REVIEW – Fuse 8 & The School Library Journal

After sitting down and thinking long and hard about it, I came to the shocking realization that Fajardo likes three-dimensional characters. That shouldn’t be all that shocking, actually. Lots of authors do. But consider the format here. We’re dealing with an epic quest graphic novel series. I mentioned Bone and Amulet earlier and if there’s one thing those stories have in common it’s bad guys that sulk about without so much as a sympathetic hair on their heads. Kid Beowulf is different.

That’s from Elizabeth Bird’s review of the book from her column Fuse 8 at The School Library Journal. It’s a really in-depth review, the sort an author craves because she takes her time with the text and touches on many of the themes and elements I was playing with. Check out the full review for great analysis!

INTERVIEW – Comic Strip of the Day

Lex_Justin_800wiMe, Justin Thompson, and the latest issue of the monthly PEANUTS comic book we worked on together.

I distinctly remember being 8 or 9 years old and visiting a family friend, and they pulled out a copy of Asterix the Legionary. It caught the sun as he was pulling it down from the shelf, and it changed my life. I said, “I want to learn how to draw like that.”

Justin: There was a glint?

Lex: There was a glint, yeah.

Justin: Wow.

Brian: Like Excalibur or something.

There’s lots more where that came from in this joint interview I did with cartoonists Justin (Mythtickle) Thompson and Brian (Mom’s Cancer) Fies.  Brian conducted the interview for Comic Strip of the Day and the three of us sat down for a fun discussion about our influences, techniques, and day jobs at the Schulz Studio.

Review – Kirkus

HrothgarHorse_SPOT

The first review for the newly colored and relaunched Kid Beowulf: The Blood-Bound Oath came in from Kirkus Review and they gave it glowing praise!

Told in richly imagined comic panels, this offering is visually arresting, with an array of eye-popping colors that positively demand attention from readers.

What Rick Riordan did for the Greek gods, Fajardo has done for “Beowulf”: magnificent.

I’m positively glowing myself! You can read the full review here.

Lookin’ For Lingonberries – Kickstarter

Beowulf’s call to adventure is a bowl of lingonberries and for the month of June it will be mine too as I launch a kickstarter to bring a new mobile game, Kid Beowulf: Lookin’ For Lingonberries to life!

Lingonberry_CVR

I’ve been developing this game for several months with game designer Jason Koukas and we are very close to finishing the game, we just need a little help getting it across the finish line and into your phone, so we’ve decided to do a kickstarter for the last leg of production.  Check out the details below!

FundingSlideThe kickstarter will run through the month of June, and if you’d like to see the game in action, hop on over to the kickstarter page and watch the video (you’ll get to see my cute dog, Loki – bonus!). Please help me spread the word as we try and reach our goal.

INTERVIEW – Storyforge Productions

StoryForge_Panel

Rummaging through the archives I found a write-up and interview from Storyforge Productions – a website dedicated to the craft of storytelling.  It was one of the more in-depth and thought-provoking pieces on KidB. so I thought I would re-post it here.

What makes the tale of Kid Beowulf so enthralling to its readers is how complex and developed its many characters are. The monsters of Kid Beowulf are not straight-up brutes. They all have feelings and motivations. They’re inherently connected to humanity, if only because they’re looking for their slayer to preserve both of them in the immortality of legend.

It’s a two-part write-up, Part One focused on storytelling while Part Two focused on self-publishing and promotion.
