In Conversation with Harish C Rijhwani - Author of 9 to 5 Cubicles

My first writing experience was way back during my engineering days when I co-authored the second edition of an electronics book with one of my professors. I understood how publishers work to a large extent, but there was intense competition for the specific book we planned to revise, and things didn’t pan out. After six to seven years into my corporate journey, I got interested in writing blogs because that is a way to share knowledge. At that time, I again tried to rework the earlier electronics book, but still, there were many apprehensions from the publishers, mainly due to the intense competition. Ten years into my career, I began teaching as a visiting faculty, and after a long journey of 17 years in the industry, I thought of writing a book about healthcare IT (Healthcare Decoded). During the pandemic, I published a marketing book (Technology to Business – The Invisible Gap) and a Data Science book (Master the Mystic Arts – Begin your Data Science Journey). Finally, after much thought and additional learning, I wrote my first Novel in 9 to 5 Cubicle Tales.

I don’t think there is any industry/profession where there isn’t any pressure. Even as an author, one is stressed if our work will get recognized. As an entrepreneur/independent business owner, one worries about finding the next customer or big idea. As an educator, the challenge is making students not only understand the concepts but also give them a vision of how to use the same in real life. The corporate world is no different; it can be compared to an exam of real life where we meet various characters in our day-to-day life, some supportive while some who love opposing your ideas.
3. You have shared several relatable anecdotes. Was it inspired by your life?I would say these experiences are from the corporate world but not limited to a single person. People who have read the book can relate to many aspects as they feel nostalgic about finding a Job, the training one undergoes, working on a client project, visiting the US for the first time, and many more. The way the book is written, you might feel you are the book’s main character at some point.
4. The book wraps at a note of optimism and ambiguity. Was it intentional?Well, that’s reality, isn’t it? Life is never about clarity; only when you move ahead in life is when you realize the reality was right in front of your eyes, and you needed to connect the dots. The book’s essence is to showcase that whatever the situation, one needs to stay calm and keep trying to reach our goal. In the words of Rocky Balboa, “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

I wouldn’t say I was always in the world of words. From my youth, I have been a quiet person; even my responses to other people I spoke with were in the form of an SMS (still is though ). However, I realized I needed to improve my communication once I entered the corporate world. So, sometime in my corporate journey, I read the book “Made to Stick – by Chip Heath and Dan Heath” which made me realize how to communicate. Between September 2021 to March 2022, I did two courses on creative writing, which helped me on my journey into the world of writing.
6. Are you planning your next book?Absolutely!! By the way, 9 to 5 Cubicle tales is a 4-5 part series; fingers crossed, I have a long way to go.
7. What is your advice to aspiring writers?Create a plan, and execute the same!! For any idea to be successful, execution is more important. You might have a thousand ideas, but they will remain an idea if you don’t act on them. For example, if you want to write on a specific topic and focus and diligently write 500 words daily, you will have written a novella in three months.

An Imperishable Promise by Sarathi Sabyasachi Sahoo - Book Review
A relationship is like a crystal bowl. The more careful you are the longer it lasts. My father taught me this when I was getting married. After years, I saw a father like that through the book imperishable promise by Sarathi Sabyasachi Sahoo.

Imperishable Promise by Sarathi Sabyasachi SahooA couple heading for a divorce approaches the guy's father and announces their decision. The readers expect the father to create a ruckus but on the contrary, he narrates a love story. The story of Raj and Kashish. Is it love at first sight? No. Is it a conventional love story? Yes. But is it a puppy romance? NoThe author has beautifully depicted the beauty and depth of the relationship between Raj and Kashish. A casanova of sorts falling for a girl might come across as a cliche but the author has made sure not to overdo the act.The back story begins with Deepak falling head over heels in love with a girl who passes by. Deepak is a goody-two-shoes kind of person when it comes to women wherein Raj, Deepak's best friend is a playboy. Raj volunteers the task of making the girl fall for Deepak. Will she fall for Deepak? Who is she? How will Raj's relationship with her develop? What happens further? The plotThe basic plot is rich. It has a lot of possibilities to develop into a classic love story. The way the relationship develops is slow and steady and at a believable pace. Also, the author has developed the romance at a platonic level contrary to the protagonist's character. The blurb reveals way too much of the plot, which could have been avoided. Because by the time Raj starts chatting we know that yes this is going to happen. That surprise element could have been kept had the name of the girl not been revealed in the beginning. But as and when the plot proceeds, the unexpected happens and I loved how the author has brought a different perspective to the whole plot. The narrationThe author's style of narration is vernacular, seemingly targeting beginners and YA lovers. The story is a simple sweet and cute story of Raj and Kashish but in simple language, the author has knitted a beautiful tale of romance, unlike the overdoing by so-called best sellers. The charactersThe characters are relatable. The characteristics could have been developed on a larger canvas. But nonetheless, the author is successful in connecting them with the readers. The author has given different shades to all characters. Kashish could also have been given the shades in varying degrees but that doesn't affect the development of the overall plot.Overall the book is an easy breezy read but it could have been a tad bit tight-packed with one round of sound developmental edit. But if you are looking for a simple read that is fast and easily comprehensible this is the one for you. The tribute to Sidharth Shukla made me emotional and the tragedy in the end forces the readers to connect with the 'Adhuri Kahani of Sidnaaz.

90 Days by Anirudhya Mitra - Book Review
I was 6. No knowledge of news, or politics, but it stuck to my memory like a stubborn stain that something happened to someone who was a ruler. There was a bomb blast, there was someone who bent down, and there are arrests, but what was the matter? It took me years to know what it was. The blood-chilling murder of Rajiv Gandhi. The massacre shook the nation and the incident changed the political scenario. 90 days by Anirudhya Mitra is an account of the detailed anecdotes of everything that transpired during the investigation of the Rajiv Gandhi Massacre.

BlurbAt 10.20 p.m. on 21 May 1991, a young woman bowed before Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, 42 km north of Chennai. And then there was an explosion.
This book is the definitive account of one of the most controversial crimes in contemporary India. It unravels the complex plot hatched by the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) to ensure that Rajiv Gandhi did not return to power in the 1991 general elections.
Ninety Days provides a blow-by-blow account of how the Special Investigation Team of the CBI cracked the assassination plot, identified the assassins, and chased the mastermind, Sivarasan, to his final hideout. The deaths from cyanide consumption of the members of the hit squad left several unanswered questions in their wake, which this book explores.
Anirudhya Mitra is a journalist and filmmaker. During a successful stint (1982-93) of news reporting in The Times of India and India Today, he broke several stories, including the Bofors scam, Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, drug wars in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, money laundering by the BCCI bank that led to its closure, corruption in the judiciary, the life and times of Indian-model-turned-spy Pamela Bordes, godman Chandraswamy and others. He moved to writing and creating television drama series with UTV in Mumbai in 1994 and also wrote and produced movies in South East Asia.

Enemy at the Gates by Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills - Book Review
Mitch Rapp is back with a bang! When the enemy is standing in front of you, you can be on a defensive mode but when the enemy is disguised as one amongst you, the pain, and the impact would be manifold. Enemy at the Gates by Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills is a fast-paced adrenaline rush for the readers when the plot jumps from the dark jungles in Africa to the post-concrete jungles in America.

After the demise of Vince Flynn, Kyle Mills has taken the character sequel forward for the readers. Kyle Mills has tried their best as an author to show justice to Vince Flynn's craft. The Mitch Rapp lovers expect the fast-paced nail-biting scenario. While Kyle Mills has done a decent job, some scenes fall flat.
Characters As with any Vincy Flynn novel, Enemy at the Gates have a well crafted set of characters that we will be engaged to read about. The characteristics are sketched in such a way that they lead the plot. The suspense The suspense element is as usual the highlight of this book like any other Mitch Rapp series. But at times the varying pace of the plot took away the reading experience.About the authorVince Flynn was a New York Times bestselling author of eleven thrillers, including most recently EXTREME MEASURES and ACT OF TREASON. He lived in Minneapolis with his wife and three children. He died on June 19, 2013, after a three-year battle with prostate cancer.Visit www.vinceflynn.com

Samudran by A R Vikram - Review
If you have been following me, you might already know that I am not a fan of fantasy but I am obsessed with thrillers, and characters grounded in reality. When it comes to a book that amalgamates fantasy with thrillers and fine characters, then I cannot say No. Thus Samudran by A R Vikram made it to my TBR

The charactersThe characters are realistic without any over-the-top character traits. When it comes to the protagonist, Samudran, he gelled with the rest of the characters without giving an impression of "here I have introduced the hero" but still, he stood out with the sheer finesse of the craft. Everyone in the research team has been justifiably created and developed. The introduction of Meila was filmy for that matter but it didn't take away the reading experience. How they connected with each other and unknowingly came close. Amidst the cliche, boy meets girl and started making love kind of shallow love story. The roller coasterThe pace of the plot takes momentum slowly and sucks the readers inside and takes them along, but once we are in a groove the plot stagnates. Then the readers are taken to the various customs of the tribes and then one twist after the other, which helps the plot soar and further a lag which weighs down heavily on the pace of the plot, again pushing it forward with a blooming romance. Thus the pace goes up and down. With a good mix of fantasy and suspense, the author has pulled off a good attempt. If you are a fantasy lover you will love this book. If you are a thriller lover you will love this book. If you are a romance lover you will love this. Overall the book has a wide target reader group. The post is written as a part of Book Marathon Hosted by Outset Books.

9 to 5 Cubicle Tales By Harish C Rijhwani - Review
While I was growing up, there was a trend of pushing kids into engineering or medicine. The peer pressure and the norms of society would force the kids to look linearly at their careers. Result - many kids hooked up in a 9-5 job. As much as it seems colorful, the pain of the monotony in their routine and the insecurities and politics. 9 to 5 Cubicle Tales by Harish C Rijhwani is the tale of the corporate life of Hridaan Rajdev.

Another remarkable factor about the book is the friendships that are depicted in a realistic fashion. There are no over-the-top howlings, unwarranted misogyny, or any sort of activities that the current generation would forcefully want to see in "cool" friends. The author has also made sure to keep the characters grounded and not to portray any miss goody two shoes or perfect prince charming for that matter. When it comes to the IT industry, corporates revere working on-site that it is a golden opportunity that is otherwise unattainable. It took me to many of my friends in a similar zone.
No happily ever afterThe climax is what touched a cord in my heart. How the author did not give closure and keeps the message open for the readers that life is a story that never ends and goes on and on. While the overall plot and execution were realistic, engaging, and sincere, the length of the book is something that brings the overall plot over a barrel. If you are a book lover, join our Outset Book Club and meet other book buffs.

Prescient, Ethereally Realistic, Haunting - Pull Of The Stars By Emma Donoghue

Three women and a maternity wardNurse Julia Power, Social worker Birdie Sweeney and Dr. Kathleen Lynn lead the plot and hold the readers glued to the book. Life in the ward is depicted with a brutally realistic narrative. The pain and tribulations of COVID patients are pulling the world apart and hence it is impossible to imagine a parallel situation in the Yester century.
Fewer characters, a closed background, and a breathtaking plotIt is impossible to read a book with an undisturbed mind. How Emma has lucidly portrayed the swaying thoughts of Julia thereby bringing a spicy yet sour flavor to the otherwise bland yet bitter scenario is commendable.
If you are someone who is affected by painful and intense scenarios this book would haunt you. If you are a historical fiction lover, you would find it painful to keep thr book aside. Impeccable and ethereally realistic reading experience.
About the Author
Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge, England, before moving to Canada’s London, Ontario. She is best known for her novels, which range from the historical ( The Wonder, Slammerkin, Life Mask, The Sealed Letter) to the contemporary ( Akin, Stir-Fry, Hood, Landing). Her international bestseller Room was a New York Times Best Book of 2010 and was a finalist for the Man Booker, Commonwealth, and Orange Prizes; her screen adaptation, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, was nominated for four Academy Awards.
