Jane Against the World by Karen Blumenthal | Banned Book Project

From award-winning author Karen Blumenthal, Jane Against the World takes a deep and passionate look at the riveting history of the fight for reproductive rights in the United States—and how Roe v. Wade was only the beginning.
As the decision of Roe v. Wade continues to be challenged, the fight for reproductive rights is becoming more and more urgent—making Blumenthal’s eye-opening work even more crucial. Tracing the path to the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade and the continuing battle for women’s rights, Blumenthal examines, in a straightforward tone, the root causes of the current debate around abortion and repercussions that have affected generations of American women.
This revealing book is the perfect tool to facilitate difficult discussions and awareness of a topic that is rarely touched on in school but affects each and every young person. It’s also perfect for fans of Steve Sheinkin and Deborah Heiligman.
This journalistic look at the history of abortion and the landmark case of Roe v. Wade is an important and necessary book. — Macmillan Publishers

My Body My Choice by Robin Stevenson | Banned Book Project

Abortion is one of the most common of all medical procedures. But it is still stigmatized, and all too often people do not feel they can talk about their experiences. Making abortion illegal or hard to access doesn’t make it any less common; it just makes it dangerous. Around the world, tens of thousands of women die from unsafe abortions every year. People who support abortion rights have been fighting hard to create a world in which the right to access safe and legal abortion services is guaranteed. The opposition to this has been intense and sometimes violent, and victories have been hard-won.
The long fight for abortion rights is being picked up by a new generation of courageous, creative and passionate activists. This book is about the history, and the future, of that fight. –RobinStevenson.com

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman | Banned Book Project

Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…?
Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him.
They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…
HEARTSTOPPER is a serialized, ongoing webcomic that began on September 1st, 2016. Music from Another World by Robin Talley | Banned Book Project

It’s summer 1977 and closeted lesbian Tammy Larson can’t be herself anywhere. Not at her strict Christian high school, not at her conservative Orange County church, and certainly not at home, where her ultrareligious aunt relentlessly organizes antigay political campaigns. Tammy’s only outlet is writing secret letters in her diary to gay civil rights activist Harvey Milk…until she’s matched with a real-life pen pal who changes everything.
Sharon Hawkins bonds with Tammy over punk music and carefully shared secrets, and soon their letters become the one place she can be honest. The rest of her life in San Francisco is full of lies. The kind she tells for others—like helping her gay brother hide the truth from their mom—and the kind she tells herself. But as antigay fervor in America reaches a frightening new pitch, Sharon and Tammy must rely on their long-distance friendship to discover their deeply personal truths, what they’ll stand for…and who they’ll rise against.
A master of award-winning queer historical fiction, New York Times bestselling author Robin Talley once again brings to life with heart and vivid detail an emotionally captivating story about the lives of two teen girls living in an age when just being yourself was an incredible act of bravery. –Robintally.com

NaNoWriMo 2021 Week 1

This is the first year I’ve participated in NaNoWriMo, and I wish I had started sooner. The support from other writers, the drive to reach the 50k goal, and the prospects of seeing a project through to publication are intoxicating.
Here’s how my first week went.
Day 1, Monday, November 1, 2021I started my NaNoWriMo journey with a two-hour stream on twitch and had a whole eight people watch me. A personal best. I managed to complete 2,570 words and finish the first chapter of The Girl with the Demon Spider.
Day 2, Tuesday, November 2, 2021The stream went more smoothly today. At least, I think it did. I spoke more about the story and how it was progressing. I managed to rope ten viewers into watching me chatter on about synonyms, establishing your main character, Mahogany’s status quo, and story beats. Plus, world-building, character development, and unique voices. Fun times in Nerdville. By the end of the day, I have logged another 2,470 words bringing my total to 4,962.
Day 3, Wednesday, November 3, 2021Today was amazing! I pounded out 2,254 words in two hours! This brings my total so far to 7,226 words. Even the Twitch stream went swimmingly. I got my first non-family member follower. What what! This is the part of the story where our sleuth enters a new world. In The Girl with the Demon Spider, that world is one of crime-solving and breaking and entering. I also introduced a new character. Evelina is a fairy who worked at Hot Brews, the cafe across the street from the police station that Mahogany must break into to retrieve the murder weapon that is also a magical object.
Day 4, Thursday, November 4, 20212,474 words competed today! Chapter four is drafted. Additionally, two more people followed me on twitch bringing the total to six, only half of which are friends and family. The other three are strangers. Woot!
Today I continued to develop our characters. Mahogany, the MC, is somber and doesn’t smile a lot. Guy the ghost is talkative and chipper. Magdala is mysterious and a little aloof. She cares deeply about Mahogany but doesn’t show it in traditional ways.
Day 5, Friday, November 4, 2021The 1,086 words I got down today were less than I had wanted, but Fridays are busy, so just getting something down better than nothing. I worked n the first half of chapter five, which introduces the Pandemonium museum and Agalia, the curator. We also get to meet the new Pandemonium homicide detective, Teresa Sawyer who has just transferred up from Southern California.
Day 6, Saturday, November 5, 2021With less distraction today, I was able to complete the first draft of chapter five. The second half of the chapter introduces the subplot of Tony who will be Mahogany’s love interest, but they won’t get together yet. That will come much later in the series. Today I rounded out my word count by adding 1500 words.
Day 7, Sunday, November 6, 2021A measly 100 words today, but I ran around all day with the kiddo. I’m still ahead of the NaNoWriMo minimum of 11k per week with 12, 212 words. LEt’s see that I can manage in NaNoWriMo week two.

The Babysitters Coven by Kate Williams | Banned Book Project

Adventures in Babysitting meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer in this funny, action-packed novel about a coven of witchy babysitters who realize their calling to protect the innocent and save the world from an onslaught of evil.
Seventeen-year-old Esme Pearl has a babysitters club. She knows it’s kinda lame, but what else is she supposed to do? Get a job? Gross. Besides, Esme likes babysitting, and she’s good at it.
And lately, Esme needs all the cash she can get, because it seems like destruction follows her wherever she goes. Let’s just say she owes some people a new tree.
Enter Cassandra Heaven. She’s Instagram-model hot, dresses like she found her clothes in a dumpster, and has a rebellious streak as gnarly as the cafeteria food. So why is Cassandra willing to do anything, even take on a potty-training two-year-old, to join Esme’s babysitters club?
The answer lies in a mysterious note Cassandra’s mother left her: “Find the babysitters. Love, Mom.”
Turns out, Esme and Cassandra have more in common than they think, and they’re about to discover what being a babysitter really means: a heroic lineage of superpowers, magic rituals, and saving the innocent from a seriously terrifying evil. And all before the parents get home.

I’m Starting a Twitch Writing Stream!

https://www.twitch.tv/allthatglitters... an attempt to keep myself on track this NaNoWriMo season, I will stream my progress with a Twitch Writing Stream as I write the first draft of the Girl with the Demon Spider. I plan to stream Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. – Noon or until I hit 2k words starting November 1st.
If you’re participating this November in NaNoWriMo and would like some socially distanced writing company, I’m your gal.
If you aren’t ready to throw your hat into the 50k in the 30-days ring but are interested in how the process might go, I welcome you to fumble along with me.
If you know someone who might be interested in joining me live, send them my way.
Ok, let’s do this!
Twitch info: https://www.twitch.tv/lulutwolongtoes
My story, Old Fashioned, did not make it to the third round in NYCMidnight. The judges disqualified Old Fashioned because the special object, a sugar cube, was mentioned but did not appear directly in the story. However, I did receive great critiques from the judges. Better luck next time!

Dating and Sex: A Guide for the 21st Century Teen Boy by Andrew P. Miller| Banned Book Project

“There’s a good chance you’ve had the “sex talk” with your parents. Or not. Or learned about human reproduction in health class. Or maybe you’ve heard a lot about dating, sex, and relationships from friends, movies, and surfing online. So you are all set, right? Maybe…. But everything you think you know and everything you really want to know is inside this book.”
Written for teen boys, Dating and Sex provides them with the knowledge they need to understand dating, relationships, and sex. It goes beyond basic descriptions of biological processes with a progressive, practical approach that relies on secular ethics and emphasizes sexual health and personal responsibility.
The book addresses common questions like:
What’s a hook-up?
How do I know if someone likes me?
Can I masturbate too much?
How do I know if I am ready for sex?
How do I know what my sexual orientation is?
Why is it important to get and give consent?
How can I make a relationship last for more than a couple of days?
The perfect book for helping teen boys understand both themselves and the complexity of the sexual world around them. –Goodreads.com
Cheyenne, Wyoming 2021 – Conservative parents discovered the book along with several others on a Pride Month display at the Campbell County Public Library. Enraged parents took This Book is Gay, along with the other offending titles to the local police and filed an obscenity report. The police sided with the parent and the titles are now on trial in a Wyoming court. The Friends of the Library have since purchased several of the titles objected to and they are available on the library shelves.
