘Our Blue Orange’ forums.

There was, however, a chance encounter with a very interesting gentleman on Tuesday morning, shortly after ‘Vera2’ and I came to rest in Arundel for the day.

Commenting on the designs adorning the sides, rear and of course the front of our motorhome, we got into a conversation about writing, and poetry in particular.

Having published a book of poetry himself some years ago, the conversation led to an invitation to have a coffee, and talk further.

Being able to take the time to listen to other peoples backstories is frankly something of a new experience for me.

For too many decades, I crashed through life intent on accomplishing a particular goal, normally work related. Now, and for the past two years, life has become embellished with moments such as this, and long may they last.

Part of that mornings conversation was of course about the current state of affairs relating to Artificial Intelligence, and it’s global impact moving forward.

It appears I am not alone in my concerns for the future, and the impact on life here on Mother Earth.

Moreover, the world we are creating for our children, and the future we are delivering them today.

Please take a look at this link. The quotation sums up the situation perfectly.

'The Irony'

Good Afternoon,

Fellow Readers and Authors, I hope you have all had a great week wherever you are.

Yes, the weekend has almost arrived once again. What a tragedy!

This week I found myself in the lush green countryside of Arundel in West Sussex again.

My help was required, as my youngest son has his heart set on converting a commercial van into a ‘live aboard’.

His father, having spent the last two years almost roaming the length and breadth of this country, is hardly a role model who would dampen his spirits. And so last Friday, at six am we set off to inspect a vehicle suitable for the task.

It wasn’t until I asked the location of the vehicle we were going to see, did the irony truly sink in. The van advertised, was less than fifteen minutes away from where I had been staying near Dorchester.

The Sat Nav was redundant that morning of course, as I guided us to our destination, avoiding now familiar potholes along our route.

Our journey, including traffic jams and road closures was rewarded though. The vehicle was exactly what was required to fulfil his dream.

There was no time to lose, and Saturday morning saw the start of the removal of panels, and the such like. By Sunday evening with a friend in tow, the van was virtually insulated, and ready for the next step.

The strangest thing I find when using my hands to create something, it releases the mind and that creative element we all have.

Book four in the ‘Our Blue Orange’ Series began my fuelling my imagination as we worked.

Quite how long my services will be required, I have no idea. But knowing how our children are always there when they need us, and I am prepared as always to assist in any way I can.

Take a look at the Link below, and see the progress made on the first day with my son’s project.

'When Tomorrow Comes'

Hello,

Fellow Readers and Authors, I hope you are having a great week wherever you are.

Yesterday, this ‘Writer on the Roams’ day was one of mixed emotions I have to say. Leaving the farm again not knowing when we will return was difficult as always, but we had to go.

The weather was idyllic for a trip back to the New Forest, and a final rendezvous with friends.

It has been a strange summer indeed, making new friends along the way, and sadly losing one or two of those dear to me at the same time. Part of life’s sweet pageant no doubt.

Our journey, however, was rewarded with a wonderful pub lunch at the ‘Green Dragon’ in Canterton, in their beautiful gardens with a canopy of clear blue skies.

Chatting with my friends Gary and Kate, made the day entirely perfect.

At a little after four in the afternoon, it was time to turn the key again, and say that last farewell.

Unable to help myself, I used one of my favourite characters parting statements, ‘Until the Next Time’. Amercron brings a smile to my face every time I think of him.

There was one last goodbye though. The staff at Ocknell have also become very good friends over the months, so a detour to the office was essential.

This venue has been another favourite haunt of mine, and a place where the majority of ‘Inara’ was written.

Having read the ‘Our Blue Orange’ trilogy, I was told by the team that there are some cracking reviews appearing on Amazon Books very soon.

Later that evening, the handbrake came on near another of our favourite locations in Arundel, West Sussex.

It will be our base for the next few days. After that, well unfortunately I do not possess a time machine, the likes of those that Godfrey and Jack have in my novels.

Fast forwarding into the future for a glimpse of your life must be wonderfully unique. However, for my part it would diminish the prospect of the unknown, and the challenges we all face with each new tomorrow.

I have added a Link to a recent post on the ‘Our Blue Orange’ Facebook page. Something I wrote at the beginning of April last year.

The final verse sums up that statement in the paragraph above.

Take a look at the Link below, and decide for yourselves.

'Book Four'

Hello,

Fellow Readers and Authors, I hope your week is going well.

It’s Thursday yet again, and the list of job’s to do seems to be getter larger by the minute.

As ‘Vera2’ and I patiently wait for a prompt to return to our decal supplier, I thought I would pen a quick blog.

Most of this week has been spent developing the plot for book four in the ‘Our Blue Orange’ series, which thanks to all of you, is gathering momentum.

There had been a consideration that there was now an opportunity at the end of ‘Inara’, to write three standalone novels. For fear of giving too much away, I am reluctant to elaborate further.

However, having spoken to several of my readers, it has become clear to me that there are many characters in the series, who have gained something of a following.

The development of book four will definitely continue the story, and the characters, continue on with their adventures.

Timescale for completion? With the summer coming to an end, the opportunity will present itself I am sure, for long days ensconced in front of this trusty laptop yet again.

On the AI Art front, there has been a theme this week regarding our favourite topic, and that of Artificial Intelligence.

As we moved forward unchecked into the future, our society I believe is at a moment in time we will one day come to regret.

Take a look at the Link below, and decide for yourselves.
