Weekly Roundup: March 28, 2025
End of March, here we are. This has been one of the busiest and most stressful months of my life. April will also be hectic, but I have my eyes on the prize of downtime at the end of April. Of course, I’ve probably just jinxed myself.
Quote of the week:
“I dwell in possibility.” —Emily Dickinson
What I’m reading:
A Mother’s Guide to the Apocalypse by Hollie Overton. I met Hollie at an event years ago and loved her immediately. This book comes out in August and I am LOVING it. It’s about triplet sisters trying to figure out what happened to their mother (did she die? did she disappear?) after the Collapse. Very timely with the apocalyptic vibes in the air right now.
What I’m listening to:
Rabbit Moon by Jennifer Haigh. This one comes out on Tuesday and I’m really liking it. I’ve been doing more fiction on audio lately. It’s great on long runs.
What I’m watching:
White Lotus Season 3. Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke. And Surviving Black Hawk Down (omg so intense).
Writing news:
I am almost at the finish line for this round of edits on my 2026 novel, sending to my publisher next week. Ah! I’m planning to switch gears back to launch prep for Woman on the Verge.
I had a bookiversary this week! I wrote this book with two therapist-friends to support women going through pregnancy loss. I lost four babies before having my daughter and the experience of that changed me forever.

Interesting things I learned this week:

That’s enough to pay the annual salary of 112 public school teachers…EVERY DAYWhat I’m grateful for:
I did a 20-mile run this morning! One more 20-miler before I enter taper mode. The Boston Marathon is on April 21Yoga class. I’ve been getting out on Friday evenings thanks to a lovely babysitter and it has been SO GOOD for meThe puppies next door. My neighbor is fostering and they are just so adorable. I am considering adopting one but I know in my heart this would be crazy for me to do given everything else on my plateHealthy household after a scary trip to Urgent Care over the weekend. My daughter’s earrings got stuck in her ear lobes. I will not go into details but it was traumatic. She is fine now, thank goodnessFiguring out an ending I like for my new novel. Weekly Roundup: March 21, 2025
So, January felt like it was a year long, I’m pretty sure February didn’t even happen, and now it’s almost the end of March? I cannot keep up. I’m also in the midst of one of the most hectic times of my life (so many things all at once). They say time flies when you’re having fun, but it also seems to fly if you’re incredibly stressed out. Ha.
Quote of the week:
Not a quote, but a sweet little poem by Maia that I stumbled upon:
i hope
when you come home to yourself
there are flowers lining the front porch
that were left from all the women
you were before
What I’m reading:
Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi. I can’t remember how this book got in my queue, but I’m glad it did. Sometimes I like to read novels that I can relate to, and sometimes I like to read novels that take me somewhere totally new. This one is the latter. From the synopsis: One weekend. The elite underbelly of a Nigerian city. A party that goes awry. A tangled web of sex and lies and corruption that leaves no one unscathed. It’s so good.
What I’m listening to:
Counting Backwards by Jacqueline Friedland. This one is great on audio. I’m only an hour in, but really liking it.
What I’m watching:
White Lotus Season 3. Formula 1: Drive to Survive. And Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke.
Writing news:
My 2026 novel is due to my publisher in TEN DAYS. I am doing some editing and finessing right now. Very much looking forward to turning it in.

My daughter’s amazing trap did not catch the leprechaun, but he did leave us cookies—how nice!My nephew’s 9th birthday. He and my daughter are best buds. We love him so muchSuccessful 18-mile run with some speedwork mixed in. I’ve had a tough week and wasn’t sure how this would go, but I did itThe puppies next door. They’ve multiplied. Weekly Roundup: March 14, 2025
Happy Friday! I have to take my daughter for karate picture day in five minutes, so this will be a very quick roundup!
Quote of the week:
“Love has never been a popular movement and no one’s every wanted really to be free. The world is held together, really it is, held together, by the love and the passion of a very few people.” —James Baldwin
What I’m reading:
Crush by Ada Calhoun. I love her writing, generally. Just getting into this one.
What I’m listening to:
Just finished Entitled: How Male Privilege Hurts Women by Kate Manne. Very thought-provoking and maddening. I’ll start my next audiobook soon.
What I’m watching:
White Lotus Season 3. The one-episode-a-week thing makes me forget to watch it, but my friend reminded me last night. I finished Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix, about a health influencer gone wrong and am now watching the documentary related to the same story (The Search for Instagram’s Worst Con Artist). I’m also watching the new season of Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Love.
Writing news:
I’m working on edits to my 2026 novel, which is due to the publisher in about 2 weeks—ahhhhh!
Interesting things I learned this week:
Moms handle 79% of family’s daily demands, according to a study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family Astronomers have discovered that Saturn has a bunch of moons they didn’t know about. They had identified 146 previously and just spotted another 128A new survey of 2,000 parents found the average American parent spends 67 hours “in negotiation” with their child every year, striking an average of five bargains every single weekOnly 1 in 10 adults get enough fruits and vegetablesA four-year-old Wisconsin boy called the police on his mother because she ate his ice cream. The cops came to make sure all was ok. You can watch the kid make the case for why mother deserved punishment hereWeirdest thing I googled this week:
“non-browning banana.” I heard they were coming out with genetically modified non-browning bananas so had to look it up. From the Guardian: “The banana, developed by Tropic, a biotech company based in Norwich, is said to remain fresh and yellow for 12 hours after being peeled and is less susceptible to turning brown when bumped during harvesting and transportation.” It’s said this will help reduce food waste.
What I’m grateful for:
Rainy days. I’m ready for sun again, but it’s been nice to have some rain in CaliforniaMy neighbor’s foster puppies. They are adorable and I’m really hoping she keeps at least one of themA clean bill of health after my yearly physicalA great-feeling 18-mile long run this morning. Weekly Roundup: March 7, 2025
It’s been a PACKED week for me. As I said last week, working on back-to-back novels while living through the collapse of our democracy, having a full-time job, training for a marathon, and being a single mom is not something I would recommend. I am about to close up shop (aka my laptop) for the weekend though. Here’s to a restful weekend!
Quote of the week:
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” —Albert Camus
What I’m reading:
The Unmothers by Leslie J. Anderson. I can’t remember how this book got in my queue. It’s not a book I would usually read because it has a sort of horror/supernatural element, but I’m really liking it.
What I’m listening to:
Just finished Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger by Soraya Chemaly…and WOW. Such a good book. Everyone should read.
What I’m watching:
White Lotus Season 3. This one-episode-a-week thing is maddening! Must binge! I’ve also been into Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix, about a health influencer gone wrong (based on a true story).
Writing news:
I’m in the thick of edits on my 2026 novel, which is due to my publisher on April 1. Ah! I’m seeing advance copies of Woman on the Verge making the rounds on Instagram and that makes me so excited.
Interesting things I learned this week:
The only thing I noted this week was this: A group of zebras is called a dazzle.
It’s been another incredibly busy week.
Weirdest thing I googled this week:
“what do leprechauns eat?” My daughter is making her leprechaun trap, complete with enticing offerings, and she instructed me to perform this google search. The answer: “While there’s no definitive answer in folklore, leprechauns are often associated with a fondness for things like Lucky Charms (especially the marshmallows), chocolate coins, and anything green (but not vegetables), as well as items like potatoes and whiskey.”
What I’m grateful for:
A BEAUTIFUL 16-mile run this morning. One of the most gorgeous training runs of this cycle. It felt amazing. Photo belowTurning in a big project at work. It was a beastMaking progress on my book editsTime with my sweet boyfriend. I’m very luckyTwelve years with my kitties—celebrating their birthdays this month!

Weekly Roundup: February 28, 2025
It has been a week. The news cycle continues to be a horror show, so we all have this extra layer of angst when we were already angsty enough with our regular lives. This is a very strange time to be a human being. I’m lucky to have so many wonderful human beings in my life who keep me sane.
Quote of the week:
“Although I am typically a loner in daily life, my consciousness of belonging to the invisible community of those who strive for truth, beauty and justice has preserved me from feeling isolated.” —Albert Einstein
What I’m reading:
I’m just about to finish The Most by Jessica Anthony. It’s about a 1950s housewife who goes for a swim in her apartment complex’s pool and doesn’t want to get out. Such a weird and delightful little story.
What I’m listening to:
I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman. I’d never heard of this book before and am so glad I discovered it. It has “Handmaid’s Tale” and “Silo” vibes. Really good.
What I’m watching:
White Lotus Season 3. Loving it so far. I have a couple episodes left in the Senna limited series. It’s about Ayrton Senna, arguably one of the best F1 drivers of all time. He died in a crash in 1994.
Writing news:
I had some last-minute edits for Woman on the Verge, and just got a bunch of notes from my literary agent on my 2026 novel (which is due to my publisher in a month, so I have to get moving). Working on back-to-back novels while living through a constitutional crisis/democratic collapse, having a full-time job, training for a marathon, and being a single mom is not something I would recommend. It’s been a very hectic time.
Interesting things I learned this week:
44% of all single-family home purchases in 2023 were from private investors. I think it’s about time to eat the richFrom 2016-2021, we globally consumed over 75% of what we did for the entire 20th centuryPenicillin was first called “mold juice”All mammals get goosebumpsWhat I’m grateful for:
My daughter’s nightly song-and-dance performancesA half-marathon PR! I was hoping to PR the Ventura Half by a few minutes, but was feeling really off on race day. I managed an 8-second PR. I’ll take itA little getaway (to Ventura) with my boyfriend. We rarely get consecutive days together so this was niceA redemptive long run today. Every other week, I doubt my ability to run Boston in April, but I think I’ll make itMaking progress on a big work project that is taking up A LOT of timeMy literary agent, Margaret Riley King. She puts so much time into reading my work and gives such thorough and thoughtful feedback. I have some big edits ahead of me, but the book will be betterSnapshots:
From top to bottom: Post-half marathon selfie—very sweaty, wearing my daughter’s heart necklace she gave me for good luck; watching my dog sleep peacefully calms me on stressful work days; been chasing lots of trains lately; long runs during Cali winters are my favorite.

Weekly Roundup: February 21, 2025
Whew, made it to Friday. We had a 4-day weekend last weekend and I was still recovering from that most of this week. Any parent of a young child understands. The news cycle is extra exhausting. I hope we can all relax a little this weekend.
Quote of the week:
“To be true to myself, to be the person that was on the inside of me, and not play games. That’s what I’m trying to do mostly in the whole world, is to not bullshit myself and not bullshit anybody else.” —Janis Joplin
What I’m reading:
I finished This Is A Love Story by Jessica Soffer. It hit hard. Now I’m reading The Heart of Winter by Jonathan Evison, which has similar themes (about a couple as they near the end of their lives). Weirdly, both books have a main character named Abe too.

What I’m listening to:
They Came for the Schools: One Town’s Fight Over Race and Identity, and the New War for America’s Classrooms by Mike Hixenbaugh. This book is quite upsetting in many ways. School boards across the country are being overtaken by far-right conservatives with extreme agendas. It’s happening in my school district. Their playbook is astonishing.
What I’m watching:
I’m almost done with the docuseries American Murder: Gaby Petito and I really feel like young women should watch it to know what abuse and manipulation look like. On the surface, their relationship was so dreamy and perfect, but there was so much dysfunction that ultimately resulted in this horrific tragedy.
Writing news:
The advance copies for Woman on the Verge are here! They look beautiful and I’m so excited to start mailing them out. Release date is July 1!

Interesting things I learned this week:
The only thing that lodged in my brain this week was this: Astronomers say an asteroid has a 3.1 percent chance of hitting Earth in 2032. That’s the highest chance ever recorded for a space rock.
Weirdest thing I googled this week:
“trim guinea pig nails.” My house is a zoo. Roughly half my google searches are related to a pet.
What I’m grateful for:
Making it through this week. I have too much on my plate (it’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me) and the current news cycle is an extra layer of overwhelm. I had a few down days this past week but the clouds have lifted a bitA beach walk-and-talk with a friend yesterday, followed by a phone date with another friend. Conversation can be so rejuvenating. I also got to connect with another good friend over the long weekend while our daughters playedMy daughter won a creative writing contest for her grade at school. I got to see her stand up and read today and it was so heartwarmingBeautiful weather heading into the weekend. I’m running a half marathon on Sunday and it should be gorgeousA couple snapshots:
Evidence of how gorgeous it’s been here in southern California. The cloud pattern in the second photo looked like a heart to me. It was a day when I was feeling low and felt like nature was giving me a little hug.

Weekly Roundup: February 14, 2025
Happy Day of Love! I’ve never cared too much about Valentine’s Day, but I do like the idea of celebrating all forms of love, not just the love of romantic partners. I’m taking myself to yoga tonight for a little self-love. I hope you do something loving for yourself today too.
Quote of the week:
“You will never be able to experience everything. So, please, do poetical justice to your soul and simply experience yourself.” —Albert Camus
What I’m reading:
This Is A Love Story by Jessica Soffer. I’m reading it for Jo Piazza’s new book club and enjoying it so far!

What I’m listening to:
Democracy in Retrograde: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives by Sami Sage and Emily Amick. I started this on my run this morning. Very timely and helpful.

What I’m watching:
I started Kinda Pregnant, the new Amy Schumer movie on Netflix, but have been watching it in 10-minute increments. It’s been a busy week! I love her though. After hearing all the hype, I made a second attempt to get into Severance and failed miserably. The first episode puts me to sleep. I can’t get past it.
Writing news:
I have been doing some last-minute edits for Woman on the Verge and gearing up for release! The release date has been pushed back slightly to July 1!
Interesting things I learned this week:
Dr. Seuss secretly created what he called The Midnight Paintings, which explored ideas of isolation, anxiety, and depression. He requested they only be released after his death. You can see some hereKendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl show was America’s most watched event since THE MOON LANDING! What?!The average person blinks 14 to 17 times per minuteAllodoxaphobia is the fear of other people’s opinionsWhat I’m grateful for:
All the love in my life. My daughter, my pets, my fam, my girlfriends, my handsome guy… I’m a lucky girlA surprise visit from friends who are like family. They spoil my daughter and I so muchTrying aerial yoga. This has been something I’ve wanted to do for a few years and I finally pulled the trigger on a night my babysitter was here. It was so fun and I can’t wait to go backRain! We need it here. Thankful there were no major mudslidesAn all-clear after my breast MRI. I’m considered high risk so I have to get an MRI in addition to my mammogram. I’m glad to have the technology for peace of mindThe chameleon is still alive! Weekly Roundup: February 7, 2025
It was another chaotic and overwhelming week in Trump’s America. As Ezra Klein said a few days ago, this is all part of the strategy—“flood the zone,” per Steve Bannon. This administration is ugly and I fear what’s taking shape. I don’t know how anyone can think such hateful, dark rhetoric is a good thing. I’ll continue to speak my mind and root for love. It is the month of love, after all.
Quote of the week:
“My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. The effect you have on others’ lives is the highest expression of your own.” –Maya Angelou, Letter to My Daughter
What I’m reading:
Too Soon by Betty Shamieh. This is so good, and so timely as Trump is talking about occupying Gaza (which is absurd). It’s about three generations of Palestinian women and gives so much insight into life in exile and how that impacts identity.
What I’m listening to:
The Good Mother Myth: Unlearning Our Bad Ideas About How to Be a Good Mom by Nancy Reddy. Books like this are right up my alley, as I think modern motherhood is impossible and there is so much pressure on doing it “right.” This book hasn’t shed any new light on the topic for me, but it’s reinforced and validated lots of things in my brain.
What I’m watching:
My daughter and I saw Dogman in the theater last weekend and it was so cute. We went with a bunch of her old preschool friends and their families—such a fun night. My boyfriend and I watched Smile 2 because we both have an affinity for disturbing horror movies. It didn’t disappoint. We also started Senna, the limited series about the F1 driver Aryton Senna who died in a crash in 1994. It’s really well done. Oh, one more: I got sucked into the docuseries Dancing for the Devil: The 7M Tik Tok Cult. Fascinating and sad.
Writing news:
My agent said she started reading my 2026 novel and is “loving every minute,” which is what every author likes to hear. I should be getting advance copies of Woman on the Verge soon. The arrival of that shipment always makes the book release feel real.
Interesting things I learned this week:
Google searches for “tariffs” increased 2400% in the wake of Trump’s policies…which just tells me that many of the people who voted for him don’t know how tariffs workEremition is the act of gradually fading from the lives of others, not out of malice but a desire for solitude or renewal. I feel thisIf we held a minute of silence for every holocaust victim, we would be silent for 11 and a half years. This is chillingPhilocaly is a love of beauty, even in the smallest thingsWhat I’m grateful for:
A baby chameleon! Quite possibly the strangest thing I’ve ever received in the mail. So tiny and cool to watch. My daughter has been wanting one. My boyfriend built her an amazing cage and we finally got the creature. The cats were very enthralled, which caused me some concern, but they are now back to their disinterested selvesSweet texts from my daughter. She has a watch so she can communicate with us about pickups at the YMCA and whatnot. She’s started sending me little messages and I will save the screenshots foreverDinner with a good friend at a new-to-me Italian restaurant this week. It was delish and I just love my friendsRain! It’s not fun to run in it, but it’s so good for our state right nowSpeaking of running, I set a 5K PR (20 minutes flat!) in the middle of my workout on Wednesday. Was not expecting that!Snapshots:

Weekly Roundup: January 31, 2025
Omfg, we are finally at the end of January. What a month. Christmas feels like it was about a year ago. I read 15 books this month, really leaning into my chosen method of dissociation from reality. I don’t even know what to say anymore about what’s going on in our government. It’s all ugly. I am trying to focus on fostering and feeling love in my little corner of the universe. And I’ll keep writing and reading because both are exercises in empathy, which we clearly need more of. If your heart is heavy lately, I get it. I hope we can find lightness in small ways on a daily basis.
Quote of the week:
“At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.” —Frida Kahlo
What I’m reading:
I read Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino and, wow, what a book. So unique and rich. I was an emotional wreck by the end. I’m now reading Jane and Dan at the End of the World, and it might be my favorite Colleen Oakley book (I love her!).
What I’m listening to:
I just started Sarah Ruhl’s memoir, Smile. She’s an accomplished playwright and after reading this memoir, I’m going to order some of her plays to read. Beautiful writing.
What I’m watching:
My boyfriend and I watched Gladiator II last weekend, which was better than I was expecting. I also watched Will & Harper on Netflix this week, which should be required watching. I got teary-eyed at the end.
Writing news:
I’ve been writing a little poetry, but that’s about it. I’ll be in full launch mode for Woman on the Verge soon. My agent currently has a draft of my 2026 novel and I’m nervous/excited to see what she thinks.
Interesting things I learned this week:
I keep a list of random things in my Notes app throughout the week and I’ve added absolutely nothing in the past two weeks. My brain is on strike.
What I’m grateful for:
Yoga. I’ve been making a concerted effort to get on my mat more. Breath is magicPet cuddles. Truly a highlight of every dayCommunity in the midst of chaos. It’s easy to feel lonely when your government is acting in ways that are completely contrary to your values, but I know there are LOTS of people who feel like I do. We are not alone in our angstTreating myself to a much-needed massageSnapshots:
From top to bottom: Yoga session with my cat; a beautiful run; California winter views; my dog reminding me to rest; my little desk buddy (she sits on a pillow next to my laptop while I work. I’m so grateful to work from home).

Weekly Roundup: January 24, 2025
This week has been A LOT. I expected a firehose of news with Trump’s first days of office, but didn’t anticipate just how many totally upsetting things would happen right away. I am trying to figure how to stay informed and sane simultaneously. I suspect that will be the challenge of the next four years. I’m also going to make a concerted effort to focus on the good. There’s still so much good in this crazy world.
Quote of the week:
“The older you get…the deeper the love you need.” –Leonard Cohen
What I’m reading:
Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel. It’s a peek into the world of female boxing via the lives of different characters who are boxers. I love books that take me places I’ve never been.
What I’m listening to:
I binge-listened to For the Love of Men: From Toxic to a More Mindful Masculinity by Liz Plank and I am obsessed with this book. Every man and woman should read it. I wish these types of books were required reading in schools. I’m now listening to Sex and World Peace because Liz Plank referenced it in her book. It’s not as engaging as her book, but still interesting.
What I’m watching:
I finished Season 1 of No Good Deed on Netflix. Loved it. My boyfriend and I just finished Season 2 of Silo and cannot wait for the next season.
Writing news:
I’m still gazing lovingly at the book cover for Woman on the Verge on a daily basis. It’s so pretty. I’m super excited for the launch of this book. Lots of fun things in the works.
Interesting things I learned this week:
I was too stuck in shock and awe this week to learn anything.
What I’m grateful for:
My daughter’s weekend trip. Her dad took her up near Tahoe and she had a blast. She’s such a lucky kid and I’m so happy she has so many people who love herMy publisher (Lake Union). They’ve been so supportiveMy daughter’s in-home performance of songs from Legally Blonde. I think I have a musical theater kid on my hands and I’m loving itHomemade ice cream.
