Hell Bent – Excerpt #2
HELL BENT, book #1 of my new Broken Magic series will be out in less than two weeks! Two weeks! Time for another excerpt, don’t you think?
In this scene, our boy Shame is at a bar when a lovely (and possibly dangerous) red-headed woman sits down at his table.
Hell Bent
“I’m looking for a man. A magic user. I want you to help me find him. And kill him.”
Matter-of-fact. Clear. To the point. But her tone had gone too careful. Too even. Hiding her heartbeat, the race of adrenaline. She didn’t just wa...

Hell Bent – Excerpt
I promised an excerpt from HELL BENT today. Sorry to be late with the post. I’ll be posting more excerpts as we get closer to release too. This is a short scene with Shame and Terric. Since it’s not clear from the text, we start this with Terric asking Shame a question:
***
“Why is every conversation with you an argument?”
“Seems a waste of time, doesn’t it? Especially since I’m always right.”
He leaned one shoulder against the elevator wall, half turned toward me. “Like the time you said Victor...

Cover – STONE COLD
Wednesday, I’ll be posting an excerpt from HELL BENT, book #1 in the Broken magic series, which comes out November 5th.
But today I thought it’d be fun to share STONE COLD, book #2 in the series. Ready??
So. What do you think? I love the action in this cover too, and think the cells in the background with magic down the bars is really cool!
The artist is the amazing Michael Heath. I think he’s done a great job of giving the books a look that makes them really feel like they belong together.
Here...

Terrible Angels
I recently had the chance to see an early showing ofTERRIBLE ANGELS a dark indie film my amazing cameraman brother, Darin Woods, was involved in making.
TERRIBLE ANGELS was made here in Oregon, featuring talented actors and actresses, including Michael Madsen. I don’t usually seek out horror movies, but hey–my brother was a part of this creative work, had talked to me about the process and some of the challenges of making the film, and I wanted to see the end product.
I’m very glad I did! This...

Listen up, Book
Every third Monday, I blog at the Deadline Dames. Since I’ve fallen a bit behind in blogging here, I thought I’d share the post to get me back in my M-W-F blogging swing.
* note: I have a bit of a head cold and am foggy-brained. This entry is all in fun.
Dear Book I am Currently Writing,
You suck.
I am smack dab in the middle of hassling out a first draft of you, and have pretty much hit that point where I wonder if this mess of words will actually pull together into something readable.
Yes, it’...

Catching up

If you contacted me recently via the little envelope button on my blog, I’ve um…accidentally erased all those messages via installing/uninstalling a plug-in on my web page. If you are waiting on an answer from me, please re-email me using that little envelope button on my blog and I promise I won’t accidentally erase it again.
If you were a winner of one of the HELL BENT ARCs, I *did* get your email. Hopefully I answered you. All ARCs have been mailed. So if you...

Doing it on Deadline
I finished re-watching season 8 of SUPERNATURAL on dvd. I’m currently listening to commentary and extra behind-the-scenes stuff from directors and writers who work on the show. I love listening to that kind of “insider” experience. I’m comforted by knowing other creative types sometimes struggle to get the job done with the time and resources at hand.
Remember, these people have been doing this stuff for years. They are experienced professionals talking about their jobs as directors and some o...

Her Steady Pace
My grandmother was one of those incredibly patient people. She’d grown up on a farm in a day and age when you didn’t always have what you wanted or needed at the tap of your fingers, whether it be food, family, or fun.
She loved growing flowers and won ribbons at the State Fair for her dahlias and flower arrangements. She cooked, canned, crocheted, and worked full time while she raised a family. When I was young, I remember seeing her in the yard with her favorite spade–a narrow shovel that sh...

Spin Me Right Round
I’ve just sent off revisions on STONE COLD, book #2 in the Broken Magic series. This is the spin-off from the Allie Beckstrom urban fantasy books, featuring Shame and Terric as lead characters. The first book, HELL BENT will be out November 5th, and I am both nervous and excited for readers to get their hands on this, my first spin-off series.
Honestly, I never thought I’d write a spin-off...
