Circumnavigating New Zealand — Leaving Pukerangi Railway Station

Pukerangi

We alighted from the train at the quaint stop of Pukerangi. Here the locals set up tables from which to sell their various crafts and wares as we waited for the train crew to reposition the locomotive for the return trip to Dunedin. After perhaps 45 minutes or so of using the outhouse and looking around, our Dunedin Railways train was ready for reboarding. So, I snapped a few shots more, and Ursula and I then climbed back onto the train.

Circumnavigating New Zealand — Traversing Taieri Gorge

Maniototo at Puderangi

Time to head back from the Maniototo plateau and plain, through the Taieri Gorge, for return to Dunedin. And on this return trip you’ll see much more of Taieri Gorge than on Monday’s article.

Taieri Gorge

The Taieri Gorge was formed by the Taieri River, a little of which you can see here:

Our ride was of course aboard the Taieri Gorge Limited, which is a line run by Dunedin Railways:

Circumnavigating New Zealand — Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi

Pukerangi Station panorama

In 2020 we returned to Dunedin, New Zealand aboard the Radiance of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean ship upon which we circumnavigated Australia. But since we’d already toured Dunedin’s city centre the previous year, this time we headed over the the railway station for a trip through Taieri Gorge aboard Dunedin Railways, formerly known as Taieri Gorge Railway. Today’s trip was on the Taieri Gorge Limited.

Circumnavigating New Zealand — Dunedin Railway Station Architecture

Dunedin Railway Station — south side

Lower Stuart Street in Dunedin ends at ANZAC Square. And across from ANZAC Square you’ll find an exquisite example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. This is the George Trope designed Dunedin Railway Station. George Trope became so associated with this work that he earned the nickname “Gingerbread George”, and for obvious reasons.

This is one impressive work of architecture, and the façade provides many details for the photographer, begi...
