Dear Blogger | Give Your Blog to God

Dear Blogger,
Each of us embarked on our blogging adventures for a reason.  I don't know what yours was.  Were you wanting to change the world and give hope to the hopeless?  Did you want to make new friends while sharing your heart in words?  Or was this a simple idea that began to grow into something beyond your imagination?
If you're like me, you can look back on your early days of blogging and shake your head.  Young me knew so little.  I could have never imagined where I would be 2 1/2 years later.  God used this blog to change me so much.
I learned, I changed, I grew.  But I also sighed, grew discouraged, and wanted to give up.
I'm getting off track here.  This letter is for you, dear blogger.  So, if you have a place on the internet you see as home, here's what's on my heart.  I want to share two things - a challenge and encouragement.






















The Challenge
This has always been my biggest struggle with blogging:
me.
Yes, me.  I started off my blog for Jesus.  It was to spread His story of love to the world.  More specifically, God called me to start this blog from a single verse.

I will...talk of Your deeds.

- Psalm 77:12

That was it.  Just talk of His deeds.  How simple right?  Wrong.  It's been a battle at times - a battle between myself and Him.
Myself doesn't blog to lift others up.  It blogs to get more comments.  It blogs to see the follower stat rise.  To promote myself, to please myself.
I still fight this mentality.  It's hard to blog because of Love.  It's hard to keep from turning people into followers.
But when we do that, we miss so much.
Dear Blogger, we can't blog to promote ourselves.  And we absolutely can't see beautiful people made in God's image as mere numbers to boast about.  Our reason for blogging must be so much more.  When we became Christians, we gave up "self" to live for Christ.  He should be the focus of our daily lives.  And do you remember what He says about others?  (see John 13:34 and Philippians 2:3-4)

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God;

- 1 John 4:7

My goal in blogging is to show Love to you and to God.  The number of followers, comments, and stats doesn't really matter in light of eternity.
I challenge you to give your blog to Jesus.  Let Him use it.  Let the words you type be typed through prayer and out of the outflow of your relationship with Him.


The Encouragement
There's another side of the follower dilemma.  When we look at our stats and are unsatisfied, we can often feel like we aren't making a difference.
I can't give you answers.  I can't say if you are or are not making a difference.  And guess what, I can't say that about my own blog either.  But I've realized something.
More than 14% of the page-views on my blog have been from a single Asian country in which I don't know a single person.  While this might seem unnerving to some, it gave me an interesting idea.
What if people read our words who we'll never know about?  What if in that Asian country, in which being a Christian is unpopular, there was a fellow believer who was encouraged by something I said?  What if God's using my blog in ways I'll never realize?
I don't know who reads the words I write.  I don't know if they go in one ear and out the other or if they're really making a difference.  But it doesn't matter.  Because if I'm writing for God, isn't that enough?
My friend, you don't know how God's using you.  So press on.  Write for His glory, and give your blog into His loving hands.  Even if no one comments or if it seems like no one cares, let Him do the work He's best at - changing the world.
Live to hear Him say these words,

Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.

- Matthew 25:21

Keep writing!  Keep living for our Savior!  Don't let anything distract you from what matters most.
Who knows how God will use your life if it's completely dedicated to His will?

He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.

Dear Girl | Embrace God's Plan

Dear Girl,
I wasn't originally going to write this.  I was planning on only posting about reading/writing related topics.  But then I remembered that there's so much more to life.  Let me explain.
Last week, my family went on a trip to Iowa.  We drove through endless fields of soft, brown hues.  We watched windmills spin, white in the light of the sun.  We passed rolling hills, arching bridges, and cities that stretched up into the sky.  During those long hours of driving, I had several goals of what I could accomplish with a seat-belt strapped around my shoulder.  My goals always consist of three things.
I have three areas of life I focus on.
I'm a Christian - I strive to have every area of my life reflect the love of my Savior.  I try to love Him with all my heart and tune my own dreams to reflect His plan for my life.
I'm a writer - I have writing goals such as finishing projects and keeping up with blogging.  I also read to help my writing abilities grow.
But I'm also a girl - I have relationships and a family whom I devote myself to.  I have hobbies and work that I try to keep under control.  I have emotions that go crazy, a room to keep clean, and a schedule that drives me nuts.
So if you're a girl, here's what I want to tell you.
Life's crazy.  It hurts.  It confuses us.  We face decisions and deadlines.  We try to balance a million things.  We're horrible at juggling, and sometimes our lives show that quite clearly.
Some of us are depressed.  Some of us are broken.  Some of us are afraid.
But dear girl, it's okay.  God's got this.
In Psalms 18, He gives us so many promises.  He promises to deliver us from our enemies because He delights in us.  He promises to support us.

For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect.

- Psalm 18:31-32

God's in control of our life - victories and struggles.  Yet we also can't accept less than what He has in store for us.
He has an amazing plan for our lives.  It might not have the glitter or comfort we're hoping for.  His plan might include poverty or persecution or peril.  But it's an epic adventure.  Why wouldn't we let the Author of history write our own life story?
My friend, the One who lead David to battle and Esther to go from peasant to queen wants to use YOU.  He has plans for your life (Jeremiah 29:11).  But those plans won't come to those who dilly-dally and dance through life living for themselves.
I don't want to be a Christian who lives in the lukewarm atmosphere that's only too common in our churches.  I heard that the name "Christian" was a term that non-believers gave to those who radically lived for Christ.  They were so different from the rest of the world that even those who denied the faith noticed their passion.
I want a faith like that.  I don't want to call myself a Christian.  I want it to shine from every area of my life.
I hope you want that same radical fervor.  Life wasn't meant to be lived half-heartily.  God has an amazing story specifically for you, but sometimes you must be willing to let go.
It would be nice to know all the answers and decisions in life.  And yet, that's the beauty of it.  God is directing every part of our life for a specific reason.  Maybe one day, we'll finally be able to see the "why"s.
But if you're wanting that set-apart life for Jesus, He's given us some hints at what He expects from those who love Him with everything.

You will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

- Jeremiah 29:12-13

Dear girl, if you want to find Jesus and let Him consume every area of your life - writing, reading, relationships, and more - are you willing to let go?  Are you willing to pray to Him and seek Him with all your heart?
I know you have so many things begging for your attention.  I do too.  It's hard to balance everything.
Yet, I also know this.

For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.

- Psalm 18:28-29 

As you face life, remember that you're never alone.  You are loved.  Treasured.  And He has an amazing plan for your life.
The question is, will you let go and let Him write your story?  In every area of life?
Let's be radical.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

- Philippians 4:13

Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Dear Christian | Read the Word

Dear Christian,
You know you're supposed to read the Bible.  You know it's the inspired Word of God and sharper than a double edged sword.  But maybe you're struggling along and don't know where to start.
Well, guess what - I'm right there with you.  Reading the Bible can become a tedious chore that we do every day to cross off a box and feel good about ourselves.
It doesn't have to stay that way.
Reading the Bible isn't a chore.  Relationships don't work if we have a list of "do"s and "don't"s.  If we live with that perspective, we have it all wrong.
Here's why:  God didn't have to create the world.  He chose to.  He wanted to make people who willingly chose to love and serve Him.  When we instead raised our tiny fists in anger, He gave us a second chance.  God created a way for us to return to Him so we could be restored to Eden one day.  The Bible is His letter of love, faithfulness, forgiveness, and salvation.
When we read the Bible, we're reading the Words of eternal, mighty God.  It's not drudgery - it's a blessing beyond words.
That Creator wants to have a relationship with you.  He wrote a long, passionate letter that tells the story of His love.  It shares stories of people He loved who made decisions.  Some embraced and followed Him; others treated Him with scorn.
The Bible shares the songs of praise that fellow Believers lifted up to heaven.  It offers practical advice in living in His presence.  It directs us to the path of Salvation.  Beyond our wildest imagination, God finished His letter with a peek into the future when evil would be overthrown and we would return to Eden to live in His presence.
It's a love letter.  Because He wants to be your Best Friend.





















Some people make rigid structures in how you need to read that love letter.  You start here and read until there.  You highlight these verses or underlines those ones.

That's all good in and of itself.  If you need a schedule to motivate yourself to keep being in His Word, use one by all means!
I haven't found a verse or chapter in the Bible that tells me how to read it.  But it does tell us that His Word should always be in our hearts.

And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

- Deuteronomy 6:6-7 

Go find yourself a quiet place.  Turn on soft music or push away the noise.  Pull out pens, highlighters, notebooks, dictionaries, or concordances.  You could study original Hebrew or Greek text through online sources such as this one.
You could sing.  You could dance.  You could pray, or memorize, or read.
But dear Christian, be in the Bible.  Read from cover to cover.  Pray through verses and hide God's Word in your heart.
Sometimes I read chapters end upon end.  I race through books and then sit back, soaking in the beauty of the overarching story.
Several weeks ago, I decided to see what it's like for so many of our brothers and sisters across the globe.  I took four loose pages of a book of the Bible that happened to be Romans.  I then spent my time digging through these few chapters as if that was all the Bible I had.  For some people, it is all they have.
My friend, read and write and pray away!  Sweep through entire books or chew on every word.  How you read the Bible or where you start doesn't matter.  Just do it.  Don't put it off for later, because, if you do, you'll never going to start.
Being a Christian is so much more than reading an old book and going to Church.  It's a relationship.  Let's seek after Jesus.

Dear Writer | Live for More

Dear Writer,
Your words have power.  They have purpose - if you use them wisely.  Remember that.
If you're a writer, you've already been giving a huge blessing.  God's given you the gift of words.  Maybe you don't think so, because English can trip anyone up (trust me).  However, there's something so much more important than grammar and a flowing story-line.
There is something we often forget.
We can't define ourselves as merely "writers".  We're people.  We have schedules and families and friends.  We can't bury ourselves in our writing and miss out on all the rest.  What would it matter if we gained the whole world and lost our soul?  Or what would it matter if we wrote a best-selling book, got published on a renowned website, or created a story that brought tears to someone's eyes if at home our lives were falling apart?
Writing is important.  Maybe it's your calling.  But don't forget that Jesus is what matters.  If you spend your life doing things for Jesus, you'll miss out on having a relationship with Jesus.  He wants you.  Not your writing.  You.
Jesus will often use your talents to do amazing things.  Make Him your priority.  Then you'll be writing something worth reading.
I'm just starting to learn this lesson.  I'm still struggling.  Inwardly, I want to live my life for myself.  I want comfort and schedules and routine.  But we're made for so much more.
A real Christian's life should be lived from the outflow of her relationship with Jesus.
Everything.  Writing, reading, words, it should all be because of a passionate love that overwhelms their life and seeps out from them every time they open their mouth.  This isn't writing.  This is so much more.
There are no meaningless moments in life - even writing.  Every one counts.  Let's make sure we don't waste them.
You're more important as a person than a writer.  So take a break.  Focus on relationships.  Sit alone in God's presence.  Maybe then you'll be ready to write with enthusiasm without forgetting what matters most.
I want to share one last piece of encouragement.
It's easy to get into "author mode" and look over everything with a critical eye.  Sometimes we forget to like our writing.  We pick out commas and stress about character flaws.  We wonder what a reader would think.  Or we erase yet another email and wonder how to share what we really want to say.
Guess what?  First drafts aren't beautiful.  Neither are second or third drafts.  Don't let yourself get carried away with perfectionism.  Sometimes the best thing you can do is explore your writings as a reader.  Turn off editing and wrap yourself into the story.  Read.  Feel the emotion of the story and embrace where God has already led you.
Then get back into editing mode with a bounce in your fingers.  Embrace every stage of writing knowing that there's a purpose in it.  If we wait to live life until a certain point, we'll never truly live.  So live right now.  Give yourself away to Jesus and write up a storm to His glory.
Dear Writer, I know it's hard, and you might feel discouraged.  If life was easy, we would never achieve anything worth success.  Start today.  Life for more.  Don't be just a writer, but when you do set your pen on paper, let it fly from fingers eager to share a message of hope with the world.
I'm cheering you on.

Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

Dear Reader | See Words Differently

I'm a reader.  I read novels and blogs.  I read emails and essays.  I read textbooks and letters.  And I read my Bible.
If you're here, you must be a reader too.
I've discovered that when my eyes scan over written words, I fall into similar patterns.  I read books quickly without going in depth.  I click on an email, my eyes scan over it, and I click away.  When I get into a routine, it's dangerous.  I'm threatened to miss out on so much.
I want to change that.  I want to read things differently and reach their full potential.  As a reader and writer and Christian, I don't want to live in routine.
Over the course of the next three weeks, my goal is to encourage you to see things differently, namely reading.  I'm going to cover three different labels we give ourselves and see if we can discover something more.
At the end, perhaps we can have a discussion to tie it all together.  But let's jump in and find out how to read differently.





















Dear Reader,
It's easy to take words for granted.  I do it all the time.  We live in an age where knowledge is readily available.  At the touch of our fingers, we have access to the endless world of the internet, which can open us up to great opportunities and great danger.
One of the dangers is this: we start to take people for granted.  We read blogs, reply to emails, and scan over articles flippantly.  We scroll through the many avenues of social media to fill our time.  Maybe we do this to fill an emptiness deep inside that would otherwise tear us apart.
But we can't do this anymore.  Haven't we hidden long enough?  There's a real world out there, and we can't run to the temporary world of novels and media to hide what's inside us.
Words are powerful, but we can't let them take us away from what's most important.
True Believers in love with Jesus are told to love the Lord their God with all (Deuteronomy 6:5).  Are we filling our heart and soul and using our strength to read what is building us up?  Are we joyfully filling our minds as Christ wants us to with,

Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.

- Philippians 4:8

Is reading merely an excuse to run away from life and embrace the exciting world of fictional characters or social media?
Reading in and of itself is not bad.  I have been encouraged many times by written words.  That's also why I seek to write words that bring hope to others.
The question is why do we read?
But there's another problem readers often run into.
We're surrounded by words.  Information runs around us begging for our attention.  Authors struggle to find willing publishers because many of them are overwhelmed by the amounts of stories turned in.
The internet is overflowing with articles and blogs and other forms of media.  Twenty-six little letters can form millions of words that are twined together to create messages and stories and meanings beyond numbers.
However, we can't let the overflow of words drown out the truth that someone wrote them.  An author out there poured their heart into the words.  Every sentence you read has meaning and purpose.
A name isn't a number.  It's a person.  Every message you read and every person you come in contact with has dreams.  They're looking for something.  So share a little bit of Jesus with them.
A book has an author.  An email has a sender.  We can't read every story or encourage every person in the world, but we can make a difference in that one person.  That doesn't mean you can't leave a negative review when you read a poorly-written book, but in everything we do we must do it to bring a smile to Jesus' face and spread His story of Love.



My friend, don't read because you're "a reader".  If you read, do it to grow in Christ or draw others towards His heart.
Each day is made up of minutes, and our lives consist of days.  We must live each minute in a way that counts. If we don't, how will our lives ever make a difference?

So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

- Psalm 90:12 

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart b e acceptable in Your sight,  O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

I Have the Same Resolution as Last Year

It's New Year!  2018!  A new year with new goals and hopes and dreams and adventures.
Or so I thought.  As the clock ticked past twelve and a new year opened its eyes, I stared up into the sky at a moon nearly full.  Its light illuminated the midnight sky and came down to rest upon me, just another pair of eyes gazing up.  There with a full heart, I thanked God for the new beginnings.  The past was gone, and a horizon opened before me.
I thought of the future.  What could I achieve in 365 days?  Where would I go, and what would I do?  What goals could I set?
But today I realized the truth.  I have the same New Year's resolution as last year.

God gave me two words to focus on last year.  I dug into them.  I spent time laboring to understand their real meaning and how to apply their truth.
And yet now, at the beginning of another day, I'm still wondering what they're all about.
Abide
I want to discover what it means to abide in Christ.  I want to know God on a personal level and feel His breath in every aspect of my life.  The verse that stood out to me was from Jeremiah.

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

- Jeremiah 29:13

That's the answer!  All I would have to do was search for God with all my heart!
As life continued, I realized how hard it was.  All is a big word.  It means everything.  How does one dedicate every part of his life to one goal?
But that's what I want - to know Jesus as a best Friend and truly find Him.
Love
The next step happened when I discovered the truth of Deuteronomy 6:5.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

- Deuteronomy 6:5

Another answer!  If I wanted to discover God, I just had to love Him with all.  But there was the word again.  All.
I dove into both topics.  I tried to apply them in my own life and discover how to abide and love God completely.  That was the focus of my year.
What about 2018?  What new goals could I choose and reach for?
When I began to get ambitious, God gently turned me around.  It was as if He pointed at the last year and smiled.
All that thought and discussion and time was good.  But it's not over yet.
That is the worthiest resolution of all: to know and love our Savior more.  That's why I don't have a new goal.  Abiding in Christ might never be accomplished in my lifetime, but I want it.  Surrendering every aspect of life to Him and loving Him with my whole heart is hard.  Yet nothing is impossible with God.
The year rolled around, and I'm back to where I started.  I wonder if anything changed.  Do I abide a little more than I did last year?  Do I love more?
It's an endless journey.  But doesn't that make the adventure that much more exciting?
I want to live a life worth living.  A life focused on Jesus.  That's the only one that will matter.
I'll still make goals, but they're smaller goals to keep me on the right track.  My ultimate resolution is still Jesus, and I pray that He will be my goal for the rest of my life.
I can almost hear the Narnian voices urging us on.

Come further up, come further in!

(ps)  If you're like me and you're wondering how much you've grown in Christ this last year, I have a challenge for you:  Ask a family member.
I know, I know!  This is terrifying.  But if we aren't honest and open about this, how will we ever know if we're pressing on towards Jesus?  So ask.  Just a simple, "have you seen fruit in my life that I'm pressing on towards Jesus?"  Present the question and accept their answer.  We need to be growing in our relationships with God and others, and what a good way to initiate a deep, God-focused conversation with a family member!

Be brave.  And do it.~♥~

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, my dear friends!  What a wonderful, beautiful time of the year that's very special to so many because - Jesus.  Our all, our Savior, our King.  The Everlasting One who loves us, small and weak though we are.  ♥
I'm took most of last week off internet, and I won't be back on until almost New Year.  But I hope you're having a wonderful Christmas celebrating Jesus with everyone you love, and I'll return shortly to reply to comments.

This fall I realized how much I like Christmas.  I used to get annoyed by the holiday ads begging for your money.  The self-centered kids writing letters to Santa begging for hundreds of dollars of useless stuff.  The flashy lights, crowded stores, and lack of focus on Jesus.
But this time, I saw more.  Or perhaps I see more, because I'm still learning.
Christmas draws people together.  Friends and family are reunited over long distances as they celebrate.  Strangers walk with a smile, and their faces light up with you offer a sincere, "Merry Christmas."  Lights deck the nighttime horizon making little children laugh and offering something to warm your heart in the midst of the night.
There's joy.
For those of you who are celebrating the advent season, the word of this week is χαρά.

Joy is a beautiful part of a Believer's life.  It's not just a fruit of the Spirit that we long to have.  In Christ, we have Joy.
The book of Philippians describes true Joy.  It doesn't come through having everything we want - but through looking out for the interests of others (Phil. 2:3-4).  It doesn't come through gain - but through sacrifice (Phil 2:5-11).
The apostle Paul wrote,

Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.

Christmas is a time of joy, but does the joy last?  Happiness is a fleeting emotion that comes and goes like a breeze on the wind.  Joy is deeper - a heart attitude that lasts because of the hope we have in Jesus.
When we're scared, Joy says that Jesus is still strong.  When we face sickness or death, Joy assures us that Jesus is the worker of miracles and the keeper of our breath.  When someone betrays us, Joy holds us tight in Jesus' arms.

"As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love ... These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full."

Chara is the decision to trust in darkness, believe in the storm, and love despite unfaithfulness.  Because Jesus is enough.
Recently I read a book about Christians during the time of Nero.  They were burned at the stake, thrown to wild beasts, and separated from loved ones forever.  But as they faced death and humiliation, they sang praise to God.  The martyrs looked past earth and up towards heaven where their Savior was awaiting them with a crown of glory.
It's easy to be happy in the beauty of Christmas.  Yet Joy is so much more.  It's something that will thrive during winter break and continue when school starts back up.  It will blossom during busy times and be strong when we are weak.

Christian joy is a profound decision of faith and hope in the power of Jesus’ own life and love.

Let's follow Philippians and "rejoice in the Lord always.  Again I will say, rejoice!" (Phil. 4:4)  Let's thrive in the promises of Christmas that Jesus loves us so much that He came to earth as a babe.  But when the new year comes, let's continue to praise God because "His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations" (Psalm 100:5).
God is always good.  You are always loved.
So let's rejoice!

The Solution to Everything

Let me tell you about myself.
I'm a writer who forgets to write.  I'm a blogger who posts a day late.  I'm a friend who forgets to pray and respond to emails.  I'm a sister who forgets to love and encourage my siblings.  And I'm a Christian who often feels distant, distracted, and discouraged.
That's the real me behind this blog.  I don't take perfect pictures or write flawless first drafts.  I don't pray without ceasing or live in constant unity with God.  I wish I did.
Last week I had the chance to share a verse with a struggling friend, and yesterday God turned it around to gaze straight in my face.

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.

- 2 Peter 1:3 

The problem isn't what I don't have.  What really matters is that through Christ, I do have everything I need for life and godliness.  Try to tell me that's not amazing.
Life:  Through Christ, I can have joy no matter what comes my way.  I can love those around me despite their (and my) flaws.  I can exhibit the fruit of the spirit.  I can persevere and be faithful in what is good and turn away from what is evil or distracting.
Godliness:  Through Christ, I can abide in His presence and live with a heart of worship.  I can share my faith because His love overwhelms me.  I can be diligent in His Word, pray throughout the day, and lift His name to everyone around me.
I have everything I need.  Through Jesus.





















When I was little, I learned this truth in a practical way that I try not to remember too often.  I faced the daunting task of washing an oatmeal pot.  Large families use big pots, and the oats were stuck to the side.  I cried.  It was impossible.  If I couldn't wash it in 10 minutes, how could I ever do it?
But afterwards, Mom took an embarrassing picture of me holding the same pot, now shining bright and clean.  My cheeks were stained from tears, but I learned the truth in Philippians.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

- Philippians 4:13

Don't miss the words at the end.  Through Christ.  It's all because of Him.  In and of myself, I can do nothing.  But through Christ, I can do all things.
Sometimes that means being joyful in the little moments.  Just now, I had the opportunity to pause and smile with my little sister as she stuck a pretend pig snout on her nose, then her head, then the hammock, and then on my own face.  Each moment counts; when we live them in His power and with His heavenly perspective, life becomes all the sweeter.  (this post was a sweet reminder to me this week.)
Instead of living a discouraged, half-lived life, I want to remember that I have everything I need for life and godliness.  I can do all things through Christ.  Let's not forget that.
I realize I shared most of this in my last post, but it's a constant reminder for me.  Being a Christian is a decision - a decision to live with and for Jesus Christ.  That's the best life we could live.
