Jump into Spring with a New Book!
I am so happy that SPRING is around the corner! Last year I visited tulip fields in Washington State. It was breathtaking. Here is a photo from that visit.
I am so excited about The Witch of Belle Fleur coming out soon! Woo hoo! Click here to pre-order your copy today!
What I’ve been busy with —
I recently blogged about Five Reasons We Love Telenovelas. I hope you enjoy the post. I remember watching telenovelas with my mother and sisters. We laughed and cried together.
In my novel, The Witch of Belle Fleur, Juliette is a telenovela actress and a witch! It’s amazing how life inspires authors to create characters and plots!
The Witch of Belle Fleur has had a long journey on its way to my readers’ hands. It has received three book contracts and after much thought,
I decided to go indie! If you’re interested in reading about my book’s journey, please read a guest blog post I wrote for Women In Publishing.
Quote I LOVE —

Adventure in Berry, France – A True Story
Sometimes adventure can come around when you least expect it.
Before my trip to Paris, my friend, Margaret said, “Call me when you’re in Paris and we can meet up.”
We both lived in Miami, at the time, and volunteered as artists at University of Miami’s Sylvester Cancer Center. She told me she would be visiting an old friend who lived in Berry, France. It seemed like a vague situation that I didn’t feel comfortable with.
I told her, “Yeah, sure.”
Honestly, I had no intention of calling her and staying with her friend. I wanted to get away and have a relaxing time, going to museums and seeing Paris. I was ready for a solo vacation—just me, myself, and I.
But, after being there two days, I realized I should give her a call. I love Paris and had been there a few times, even visiting with my two sisters, in the past. This trip was different. I was in a different place in life and decided to call Margaret. Maybe she would visit Paris before heading back to Miami, I thought.
She answered the phone and asked her friend if I could visit.
Then I hopped on a bullet train and said yes to adventure.
The call led to an amazing few days in Berry. It was like walking into another world.
The home we stayed in was magnificent. It was made of stone and wood and was the home of the family who made the ceramic tiles for the castle beyond the stables and lake.
Yup, you read that correctly.
Needless to say, in the morning as I stood, gazing over the lake, and watching the horses mill about, I pinched myself to confirm that it was not a dream.
An unexpected twist!
Next morning my friend asked me if I would be okay with staying three days more because the family dog, a gorgeous long-haired snow-white dog, ran off.
The hostess, who was so sweet and wonderful, didn’t feel comfortable being alone without her dog. Her husband would return from Paris on Saturday.
I felt a mixture elation and guilt. I hated that a dog might be out there suffering and that I was benefiting from her absence. I stayed the extra three days and had an amazing time.
Yes, I even had tea in the castle! The hostess’s parents owned the castle. Again, I’m telling the truth, here.
Takeaway
There are good people in the world. Wonderful adventures are around the corner. Be open to adventure when it knocks on your door.
My book, The Witch of Belle Fleur, is about a teen who says yes to adventure! She says yes to becoming a telenovela actress and she says yes to becoming a witch.
Juliette is faced with challenges, as we all are, but it’s how she overcomes life’s challenges that’s exciting. She finds that working with others like her is the only way to defeat evil.
I hope you enjoyed my tale of my time in Berry. It is a story I love telling.
Oh, and about that dog—she came home with her new dog boyfriend. I guess she said yes to adventure, too!

5 Reasons We Love Telenovelas
Telenovela is a fun word that rolls off the tongue. It is so more than just a soap opera.
Telenovelas have moved from the small productions of the 1950’s to vast collaborations between Grupo Televisa and China with a spin off of Yo soy Betty, La Fea, known as Ugly Betty in the U.S.
Let’s find out why we can’t get enough of telenovelas…
Telenovelas are short and sweet. A telenovela can run from a few months to about a year. This gives viewers an out, as opposed to standard soap operas which run for decades.
Telenovelas cast attractive actors. Women and men wear lavish fashion, decadent jewelry and artfully applied makeup. Let’s not forget the “are you kidding me” perfect hair! We feel more beautiful just by watching. Viewers are transported far off to a place where calories and flawed makeup do not exist.
Locations are exotic and vibrant. Look behind the actors next time one of them remembers their name, or a blind person suddenly has the gift of sight while at the wedding of her long-lost twin You will see decor that asks, “Why not?” Eggplant wall color, green vases and sunset colored furniture. A true delight for the viewer surrounded by neutral colors.
Story lines are never, ever boring. Telenovela writers have a blast adding crazy twists and epic blind sides, knowing that viewers will scream with delight and pain. Lovers never have it easy in a telenovela. The easier their beginning is, the more complicated and devastating their future will be. And this makes watching entertaining. You can be sure that after clicking off your television, swiping your smart phone’s screen closed, or shutting your laptop, you most likely have an easier life than the main characters.
Love always wins! The two lovers will find each other, despite the villain we love to hate. It may be years later, but love always overcomes any amnesia, kidnapping, baby switching, blackmailing or self doubt. And that is why telenovelas are here to stay.
I cherish the many telenovelas I have watched with my mother and sisters over the years. These sweet moments were the inspiration behind my character, Juliette. In my book, The Witch of Belle Fleur , Juliette is an Afro-Latina who is a telenovela actress and becomes a witch.
In the book, she watches telenovelas with her aunt. At one point, she realizes her life is more insane than a telenovela. I think we’ve all been there at some point in our lives.
What we NEED to see more of:
Let’s have more Afro Latina actors be cast in leading roles! If you want to read an article about this, check out this Huffington Post article, by Carolina Moreno.
Read more about The Witch of Belle Fleur here:
In a family brimming with secrets, Juliette learns her mother was a Destroyer Witch, and her father was a Healer Witch. This teen telenovela actress doesn’t have time for magic, yet magic finds a way into her life.
Juliette must choose between becoming her town’s Lead Witch or just walking away from magic and being a regular human, like her drop-dead gorgeous best friend, Victor. Eventually, she finds out that Victor has a few secrets of his own…
Although her instincts tell her to run from magic, magic might be the only way she can save her dying aunt.
She unwittingly brings magic back to all witches in Belle Fleur, including Thane, an ancient evil witch who wants Juliette’s power and soul.
A hot new mysterious guy comes to town and turns up the heat. Juliette’s feelings for him grow, just as she sinks deeper and deeper into the new world of magic.
Can Juliette balance her Healer and Destroyer sides while she tries to defeat the evil that hunts her and those she loves?

3 Reasons YA Fantasy Author is Enchanted with Mangrove Trees
I love mangrove trees. I am a Miami native and remember seeing these wetland trees line Greynolds Park’s waterways. The trees enchanted me so much I even ventured into kayaking to be closer to their enchanting beauty. I loved watching the rippling water lap along their long roots.
In my book, The Witch of Belle Fleur, the mangrove tree plays an important role in Juliette’s full transformation into a witch. I won’t give away too much, but it’s a dramatic transformation process. I can’t wait for you to read it!
Here are a three reasons I love mangrove trees:
Mangrove trees stretch their long and graceful roots into water and find a way to survive. They are survivors!
These trees are land makers. Dirt gets trapped in their roots and over time land is formed. They are creators!
Mangrove seeds can travel miles and miles, finding a new home to thrive. They are travelers!
I made sure to add mangroves in The Witch of Belle Fleur. Read more about the book, here:

Cheerio on My Yoga Mat – Ditching Perfection Part 2
This year I’ve jumped back into yoga, or rather stretched into it. I’m older and hopefully wiser. I’m ditching perfection and showing up—which isn’t always easy. So here is my third blog post of many this year. Yay me! I didn’t give up on my blog challenge.
This blog post was inspired by the little Cheerio that was hidden in my yoga mat—courtesy of my little one! LOL! I made sure to take a quick photo of it before I rolled up my mat.
Even though the yoga instructor always says not compare oneself to others, I can’t help but sometimes feel like I’m going for the gold in the Olympics each time I step on the mat.
Ugh!
Well, this time, I had a cute little reminder to chill out and enjoy the process. I swooped low for a forward bend and noticed this cute little Cheerio on my mat just behind my feet.
The cheerio dissolved my self-imposed perfectionism. I smiled as I unwound and enjoyed the moment on the mat.
What did the little Cheerio on My Yoga Mat remind me?
Let go and stop trying so hard
Enjoy and give in to the moment
Remember the love of those around you. That Cheerio represented my toddler’s hugs
I don’t know if a Cheerio is going to show up on your mat, or another silly moment will pop up for you. When it does, recognize that it’s there to remind you to give in to the moment.
I’m still over the moon for my new book coming out soon. The main character has a bunch of things thrown at her at once. She’s a recent high school grad, new telenovela actress and new witch. Whew! Juliette juggles it all in THE WITCH OF BELLE FLEUR.
I was inspired to write the book because of my love of nature and my fascination with magic.
Read more about the book here.

Forget Perfection!
Okay, so you all know that I’m blogging every week this year! Perfection will not be part of my plan at all. Perfection is a set up to feeling lousy and giving up early.
Part of me is excited and part of me still wonders what have I gotten myself into! We all know that feeling. So, what helps me keep this self imposed challenge going? I am ignoring the desire to be perfect.
The flowers above are not perfect, but they are beautiful as is. I need to keep that in mind each time I sit at my laptop to write.
Take a deep breath. No one is perfect.
So, join me this year in ditching perfection for other things like:
Creativity
Let’s focus on the process rather than the product. It will help us loosen up and be open to where creativity takes us in all parts of our lives.
Joy
Children are great at this. I need to remember to bring more joy into my life by accepting the imperfect.
Expression
I’m going to express myself more this year in different ways that are true to who I am.
Fun
It’s got to be fun! Yay!
I’m getting ready for my book launch for The Witch of Belle Fleur. It was so much fun to write and was an expression of what I find fascinating in the world. It’s full of magic, romance and more.
Email me at isabellehardesty (@) gmail dot com with how you’re ditching perfection. Let’s do this!

Blogging and My New YA Fantasy Novel
I’ve been working on my book, The Witch of Belle Fleur. It’s a YA fantasy about a teen who is a telenovela actress and a witch! It was fun to write and I’m adding bits and pieces in my upcoming blog posts.
My little one is growing and growing! How is this happening so quickly?
One of my goals is to write a post each week during this year. This wasn’t my idea. I happened to read a blog post by Tim Ferris. You can read his blog post here. As I read it, it scared me. That’s when I knew I had to do it!
Why did I decide to write a post a week? Yes, Tim Ferris is cool, but it was more than that.
I wanted to command time and not let 52 weeks zip by
It’s a great way to turn off that inner critic and just write
I’m curious to see what I come up with
It’s a great way to connect with readers
This will help me be a little more fearless
I look forward to seeing how I grow with this self-imposed challenge.

THE WITCH OF BELLE FLEUR
Chapter One
Juliette Mariana Fontaine loved the simplicity of the swamp. It was a contrast to the Miami telenovela set where she spent most of her day yesterday. Here in the swamp, she wasn’t a niece, granddaughter, or a new telenovela actress—she was just herself.
She marched behind Victor through the narrow and overgrown path they had walked for years. Juliette tore her gaze from his sweaty neck and eyed the sky, happy the rain wasn’t finding them, yet. A river of sweat trailed down her forehead and she wiped her eyes. She pulled the last bit of eyelash glue from her eyelid, wondering about cottonmouth snakes and magic—but not in that order.
“Do you think magic’s real?” she asked.
Victor pulled the water bottle from his lips, “Why?” He drank his water, keeping his eyes on Juliette. “I saw you last night on Amor Magia, you know.”
“I was only on for one minute. I stood behind that crying woman who wore the low-cut red dress.” She hoped he could drag his eyes from Dara’s cleavage during the scene. She waited for his response. “What did you think?”
As she waited for his response, Juliette imagined Survivor’s host narrating their moment in the swamp. “Juliette’s waiting for a reply from Victor, but he’s not jumping in yet. Victor’s mouth’s opening and he is about to answer Juliette. The question is, will she like his answer?”
“You were great.” He smiled widely.
“Thanks.” It impressed her he didn’t talk about Dara’s cleavage—everyone did.
The telenovela she acted in was about a woman whose twin sister died at birth. The maid who was really her mother raised her. There were twists and turns in each episode all revolving around revenge, forgiveness, betrayal, fear and love.
“Your Spanish was good. I didn’t hear any accent.”
“I just had one word to say,” she said, shrugging.
“Si,” they said in unison and laughed.
He did it again. He avoided answering Juliette’s question by distracting her. She flashed her brown eyes up at Victor, “Do you believe in magic? You never answered me.” She watched as he weighed his answer. Her eyes stung as another drop of sweat trailed down her forehead and into her eyes. She blinked the burn away.
“If I had magic, I’d levitate two pizzas here right now.” He laughed. His smile faded. He clenched his jaw, and then he frowned, looking away.
She wondered what cloud had swept in, darkening his mood. “But do you believe, Victor?”
Victor turned towards Juliette and stepped closer to her. His scent mixed with the sweet and primal smell of the swamp.
Juliette didn’t know if she hated the aroma or liked it. She breathed in deeply, realizing she liked it.
His eyes locked on hers. He finally looked away. “I don’t know what I believe in, to be honest. Here we are, living in Belle Fleur, Florida, once claiming to be the most magical city in America. Big deal. I don’t see any magic—do you?”
“You didn’t answer my question, which means under that cool and calm exterior, there’s part of you that believes in magic, beyond sports superstition.”
“Maybe. It’s good for your aunt’s diner. So, we have to believe, right?” He forced a smile.
She stepped into the tangled roots of the trees and waved for Victor to follow her. She figured magic should have fixed everything by now if it was as powerful and real as her aunt said it was.
She wondered if she’d take her aunt’s path and turn away from magic or embrace it like her parents did. She knew she would lose Victor if she chose magic. Her deepest fear was unleashing the storm she sometimes felt inside. Just thinking about it sent a shiver down her spine.
“All I need is one cottonmouth snake for her herbal medicine. It won’t be that hard to get the venom. I watched a video online this morning, about ten times as a refresher course.” She jumped down, sinking into the mud. A surge of energy shot up from the mud and her feet tingled. She jumped.
“What happened?” he asked.
“Nothing.” Juliette wished she could tell Victor about it, but knew that magic had to remain secret.
Juliette looked at her reflection below as she climbed to another mangrove root. She didn’t look like the other telenovela actresses. Even in her reflection, the long scar on her forearm arm was obvious. Her brown skin danced in the shallow water. She jumped down from the twisted roots and splashed with each step, hoping to get rid of the tingling sensation. She worried about her aunt’s failing health, worried about Victor leaving for college soon, and worried about deciding whether to be a witch. Worrying about her new career as a telenovela actress fit in perfectly. All this craziness was her life now.
Juliette caught a quick look at Victor’s abs when he lifted his shirt to wipe the sweat off his face. She dared to look up and met Victor’s eyes. The uncomfortable millisecond of being caught made her respond with, “Have you been working out?” She felt like she died a little inside for that stupid comment.
“Can you tell?” He flashed Juliette his smile that used to make all the high school girls swoon—dimples and all.
She shook her head and walked ahead, looking back at Victor over her shoulders. She remembered their quick kiss from two months ago. It tasted like strawberries. Victor almost ran out of the room afterwards. Juliette pulled out her new strawberry lip balm and made a quick two-lap circuit around her lips.
She had too much going on and falling in love with her best friend was a bad idea—a stupid idea. She smiled as she remembered their vow to never lie to each other. That was part of their corny friendship club they started in elementary school. They were the only members.
“I mean it looks good, I guess—if that’s what you’re going for,” she said. Why did she say that? She wanted to say it more like Dara. Instead, she sounded like a gawking teen, which she was, but still…
They sloshed through the mud and then stopped for a quick water break again. They both eyed each other silently as they drank from their metal containers, ice clanging.

5 Must Haves for Readers
5 Must Haves for Readers by Isabelle Hardesty
Reading is a pleasure that we can sometimes take for granted. Stop. Let’s make sure you’ve got some creature comforts to make reading pure joy.
Slow down. What will you be having to drink? Take a few minutes and prepare your drink of choice. It will be worth the wait.
Pillows can make all the difference for comfort. Throw a bunch of pillows around you to get extra cozy. Perfect for the plot twists coming your way.
Are you reading a tear jerker? Have tissue nearby. It’s good to have a good cry, now and then.
What time is your perfect time to read? Don’t fight it. Find the time that works best for you and celebrate it with a great book. You’ll have the energy to read for as long as you feel.
And finally, lighting can make reading a joy or chore. Be sure your lighting works for your print or ebook.
The Takeaway…
Some people find they don’t read as much as they used to. Maybe it’s the time of day they read. Or for some, it’s just about changing the lighting. Find what works for you and enjoy reading!

5 Top Supernaturals We Love to Read About
Okay, let’s be real. We love to read about supernaturals. Why? Because, at least for me, they are a fun escape into a world that’s interesting and filled with surprises.
Some readers love zombies, others swoon for vampires. But which supernaturals do you love to read about?
Here are my top 5 supernaturals:
Witches ~ Yes, I write about witches, so I love to read about witches, too! The Witch of Belle Fleur is being published by Month9Books and available for pre-order soon. Witches are fascinating and they can be more realistic than supernatural, which only makes them even more interesting to me.
Vampires ~ How can I not have vampires on this list? My current projects include a vampire novel and I love the drama, romance and history that surrounds vampires.
Shapeshifters ~ Shapeshifting is the power I would probably choose, if I had the chance. I wrote a trilogy called The Delacourt Saga, and this is about a half shapeshifter and half fairy.
Werewolves ~ They are like shapeshifters, but limited in power. They seem more tragic and limited than shapeshifters, at least to me. I love their passion and courage.
Fairies ~ Fairies, or the fae, can be both light and whimsical or the more serious and sorceress kind, which is what I favor. This makes me think of Bex, one of my favorite characters from The Delacourt Saga. She’s a pretty mean spirited fairy queen and may have her chance at redemption in an upcoming trilogy.
Hmm. What about you? Yes, I left off zombies. I’m just a wimp and can’t get my head around the fact they’re not real. I confess, that I love a good zombie story, now and then.
You can find me on social media by clicking the icons in the upper right-hand corner and let me know which are your favorites.
