Author Spotlight – Melissa Macfie

AuthorSpotlight

Author Spotlight

This week’s author spotlight shines on Melissa Macfie.

[image error]For most of her life, Melissa has pursued artistic endeavors such and drawing, painting, and sculpting. She holds a M.Ed. in English Education from the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University, and has spent the last eighteen years as a public school English teacher. She lives in New Jersey with her husband, Donald. Their children, Elizabeth and Donald, are grown and pursuing their own dreams.

Inspiration:

When she made the decision to begin writing, it was a foregone conclusion that the world Melissa would create would delve into fantasy and magical realism. Ever since she was a little girl, she was fascinated with the extraordinary in everyday life. Rainbows, birth, the affinity some seem to have with animals, to name a few—all scientifically explained, but yet there was still something more to each. Call it magic, miracle, or divine intervention; it is a mystery for which she doesn’t want or need a plausible explanation.  Melissa would much rather think of what we conceive as reality as layered, and much like the color spectrum, we, with our imperfect eyes, cannot see all. There may be multiple layers for all we know, but the most real is our everyday life. We know this reality all too well—struggling pay our bills, find a job we can at least tolerate, raise our kids, and find a healthy relationship. It’s easy to lose ourselves here, but there are glimpses and traces of something else, another layer. This is the mystery; in it lay coincidence, destiny, and purpose. This is what Melissa hopes to explore through imagination.

The Celtic Prophecy

Fate’s Hand: Book 1 of The Celtic Prophecy

[image error]She came to Salem to start a new life, but the gods have other plans.

The Coven, a group of Druid leaders initially tasked with protecting the balance, has been polluted by greed. Their leader, Cormac McBrehon covertly plans to steal the abilities of the next high priestess if only he could find her.

Alex Sinclair is weary after 600 years of searching for a legend, for that is who she must be. Having nothing but a vague reference from ancient prophecy and the cruel insistence of the gods, he has combed the centuries for her. Racing, with life or death hanging in the balance, he must find her first.

Brenawyn McAllister has come back to the fabled city of witches to the only family she has left: her grandmother. From the onset of her move, she is accosted and pursued, identified through obscure visions as a potential, though she knows nothing of magic. A devoted Catholic, Brenawyn questions her faith when too many events, irreconcilable with her own beliefs, refuse to be ignored.

Can Alex convince Brenawyn that she is the woman for whom he has been searching? Can he teach her to use her powers in time to defend against the Coven?

Reliquary’s Choice: Book 2 of The Celtic Prophecy

Brenawyn knows loss. Her mother, her father, her husband…she can’t let Alex die, too.[image error]

With the Coven closing in, Alex flees with Brenawyn to Tir-Na-Nog, even though he knows he is setting her on a path of no return. Brenawyn must say goodbye to her family forever and traverse time. She is the only one who can fulfill an ancient prophecy.

But what is Alex hiding? Has he condemned Brenawyn to serve the gods forever? Or will the depth of his sacrifice bring salvation to them both?

In Book Two of The Celtic Prophecy, Alex prepares Brenawyn to travel to ancient Scotland to claim her rightful place.

Oracle’s Curse: Book 3 of The Celtic Prophecy

[image error]Brenawyn has made impossible promises. She has agreed to become the Druid high priestess, she has agreed to restore the balance between worlds, she has promised to save Alexander from a century’s old curse, and to top it all off, the god Finvarra has just dropped her 600 years in past so that she can fulfill an ancient prophecy.

Now she must make impossible choices: between saving her lover or rescuing her best friend, between staying in the past or returning to the present. But most of all, she must choose who she will become.

Oracle’s Curse, the third book in The Celtic Prophecy series, takes the reader on a journey to a world of dark magic, a world where dangers abound and Brenawyn has no one to trust.

The Celtic Prophecy books are available on Amazon
Amergin’s Covenant: Book 4 of The Celtic Prophecy will be published in November 2018.

Author Spotlight – Claire Buss

AuthorSpotlight
Author Spotlight

[image error]Welcome back to another Author Spotlight! Today, I’d like to introduce you to Claire Buss.

Claire Buss is a science fiction, fantasy & contemporary writer and poet based in the UK. She wanted to be Lois Lane when she grew up but work experience at her local paper was eye-opening. Instead, Claire went on to work in a variety of admin roles for over a decade but never felt quite at home. An avid reader, baker and Pinterest addict Claire won second place in the Barking and Dagenham Pen to Print writing competition in 2015 with her debut novel, The Gaia Effect, setting her writing career in motion. Claire continues to write as much as possible and is completely addicted to cake.

Let’s take a look at her books.
The Gaia Effect

[image error]In City 42 Corporation look after you from cradle to grave. They protect you from the radiation outside the wall. They control the food, the water, the technology and most important of all, the continuation of the human race. Kira and Jed Jenkins were lucky enough to win Collection but when their friends start falling pregnant naturally, everything changes. How long has Corporation been lying to them? Is it really toxic outside the wall? As the group comes to terms with the changes in their lives they discover there is a much more powerful and ancient force at work, trying to bridge the gap between man and nature.

Get your copy of The Gaia Effect here.

The Rose Thief

[image error]Ned Spinks, Chief Thief-Catcher has a problem. Someone is stealing the Emperor’s roses. But that’s not the worst of it. In his infinite wisdom and grace, the Emperor magically imbued his red rose with love so if it was ever removed from the Imperial Rose Gardens then love will be lost, to everyone, forever. It’s up to Ned and his band of motley catchers to apprehend the thief and save the day. But the thief isn’t exactly who they seem to be, neither is the Emperor. Ned and his team will have to go on a quest defeating vampire mermaids, illusionists, estranged family members and an evil sorcerer in order to win the day. What could possibly go wrong?

Here’s a peek inside:

There was a bit of shoving and muttering as Ned pushed his way through the ranks. He didn’t have to look too hard to find the murder scene, all he had to do was follow the curious crowd. A fair number of the shifty looking men in nondescript clothing had come to make sure Two-Face Bob was actually dead. Certain people owed certain things and if his death were true, life had suddenly become a lot brighter. It only took one look to know for certain. One of Two-Face Bob’s faces stared lifelessly at the smog ridden skies above, both eyes missing. The other face, which incidentally remained on his head, attached to his body, had eyes popping, mouth open as if to scream, and a terrified look of fear and shock frozen in place. Someone had clearly taken a violent dislike to the man. Looking down at the separated visages of Two-Face Bob, Ned felt a flicker of unease surge in his stomach. It could be because he hadn’t eaten in the past twenty-four hours. Or it could be because Two-Face Bob had been to see him less than five minutes ago, claiming intel on the Rose Thief. Ned didn’t hold much weight with coincidences. The viciousness of the attack was unusual for the type of murder usually committed in the city of Roshaven. Put that together with Two-Face Bob’s extensive protection system of both magical and mundane origin and it was obvious.

‘He’s been ripped apart by a wraith,’ Ned muttered under his breath.

‘Care to comment, Spinks?’

Ned turned to his left, his heart sinking at the tall, willowy figure standing next to him. Mariah Neeps was… well she was a damn fine figure of a woman provided you never wanted to keep a shred of personal information to yourself. Neeps worked for The Daily Blag.

‘I’ll just elaborate on my Warlock theory then. Shouldn’t be too difficult. They had a ruckus with one up in Narborough a few months back.’ Neeps sucked the end of her recorder thoughtfully as she internally swept through the memorised headlines from her rival news bringer, The Chronicle.

‘They what?’ asked Ned.

But before Neeps could elaborate, Mrs Wicket barged her way through the crowd to stand in front of Ned. Her general shape and appearance were hard to identify thanks to the several flowing capes and feathered hats Mrs Wicket wore when she sallied forth. She was of the opinion that you can never have too much of a good thing and in her mind capes and feathered hats were the epitome of fashion. She was right, if she’d lived a hundred years ago. Still the capes and hats made her a local celebrity, the one person that simply everyone knew.

The bright orange feather on her highest hat was dangerously close to Ned’s eye. He attempted to sidle to the right slightly but was stopped by a podgy hand poking a sausage shaped finger hard into his chest.

‘What are you going to do about my safety, hmmmm?’ Mrs Wicket turned her head left and right, to make sure she had a suitable audience. Feathers whipped Ned in the face.

‘All citizens’ safety is a high priority Mrs Wicket, yourself included. My fellow catchers will be here shortly to seal the scene and a full report will be generated for the Emperor.’

May he live for ever and ever.’ The crowd chanted firmly, all eyes fixed on Ned.

With relief Ned saw, out of the corner of his eye, a bubble apparently floating aimlessly along. It was the scene sealer. No-one except thief-catchers would be able to pass through and anyone else in the way would be gently pushed out of the sealed zone. The residents of Black Narrows began grumbling but pushed backwards as the bubble descended. They’d all seen more than one scene sealer before. Whilst no-one had ever admitted to being trapped half in, half out, the rumour was that the fellow who lived down at the end, past our Marge’s boy’s girlfriend’s uncle’s, had indeed been spliced and had to stay that way for two weeks while a crime was solved. When he finally came out his left side was smaller than his right side and his fingernails had turned purple.

Author Spotlight – Brea Viragh

AuthorSpotlight
Author Spotlight

[image error]Welcome to another episode of Author Spotlight. Today, the spotlight shines on Brea Viragh.

Brea Viragh is a contemporary and paranormal romance writer based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. When she isn’t writing, her hobbies include binge-watching HGTV, scouring thrift shops for goodies, and maintaining her alpha status among her puppy and three cats.. Brea has spent most of her years traveling, collecting adventures, and attempting to find the perfect place to plant roots. All the while she has been writing. An avid people watcher and any-scrap-available note taker, she uses the world around her (and her own experiences) as fodder for her fiction projects. Life is a story. Live the life you want your audience to read.

Let’s take a look at her book, Fate Walks

[image error]In a world where magic is passed down along gender lines, what happens when a woman is born with her father’s magic

Underground DJ and staunch introvert Astix Cavaldi is a hit on the Chicago music scene. She’s also guilty of the unthinkable by simply being born. An outcast in magical society for her unprecedented power, Astix finds her solitude rudely interrupted when she receives a message from her long-estranged family. There is a rising swell of darkness in their world. Much as her family distrusts her magic, it may be the one thing they need to save them.

Leonidas Voltaire is the golden only child of the head of the community that patrols all magic users. He’s taken an instant liking to Astix when he witnesses the long-lost daughter confront her family and stand up to him right after. As Leo tracks her movements for his father, Astix must use her power to defeat the mother of darkness threatening them, as well as fight her distrust of all things male. Evil beckons, love tempts, and Astix would rather be anywhere else. Romantically pursued by a man who works for the one organization she’s running from is not exactly her fondest wish.

When Darkness kidnaps her sisters, she’ll need Leo’s love, and a little bit of magic, to save them all.

Here’s an EXCERPT:

He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt such an urgent stroke of lust. And that was just from a picture. This was real life. Real life was better, decidedly better. Then Astix stood, and Leo hurried after her before she had a chance to leave.

Her instincts shouldn’t have surprised him when she reflexively reached back to grab his wrist before it landed on her shoulder. Whirling around, she twisted to face him and stopped his hand just short of skin-to-skin contact.

“Who are you?” Her voice was a growl.

Leo hid a smile and kept silent, reversing their roles and breaking her hold. Harder than necessary, unfortunately. His palm pushed against her arm and Astix went flying before landing on her ass, skidding slightly along the driveway. She glanced down at the moisture seeping into the fabric of her pants. Stared at him. Back at the pants. Then him.

She sputtered an indignant response. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

This time he couldn’t help the grin. It split open his cheeks. She had a good voice. Smooth, low, rough around the edges. It conjured images of dark spaces, sultry piano and soul-shaking saxophone. Perfectly suited for her line of work.

Leo shook his head to clear it. “I’m sorry. I didn’t expect you to retaliate. You have quite a grip on you.” He held out a hand to help her rise.

Astix ignored the outstretched appendage and rose on shaky legs. “I can do it myself, thanks, Golden Boy.”

“Golden Boy?” Leo fingered a lock of his hair, the strands catching the fine mist of rain.

“Yeah, Golden Boy.” She jerked her chin away when he continued to stare at her. “What? Do you get off on scaring people half to death? Sneaking up on them without as much as a hello?”

He held his palms in front of him. She wasn’t what he’d expected and that had Leo reevaluating his approach. After reading her file, he might have taken her for cautious. Cool, with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Then he’d seen the flush on her cheeks and the glint of panic in her eyes. “Like I said, I’m sorry. I didn’t come here to fight. I just want to talk. To you.”

What she was, he decided as he watched her, was scared.

Her posture shifted from defensive to attack-mode in less time than it took to inhale. “Who are you?” she asked again, her voice rising an octave. “Answer me.”

“Okay, well, maybe I didn’t come for you. You just happened to be here. Still, I’d like to talk.”

She focused on his face, his eyes like two amber-laced citrines. This was a man built for intimidation. “I’m sure you realize you’re trespassing on private property.” She drew her jacket closer and pulled the ends in for protection against the chill.

The man smiled wider and her brain stuttered at the movement. “Not if I’m an invited guest. I have an appointment.” A small lie.

Astix took in the imposing set of his shoulders, the muscles bulging beneath his shirt. Probably hiding a set of abs she could scrub laundry on. Delicious, yes, but more than capable of forcing her to do whatever he wanted.

Author Spotlight – Erin Casey

AuthorSpotlight
Author Spotlight

[image error]For this week’s author spotlight, the light shines on Erin Casey.

Erin graduated from Cornell College in 2009 with degrees in English and Secondary Education. She decided to expand upon her teaching knowledge by leading writing sessions at first for the Iowa Writers’ House and now for The Writers’ Rooms.

She attended the Denver Publishing Institute in 2009 and has been a recruiter ever since. She is the Communications and Student Relationships Manager at The Iowa Writers’ House and one of two Directors of The Writers’ Rooms. She writes children’s poetry and stories for Whimsical Whiskers and volunteers at RARE, a raptor rescue center.

She’s also a devoted bird mom.

When not volunteering and working, she’s writing her LGBT YA fantasy story, posting urban and regular fantasy on Wattpad, and sharing her literary journey on Instagram.

She plans to release her first book, The Purple Door District, in December 2018.

Here’s a sneak peak into The Purple Door District
 [image error]

Bianca was supposed to attend art school in Chicago, not run for her life from Hunters. The only chance she has to survive is to find The Purple Door District, a safe haven for a parahuman like herself.

When she stumbles upon a magus named Gladus and a fellow avian named Carlos, she thinks she’s found safety. But the Hunters are relentless, as is the dark force driving them. Vampire, werewolf, avian, magus—It’s up to the parahumans of the Purple Door District of Chicago to put their differences aside to save Bianca and stop a dark threat from destroying their peaceful community.

Let’s take a look inside

“Riccardo called about a missing avian. Yeah…you have a description of her?”

Bianca didn’t open her eyes as the voice stirred her awake. She could still feel the car jostling beneath her. Her seatbelt was in place and the heat was on, so she hadn’t been moved. The taxi driver was speaking quietly, but her hearing was better than a human’s. She swallowed hard and hid her trembling hands in her pockets.

“Uh huh, that’s what I thought. No, Riccardo told me to watch out for a kid around this area. Said she was of interest…said he’d pay good. Uh huh.” He shifted and Bianca gave a little snore. “Yeah, looks like her. Yeah….yeah, okay, not far from the drop off point. Look, don’t get blood in my cab this time. Hard to explain that, okay? I’ll be there soon. Tell Riccardo he better have the money.”

Bianca’s heart skipped a beat as she heard the call end. Dear Mother…they’d found her again. She thought she’d been careful this time! It had been days since the last encounter, and she’d even traveled to a different city.

She swallowed a lump in her throat, every muscle sparking with stress. There was no way she was going to get out of this if she didn’t think fast. Would running help? Or was it better to fight her way out? Why couldn’t she be a weredog or werecat? They were stronger than werebirds! But no, she had wings, not teeth.

At least avians were faster.

She cracked open an eye and glanced outside. The lights blurred past, and she could see townhouses and apartment complexes on the side of the road. Shops and eateries were few and far between.

Bianca set her jaw and reached slowly towards her seatbelt. She clicked it free then froze, waiting. But the driver said nothing. He played a quiet song on the radio, which would have lulled her back to sleep if her heart hadn’t been jackhammering in her chest.

The taxi’s brakes squeaked as they pulled up to a red light. Bianca counted to three, grabbed the door, and shoved it open.

Author Spotlight – Matthew Olney

AuthorSpotlight

Author Spotlight

[image error]This week’s author spotlight is on Matthew Olney.

Matthew lives in Bristol in the South West of England with his wife Chloe. By day, he works as a copywriter for an international company, but at night he writes novels. He is the author of the epic Sundered Crown Saga and the Empowered Ones series.

The first book in the Empowered Ones series is The First Fear

The Supreme rules the world.

For centuries the Supreme has reigned with an iron fist. The people are slaves to[image error] her whim and at the mercy of her followers who revere her as their goddess. Using a supernatural ability, known as the ‘Power’ she is able to channel emotions and convert them into superhuman abilities.

Some Resist.

Not all live their lives in servitude. A few rare people also possess the Power and try to fight. These Empowered Ones are hunted mercilessly by the Supreme and her servants, for she knows the threat they pose to her will. None has dared to challenge her outright. That is until now.

Elian, a young boy living at the edge of the Imperium discovers he too possesses the Power with devastating consequences for both himself and the girl he loves. On the run, they encounter a ragtag band of resistance fighters called the Liberators. Among their ranks are others with the gift and their leader Vavius who believes that the key to overthrowing the Supreme lies in the ruins of the ravaged lands of the once mighty Kingdom of Aeranyth.

Pursued and hunted for their gifts by the sinister First Fear and the Hollowed, the world’s fate rests in the hands of the Empowered Ones.

The First Fear is available on Amazon

Sundered Crown Saga includes the first three books in the epic Sundered Crown Saga plus [image error]The Nightblade prequel novella.

The royal family of Delfinnia is assassinated, sparking a conflict that engulfs the realm – the War of the Six Claimants. Amongst the chaos, dark things are stirring: in the mountainous lands of Eclin, the ancient N’gist cult rises, setting its evil plans in motion. A diverse group of heroes oppose them: Luxon Edioz, the first wizard seen in an age; Ferran of Blackmoor, a legendary monster-killer; Sophia Cunning, a retired witch-hunter; and Kaiden, a noble knight of the Order of Niveren. The Sundered Crown Saga is a tale of magic, monsters and epic battles.
