Publication Day! Playing by the Rules!

One of the happiest occasions for me has got to be publication day and today is one is of those occasions!

I'm thrilled to announce that Playing by the Rules is released today and published by HQ Digital (Harper Collins)  - which makes me doubly thrilled.

The Blurb On the 3rd of August, I died. Well, not literally, but it felt like my life was over. Melodramatic? Me? Just a teensy bit…
When workshy socialite Magenta Bright learns that inheritance comes with one horrific condition, she mentally kisses goodbye to the money. Get a job and keep it for a year? Not likely.

Naïve CEO Anthony Shearman is persuaded to hire her as his PA, and Magenta decides to stick it out, if only because of her sexy boss. But between the bitchy receptionist, Anthony’s beautiful fiancée and not having a clue how to be a career girl, Magenta barely makes it to the end of her first day.
So, just 364 to go then…

If you'd like to grab an e-book copy of Playing by the Rules you can do so here:  Amazon, Kobo, Nook, Google Books, it's also available on the Apple store and more ...

Yep, still excited!!

Book Review - My Sweet Revenge by Jane Fallon

My Sweet Revenge My Sweet Revenge by Jane Fallon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My Sweet Revenge was a real page turner and Jane Fallon is the queen of the plot twist. Having said that, I started out believing that I’d unravelled this plot just a few pages in – but how wrong was I?
A novel written in two parts, mostly from the first person point of view of the main character, Paula, this novel moves at a comfortable pace, one I enjoyed and loved getting stuck into. On the whole characters are well defined and developed and the dialogue is realistic and moves the story along nicely.
It’s a very ‘grown up’ book with adult issues that play on the emotions. I felt angry and upset at times but Fallon laces the story with humour and witty comebacks from the cast of characters and I laughed out loud at least once.
I would recommend this book to readers of general and women’s fiction looking for a good writer to entertain when you want to snuggle up with a book and a cup of tea.
A couple of things I wasn’t sure I liked was the way the protagonist speaks directly to you as a reader at times and brings you into a conversation – those were the points of the novel I felt were forced and didn’t quite flow for me. Also, I got a little confused with the way the ending was told - jumping to three months on to a character I always thought was surplus to the story and then jumping back to find out what happened in the main plot. it could be because this was a galley copy and needed to be fixed. But you will find that there is a satisfying end to a satisfying story. Grab a copy.

Hello 2017!

I'd like to say I'm starting 2017 with a bang but it's going to be more of a ping. But that doesn't mean that 2017 won't be great!

I've already started drafting my next novel, decided to take more exercise, going to drink more water and say a positive affirmation everyday. This is how I guarantee that I stay focussed, stay positive and get lots done without working myself into a frazzle.

I worked hard in 2016 and achieved a lot of personal as well as work related goals so I'm approaching the coming year in a similar way.

Just before Christmas I did a 30 day yoga camp (at home and followed it on YouTube - nothing fancy). With each day came a new affirmation and those really made me focus on what was important to me and set the framework for how I'd like to be in 2017.

So here I am - the 2017 version of Rosa Temple and I can't wait to get going ... but first, I'll put the kettle on, polish off the last few Xmas chocolates and join you on my next blog as I start my 2017 journey.

Happy New Year everyone!!

My Favourite Christmas Recipe & Why I Love It!

Christmas is synonymous with so many things for so many reasons for each of us. I could write a list of all my go to Christmas food, films, books and things to do but nothing beats my favourite Christmas recipe, which is mulled wine.I’m not sure if mulled wine is enjoyed around the world but in my little flat in West London, the month of December will see at least one saucepan of this lovely, warming drinking being made and devoured.I first got into making mulled wine the very first time I decided to throw a Christmas time party. I was living with my sister and a friend at the time and we invited a bunch of people round. Mulled wine is good drink to make for a group of people because it goes a long way, is inexpensive and can be as alcoholic as you want it to be or not.Since being married, my husband and I make mulled wine every year and one of the biggest reasons I love it is because of the memories it evokes every time I think about Christmas. My hubby and I tend to have a small gathering of friends drop in around Christmas time and they’ve come to expect the tradition of our mulled wine evening. So when I’m out buying the ingredients for mulled wine I’m always reminded of the great times we’ve had with friends and family, especially those we don’t get to see very often. For me, Christmas is a time for family and friends and I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love a warm glass of this delightful little drink. It works whether you’re eating something savoury or indulging in a mince pie or two (or three).Over the years, we’ve experimented with different recipes because there are so many ways to make it. The biggest cheat is to buy a box of mulled wine spice from the supermarket and follow the directions. Yes even a mulled wine connoisseur like me resorts to cheats every now and again. And why not?Where you mustn’t skimp is on the wine. Very often I’ll buy a cheaper wine to make it with but if you do that, just make sure it has a full body to it – just my little tip!

So now onto a starter mulled wine recipe:Ingredients1 bottle red wine 60g/2oz demerara sugar 1 cinnamon stick grated nutmeg 1 orange, halved or slices1 dried bay leaf 60ml/2fl oz brandy/spirit of your choice amount of your choice :) MethodPut the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bayleaf and the spices.Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste.Off the heat, stir in the brandy if you are using it.Strain into heatproof glasses and serve.Remember you can modify as much as you like and please feel free to experiment – I certainly do!.[image error]

ENJOY!

A Chilled Christmas

I've been patting myself on the back since completing the first in my three book Magenta Bright series. In case you didn't know, Magenta is the heroine of my up-coming romantic comedy.

The first book is called Magenta Bright: A Year In The Life and it's all about Magenta having to fulfil her grandmother's dying wish in order to get her hands on a quarter of a million pounds! Well that's the 'in a nutshell version' you'll learn more about Magenta in the new year so watch this space ...

I had so much fun writing this story. It started off as one idea and sort of developed into a whole other story; one I'm very happy with and can't wait to share with you.

Of course, now book two and three have to be completed. But, at the moment, I'm taking it easy for a while and preparing myself to get back into story telling mode. I've been enjoying all the lovely reviews that have been coming in for my other books and I'm catching up on my mile long reading list. In other words I'm chilling.

Let's face it, it's not long until Christmas and I want to enjoy it with my family before the world of Magenta Bright takes over.

How are you spending the run up to Christmas? Will you take it in your stride? Panic? Or is it just another day?

As for me, I'm looking forward to a chilled Christmas!

My Ideal Christmas

Originally posted on Hello Chick Lit on 24th October 2016

For the first time ever, I wrote a Christmas book of my own. Usually when I’ve written Christmas stories it was for a ghostwriting job I was being paid to do. And, because I have to follow an outline for the story, I just wrote on auto-pilot and it really didn’t register with me that I was writing about Christmas in the late summer or early autumn. I was just going through the motions and getting paid for a job.In reality I’m just not one for getting Christmassy until right on top of Christmas day itself!Seriously, I normally buy Christmas presents, decorate the tree and the house just a week before the big day. I know a lot of you will think I’m cutting it a bit fine but I’ve always been like that – compacting all the festivities into a small time frame rather than let Christmas take over a whole month or more. In fact you wouldn’t catch me going near a mince pie before December 20th – crazy right? But this year, with just over three months to go until one of the best holidays in the year, Christmas feels like it’s just days away to me this time around. My Christmas build up has started now and I’ve already got my eye on my favourite Christmas sweater, even though it’s still quite warm here in London. And the reason I’m getting in the mood for the holidays is because I spent most of my year creating my first Christmas novel and it’s all I’ve talked about, dreamt about and thought about for months! With that in mind I started thinking about what makes Christmas special for me – apart from the book :)Mainly it’s the idea of seeing family I don’t get to see very often because we all have such busy lives. People make more of an effort for a get together – which is fantastic. My ideal Christmas looks something like this:Watching all my favourite films with a cosy blanket and a warm drink. Some of my favourites include: Meet Me In St Louis and It’s A Wonderful Life.Getting stuck into an equally snuggly Christmas story in the evening. I like to pull out a classic some years like, Little Women or A Christmas Carol.Look around my living room and bedroom, wondering how I can spruce it up or do something different with it. Some years it meant new cushions, a sparkly quilt over, sometimes just some scented candles did the trick. I mean apart from having a huge tree in your living room, I always think something more than the usual is needed. On the day itself, I traditionally get out my favourite music ie jazz collections of all the Christmas carols and Christmas songs I know and love, then I turn up the music while I’m cooking and sing along. Loud. If I’m annoying people I just don’t care – it’s Christmas.I have also been known to over indulge on the food and drink and I use the fact that it’s Christmas as an excuse. And who knows, if I publish a Christmas book next year, I might make getting into the spirit of Christmas sooner rather than later a habit! I’m enjoying it so far.

Mr Perfect V The Perfect Christmas

Originally posted on Rachel's Random Reads on 27th October 2016

When I told a friend of mine that I had written a novel called, Single by Christmas, she asked if I didn’t mean, ‘Married’ by Christmas. After all, she told me over the phone, isn’t that what happens with heroines in the type of book you write?Well I had to point out to her that sometimes genres can be turned on their heads and for all she knew my heroine might just be married by Christmas because I’d managed to weave it into the story by way of a massive plot twist – the title might be red herring I told her. After hanging up, I thought a lot about what she said. Chick Lit novels and the type of romantic comedy that I love to write usually call for a Happy Ever After, don’t they? But that made me wonder, should a woman go all out to find the perfect man in time for a big holiday like Christmas, in the tradition of true love, or does she forget about men and try for the kind of Christmas that everyone loved once upon a time – the Christmas that’s all about family and friends. If you’re happily in a relationship then this won’t really apply to you, but I have a few single girlfriends who are not relishing another holiday season without the arms of a hunky guy wrapped around them. It’s not as if I don’t get that, but why put yourself under so much pressure when it is only one day after all? Somehow the true meaning of Christmas gets lost if all the single women are going Bridget Jones crazy and singing, “All by Myself” just because there isn’t a man around.Instead, I say, down with love (or at least searching for it for a while) and get out your old turkey baking tray, Christmas cake recipes and invite family and friends over on Christmas day, instead. It’s the perfect time of year to catch up on old friends and people you haven’t seen in a while. So why not throw a party? I remember moving to a new flat some time ago and when it came to Christmas I decided I’d invite lots of people around. I threw an open house party; cooked a big pot of chilli, a big one of mulled wine (which got topped up frequently) and opened my doors from the afternoon onwards. The idea was that people would come and leave after a while making room for the next bunch of people who came in. Trouble was, it was such a success, no one left and my poor little flat was bursting at the seams. But it was a great Christmas party and one I’d love to capture the spirit of again.Mr Perfect or no Mr Perfect, you can still have a good time. This year, I will be doing what I love to do best at Christmas time; every evening I get cosy on the sofa, lights on the tree twinkling and I indulge in a slushy film on the television. Then to top it all, on the day, I go crazy in the kitchen, whipping up a load of food for the family. Later I’ll be lying on the sofa in a daze while keeping a watchful eye on the Ferrero Rocher, hoping the rest of the family don’t eat them all before I have space.Sounds pretty indulgent but that’s a Merry Christmas for me and I’m pretty sure that instead of trying to find Mr Perfect in time for Christmas, you’d have a great time with the people currently in your life and who already love you loads!

Book Review - A Year And A Day

A Year and a Day A Year and a Day by Isabelle Broom
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I wanted to read this book based on the description, I wasn't familiar with the author and read this copy for NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sadly the style of writing was not for me. The pace was slow and I found myself skimming through chunks of texts which only seemed to repeat the characters' emotions or state of mind but in a different location in Prague.

The premise was good but I was disappointed by the story telling. While the author uses POV with intelligence and consistency, I really couldn't care less about any of the characters, even though they all went on a journey of self realisation. I had lost interest in them by a third of the way through. I think the main reason I read until the end was because I'd guessed one of the plot lines and wanted to see if I was correct. I was. In fact I'd guessed the ending to the story of all the characters.

Broom writes with heart on the subjects covered and I'm pretty sure that will help sell this book to a large number of readers of this type of women's fiction.
