Book description:
‘No one’s ever come out of that house alive...’
What lurks behind the door of 8 Goldfern Road?
Are you brave enough to step inside?
By entering the sinister house, George and Glen become entangled in a dangerous battle of wills.
“The Spider” is a story of obsession, infidelity, and broken dreams.
This darkly humorous mystery will appeal to fantasy and romance readers as well as those who love to hate spiders!

What People Are Saying:
"...this story is spooky, mysterious, intriguing and thought-provoking. The characters are well-developed, realistic and believable, despite the fantasy /paranormal story line." ~ Julie Elizabeth Powell. [Full review: https://www.amazon.com/review/R1I06BL...]
"The paranormal thriller and suspense elements are also very well handled, propelling the story forward and adding shades of darkness and horror to the everyday trial and tribulations of the women and men caught up, sometimes more or less literally, in a spider’s web of deceit, danger, lust, and greed." ~ Maria Haskins [Full review: https://mariahaskins.wordpress.com/20...]
"I will never look at spiders the same after this fantastic read! ~ Sheri A. Wilkinson [Full review: https://www.amazon.com/review/R5U3ZB1...]
After reading this I will definitely think twice before squishing any more spiders as I don't want what happens in the book to happen to me......EVER! ~ Laura Smith [Full review: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-re...]
"The Spider", latest novel by Maria Savva, has to be one of my favourites by this talented author. I have enjoyed all of her work - novels and short stories - but this one , with its blend of paranormal horror and normality is a real page turner. ~ A. E. Thomas [Full review: https://aethomas2005.wordpress.com/20...]
This story shifts between the intertwining lives of friends with their own agendas, and a psychopathic man happy to take advantage of those friends. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale of what could happen when greed and self-interest drive your actions. So read this one, and the next time you find yourself getting a little greedy, remember The Spider. ~ Darcia Helle [Full review: http://quietfurybooks.com/blog/bookre...]

Some great new releases I've heard about
There have been lots of new books coming out lately, and I've been downloading them all onto my Kindle in the hope that I'll get a chance to read them!
Here are a few that I've heard about recently that I think will be awesome reads:
Blood in the Water, by Tim Baker

About the book:
Bob “Oscar” Oscarson thinks he may have struck it rich when he finds a 300-year-old Spanish coin while SCUBA diving.
When he and his partner, Nik, begin researching the coin, they learn it has a very mysterious history…one that may end up costing them their lives.
To be safe they enlist the help of Nik’s friend Ike – an ex-Navy SEAL with a penchant for bending the rules – to protect their interests.
Meanwhile, Flagler Beach P.I. Steve Salem and his partner Val Casey are investigating the disappearance of a retired architect from Rhode Island. The case goes from routine to deadly when they cross paths with a high-powered politician harboring a secret he’ll kill to protect.
They’re all about to learn that digging up the past can be deadly.
I've read a few of Tim Baker's books and always look forward to new releases by this author. I love his writing style. His stories are always full of suspense, humour, and intrigue. I've already started reading "Blood in the Water" and am enjoying it.

Sleeping With Earth, by Ben Ditmars

About the book:
Nature calls from the depths of itself, heating embers of a flame lost to global warming and withering romance. Hear voices find their truth as weeds tangle with free-verse and haiku poetry.
Ben Ditmars is a talented poet. He's contributed many poems to the Mind's Eye series of books that I'm involved in. His poetry is always passionate and from the heart. In this collection he has taken his inspiration from environmental issues.

The Devil You Know, by Terry Tyler

About the book:
Every serial killer is someone's friend, spouse, lover or child....
Young women are being murdered in the Lincolnshire town of Lyndford, where five people fear someone close to them might be the monster the police are searching for.
One of them is right.
Juliet sees an expert's profile of the average serial killer and realises that her abusive husband, Paul, ticks all the boxes.
Maisie thinks her mum's new boyfriend seems too good to be true. Is she the only person who can see through Gary's friendly, sensitive façade?
Tamsin is besotted with her office crush, Jake. Then love turns to suspicion...
Steve is used to his childhood friend, Dan, being a loud mouthed Lothario with little respect for the truth. But is a new influence in his life leading him down a more sinister path?
Dorothy's beloved son, Orlando, is keeping a secret from her—a chilling discovery forces her to confront her worst fears.
THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is a character-driven psychological drama that will keep you guessing until the very end.
I've read a few of Terry Tyler's books and always enjoy her stories. Her books are always full of twists and turns and true-to-life characters. This new one sounds like a great read.

The Quarantined City, by James Everington

About the book:
The Quarantined City: sealed off from the outside world, with only the sight of the ocean to remind its inhabitants of life beyond. No one knows why the city has been quarantined and conspiracy theories abound.
But for Fellows life continues largely as before. He walks the streets, hunts out rare books; the sun continues to shine and the gulls circle above.
There’s the small matter of the ghost haunting his house, but Fellows doesn’t let himself think of that.
But when he tracks down a story by the reclusive writer known as Boursier, his old certainties fade as he becomes aware that the secrets of the city, the ghostly child, and the quarantine itself, might be more connected than he thinks...
This book was originally released last year as a serial. I read the first three or four parts and really enjoyed it. The book has now been released as a complete novel and I'm looking forward to finding time to finish reading it. It's a very engrossing tale that keeps you guessing.

A pre-order that will be released on the 10th of December: Stuff the Turkey, by Tara Ford

About the book:
Susie Satchel has it all. A new job, her own flat and a long-term boyfriend. She’s even got a new hair-style and a pair of to-die-for boots to wear as the festive period approaches. She is going to live her dream this year and have the best Christmas ever, if it’s the last thing she does. Cosy, quiet and sparkly are her three favourite words for the holidays and she is determined to make sure that her Christmas is just that.
However, it seems that the great universe has other ideas for Susie as things don’t quite go as planned – starting with the work’s Christmas do which, to the amusement of others, turns into a farce at her expense.
Will Susie get through Christmas with a smile on her face or will her world, including the Christmas tree, come tumbling down around her?
I enjoyed Tara Ford's book Calling All Dentists. I like her writing style, which is full of humour and insightful observation. If you're looking for a festive read, I think this one will be good.

New poetry collection for pre-order from Ben Ditmars: Sleeping With Earth
Talented author Ben Ditmars lives and breathes poetry. He has been a regular contributor to the Mind's Eye series of anthologies and I'm always amazed at how quickly Ben can write his brilliant poems.
Ben's new collection of poetry, Sleeping With Earth is currently available for pre-order on Amazon Kindle (it will be published on September 29th). He's also working on a paperback that will be available at a later date.

Book description:
Nature calls from the depths of itself, heating embers of a flame lost to global warming and withering romance. Hear voices find their truth as weeds tangle with free-verse and haiku poetry.
Ben told me he's been working on this collection for some time, and says it's "Kind of been a dream to do a collection on environmental issues."

People Are Strange (Book 5 in the Mind's Eye Series) - Out Now!

I'm pleased to announce that book 5 in the Mind's Eye series has just been published on Amazon Kindle!
Book description:
We are more than what we say
And less than what we wish
Living together, separately,
United by division
Connected, disconnected
Oh, People Are Strange
*12 Stories and 7 poems, inspired by 19 photographs*

I have contributed 2 new short stories to the anthology, "Sand and Water" and "Somewhere In Time".
These two stories are among the 'strangest' I have ever written, which I think goes well with the title "People Are Strange" :)
As with all the books in the series, all the stories and poems in the anthology were inspired by photographs.
The photos for People Are Strange were provided by Martin David Porter and Helle Gade. The photo for the front cover is by Kim Stapf and there is a poem inspired by that photo also in the collection.
The cover design is by Julie Elizabeth Powell.
Other short stories in People Are Strange were contributed by Darcia Helle, J. Michael Radcliffe, Julie Elizabeth Powell (whose names you'll recognise from books 1-4 of the series). Two new writers joined us for People Are Strange: Maria Haskins and Thomma Lyn Grindstaff. I invited them because I love their writing!
The poems in this collection are by Helle Gade and Ben Ditmars.
I've read this book and have to say I think it's one of the best that we've published so far in the series. There's something magical about it. There are so many interesting stories and thought-provoking poems.

Book Review: Just Plain Weird, by Tom Upton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Definitely one of my favourite reads this year. Storytelling at its best. It's just so imaginative and yes, "weird"!
Teenager Travis leads quite a dull life until he meets the new neighbours, Eliza and her father Doc.
Travis and Eliza's first adventure together is read edge-of-your-seat stuff, and then the story just gets even more strange and engrossing.
This is a really entertaining mix of sci-fi, romance, adventure, and fun. It would make a great movie.
It's quite fast-paced with lots of interesting ideas, and plenty of twists and turns.
It could have done with a proofread, but I'm giving it five stars because it's such an amazing story. I loved the ending and the last line was just perfect.

Book Review: Terra Exitus, by Scott M. Liddell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Already a fan of Scott M. Liddell's writing having read his debut novel The Beatle Man, I was keen to read this new book. Terra Exitus is a brilliant novel. There are so many passages of prose that make you stop and think; insightful observations about life and human nature.
The main character heads to London alone after the death of his mother. He is totally disillusioned with the way his life has unfolded and the way people behave. One weekend he sets up a website just as a way to pass a few lonely hours and is surprised to find so many like-minded people agreeing with him about the state of the planet and wanting to escape.
The website is soon a great success and he is unable to keep up with the demands. He asks a friend for help and then finds himself thrown into the spotlight as the media try to find out more about his cause.
There are so many unexpected twists and turns in this book. The story is quite sad but it is also deep and I'm sure that many people will find it an irresistible read.
The characters are all very realistic. Although the main character seems to have given up on humanity, it is easy to like him and empathise with him.
A well written book that contains a message of profound wisdom.

Book Review: Tales From Alternate Earths (Anthology) - various authors

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I've never read these types of stories before but one of my favourite authors, Maria Haskins, has a story featured in it so I was eager to read it.
I admit to being a bit confused when I read the first story, wondering whether this was a book about different types of worlds as the title suggests "Alternate Earths", but when I got to the end of the story and the author's note explained the idea behind it, I realised what a brilliant tale it was. Very cleverly written and thought-provoking.
All the stories in this collection will make you wonder. The authors have imagined what our world would have been like had certain things happened or not happened. For example, if a meteorite had landed in a different place.
As with all anthologies, it is a bit of a mixed bag and there were stories that I enjoyed more than others because of the writing style and content. My favourites included "Stargazing on Oxford Street", "The Secret War", and "Tunguska". All the stories are well worth reading and will appeal to those who enjoy historical fiction as well as speculative fiction.

Book Review: Signal Failure, by David Wailing

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Emily is on her way home after a night out in London. She takes the Tube in the middle of the night. Her journey starts off quite normally but then things start to take a strange turn when the train stops between stations causing the passengers to panic. I found the descriptive quality of the writing enthralling. This short story is a prelude to the author's novel due to be released next year. As a stand alone short story it is thought provoking but leaves many questions unanswered. I think that was probably deliberate because after reading this story readers will be eager to fill in the gaps. It held my interest from the beginning and is definitely a page turner. In this story we follow Emily as she tries to make her way home. This is quite a creepy tale that touches on themes such as mind control and the paranormal. A well crafted prelude to what I expect will be a brilliant novel.
