– EXCERPT –
While I was working backstage later that
evening, I heard a few new guests entering the premises. One was K.L., and the
other was Ella Green. Ella Green was well known for her publicity stunts and
her YouTube videos. Although I had never seen one, I was pretty sure she was
here to interview the band. As for K.L., he was here for the same reason he was
at the diner where we had lunch: to reel me into his world. I refused, knowing that
wouldn’t stop him from trying again.
“Frances, can you take Ms. Green and Mr.
James to the green room?” one roadie asked me. I threw the towel I was
haphazardly folding to the side, and I went to guide Ella and K.L. to the green
room.
When we got there Ben was celebrating
something, and he wanted me to hear it. He showed me the invitation that had
been waiting for them when they got here. It was for the American Music Awards
in November, and when I saw that he and the band were nominated for an award, I
was just as giddy with excitement as the whole lot of them. Ben and I hugged
and jumped up and down, squealing in excitement.
After we came back to our senses I said,
“Oh, guys Ella Green and K.L are here.” The sound of Ella’s name struck a fire
in Ben. Not a good fire either.
“Is something wrong?” I asked.
Ella was suddenly screaming at Ben. I
was so confused, and so when Ella kept yelling, I yelled over her.
“Shut up! What the hell is going on?” I
asked.
Ben waved his hand, signaling that I
should leave this alone and I ignored him.
“Don’t you know?” Ella said. “I wanted
to date the wonderful Ben Morrison, but he refused. He refused! Like, who refuses to date me? I’m Ella Green for Christ’s
sake, I’m the mother—”
“It’s time to shut up, Ella. I can see
your ego loud and clear.” She gasped at my comment, more enraged that I even
spoke to her during her outburst than the fact that my brother had refused her
invitation.
“Who are you? Like, what are you even
doing here? You were folding towels when I came in, you’re a little good for
nothing—”
It was a reflex, and I mean it when I
say this—but I punched her in the nose. Usually I’m pretty good at controlling
my anger, and other times I don’t realize how angry I am and my reflexes take over.
She was wailing like a child, and holding her head back as she stumbled around as
if my punch to her nose had debilitated her ability to maintain her balance.
“Dammit, Frances! Do you know who she
is?” Ben was yelling at me now, and I didn’t know how to react. He was rushing
to get towels and ice for Ella.
After a medic checked her nose and said
it was fine, she was escorted off the premises, all the while shouting about
how I was going to pay for this. I was like a child stuck in the time out
corner when Ben came back. My arms were wrapped around myself for safety, and I
hung my head in shame.
“What are you doing, Bea? Do you want to
get us into trouble? She’s a YouTube star. She could easily post a rant about
this and make it go viral overnight!”
It was time to prepare for the show, and
I tried to leave, except Ben wouldn’t stop yelling.
“Frances, if you keep screwing things up
the way you are, I’m going to regret ever bringing you on this tour! How can I
show the world how wonderful my sister is if she keeps acting like a whiny,
spoiled brat with an uncontrollable right hook?”
I could tell Everett was about to call
him out on his behavior, but I shot him a look that told him not to.
“I’m sorry, Ben, it won’t happen again.
I’ll go back to folding towels.” I had never been so isolated and demeaned in
my life. So much for sibling love.

It took only four months to bring the angels to their knees…
With a virus ravaging the fallen angels on earth, mankind’s symbol of love and hope is at risk of extinction.
Centuries ago, a group of angelic warriors known as The Fallen risked everything to save themselves and carve a future for their kind. Hope slips away as The Fallen and their kin are cut down by an ancient menace, LaMorte Nera—and no one saw it coming.
Only one immortal can save them, and only one mortal can stand in his way…
When Nephilim warrior Killian St. James sets out on a quest to find a cure, he and his blade-brothers discover nineteen-year-old Aubrey Carter—a human with a past as dark as it is mysterious—cowering in an abandoned house in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee. The corrupted races are chasing her, and Killian is determined to find out why…But neither he nor Aubrey are prepared for their attraction to one another, or for the frightening truths lurking in the shadows. The painful childhood memories Aubrey has buried hold precious answers. Answers that threaten to tear Killian’s world apart.
With her life hanging in the balance, Killian must choose between the future of The Fallen, and the human girl he’s pledged to protect.
Demons are rising, and this time they plan to win the war for dominion once and for all.

Killian stepped forward, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He still seemed so big to her. He still overwhelmed her. But he didn’t frighten her anymore.
“You look tired.” She fought the urge to lift her hand to touch his gorgeous face.
“I am,” he said, the corner of his lips turning up in a half smile.
“Oh.”
He stared down at her, his half smile slipping. A dizzying parade of emotions swirled through his eyes. She couldn’t read them all, but she understood enough. He felt as torn as she did.
“Will I remember you three years from now?” she whispered, her heart aching with the fear that she would forget him as she had so much else…and with fear that she would remember him. That she would survive this nightmare and he would haunt her for the rest of her days like so much else did.
“Do you want to remember me?” He took another step in her direction.
“I don’t know.” She frowned, confused. “You make me feel like maybe the world isn’t so bad. Like maybe I’m safe with you. I don’t think I want to forget that.”
Killian tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her cheek gently in one big hand. “You are safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you, Aubrey.”
She stared at him for a long, silent moment. He’d promised before that he wouldn’t hurt her, but even then an unspoken fear had stood between them like a wall. A little voice whispered that if she got too close, he would hurt her as badly as the things in her past hurt. That voice had stopped whispering when he’d kissed her today, and wasn’t that odd?
“You hurt me today.”
He bowed his head, letting his hand fall away from her face. “I’m sorry.”
Her heart ached a little at the agonized way he said it. As if it shamed him to know he’d hurt her. As if, maybe, he cared more than he should too.
“Why did you?” she asked, not accusing, but curious. She wanted to understand him. No, she needed to understand him on some level she couldn’t even explain to herself. “You wanted me, didn’t you?”
His gaze sought hers, honesty shining from his angel-bright eyes. “More than you know.”
Aubrey took a deep breath, letting her lungs fill with air even as her heart filled with his confession. And just as quickly, the buoyant feeling vanished. “It doesn’t change anything, though, does it?” she whispered.
“Do you want it to?”
She hesitated for a long moment, unsure. And then her shoulders slumped, the breath she’d taken expelling in a long sigh. “I’m sorry.”
Killian gave her a sad smile and reached for her again. He swept a finger beneath her eye, collecting the teardrop she hadn’t even realized had fallen. “No apologies,” he whispered, bringing his finger to his mouth. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and lapped that single bead of moisture from his fingertip. “You owe me nothing.”
If that was true, why did she feel like crying?

One night.
One stupid mistake.
Changes everything.
SAMMY STEVENS was tragically orphaned at the age of nine
and sent to live with a foster family in the town of Miakoda Falls.
She’s constantly bullied at school by the arrogant,
selfish, one and only… KAI JORDAN.
Kai is your typical entitled teen who’s on the verge of
attending a university and having everything he ever wanted handed to him.
But all that changes when he is involved in a car
accident after a night of partying…
He’s suddenly and painfully brought into the world of the
supernatural.
Kai turns to the last person he ever would’ve expected,
Sammy, as he struggles with his new identity and watches the people closest to
him move on. And he is forgotten.
As Kai and Sammy grow closer, Kai must figure out a way
to either fight to stay human or risk being stuck forever, as a prisoner of his
own body…
Excerpt
— My door swings open before I reach it and I smack into
a naked chest.
“Oh. Sorry.” My face heats up in embarrassment. Kai
smirks down at me and walks past. “Hey!
Where are you going?”
He doesn’t stop as he looks over his shoulder. “I heard
Ashlee leave.”
“Kai! Come back here!” I yell and follow after him down the
stairs and into the main hallway. “You can’t just walk around the house. What
if Ashlee comes home? She’s not going to knock; she’s just going to walk in.
This is her house. Besides, she said she would be right back.”
Kai stops so suddenly I nearly collide with him again.
“You worry too much, Sammy.” I narrow my eyes. He’s started calling me by my
nickname. I’m not sure if I’m okay with that.
“Aren’t you cold?” I challenge, referring to his naked
top half. Not that I’m complaining, but I know for a fact he owns a t-shirt and
it’s like minus a million in here.
A brilliant smile lights up his face. “Nope.”
As if on cue, the front door clicks open and Ashlee
shuffles in, hands full of plastic bags. “Sam! I’m back with the Chinese! Get
your butt down here!”
Kai turns to me, silver eyes wide. As soon as Ashlee
rounds the corner from the front door she’ll see him. “I told you,” I whisper
frantically as I drag him into the small hall closet.
“Sam?” Ashlee’s voice sounds so close, she must be just
outside the door. I exhale a heavy breath as her footsteps echo up the stairs
away from us. The light seeping under the door makes everything look dark grey.
I realize then that my hands are pressed up against Kai’s bare chest and he has
his arms wrapped tightly around me. We both let go at the same time and look
away.
“I understand why I’m hiding in the closet,” Kai
whispers, his breath tickling the hair on top of my head. “But why are you in
here with me?” I glance up to see his quirked eyebrow, and scowl at him, pressing
my lips together tightly.
“Shut up! I didn’t exactly have time to think this
through, okay?” His quiet chuckle echoes through the small space, I narrow my
eyes in annoyance and twist to stare at the gap under the door.
I can feel the heat radiating off Kai’s skin. I slowly
lift my head to look back up at him. He’s gazing down at me with his mouth
slightly open, his silver eyes glitter in the dim light. The atmosphere becomes
heavy and tense, crackling with electricity; I’m caught in his gaze, slowly leaning
closer to him. His hands come up and barely brush my arms. I inhale a shaky
breath and take a half step back, biting my lip. My back hits the wall of the
closet with a soft thump, breaking the spell. Kai’s eyes widen and he looks
away quickly.
“I should get out there, before she sends a search
party.”
He nods, still not looking at me and I move to open the
door.
“I’ll save you some dim sum?” The corner of my mouth
lifts in a small smile; I grasp the door knob and slip out of the closet. I
shut the door behind me with a snick and lean back against it, shaking my head.
What was that? Pushing off the door, I walk down the hall into the kitchen to
find Ashlee… —

Wattpad Featured Story: Like Wildfire
I am excited to announce that I just got a story featured on Wattpad! I hope you’ll take a moment to swing by and add it to your reading list and maybe let me know what you think.
This story is near and dear to my heart because it is a modern retelling of one of my all-time favorite Shakespeare plays, Much Ado About Nothing. Most of you probably don’t know that my day job is as a high school English teacher (shocker, I know!) and a few years ago I had my seniors study this play. A random comment by one of them is what started it all: “Ms. Reece, this play is just like high school with all the drama and gossip!” I totally agreed so we created a modern adaptation and filmed it. It was one of the most difficult projects I’ve ever done, but the result was a fully edited 56 minute film that we showed to the entire school. It was a lot of fun! But I will never do it again.
I couldn’t completely forget about Much Ado, however, and decided to write Like Wildfire for this year’s NaNoWriMo project. I had so much fun writing it! I set it in a fictional town in West Texas called Messina, which I plopped on the map near Sweetwater. I have lived in Abilene, El Paso, and Marfa, so I thought it would be amusing to set a story in the general vicinity. I usually set my stories here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, so it was refreshing to try something new.
I soon found out that writing a novel based on a play can be challenging! My biggest challenge was point of view: in a play you can see what everyone is doing, but in a novel you need to get inside the characters’ heads. But which characters? I chose to stick with the Beatrice, Benedick, and Don John characters (ooh, creating my villain was AMAZEBALLS!), but I did a few scenes from other POVs. I don’t know if those work and would LOVE some input!
The best part, to me, is that my oldest daughter (also a writer and English teacher) got interested in the project and is now working on revisions of Like Wildfire. We have great plans for it to be the first book in the Shakespeare High (or something like that) series. She’ll begin work on Love’s Labours Lost soon and I’ll pick up with revisions for her.
I’m also working with a group of high school graphic designers for a new cover, so stay tuned!
This is all so much fun! I do hope you’ll drop a comment and go check out Like Wildfire on Wattpad. Hey, it’s free!
