In The Wake of Death – #BookReview

In The Wake Of Death  by Billy McLaughlin

“This book does have a fantastically unexpected twist that left me breathless!” – Emma Mitchell, The Little Book Worm.

Sometimes waking up is only the beginning…

He was left for dead on the side of the road. Now Marc Adams is awake and he can barely remember anything about his life before. All he knows is that his meddling sister has returned to his life, whilst his partner Joel is gone.

Marc is convinced that something has happened to Joel. Why won’t anybody believe him?

As he is pulled further into the pit of his subconscious, Marc begins to remember exactly what happened on the night of his accident.

Soon, he’ll be wishing he hadn’t woken up at all.

*******

Chilling.  If I had to describe this marvelous thriller in only one word, this is the one I would choose.  From the exceptionally descriptive language that draws the reader directly into the scene to the perspective of the powerfully emotive protagonist, the unknowns of the story as well as the twists the author introduces again and again brings the reader directly into the disorientation of his main character.

No spoilers here, not from this reviewer, but the direction in which my thoughts were leading me were utterly upended and left me in a frenzy of “OH I never saw that coming!” splendour.   This is such a masterfully crafted thriller, or one might say psychological thriller, or perhaps romance, or mystery or suspense drama, I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to feel the catapult send them tumbling!

Bravo Mr. McLaughlin!

Gairynzvl- The Dark One

.

The artwork that inspired Gairynzvl as a Dark One and his description, as taken from Dark Fey:  The Reviled.

He dwarfed her diminutive stature by at least fourteen inches and had a lithe, powerfully muscular physique.  His shoulder length hair was the color of shimmering ice, both white and silver.  He wore a full-length coat with burnished gold lacings and buttons, with armor-like plates embellishing his broad shoulders and with dark crimson and vibrant silver silk accentuating the deep lapels of the coat he wore open across his broad chest.  The multiple belts and chokers crisscrossing his close fitted vest, his pants and boots; all were black leather with similar burnished gold fittings and, although she never would have imagined a Dark One dressing so strikingly, he wore a double flounced cravat and golden choker with an enormous ruby glimmering from its heart.

His vast dragon-like pinions were deep black and blood-red, stretching fully twice his height in length, yet with vicious spines at each joint and tip they seemed even larger and were hideously frightful to behold.  His complexion was the unmistakable sallow pallor of the Reviled.

The Nevermore – #RomanticTuesday – #fairytale #Love #ShortFiction

nevermore

.

His whispers spoke to her in delicate drops, like water filling the recesses of her mind. Echoes of things half remembered, half heard. She listened in the deepest musings of slumber, his voice an ethereal song only her essence recalled.   He reached for her in the soft flickers of candlelight, like shadows scintillating and surrounding the periphery of her perception. A Dream dancing on the borderland of sight and reveries; unseen, unfelt, yet impossible to disregard.  She felt his presence as sweetly as the night caressing her cheek and as peacefully as the indigo-ebon shifting tides rocking the ocean of her consciousness.

Fleeting was his song, yet every night he sang as the galleon of restful musings sojourned across the nodding skies; his voice coaxing her into a realm of peaceful tantalization.   Ephemeral bliss painted in sighs and smiles; in the tenderest touch of his resplendent wings; in the feather-light brush of his lips upon rose-leaf complexion. Cajoling, persuading, entreating her to follow him into The Nevermore.

Nevermore. His Realm where all once held as treasure had slipped into forgotten lore.  His realm where he lingered, alone, trapped, waiting for the essence of one he had lost to be reborn to him and return into his embrace.  His realm, fallow and barren, without her.

Submerged – A #ShortStory #Collaboration – Finale

submerged2

.

We were parked in the midst of what appeared to be a giant junkyard. Row after row of wrecked cars of every color and model sat in various states of disrepair for as far as the eye could see.

Behind me, I heard the unmistakable crunch of gravel under boots but, before I could turn, I felt the barrel of a gun pressed between my shoulder blades. Instinctively, I put my hands in the air. Then a voice I recognized said: “We meet again.”

Julie smiled evilly. “You really are an idiot,” she said. “You actually thought I’d let you steal from my cousin?” My face must have revealed my shock because she followed that with an affirmation. “Yes Josh, Brad’s my cousin!” she spat. “If you were a little less into you and a little more into other people you probably would have remembered that.”

Brad punched me hard in the back of the head and I dropped to my knees. “If Mande wouldn’t have posted about you on Facebook, you’d be dead right now!” he said. “I’m tempted to do you anyway and take my chances. Put you in a trunk and put the car through the crusher. They’d never find you.”

Julie’s eyes were suddenly worried. “Brad, you promised me. No violence.”

“Where are the rocks?” he demanded and she ran to the car and returned with the bag. He was pressing the gun hard into the back of my head.

“I have them here,” she said.

“All of them?”

“Yes, they’re all here. Every one.”

He lowered his mouth to my ear and growled: “Steal from me again and I’ll kill you and there won’t be a body at your funeral. Are we clear?”

I nodded.

“ARE WE CLEAR?!”

“We’re clear, Brad,” I said. “We’re clear. I’ll never steal from you again.”

“Damn right,” he said. Then he cracked me in the skull with the pistol. It didn’t knock me unconscious but I wished it had. I lay in the gravel holding my head, blood running through my fingers. They walked away, got in their vehicles, and drove off.

Julie said: “So long, Romeo,” through her open window as she sped away throwing dust and rocks into my face.

I laid there for a long time before my vision had cleared enough to stand. Then I staggered about trying to find my balance. I leaned against an old truck and stuck my hands in my pockets. Then I smiled.

“Should have checked my pockets, Brad.” I said sifting emeralds through my fingers. “You really should have checked my pockets.”

The End!

Sweetest Longing – #RomanticTuesday #Love #Poetry

.

.Please Enhance Poem by Listening while Reading

.

Uncertain Fair,

How this Heart Longs for Thy Tender Touch!

Bejeweled Night in All her Splendour

Lays as fallow, barren dust

In comparison to Thy Most Gentle Caress!

UnSpoken Temptation,

How this Heart heaves in Sighs for Thy Lingering Gaze!

The Depths of Calypso’s Resplendent Abyss

Are but transitory shoal,

Beside the Majesty of Thy most Fleeting Glance!

Speak often,

Oh Most Protracted Sigh,

And tell of this poor Heart’s Sweet Longing,

Beguiled and Unbending

To the Ravages of Inopportune Time,

Hold Fast, Sweet Longing!

Hold Fast and Keep Thy Measure

Knowing This Hour of forlorn division

Is but one Ephemeral Moment,

Compared to the Eternity of Thy Love

Shared with Mine in

Sweetest Longing!
