DareDreamers by Kartik Sharma and Ravi Nirmal Sharma- Review
Book Name - Daredreamers Author - Kartik Sharma and Ravi Nirmal Sharma Publisher - Rupa PublicationsBuy books from Amazon
Review
A group of talented forthcoming young people set out to save the world with unique high end technology. The premise with humongous possibilities could be developed into a bestselling novel as well as blockbuster movie. Dare Dreamers is one such book for which possibilities are boundless.
Rasiq a fresh IIM graduate joins his first job as an investment banker. With zero rest and abundant money, Rasiq's life becomes aimless. Feeling the heat of boredom and monotony, Rasiq decides to quit his job to start something of his own. Nevertheless he is unable to decide on what he should start off with. After distressing pressure from family and society to do something, Rasiq finally lands up on a novel idea of a start up. With the help of five unique and extraordinarily talented individuals, Rasiq starts his start up named DareDreamers- These superheroes Nick: a crazy inventor; Halka: an inhumanly strong man; Arjun: a champion shooter; Natasha: a Bollywood stunt-double; Dr. Vyom, a medical Sherlock Holmes; and, of course, Rasiq: the mastermind combine their unique talents to deliver spectacular rescue operations.
The title Daredreamers and the cover image is reflective of the whole idea of the book. A new generation start up to help people who meets with an accident at a lightning pace is no more a fantasy. The idea of a group of youths coming up with unique idea is no longer a rarity. PayTM, Uber,Byju's App,Other online stores, etc have given us numerous examples of ideas that could be shrugged off as a fantasy. Hence the overall idea of DareDreamers could not be written off as a fantasy. It is indeed a futuristic fiction of a Father-Son duo. Since the book was written by a Father-Son duo, the relationship between a father and son is depicted subtly without losing the depth. The consistent pace is the highlight of the book. It takes off as a YA romance, which could have been cut short but the build up was justified considering how the tale develops. Once the start up takes off, the growth is quite slow, which in itself makes the book a realistic one.
The five super human figures could not be counted as Superhumans as such since we have come across similar individuals in our lives. In a era before the multi speciality hospitals came into being, we have had doctors who used to diagnose the diseases by simply examining the patients, which justifies Doctor Vyoms characters. Similarly most of the characters have a real life example.
The scenario with Rasiq and Ruchika could have been depicted better. The ambiguity behind the relationship and that around Ruchika's character pulls down the conviction with which the scenario was built up. The same obstructs the possibility of making the book a perfect thriller.
I can vouch for the fact that a start up similar to DareDreamers will come up in the near future.
Verdict
A futuristic thriller.

I Wish I Had Not Married My Love by Ashish Roy- Review
Book Name - I Wish Had Not Married My Love Author - Ashish Roy Publisher - Maple PressBuy books from Amazon
Review
Trust is the base of any relationship. Friendship or love, if that trust is not there, the relation is baseless. Ashish Roy has come up with a touching tale of Mohith who sets out to find out the truth behind the death of his friend Madhav.
Madhav, his wife Araksha and Mohith were collegemates. Araksha and Madhav gets married to each other and finally start working in the same company. Madhav is accused of sexual harassment by his colleague and Arakasha who is in the investigation team created within the office finds him guilty, after which, he commits suicide. Mohith could not believe that his friend would molest a woman, much less suicide. What happens further is the suspense.
The book is a novella that portrays the bond of friendship between Mohith and Madhav. The plot takes off with Madhav's death. Nonetheless the character is live throughout the plot. The narration is simple and suits first time readers but the lack of proper editing doesn't qualify it. The suspense factor is done with conviction and the intermittent switch from the present to the past is done seamlessly. The campus life of the friends are fun filled and makes for a good read. However, the climax was predictable.
VerdictSimple and straight plot

Time crawlers by Varun Sayal-Review
Book Name - Time Crawlers Author - Varun SayalBuy books from Amazon
Review
Aliens have always been a mystery for human beings. People from another planet incite the curiosity irrespective of the generation or demographics. So does time travelling and other science fiction topics. Varun Sayal has come up with a collection of stories that will grab the readers who love fantasy.Time crawlers is a collection of stories that target a group of fantasy lovers. The first story Eclipse is about the extraterrestrials that infiltrate our planet. Author has served a unique mix of fantasy and literature. The second story Death by Crowd is an interview with an organiser of an event where in people set themselves ablaze in front of a crowd who has paid for it. The story is eerie and gut wrenching. Genie is a hilarious and the most entertaining story in the book. It is a conversation between Marco and an ultra modern Genie. The title story Time Crawlers is a conversation between Jokie and a Historical scientist. The twist in the climax was unexpected and breaks the monotonous pattern. The next story called the cave is also a conversation between a General and consultant about a magical cave wherein noone entered the cave has come out alive. The last story Nakh-astra is yet another fantasy in the background of a Warfield. Author has successfully brought about a historical ambience in the same. The stories have a medium yet consistent pace. The style of narration is also going along with the overall mood of the book. The book is brimful of fantasy and author has kept everything in the right meter. Notwithstanding the repetitive pattaern in a few stories, author has managed to pull off an engaging book.Verdict
A cocktail of fantasy, science, dystopian and fiction.Scenario: 4 /5

The Nine-Chambered Heart by Janice Pariat- Review
Book Name - The Nine-Chambered Heart Author - Janice Pariat Publisher - Harper CollinsBuy books from Amazon
Review
To be loved is a woman's greatest achievement. Anyone's dream for that matter. A girl being loved by nine people at different points of life is the highlight of the book.
Nine chapters, nine narrators and one female protagonist. The characters that the nameless female protagonist connects with at different point in her life, are conversing to her. The unique fact is that all are not male. The point that author tries to put across is that a relationship is not necessarily love or lust. It could be special friendship too, adorned with admiration. The point is portrayed well and the character of the female protagonist is painted with brilliance. There is no dialogue, no name, no description- All that the readers get to know about the female protagonists is through what the other characters communicate with her.
The depth of emotions permeate to the readers but time and again, author loses the grip or so it seems. The pace of the book is not consistent and the level of interest that it generates in the readers is also sporadically obstructed. Notwithstanding the inconsistency, author has compensated with the depth of the emotions.
The book is unconventional in itself that it is not possible to review it in a conventional format for the characters are not characters as such. The target readers if niche and ones looking for a funny, light read might find the book disappointing.
Verdict
For those who are looking forward to deep emotional tales.

Table For One by Neha Bindal- Review
Book Name - Table for One Author - Neha Bindal Publisher - Hal Baked BeansBuy books from Amazon
Review
"Quite your , Go on a trip and see the world" We have seen a lot of quotes in the same line. Table for one, is the story of a girl who made this real.
Tara is dealing with a heartbreak. While trying to overcome the pain, her parents compel her to get married to Saurabh. After much persuasion, she agrees but on one condition- She will go for a solo international trip. Thus sets out a single girl on a solo trip full of fun, adventure, apprehension, happiness and emotions. Will she come back and marry Saurabh? Will she find love in the trip like Simran of DDLJ did?
As a package the book is gripping, poignant, medium paced contemporary fiction. Tara's loneliness is perceptible throughout. The incidents that she come across during the trip portrays her as a vivacious girl who smokes and drinks and have fun, Tara's basic character is compromised somewhere and gets vague. The confusions could be attributed to the situations that she land herself on. The plot is not the conventional pattern. Since it is a travel fiction, the incidents make the plot. The style of narration is vernacular and hence the first person narration suits the book.
The author loses the grip of the story and erratically derails the storyline but later comes back on track. The rest of the characters are ephemeral and gets replaced easily without leaving an trace or aftertaste. The title is apt for the book and the book cover too compliments. However the layout of the book could have been better.
Verdict
Engaging read of a girl who sets out for an international trip alone.

An Unsuitable Woman- An anthology by various authors compiled by Shinie Antony
Book Name - An Unsuitable Woman Author - Anthology compiled by Shinie Antony Publisher - Rupa PublicationsBuy books from Amazon
Review
The woman who is not living by the rules of the society, the woman who has attained the impossible, the woman who fought for the right- She is the unsuitable woman. The anthology Unsuitable Woman is a collection of stories by renowned writers. The book has a strong feministic proclamation without crossing the thin line between feminism and female chauvinism.
The readers can start off with a poem by Mani Rao which is emotional, followed by the story of Meenakshi. Meenakshi has been one of the most beautiful women before she was deformed by the man whom she loved. Now the world knows her as Surpanakha. Author Anand Neelakantan has shown a different view point to the whole scenario in Ramayana.
Sher-Gil My Inspiration by Anjolie Ela Menon, Aurat Vakeel Aayi by Leila Seth, The Woman With No Breasts by Manu.S.Pillai, A Tomboy Queen by Jaishree Misra and A Single Mother's Battle by Mitra Phukan are the accounts of real women who had been painted in a different light. The women with no breasts and Tomboy queen are the stories of Nangeli and Rani Laxmibhai respectively. While Nangeli has been portrayed as a symbol of middle class woman who fought for the right of covering the breast, in reality her cause was different. Same applies with Ran Laxmi Bhai who had always tried to avoid war while she has been portrayed as a fighter woman. Both stories try to picture the real women and the real cause that they fought for. The rest of the stories are emotional melodramas that delve deeper into the desires and emotions of women and also tells us about the women who lead a different and unacceptable lives as per the standards of the society.
Some of the stories have a strong feministic indulgence, some of them have tried to inculcate the male version as well. Most of the stories were serious while that by Sampath.G. is hilarious and with the quirky narration, tickles the funny bones. All the stories do not fall in the same meter but excluding one or two glitches, the book is a price-worthy piece of art.
Verdict
Price-worthy and interesting read for those who like read women's fiction

Chennai to Chicago by Sriram Ramakrishnan
Book Name - Chennai to Chicago Author - Sriram RamakrishnanBuy books from Amazon
Review
A 90's kids being taken to America from Chennai. The book Chennai to Chicago is the real life experience of the author.
Through the book, author discusses in detail the difference in life style between India and America. Through the quirky narration, author has managed to keep the interest of the readers. The instances like talking about girlfriend in different contexts, coming across couples who are kissing in public, talking about parent's home and my home etc are introduced to the reader in a hilarious way. What need special mention is that author has not tried to paint himself as a Mr two goody shoes. Well, the usage is a twisted one to suit the situation. Author has frankly stated the mistakes he did as well as the kind of thoughts he had. He has even confessed about how he by passed paying the insurance.
The author has compared the two nations without prejudice and bias. In between, he takes us to his childhood and adolescence. His romantic encounters are also depicted. Author has given nitty gritty instances in detail and hence it affects the pace of the story. The plot regains the pace when the author is back in Chennai and goes for a trip.
Being a South Indian 90's kid myself, personally I have been able to relate to several thoughts that author had in mind, especially the favorite song and the ideology about relations.
Overall the book is an interesting read
Verdict
