Senbazuru, a thousand paper cranes

One of the most impactful moments of my life sciences career has been standing in the front lobby of one of my clients, a major Japanese-owned pharmaceutical company, and taking in the display of Senbazuru, a thousand origami paper cranes. It was a beautiful art display of delicate origami, all those paper cranes strung up in flight as a symbol of the efforts to find cures for cancer.

This company was an oncology company and they had developed the 1000 Cranes of Hope program to increase research, education and access to treatment for cancer patients. Senbazuru had become a symbol of this program and the mission of this company, and I was proud to be a part of this effort.

Senbazuru: the legend

The act of folding a thousand paper cranes is an old Japanese tradition. Successfully folding a thousand is said to grant the person a singular, powerful wish, like wishing for happiness and good luck in marriage, or for success in one’s ambitious pursuits, or for recovery from serious illness or injury, or maybe for world peace.

Big wishes. Wishes that take a miracle.

Sadako Sasaki’s Senbazuru

Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl exposed to the radiation of Hiroshima as a child. She developed leukemia at a young age and while she spent time in the hospital, she began folding paper cranes. Her goal? Fold a thousand paper cranes and wish for her cancer to be cured.

Perhaps because of Sadako’s wish and efforts, Senbazuru has become a symbol of the efforts to find cures for different types of cancer. Maybe not directly resulting in, but definitely a part of the inspiration for the display in the front lobby of my pharma client’s building all those years ago and the launch of the 1000 Cranes of Hope program.

My Senbazuru

I’ve enjoyed the art of origami since childhood. I used to fold elegant paper cranes, clever foxes, cute frogs, and more. Practicing origami is calming for me and the results bring a smile to me even in the most anxious times.

Here and now, I’m facing a personal medical challenge for which the Senbazuru is very much in my mind and in my heart. So, I’ve begun folding paper cranes.

Coming September 24!

Fangs So Bright & Deadly

Mythwoven series: Book 2

A Kitsune, a Gumiho, a Witch, and a danger not even their combined magic can defy.

Marie Xiao lives a double life, moonlighting as a freelance consultant in corporate Seattle even as she dedicates herself―and her powers as a witch―to chasing down objects of myth and magic before they can be used to harm humankind. She carefully guards the bridges between worlds and has never once been tempted to stray.

Until she catches the eye of a pair-bonded kitsune and gumiho and her whole world is thrown into chaos.

Japanese and Korean fox spirits Yamamoto Kuro and Joseph Choe have been hoping to cross paths with Marie since their first chance meeting at an artifact retrieval gone decidedly wrong. They may work for Marie’s enemy, but they don’t see any reason why they can’t mingle a little work and play…especially when a (literal) dead man waltzes into their impromptu reunion, raising intriguing questions about a deeper magic that may be afoot. Temporarily teaming up, the trio investigate the unusual unrest…but as loyalties begin to shift and lines blur, Kuro, Joe, and Marie may find themselves at the precipice of something none of them are prepared to face…or deny.

Wings Once Cursed & Bound.avia-image-container.av-av_image-d2649ede53ec8555634cd015306b58a5 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

My wings unbound, I am the Thai bird princess, the kinnaree, and no matter the cost, I will be free.

Peeraphan Rahttana lives her life in Seattle, unaware of the complicated magical world spinning just beyond the shadows and mist…until a violent clash outside her dance rehearsal has her literally whisked off her feet. Her darkly brooding rescuer, vampire Bennett Andrews, claims to represent a secret organization dedicated to locating objects of myth and magic, tucking them safely away where they can do no harm—but he’s too late to save Peeraphan from a deadly curse.

Yet Peeraphan isn’t what she seems. Wings unbound, she’s a Thai bird princess of legend…and while the curse won’t kill her outright, it’s only a matter of time. Determined, Bennett sweeps Peeraphan deeper into a supernatural world far beyond anything she ever imagined in a desperate bid to find a solution…and an explanation for the powers even she doesn’t know how to define.

Her world may have changed overnight, but Peeraphan knows one thing for certain: she can’t go back to living as a human anymore. Not when she’s felt what it’s like to fly with Bennett by her side. She’s determined to keep her wings and her freedom…and defy anyone who would try to take them from her again.

What would you save if the world you knew disappeared and you could open your eyes to what exists just beyond?

We’ve no idea when this sale will end, so if you were planning to pick up the print format for yourself or a friend/loved one, now is a good time!

Executive Director Grace Kim figures this reunion with her college friends is the perfect excuse to prove that she knows how to keep work/life balance and enjoy the Caribbean, preferably with her pants intact.

Rich, sexy, brilliant Bryan Sirimongkol has an app for that, and he charms Grace into helping him test it. He offers seven days of the best vacation of her life (bonus, sizzling chemistry) before they return to reality, but he didn’t anticipate just how much of his heart he’d give her.

When an accidental error results in a humiliating video of her online, Grace must salvage her career and decide whether to erase Bryan from her memory forever or admit they brought out the best in each other.

A terrible choice in the face of duty: Report the existence of a human turned shape-shifter. Or forget he ever met her.

This print omnibus includes Books 1-3 of the Triton Experiment series – each story is complete.

HUNTING KAT
As a mercenary, Kat Darah doesn’t have to pass for a normal human. On the edge of the solar system, she’s just another biped. Most of the time.

TRACKING KAT
Kat Darah has been ordered to keep her shape-shifting secret from everyone but those closest to her, for her own safety. She’s learned how to control the feral rage–for the most part. But when Lieutenant Rygard’s military unit goes missing, she’ll use every skill she has to find her man.

FIGHTING KAT
Kat and Rygard will need to form a new team to go deep undercover, posing as gladiators and learning to fight together- not just side by side-in order to survive. In the arena, it’s all about who is the strongest predator?

5 Iconic Foods Imperative to Piper’s Happiness

I travel quite a lot, for both my day job and my writing careers. No matter what the primary reason is for my travel, I seek out good food and tasty experiences bring me joy. I spent a significant portion of my childhood and early adult years in the Philadelphia / New Jersey / NYC area, so I have a whole list of foods I must get, if at all possible. Really, there are 5 iconic foods imperative to Piper’s Happiness when visiting the Tri-State area (meaning, to me, PA/NJ/NY).

Iconic foods #1: Philly Cheesesteak

Perhaps the easiest iconic food for me to get is the Philly cheesesteak. Why? Both Geno’s and Tony Luke’s are obtainable right in the Philadelphia International Airport (as of the time of this post).

My favorite childhood location used to be Jim’s on South Street, but I heard Jimmy’s recently suffered a fire and I’ve no idea how the cheesesteaks taste post-fire recovery or even whether the location has managed to open again yet.

I’m not going into a deep dive into the differences between the various places that serve a good Philly cheesesteak in the city of brotherly love. Instead, I’ll tell you the way I like mine:

Cheesesteak with provolone, mushrooms, and fried onions.

Occasionally, usually when the Eagles are being celebrated, I like my cheesesteaks wit Whiz. (generally dyed green)

I love a cheesesteak that starts on good, fresh bread – the kind you really can only get in the Philly / NJ / NYC area. I prefer my steak chopped into tiny pieces on the grill, as opposed to the slices remaining intact. I like my cheese melted right into my chopped steak. Give me a LOT of cheese. No dry cheesesteak bite, please.

A truly good Philly cheesesteak means I don’t ever feel the desire for ketchup or hot peppers or anything but my hot, messy, melty goodness.

If you’ve read my True Heroes series, you might have noticed a few references to my love for good Philly cheesesteak in Extreme Honor, Ultimate Courage, or Absolute Trust.

.avia-image-container.av-lu5tek87-d916e3359e293aa4e368eb7575e4a0b0 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}Philadelphia cheese steakIconic foods #2: Pastrami Reuben.avia-image-container.av-lu5u0m1h-81bbf9c3cc86f0a45e2620e68028fdfe .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}classic Reuben Sandwich

Some of the best classic reubens I’ve ever had have been served to me in either a Jersey or NY diner. Give me perfectly grilled marbled rye cut just thin enough to maintain the structural integrity of massive layers of pastrami topped with tangy sauerkraut, melty Swiss cheese, and generous dollops of Thousand Island dressing.

I prefer my reuben as a sandwich I can pick up with my hands and attempt to get my mouth around for a big bite. Open-faced sandwich melts have their place, but I don’t generally go for my reubens in this format.

Give me a crunchy, refreshing dill pickly spear on the side.

Some of the best pastrami or corned beef comes out of NYC (and upstate NY or out of certain parts of PA) and do I need to mention the bread quality again?

Iconic foods #3: New York Egg Cream

It’s a lightly fizzy chocolate milk, honestly.

The key to understanding the NY Egg Cream, in my mind, is very similar to understanding the difference between a Black & White and a chocolate milkshake. You could make an egg cream drink with chocolate milk the way you could make a shake with chocolate ice cream, but there’s a distinct difference when starting with milk and adding chocolate syrup.

There’s something incredibly nostalgic about taking my first sip through a straw of a New York Egg Cream and my mouth filling with chocolate syrup first, followed by refreshing cool milk and seltzer.

Iconic foods #4: Italian Sub

Call it a sub (submarine) or a hoagie and I’m not going to be the person to argue with you. What I will tell you is that I can’t get an Italian sub anywhere as good as I’ve enjoyed in South Jersey. Part of that could be because my teen years were spent within a few minute bike ride of Aversa’s Italian Bakery for the freshest breads and excellent deli meats. I have literally made the exact same order at Jersey Mike’s in Seattle and in New Jersey and the same exact sandwich was better in New Jersey.

Most recently, though, I popped by White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City, and oh wow did this place fulfill my craving for a good Italian sub. It was everything I remember an Italian sub being: layers of good quality thin-sliced capicola, salami, pepperoni, and ham, piled so high the girth of the sub is almost the size of my face drenched in good vinegar, crisp shredded lettuce, fresh tomatoes, sliced onions, and hot peppers chopped up and spread thick enough to be almost like a tapenade. I know my romance readers didn’t miss the note on girth, but my dears, the regular sub from White House has a length that is proportionately impressive at just about three feet long.

I kid you not.

.avia-image-container.av-lu5u63qb-5bf52e757251dc81ba4dedc120d59306 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}Iconic foods #5: Scrapple

This last one is really for the foodies who don’t flinch at consuming all the various bits of a beast, because truly there’s no reason to ask what’s in scrapple. It’s a nondescript loaf of mostly pork scraps chopped so fine, it’s a pressed mush. Cooked properly, it’s glorious. Scrapple is another diner food and I have opinions on how it is served best. Your mileage may vary, based on your own personal preferences.

I like my scrapple sliced thin and lightly coated in flour, then fried so each slice is delicately crisp on the outside and just a touch soft in the middle. This is the way Piper Mommy used to make it at home and the way it was served at my favorite local diners growing up. I’d enjoy scrapple with eggs over easy and crisp hash browns.

I honestly haven’t tried scrapple anywhere else, because I haven’t really encountered it anywhere else. But if you decide to give it a try, beware the scrapple sliced thick like meat loaf. That’s a completely different experience and I cannot vouch for the taste.

What does this have to do with your writing, Piper?

Maybe nothing, maybe everything. I teach an entire class on using Food in Characterization on occasion, exploring how a character’s reactions to food can be a part of character arc. Perhaps I’ll teach this class again in the near future. Check in at Writing the Other or Clarion West, as I teach most often for these two non-profit organizations.

I finally get to share to gorgeous cover art for FANGS SO BRIGHT & DEADLY, book 2 of my Mythwoven series. This cover reveal is just in time for 25% off pre-orders at Barnes & Noble, so I thought it’d be fun to share my top 5 books to pre-order along with FANGS SO BRIGHT & DEADLY.

Two stylized fox spirits face each other with fangs bared.Now, my 5 books to pre-order along with Fangs So Bright & Deadly

The Poison’s We Drink has been on my wishlist for a while now. The idea of a witcher brewing love potions as a side hustle to support her family? Of more poisonous potions used against those who abuse power? Blurred ethical lines everywhere?  Yes, please.

.avia-image-container.av-lv3chjw7-f47f43391bde36ced5d298411049158d .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

I’ve been a longtime reader and fan of Patricia Briggs, from way back when I first picked up The Hob’s Bargain from an indie bookstore. I fell in love with When Demons Walk and Steal the Dragon. My heart clenched when I thought about how Hurog means Dragon.

Her Mercy Thompson series has been another must-read for me, so the only surprise here is that I haven’t pre-ordered Winter Lost yet. I’m definitely going to this week.

.avia-image-container.av-lv3cq30y-ec5e11a2ff3ed5a2a0190c9b9850cdce .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series and the follow up series have been another one-click for me every time a new book is up for pre-order.

I’ve loved the shifters of Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling universe since I first started reading romance, starting with my gateway introduction to the series: Stroke of Enticement. Zach and Annie’s story is an annual re-read for me at Christmas time.

I’m looking forward to reading Primal Mirror, the 8th book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity series.

.avia-image-container.av-lv3cx3g5-cccd8137675bf604a4954b087b825aa2 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

Abigail Owen is a new-to-me author, but the title of this book alone snagged my attention and wouldn’t let me go. This modern mythic romantasy has elements similar to the world I’ve built for my Mythwoven series in that the setting is present-day while myth and magic are real.

The Games Gods Play has an urban fantasy edge to it and I’m here for the god of Hell picking a BAMF heroine as his champion.

.avia-image-container.av-lv3d6ilo-833accd14797278cc03457aad2bf1956 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

I collect very few manga these days, but this series is special to me, both for the story and because I’m simultaneously collecting in English and Thai language. Reading manga was the way I learned to read Thai as a teen and it’s still something I enjoy now.

A Stepmother’s Märchen Vol. 4 is up for pre-order and I’m really looking forward to owning it in print. I’ll need to wait a few months before I can get hold of its Thai language counterpart the next time I’m in Thailand.

.avia-image-container.av-lv3dch8d-245df66d722d965fe4e853bec8282bb5 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

I’d love to know if any of these titles are of interest, or if you’ve got other titles planned for pre-order this week. Let me know in the comments!

An Idol with Luv

Intergalactic Idol #1

Trouble can be fun, and fun can be a great way to recover from burnout.

Nirin is a lot of things-a human, who shapeshifts into a werewolf, who works as a mercenary-so she strives for a simple life. Complete the mission. Get paid. Survive. Avoid complications.

But when an old friend calls in a favor and hires her to protect a brilliant intergalactic idol, she finds herself sharing guard duty with the rakish station engineer she swore she’d never get tangled up with again. She’s tempted beyond reason by each of them, and they’re quickly overriding any reasons not to choose the both of them.

Add in the discovery of a dead body in a place where all three of them are potential suspects, and this job is beyond complicated.

Wings Once Cursed & Bound.avia-image-container.av-luljjgma-cbfe783aaf5c4da1d66083af13d710fd .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

K-Drama Inspirations to Maximize Your Story Webinar

Asian dramas have become incredibly popular, K-dramas in particular. They hook viewers and create a voracious fan base. Why? The plots, characters, and settings have a fresh feel – just enough commonality to give readers an anchor while they’re introduced to elements that are new and different from what they’ve previously experienced so they still get the same feeling of escape from their own everyday life.

Students will learn to recognize the most addictive elements in Asian drama stories, leading to complex and satisfying plot lines, fresh yet familiar worldbuilding, characters you can’t help but root for, and compelling hooks to draw readers from chapter to chapter straight through to the end of one book and into the next. We’ll discuss what makes these stories so binge-worthy and how to take inspiration from them to maximize your writing craft.

This class provides illustrative examples and practical craft takeaways for storytellers to apply to their own stories. An interactive brainstorming session will give students the opportunity to discuss immediate ways to apply what they’ve learned to current (or future) works in progress.

3 facets of my day-to-day I evaluate to live my best life

Change is a thing. The way my brain works, I actually react to change in a fairly positive way. Add to that my lived experience in my personal life and in my day job career, and even in my writing career, I’ve become rather accustomed to change. And in the transition phase between the way things were before and the way things are evolving moving forward, I have 3 facets of my day-to-day I evaluate to live my best life.

How, not when, I start my day

Before anyone asks me whether I’m a morning person or a night owl, let’s establish one thing: I’m a wanderer.

Whether I’m traveling, and therefore in a drastically different time zone then what I consider my home city or I’m working on a global project team and meeting with cross functional groups in various time zones, I don’t have a daily routine with a regular wake up time and bedtime. The combination of my personal life, day job commitments, and writing career collaborations may require me to have meetings across a broad range of time zones on any given day. Heck, sometimes I’m in Thailand or another country and working remotely on East Coast or Pacific time, resting on a biphasic sleep schedule.

So it’s not about what time I wake up and start my day, so much as how I get ready to live the day I have ahead of me no matter what time it starts. This is what I need to evaluate to live my best life …for the near future. Things could change again.

In the past, as soon as my alarm went off I would get up and head into the bathroom to see to personal needs and take a shower, get dressed, and even do my hair. Sometimes makeup would happen, depending on my mood and how I wanted to present myself to the day.

In recent years, my alarm would go off and I would roll out of bed to pull on and oversized sweatshirt or sweater, tie my hair back, find my glasses, and power up my computer to immediately jump into a video conference.

These days I don’t have the energy and don’t see value in going through all the effort of showering, dressing, and doing hair (and possibly makeup) — but rolling out of bed and directly into working puts me into a grumpy mindset for the whole day.

I want to start my day differently. In this transition time when my day job career is changing significantly, I think I’d like to try setting my alarm to wake me up about an hour before I need to interact with anybody so I can see to my personal needs and then maybe get back in bed with a cup of tea and have a pleasant 30 mins for my own personal thoughts before I start working for the day.

How I manage my day

In the past, I have been amazing at task management and productivity. In my day job career, I’m still an excellent global program manager and project manager. Then I hit burnout a few years ago. No I’ve had multiple medical challenges throughout my life, a new complication hit a few years ago that required absolute bed rest. The intentionally slow, gradual recovery through the following years has been good.

But I’ve been progressively taking on more and more activities, making more commitments, and increasing my workload. I need to find ways to manage what I need to get done in a given day, to reduce the stress of worrying about dropping a ball or forgetting something.

I used to love paper planners, but my spine issues and the related nerve complications in my hands mean that I can’t maintain a daily planner consistently. On any given day, I’m not even sure I can hold a pen. For the same reason, I can’t leave myself a cloud of sticky notes to manage my to do tasks either.

I really enjoy trying new software apps and there are a lot of task management and productivity apps out there. So in this facet of daily living, it seems what I need to evaluate to live my best life is productivity software.

Habitica is one of my favorite apps to gamify daily to dos and habits. I actually like using it for personal things like remembering to hydrate and remembering to take my meds. But it is not complex enough to track multiple projects across my day job and writing careers. So Habitica can be a part of my day to day tools, but it isn’t the full solution.

I’ve tried Notion, because a lot of my colleagues who love paper planners also love the customizable aspect of notion. But there’s something about the application user interface that just isn’t for me. I love Trello, mostly because it’s very easy to create cards and manage tasks in a Kanban style workflow. It really works well when I’m evaluating my long term goals and defining them for myself. But like Habitica, it doesn’t work for me when it comes to tracking multiple projects across my day job and writing careers and having a dashboard I can view at the beginning of my day to assess a sort of daily to do list of tasks across the varying work streams in my life

I’ve tried ClickUp and it has the functionality I need, but it’s almost too fussy to set up and I found myself not particularly interested in checking in each day. I’m going to try a Asana this month, and hopefully it will support me the way I need to successfully navigate the upcoming transition in my day job.

How I maintain my boundaries

In the past I really didn’t maintain boundaries at all. From a day job perspective, I was very driven by the corporate attitude of going above and beyond, exceeding expectations continually, and proving I was an asset to my company by overachieving. I have no regrets. I was really good at what I did and I accomplished awesome things. And I’m done with that.

In my personal life, I was a people pleaser. I was trying so hard to be a good friend, a good person. Even when others didn’t have or didn’t choose to invest the same energy into the relationship that I was. The only thing I can control was what I did, so I continually took all the accountability and I was convinced if I just tried harder and did more for the relationship then I’d have the peace of mind of knowing I was a good friend. I don’t have that energy anymore and moving forward, in order to have the energy I need to be healthy, I need to be more cognizant and intentional about nurturing the relationships in which people invest their energy in our mutual relationship along with me.

And so in this transition time I’ve been thinking about the guidelines and parameters I will use to prioritize and decide when I need to say no. That could be saying no to myself and my urges to try harder every bit as much as saying no to the invitations or demands coming to me from the people around me.

Piper, that’s all awesome but when will your next book be ready?

All this introspection may seem to have nothing to do with my storytelling. On the contrary, if I don’t take time to evaluate to live my best life, I won’t have the wherewithal to write.

These three facets influence how I go about my day and have the time, the energy, and the creativity to write.  It’s one of the key things that makes me happy. And to me, a sign of living my best life, is thinking back on my day just before I fall asleep and feeling happy.

While I’m doing all of this behind the scenes work on myself to evaluate to live my best life, readers can enjoy my recently released queer science fiction romance, An Idol with Luv. And fantasy romance  fans of my Mythwoven series, can look forward to the release of Fangs So Bright & Deadly this coming September.

Wings Once Cursed & Bound.avia-image-container.av-lot4ynb4-cb0305a28c45f9c5b2194fca9c16c665 .av-image-caption-overlay-center{color:#ffffff;}

My wings unbound, I am the Thai bird princess

The kinnaree

And no matter the cost,

I will be free.

Peeraphan Rahttana lives her life in Seattle, unaware of the complicated magical world spinning just beyond the shadows and mist…until a violent clash outside her dance rehearsal has her literally whisked off her feet. Her darkly brooding rescuer, vampire Bennet Andrews, claims to represent a secret organization dedicated to locating objects of myth and magic, tucking them safely away where they can do no harm―but he’s too late to save Peeraphan from a deadly curse.

Not when she’s felt what it’s like to fly with Bennet by her side. She’s determined to keep her wings and her freedom…and defy anyone who would try to take them from her again.

What would you save if the world you knew disappeared

And you could open your eyes to what exists just beyond?
