Desi the Flameout
Here's the thing about Desi: she gets pooped fast. When I first entered her cage, she was jumping all over me. I could barely get her walking collar on. I thought, oh, this dog is gonna be a handful.
And she was. She walked fast, pulled on the leash, and tried to pounce on all other animals. I had a good workout just trying to restrain her. It's surprising how strong dogs can be.
Ten minutes later, Desi strolled like a geriatric, practically zonking out.
And she had runny poo, which was nearly im...

Melancholy, the Flame to My Moth

A while back, I read a blog post on divorce by Anna Spargo-Ryan. I wilted a little. I saw the silhouettes. I heard the shouts. When it was quiet, I heard the sighs. Most of all, I felt the sad.
Her writing has such feels. It’s easy to pound on the table, but hard to whisper heaviness. Most writers rely on the meaning of their words to create atmosphere. Anna does it even better - she also sets the mood through the cadence of her words. It sprints, ha...

Now Babbling at Bad Menagerie
Recently some writer friends invited me to join their group blog Bad Menagerie.
Writing as donkeh, I put up my first post today.
I'm not sure what the split will be between this blog and the group one. Maybe I'll keep more personal stuff here and put more general stuff there. I dunno. I guess I'll just let it evolve naturally.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. This past Sunday we volunteered for The Night of the Living Dog, a Halloween zombie party benefiting the Amanda Foundation (the rescue shelter we walk dogs for). Music played, booze flowed, and dogs preened for the costume contest. Fun, though I hurt my back again from lifting stuff.

Malala Yousafzai

At age 15, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the face by the Taliban while riding the bus from school. All because she was an activist for education of girls in her native Pakistan.
She didn't give up.
At age 16, she addressed the United Nations. Her poise, articulateness, and charisma would be impressive for anyone, but especially remarkable for someone that young. The entire speech is inspiring, but I especially love the force of her closing, which starts at...

Clyde and Lisi, Professional Lickers
This here is Clyde (left) and Lisi (right). Let them close to your face, and they'll lick it like a lollipop. Especially Lisi. This photo was taken right before my face was massively molested by their tongues. At first, Lisi was tentative going up and down steps. My partner had to carry her because she wouldn't go, but the dog quickly adjusted. Soon Lisi was hopping on and off ledges taller than herself. Showoff.
Both Clyde and Lisi are available to good homes!
