Hard Copies, Free Promo Weekend & Goodreads Giveaway

Createspace Proofs

I was happy to receive my first printed proofs this week from Createspace. They look pretty good! Flipping through the printed copy is so much Createspace Proofdifferent than on a screen – computer or eReader. There is just something about holding that book in your hands. Of course, they are not perfect, I need to shift the spine image just a little, but other than that I am very happy with how they turned out.

Both my boys were pretty excited about seeing it come to life. I’ve haven’t let either of them read it yet. I guess in some ways I am a little nervous about it. Two of the characters in the books have some similarities to them… It will be interesting to see how they react.

Goodreads Giveaway & Free Promo Weekend

My first promotional push starts tomorrow. My main goal is to get The Betrayal of Ka into as many hands as I can, and to begin to grow my presence as an author. Goodreads Giveaway

Friday, I am launching a Goodreads Giveaway. These are an interesting aspect of the Goodreads platform. It is a great way to begin to build some brand presence and expose your work to potential readers.

I’ve read very conflicting approaches on how to run a successful Goodreads Giveaway. I’ve decided that I will run a short giveaway for a couple of copies of the novel. This will put my book into two of the “tabs” on the Goodreads Giveaway page. I’ll show up on Friday in the “Recently Listed” tab, and then next weekend, I should begin to appear in the “Ending Soon.” This should give me 2-4 days of being fairly visible.

I’m am coupling this with three free promo days through Amazon. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you can download The Betrayal of Ka for free from Amazon.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks prepping for these two campaigns. Some of the promotional efforts include Facebook Posts (including Boosts), purchased promotional packages (including  features on book websites, email features, Facebook posts, Twitter, etc.). I’ve found a number of other free resources for promotion too. Wish me luck!

My Cover is Almost Finalized

As I race to getting my first novel published, I’ve struggled with getting the cover completed. Like many indie authors do, I ran a contest on 99designs.com. It’s a great way to get a bunch of different options, but it can be a little frustrating. Some of the designers really miss on what you are looking for, and some hit it close to the mark.

The misses are easy. Simply eliminate them. Selecting from the good ones can be challenging, but what a good problem to have! However, Murphy’s law is bound to strike. My absolute favorite design was from someone who struggled with English. We went back and forth and back and forth. Finally we reached a point where I could take it over and move toward the finish line with my limited Photoshop skills.

I know that I will need to make some final tweaks, but here are the front and back covers of The Betrayal of Ka!

Hiking Plan, Wild Basin, July 23, 2015

I’ve had a number of people ask me about what to list in a hiking plan. As a solo hiker or hiking in a group, it is important to provide a specific plan to someone that can call in a rescue for you, if you do not return at a specified time. The more information, the better. I have always emailed my hiking plans to a few friends and family, but I thought that I would begin to share them. Please feel free to copy and use these for your own purposes.

I am heading into the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. My plan is to head toward Mount Alice (MAP). I hope to make it to at least Snowbank Lake, but all will depend on conditions. Of course, bears, lions, sheep, moose, or other wildlife could keep me snapping pics and reduce how far I go.

Trailhead: Wild Basin Trailhead

Planned Trails: Main trail to social trails leading to campsites to Thunder Lake Trail to Lion Lake Split. If I make it up Mount Alice, I may continue toward Boulder-Grand Pass and come down via Thunder Lake Trail.

Targets: Lion Lake #1, Snowbank Lake, Mount Alice, potentially Boulder-Grand Pass, Lake of Many Winds, and Thunder Lake

Communication / Contact Time

I will leave my InReach on all day. If my InReach fails, my text-in time is 11:00 pm. After that, my friend, Mike, will call me in.

(FYI – This can be accomplished by dialing 911, and describing the situation. Delorme InReach users can directly summon rescue from their devices.)

inReach Plays Pivotal Role in Saving Novelist’s Life on Turbulent Seas

Shea Oliver:

One more reason to love my DeLorme InReach… This is such a cool story, not just that students on a Maine Maritime Academy training vessel got to do their very first rescue, but that the US U.S. Coast Guard reached out to him before he was in serious trouble. All because he was posting to Facebook from out at sea.

Through two-way communication 1,200 miles at sea, an acclaimed writer texts his way to safety

Michael Hurley departed South Carolina in his 30-foot sailboat for a 3,400-mile solo journey to Ireland. After just 1,200 miles, the experienced sailor found himself in a life-threatening situation as his sailboat started taking on water. Hurley brought a DeLorme inReach to communicate with his family and friends, and post to Facebook throughout the journey, but the device played a major role in coordinating a rescue when the conditions were too rough to continue.

Hurley’s journey began on May 25, 2015 when he left Charleston, South Carolina for Ireland. The goal for his daring adventure was to find inspiration for his upcoming novel “The Passage,” a story about a man who discovers a stowaway on his boat while sailing from Charleston to Ireland.

After two weeks of near-ideal weather, Hurley sailed northeast along his planned…
