An interview with author Sallyann Phillips
It is with great pleasure I present an interview with one of my top five favourite authors from 2015, Sallyann Phillips author of Angel’s Blood and Hybrid Justice, from the Angel’s Blood series.
About the author
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Swansea, South Wales, and still live in a little village just outside. I’ve been happily married for 25 years, am a mother of two, and a grandmother to a beautiful little girl.
What are your hobbies?
I read a substantial amount of books, which my local library can attest to, and my only other hobbies are, my writing, which now consists of two books that have been published, and walking my German shepherd / Husky Cain, who just happens to be named after one of my favourite TV programs main character.
Which writers inspire you?
Now that’s a tough one. I happen to have a little black book with my favourite authors, there are way too many to list them all, but a couple of my favourites are Laurell K. Hamilton, Christine Feehan, Sherillyn kenyon, and J. R. Ward. I bet you can see the connection there.
For your own reading, do you prefer e-books or paper/hard back books?
I have to admit to being a paperback lover. I have read a few on my kindle, but there’s something about turning paper pages, and the feel of holding a real book that a kindle just can’t match.
What are you reading at present?
At the moment I’m re-reading Christine Feehan’s Leopard people series. I’m currently working through Wild Rain.
What is your favourite book and why?
My Favourite is Asheron by Sherrily Kenyon. It’s one of her Dark Hunter series but one half is done of his old life, and the second of his new life. It wrenches the heart and really makes you feel his pain. I love a book that grabs you by the soul and shakes you up.
What is your favourite film/ series and why?
I don’t really have one in particular. I loved True Blood, all the NCIS/CSI detective series’, and I really enjoyed the Strike Back series. There doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern in what I like, and I’ve have been told I’m a little odd lol.
How do you relax?
Mostly with a book if I can find the time. I love a quiet house, a cup of coffee, and the ability to be transported somewhere else. Often at the expense of the heat of the coffee.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write because you have to not to make money, there’s not a lot in this game and there are thousands of others competing for that one in a million chance of being the next millionaire best seller. But, that said, don’t give up. If you feel the need to write then write.
About writing
What made you realise your calling as an author?
Honestly it’s something I always wanted to do, but life got in the way. Now that I don’t have young children I have more time, so it gave me the opportunity to do something that I never thought I’d get to.
Where do your ideas come from, what inspires you?
With me it’s my dreams. The Angel’s Blood series is based on a wolf that’s been in my recurring dreams since I was a child. There was one time when I lost my Grandfather, my wolf (as I like to think of her) changed into a woman and spoke to me. I didn’t understand the language she used, but I did feel a lot better the next day. I still see her in my dreams now.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
The first one almost two and a half years, and the second just under two years. I have a feeling book three will take me longer as I now have a Granddaughter that suck up a lot of my time.
Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I did try to follow a plot, but my characters altered it from the get go. If I try to corral them they get grumpy and don’t talk to me. There’s been many a time that I’ve got to the end of a chapter and thought “How did that happen?”
What is the hardest thing about writing?
The editing! Oh how I hate editing. I edited so many times that I was seeing what should have been in front of me not what was. That was the worst bit for me.
What is the easiest thing about writing?
Watching it play out in your head. I’ve always been one that when I read I see the movie in my head, so for me writing is the same. I wouldn’t say no to faster fingers though, just so I could keep up when getting it down on paper, or laptop.
Do you ever get writer’s Block and if so, how do you deal with it?
Long walks. Let the wind blow the cobwebs away, and let my mind wander. Chocolate when I return helps, and Cain just loves the time out, so all in all a win win situation.
How many books have you written, which is your favourite?
Only the two so far, and I just can’t pick a favourite for love nor money. In the first I enjoyed meeting the characters. In the second I enjoyed seeing the strength build, the connections made, and the way they fight to the last to protect one and other.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on the third of the series. Sometimes I think it will be the last one, and other times I think there are so many other places to go it won’t all fit in one book. I guess I’ll let them tell me
About the books
What genre are your books?
Urban Fantasy I’ve been told, maybe even a little YA.
What book titles have you released so far?
Angel’s Blood
Hybrid Justice
Tell us a little bit about the series.
The Angel’s Blood series is about Tavi. She’s a werewolf/vampire hybrid with a little bit of a twist. She’s been taught from a young age that Packs are to be avoided at all cost, and loses her mother when she’s very young. Her father brings her up, and he was Special Forces. He trains her to fight, and with her added something extra she’s a force to be reckoned with. After suddenly finding herself in a town with a Pack she realises they aren’t all bad, until she meets the very Pack her mother ran from. After hearing what has been going on she decides she’s going to do something about it, and she has the backing of the Pack right along with her, but that’s before trouble comes looking for her and hurts one of her innocent new packmates. That’s when all hell breaks loose and they find out Tavi isn’t quite what she seems.
Where can we buy them?
They are both available on…
Amazon.co.uk
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sallyann-Phillips/e/B00XKBQLU4/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1451430160&sr=8-1
Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00XKBQLU4
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
Tavi changes into a werewolf as well as grows the fangs of a vampire, but she has the eyes of something else that makes her unstoppable.
Who is your favourite character and why? (an unfair question I know)
Oh heavens lol! I love each and every one, but I do have a soft spot for Mack. He doesn’t feel like he belongs, and a few in the pack make him believe it, but Tavi identifies with him and you see him grow throughout the books. I have to say I’m proud of him, silly I know, but he’s almost like another child of my own J
In what formats is your book available?
They are both available in Paperback, for the die hards like me, as well as on kindle for the new upcoming generation.
When is your next book due for release?
That I don’t know yet, but you can bet it will be as soon as I can make it so.
Book titles and synopsis:
Angel’s Blood
Tavi Johns is a werewolf who’s never been part of a Pack, she’s only ever heard horror stories about their way of life from her mother who died when she was small.
When her human father died she thought she was alone in the world as she scrambled to stay hidden from any others of her own kind, and moved into a small town that unbeknown to her had a Pack of its own.
Can she trust them? Has she finally found a home? Can she fit in? And what will she do when the Alpha of the Pack from her mother’s past brings his violent way of life into her here and now?
Then she finds out she’s not exactly what she thought she was.
She’s more!
Hybrid Justice
Tavi is settling into the Camden Falls Pack relatively easily, but Zack being missing is a big problem. She hasn’t seen him, or heard from him, since the day he left.
Something is very definitely wrong!
She can feel it!
Finally, things start to happen when a messenger arrives with word from Zack, but is then attacked before they can get to her. What Tavi hears has her rage erupting, and she decides it’s way past time they went after him.
What will they be facing? And who?
Tavi doesn’t care. She’ll go through whoever she has to, to get her friend back.
And nobody is going to stand in her way!

Book review: The Roads of Luhonono: Legend of The East Road – by Hamilton Hill
Welcome back, it’s nice to see you here.
I have recently finished reading the first book in The Roads of Luhonono series, Legend of the East Road by the author Hamilton Hill. The book itself is classed as Middle grade fiction (8-12 year old) However, I have no shame in saying as an adult of thirty something I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The story follows the adventures of Magdalene, Peter, and Gimbo. What starts as a quest to spy on a princess becomes an engrossing, time-pressured mission to oppose the dark plans of an evil witch doctor known as Moja, who seeks to turn the Unseen into his own personal army of demons.
I really enjoyed this author’s writing style, it is very immersive and I was hooked from the first page. I enjoyed the interactions of the characters and the array of emotions they exhibit. I particularly liked how the author used traits associated with youth to drive the plot and further develop the characters. Disbelief becomes an open mind, friendly rivalry is a game of sport, and of course, there’s the childlike belief of near invincibility as they push forwards and do what they must. There is also an injection of humour, as expected form the exchange between young teenagers, there were parts in this book when I actually laughed out loud, but I won’t spoilt it by telling you why.
All in all a fantastic book that succeeds in having an appeal to both children and adults, I personally will be picking up the second book when it becomes available, and even reading this to my son when he is a little older.

Tales of Darrienia
I have added a new page to my website titled Tales of Darrienia.
Since first writing Darrienia I have been considering the notion of releasing a book of short stories relating to and around dreaming, the Oneirois, and Darrienia. I have already created a few short stories for this work, but I have decided to occasionally share a few of the shorter ones.
Currently only Sir Gallivant is there, this short rhyming tale was done as a bit of fun, but I like it so much I knew it just had to make the cut.
I hope you enjoy. Here’s the page

My TOP 5 authors of 2015
Hi all and Happy Holidays.
This year I have read a lot of books, and reviewed a number of them here on my blog. But out of the 40 odd books I have read this year, which are my favourite?
This year, I have decided to announce my top 5 favourite authors, I know it’s not as amazing as a book award, but these five authors deserve a special shout out for their fantastic stories. I have attached a link to the title, to direct you to my original reviews.
I must say, it was quite difficult to put them in order, but here goes;
At number 5, Marsha A Moore for her Witch’s Moonstone Locket

At number 4 David Parkland with Demon Bound

At number 3 Sallyann Phillips with Hybrid Justice, book 2 in the Angel’s Blood series (you may remember how much I enjoyed book one Angel’s Blood)

At number 2 Louise White with The Calling and Chasing the Demon in the Gateway Books series

And at number 1, my favourite author of 2015, Karen Gray with For King and Country and Chains of Blood and Steel from The Saga of Thistles and Roses: Volume 1 (The Warrior Queen)
This series has got to be my favourite to date, there is the perfect combination of magic, intrigue, conflict, and character development, not to mention the compelling plot. I am eagerly awaiting the release of book three to see what this promising author brings us next.

All of these authors are certainly very talented in their craft, and I would, without hesitation, recommend any of them.
All the best to all of you for 2016, join me next time for my review of
The Roads of Luhonono: Legend of The East Road (The Roads of Luhonono Series) by Hamilton Hill
Happy Holidays

Book Review: The Claws of Chaos by Philip J Bedingfield
The Claws of Chaos is a sci-fi novel based across an array of planets inhabited by a multitude of aliens. Gaston Schwenk, a human amidst the sea of aliens, wrongfully imprisoned for a crime of disastrous proportions seems to be the only hope that Lord King Azario has of saving his people. As if that wasn’t enough, an army, having destroyed all within their path to leave only dust in their wake, plan to mobilise and move their army into this universe and claim it for their own. Their only means to do so, the same artefact that Lord King Azario seeks so desperately.
A treasure hunting, clue solving tale which leads to the ancient relic known as the Claws of the Chaos. But who will get their first, and at what cost?
It has been some time since I have read a science fiction book which has kept me this entertained, not only by the plot, but wondering which of the characters will get their comeuppance. The vast array of characters creating the world are well designed with their own very distinct personalities, from the kind, open-minded Selene to the short-fused hateful Hosta. In fact, I don’t recall a single two-dimensional character, even those playing minor roles are well developed and portrayed. They even have their own unique sense of humours, something I rarely see done well in a book.
There were points in this story where I honestly didn’t know who to root for, Lord King Azario and his crew, or the abused, beaten, Gaston. Who did I side with in the end? Now that would be telling.
The author does a fantastic job in bringing the worlds to life, and since the quest requires the visiting of a few it is no small feat. He gives the reader enough information to bring the world to life, but doesn’t get carried away with information that serves no purpose to the reader, finding the perfect balance between what we need to know, and the cultural richness of the area.
The book is very plot and character driven and from about half way through it becomes near impossible to find a place to put it down for the night. It was one of those books where you think, just a few more pages, I need to know what happens next.
I personally will be keeping an eye out for future works by this author.

Merry Christmas is not offensive, but is less culturally aware
Good morning all.
Just a quick thought from my part. Lately I have seen so much about,
“You shouldn’t say Merry Christmas it’s offensive to those who don’t celebrate it”
So why does this particular phrase get people’s heckles up? Well it is simple. It is the use of the word offensive.
I’m not Christian, but I still wish people a merry Christmas, if someone wishes me a joyous Kwanzaa or happy Hanukkah, I reciprocate. I have friends all over the globe, real life ones, not just via social media. I speak with Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Pagans, Wiccans, Muslims and I have family who live and celebrate in Africa, and not once have any of them been offended by the words merry Christmas.
So what’s the big deal? It’s simple really, it’s all about the presentation. Instead of using a phrase like, “This year we are using Happy Holidays as it is more culturally aware”, people are simply told “Merry Christmas is offensive.” A great example, last year my home council prevented the use of Merry Christmas in the Christmas display. The official reason wasn’t to embrace the religions of other people, no, their official word on the topic was that Merry Christmas was offensive to other religions. Here in lies the problem. Wishing someone a Merry Christmas is not offensive, it is however less culturally aware. See the difference?
There is already enough conflict in the world and telling people that other religions find theirs ‘offensive’ only adds to the bad feelings. Where as saying we are a multicultural area and want to include other festivities in our greetings, would have less of a negative impact, if one at all.
I think we are taking this whole offensive thing to the extreme. All this serves to do is further divide people who, at the end of the day, are all part of the same race, Mankind.
Anyway, that’s my thoughts on it all.
Happy Holidays everyone.

Book review: Chains of Blood and Steel by Karen Gray
Chains of Blood and Steel is the second book in the Saga of Thistles and Roses by author Karen Gray. Those of you who follow me on Twitter will know that since reading the first book I have been looking forward to this one for some time. I can honestly say it did not disappoint.
Without spoiling too much of the first book for those who have yet to read it, this book follows on from the first plot. Mòrag continues to explore and develop her powers, yet the book’s real focus this time is on Ava. We learn a lot about her character and the circumstances surrounding her, including what it means for her to be the Spymaster’s daughter. Characters who played smaller roles in book one step forward into the light and further enhance the story, whilst all the time, their own experiences relate in some way to the events that are occurring.
Once again the author ensures you are invested in the characters, and surprisingly, when we meet a character I expected to like, I discovered he was actually a real arse. A nice surprise and a step away from the norm that most books seem to automatically default to.
Again the book was a fun and enticing read and we see so much growth in the characters. The more I read of this author, the more I want to. I can’t believe I have to wait until June now to find out what happens. The plot is interesting, and well woven with threads from sub-plots and backstories.
You can certainly bet that as soon as book three is available for pre-order I will be pressing that button.
Just on a slight tangent, I feel it is worth mentioning here that the first book, For King and Country (My review can be found here Review, For King and Country) made number one on the Amazon best sellers rank. So if you haven’t already picked up your copy, you should.
