All I want for the holidays…

It’s that time of the year again! The time of sweet, mushy, emotional, heart-warming holiday stories. Extasy books is doing a holiday countdown again this year, and I snagged the first spot. “A Bear’s Christmas” will be out December 1st on extasy’s website and a week later on Amazon.

It’s cold and wet outside today. Totally annoying! If you feel that way, too, here’s a little snippet to sweeten your day:

Pushing down a relieved sob, Shea hurried to the truck and got into the passenger seat. “Thank you so much. I thought I’d die out there.” The truck smelled like artificial cinnamon and the overwhelming scent of freshly cut pines. And coffee.

“Never been in Michigan before?” The man smiled as he turned the truck. “Where are you from? By the way, I’m Hank Loman.”

“Shea Everett.” He held his gaze pinned to a little air freshener in the shape of a Christmas tree that dangled from the rearview mirror. That must be the source of the cinnamon scent. Shea loved cinnamon, and the smell made his belly growl in hungry protest. “I’m from California.”

Hank whistled. “A long way from home. What are you doing here?” He cranked up the heat.

Shea shot him a grateful smile. Tugging off his gloves and rubbing his hands, Shea tried to get rid of the nasty prickles as feeling returned to his icy fingers. “Yeah. I…I’m searching for someone.”

“In Hazel Woods?” Hank pulled his bushy brows into a frown. “I’ve grown up in that town. Know almost everybody. Who are you looking for?”

Shea had to choose his next words wisely. Hank was human. Sniffing deeply, though, Shea detected the scent of a shifter clinging to his clothes. That could be a coincidence. “Do you know the Vasiliev family?”

“Sure. That family founded Hazel Woods back in the eighteenth century.” Hank grinned. “They’re good people. Very active in the community. Generous, too.”

Shea, slowly warming up in the heat of the truck, unzipped his heavy winter coat and loosened his scarf a little. “Could you…would you drive me to their house?” Shea had to take the risk. He had nowhere to go if the Vasilievs refused to take him in.

Hank looked wary. “How do you know them?” His gaze once again traveled down Shea’s body.

Pure instinct drove Shea to place his hand over the pouch of the sweater. He’d chosen the baggy garment hoping nobody would see. There was no way Hank, a human, would know his secret.

But Hank’s eyes widened in wonder. “Holy…you’re one of them!”

Shea felt the blood drain from his face. His heart beat faster in his chest as his whole body stiffened. He pressed his back against the passenger side door.

“Hey! No, it’s okay. Don’t worry,” Hank said hurriedly. “Crap. I’m messing this up.”

Shea swallowed thickly. He was trapped in a moving car, with no chance to flee if Hank meant him harm. “How…how do you…”

“I’m mated.” Hank shot him a quick look. “My Vivian’s a bear shifter. I won’t hurt you. Promise.”

Shea’s hand remained clenched over his belly. His other hand held onto the seat belt. Could he dare trust Hank? Sniffing, he once again caught a whiff of shifter. Hank’s mate?

Hank continued to babble as though nothing was wrong. “Is that why you want to visit Alpha Vasiliev? You’re a bear, too?”

“Alpha?” Shea wasn’t proud of his squeaky voice, but…alpha? “Are you talking about Viktor Vasiliev?”

“Yeah. My Vivian’s one of his trackers.” Hank sounded proud as punch. “We’ve got five kids!” He reached into the center console and grabbed his wallet. He flipped it open, handing it to Shea. Inside were two pictures of a happy family. “Two sets of twins. My Vivian is one hell of a woman. Swept me right off my feet all those years ago. I didn’t even care that she could turn into a bear when she told me about it.”

Shea stared at the pictures, but inside his mind was in turmoil. Viktor was not only an alpha, he was the alpha? Shea’s life had just become a whole lot more complicated.

Light and Dark News

Heya! I wish you all a wonderful Sunday. Yesterday evening was great for me. I went to a Blues concert and it was awesome. Even bought a fan shirt. If you’ve never heard of Thorbjorn Risager, look him up on youtube, because damn does that man have a healthy set of lungs.

Anyway, today I’m back in the writing cave. What’s going on, you want to know? I submitted Phil and Rick’s story to my publisher. Next are the edits, and hopefully I’ll be able to share a release date with you soon.

And because it’s Sunday, I’ll treat you to a tiny teaser. Enjoy!

Rick’s neighbor sat on a stool, staring into his wineglass with an almost pouty expression. Rick guessed he was in his late twenties or early thirties. He’d obviously dressed up to get laid, because his pants and shirt looked sprayed on and were so tight that Rick wondered if he could breathe at all.

Amused, and wondering if the cutie’s pout meant Tom had brushed him off, Rick flagged down his favorite bar owner. “We don’t need the beer.” He handed a couple of bills over the counter.

Tom smirked as he took them. “Going home with Mr. Roguish already, Detective? And here I thought you were more romantic.” Tom gave him an appreciative once-over.

Rick laughed. “Keep your pervy mind out of my bedroom, Tom. Trent is my partner at work, nothing more.”

“Sure, sweetie. Your secret is safe with me.”

Rick rolled his eyes. When he looked at the blond, he found him staring back with a frown. “Hi again.”

“Are you stalking me or something?” he asked sharply.

Rick snorted. “No need to worry. I’m a cop.” When the guy’s wary expression didn’t diminish, Rick sighed. “We met at the bakery because it’s close to home and my partner likes donuts. We bumped into each other again because we live in the same building. And no, I didn’t follow you here. I’m just having a beer.” He ran his gaze up and down the man’s slim body. The heated look Rick got in response verified his suspicion concerning the guy’s orientation. Rick was man enough to admit he was a bit flattered.

“I’m Rick, by the way.”

“Phil,” he almost purred. “Just because you’re a cop doesn’t mean you’re above stalking.”

Rick couldn’t stop himself. He winked at Phil. “True. I’ll see you around.” He turned and walked back to where Trent was waiting for him.

It’s Release Day!

I love release days, because another one of my babies leaves the nest and takes flight. Today it’s only a short story I wrote for GRL in Denver. Anyway, I’m proud of the story.

A Flying Rescue

Planned release date: January 20th

Pre-order link

Bravery isn’t a matter of size, but one of the heart.

Math geek Asa Tibbs is no wilting flower, despite being a butterfly shifter with a reputation for fragility. When he learns his mate has been kidnapped, nothing will stop from rushing to his mate’s rescue. Least of all any objections by the Wildcat Hills Pride, whom he’s conveniently neglected to seek permission from.

Xander Powell, alpha of the Pride, is chagrined beyond belief. Not only has he been captured by a gang of deer shifters—an insult to his masculine pride alone—but he’s become the new main attraction of a rinky dink circus? And he can’t even shift to get out of his situation, not without alerting humankind to the existence of shifters among them. What’s a lion to do?

Help arrives on colorful wings when the big beautiful butterfly that is Asa tumbles into Xander’s cell. Together, the two men escape the circus. But their journey home is just the beginning of the honeymoon from hell…and what they discover along the way will shake the foundations of the paranormal world.

Excerpt

If butterflies could squeak, Asa would’ve done so when something big and wet suddenly nudged his wing. In lieu of a functioning voice, he tried to flap his attacker in the face. Asa heard a quiet, weirdly amused-sounding chuffing noise.

Asa straightened his body on the shavings, then did a double take. The wet attacker was a big, dark pink nose. A lion’s nose.

Xander!

Without thinking twice, Asa shifted. Because he was such a tiny animal, it did take a bit longer for his body to grow and reshape than it did most other shifters.

Once he rose to his knees—still panting from the strain of shifting so fast, and feeling a little dizzy—he followed instinct and threw his arms around the big lion’s neck. Sighing, he nuzzled his face into the magnificent white-blond mane.

A male scent assaulted his senses. He groaned, fighting the need to swoon. For the first time in his life, Asa felt whole. Those mating pheromones were the shit.

He didn’t know what Xander looked like as a human. He knew nothing about the alpha apart from his name and what Kei, Xan’s foster son, had told him. It didn’t matter. Fate had made them for each other, so of course they were the perfect match.

God, I hope so. Please, don’t let him be an asshole.

A rough tongue licked him from collarbone to temple.

Asa giggled quietly and rubbed the back of his hand over his face. “Eww. I’m glad to get to know you, too. But no more kitty kisses, all right?” He kept his voice low. He didn’t want to alert anyone to his presence in case someone was roaming between the trailers.

Asa kissed Xander’s nose and grinned. Although little light came through the small gaps in the tarp, Asa could see well, thanks to his shifter genes.

“You have the most beautiful eyes,” he whispered. Maybe not the smartest thing to say. Asa should ask his mate to shift. Or he should fill him in on the non-existent escape plan.

Instead, he sat and stared into the most compelling eyes he’d ever seen. They were the brightest glacier bluish-green, with a milky white rim. Asa wondered if they stayed as pretty once Xander shifted.

As a deep rumbling purr emerged from Xander, a delighted shiver ran down Asa’s back. When Xan shoved his furry head into Asa’s chest, he squeaked lightly and tumbled onto his back. Next the big cat stepped over him, lowered his head, and licked across his chest.

“Stop it,” Asa whispered, barely suppressing his laughter. “Tickles! I have a weird, loud, snorting laugh. What if someone hears?”

Xander chuffed again before his body shook and rippled as the change took over.

Honestly, Asa had never seen someone shift so fast. On the other hand, Xander wasn’t an alpha because he could knit the warmest socks.

Asa’s temperature skyrocketed as soon as the fluffy, lethal cat turned into Mr. Tall, Icy, and Sexy. Suddenly the body pressing him into the scratchy shavings was very human and blessedly naked.

Damn, human Xander had the same eye color as his lion. Too bad some carny could check on Xan any second, or Asa would’ve wrapped himself around his mate like an octopus around its prey.

“You’re mine,” Xan said. He looked and sounded surprised, shocked even. His voice was low, deep, and so damn husky Asa started panting for breath—and scrabbling for functioning brain cells.

“No objections. But we should haul ass before you tap my ass. I mean, sleazy circus director, strange shifters with guns. This is not exactly a fitting romantic atmosphere for a claiming.”

Xander arched one white-blond brow.

“Fine. Before I tap your ass, if that’s what floats your boat.” He patted Xander’s chest, then moaned and placed his hands palms down on the wide expanse of lightly furred, golden skin stretching over the most droolworthy pectorals ever. Had he not been on his back already, he would’ve fallen to his knees and worshiped at the altar of Xander.

Hot damn.

Xander’s throaty laughter pulled Asa back into the present. Xan’s eyes twinkled, and the smile that curved his lips lifted him from the devastatingly handsome level to I want babies with you.

“Would you be so kind as to tell me your name, my mate? How you found me would be nice to know as well. Then we can ditch the circus life and find some safe place to…tap asses.” Xan winked.

Holiday Romance!

14-noelsfirstchristmas6x9

The best Christmas presents are those that touch the heart.

Noël White has it all. A successful advertising agency, a huge designer apartment, and enough money to live comfortably. But he’s a lonely man, and the coming holidays only show him what he’ll never have. Oliver, the man he secretly loves.

Oliver Toffey leads a simple life. Living with his little brother and working as a cleaner, he’s searching for the one guy who’d make the perfect husband. Although Oliver is mildly retarded, he doesn’t see it as a handicap on his way to happiness. When he meets a new client, Noël White, he falls head over heels for the lonely man who lives on takeout and always seems so sad.

Unceremoniously, Oliver takes charge of Noël’s apartment and his life, to show him the magic of Christmas and how much he loves Noël.

This sweet short is part of eXtasy books’ Stocking Stuffer Event! Beginning with December the 1st, there’ll be a new wonderful story each day leading to Christmas.
