AMY’S LAST EPISODE

Amy and I met when she hired me to be her book coach. I liked her right away. Amy is a direct, hard-working, clever, and very creative woman. Just my kinda-girl. I felt like we’d known each other forever. I went from being her book coach to her publisher when Amy became a really productive writer very quickly, and successfully, pretty much like she does everything in life.

I am so pleased that DPP (through Hawkshaw Press imprint) was able to publish her cozy mystery, JUST A HOUSECLEANER.

I have really enjoyed the book myself, and I know that Amy is working on the second in the series.

Amy’s mystery is a cozy, but also an “Amy cozy.” It’s a little salty, and it’s a little lusty. And that is how I experience Amy, and myself too, truth be told. Amy’s book hits all the right notes for me.

Amy is a hard-working entrepreneur too, and all successful authors are. You have to have that “door-to-door” and “all-hours-of-the-day” mindset in order to make it as an author today.

Selling books is hard work. But reading JUST A HOUSECLEANER is a pleasure.

Kindle Vella is a format where an author can serialize a novel. JUST A HOUSECLEANER is Amy Willard’s novel about a housecleaner named Patsy who solves a crime.

Anyone in the USA (currently it is only offered stateside) can read Amy’s book on Kindle Vella. And the first three episodes are free.

Q:

Do you find that your work as a translator influences your approach to writing original works? 

A:

I can safely say I learned how to write from translating other people’s work. Translation has been a school to me. In a way, it’s like those painters you see reproducing great works at art galleries. They’re learning through reproduction. Translation is like that too. Translation means taking a text in one language and rewriting it in another. But literary translation is about taking an author’s text in one language and transferring it to another language in that author’s style. So it’s reproduction of content and form, to the extent that that’s possible. You learn a great deal from doing that. And it was through translation that I finally acquired those other competencies I mentioned before—planning, discipline and patience. It’s great training for a writer.
