Julie's Bipolar Disorder Books Available on the Kindle

Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder is available on the Kindle.

Here is some amazing news:

Amazon Now Selling More Kindle Books Than Print Books

Amazon began selling hardcover and paperback books in July 1995.

Twelve years later in November 2007, Amazon introduced the revolutionary Kindle and began selling Kindle books. By July 2010, Kindle book sales had surpassed hardcover book sales, and six months later, Kindle books overtook paperback books to become the most popular format on Amazon.com.

Today, less than four years after introducing Kindle books, Amazon.com customers are now purchasing more Kindle books than all print books – hardcover and paperback – combined.

I knew this was happening. And I love it! I know, many people still want books and that is fine, but the future is the future. Just think of the possibilities. You can read books you don't want anyone to see. No one to ask questions when you read books on bipolar disorder in the break room! ;) Even teenagers.

What do you think about this?

PS: My book Bipolar Happens: 35 Tips and Tricks to Manage Bipolar Disorder will be on the Kindle in the next few weeks. I will keep you posted!

Sleep Help for Anyone with Bipolar Disorder

Here are some helpful tips if you are having trouble sleeping.

1. Keep away from upsetting people. Sometimes this is easier than you think.

2. THINK of how something will affect your sleep way before you do it. If I stay at karaoke until midnight I will have trouble sleeping. Period. It's a trade off and it's not always fair! Oh well.

3. Take a sleep aid only when really needed. Benedryl, Vicodin, Klonopin, Ativan, Valium, etc. etc all have their place- but if you have to take one of these every night- you have a problem and need to talk to your doctor. I often write that I'm worried I'm dependent on sleep meds. It's so easy to do things that will affect sleep and then just think- oh, I can just take my sleep meds.

4. Turn off the tv and other media products- iPads, phones, etc. etc. . Meditate. Read or listen to a podcast.  This can really, really calm down the mind. The more light you have at night- the more stimulated you will be. Also, watching Netflix on demand at 11:00 PM is not a good idea!

5. Drink decaf when possible. I got used to the taste and like it a bit better now. A regular coffee has 250mg of caffeine as compared to 5 mg for decaf. That is a huge difference!

Just a few suggestions. They are all common sense- but so hard. I struggle with them constantly, but I won't stop. I want to sleep normally.

Bipolar Disorder Relationship Problems

On the list of the worst triggers for bipolar disorder mood swings- relationship troubles are right at the top for me.

I know I have to be careful – really careful in my choices, but a person just sometimes has to do something that they know may feel right even though it will end badly.

I always think, oh well, if I do get depressed, I can just handle it. Then when it happens I wonder how I could have been so DUMB.

Nothing is worth terrible depression. Nothing.

We all have to protect ourselves from bipolar disorder by watching who we let into our lives. It makes me so mad that I have to be so careful. There are a lot of fun people out there who add excitement to life, but if they add depression as well, it's just not worth it!

Oh well, I have my friends, my Lamictal ( generic name Lamotrigine)  and other medications, my family, my Health Cards, my strength. I can always get through the depression.

Funny Bipolar Disorder Mania Stories

When I get together with my friends who have bipolar disorder, we naturally talk about how rotten this illness is and how meds work but have side effects and the sleep issues are horrible, etc.

But we ALWAYS tell our mania stories. Here are a few great ones: (These are often the behaivors that lead to a diagnosis.)

I was really manic one night and was out drinking (of course) and couldn't find my lipstick. I went into the bar's bathroom and outlined my lips with a red Sharpie pen!

I thought I was going to be a model, so I flew to Japan using my college savings and went straight to a modeling agency in the Harajuku section of Tokyo. I got a job that week. I thought I was beautiful and I guess that I had so much confidence that I came across gorgeous on camera!

I left my parnter, got on a train from Seattle to L.A, got a China visa, got on a plane, went to Beijing, asked a taxi driver to take me to a Chinese school. I learned to speak darn good Mandarin Chinese in four weeks. I basically had a photographic memory. (For those of you who have heard me speak, you will know this is a true Julie story!)

Hey, we have to laugh at something! Laughing at our manic behaviors is pretty fun sometimes.

It Takes Longer to Worry About Something than to Do Something!

Remember:

You can unload a dishwasher in three minutes.

You can clean your room or vacuum your house in 30 minutes.

Get rid of a lot of email in one hour

Think of it in terms of watching television. It's so easy to sit in front of the TV for hours getting nothing done. I used to do that when I was depressed. Now I know that getting up and doing something for just 30 minutes can make a huge difference in my mood.
